Beron could see the sense in what Gareth Ashaman had said, “I suppose it’s the same way quartermasters used to look at our supplies. Better to have mounts to spare, then lose a watchtower for want of a messenger.”

“I have the rest of the bell still free, and then I will have to depart for class. The Aes Sedai who is teaching us etiquette and court decorum is not understanding of tardiness,” Beron muttered before stopping himself, suddenly wondering if the Ashaman next to him knew the Aes Sedai.

“You mentioned delay cannot be tolerated, is there a marching order when someone arrives? I wouldn’t want to waste time if those around me are used to leaping to certain stones first." Beron asked as he tried to recall what little he could remember of the field tents.

“And I am definitely willing to follow along, thank you for the offer. If I can ask, where you at the Grey Tower long before finding your calling here..” Beron asked before stopping abruptly as he heard commotion and a flurry of hushed voices coming from the front. Hands working as best he could, he finished his bandage and looked to Gareth Ashaman to see his reaction

Anyone and everyone who worked in the infirmary had to be acutely aware of things taking place within it. One had to learn to be very familiar with what was the "usual" chaos and what was "new" chaos. Really, it was a lot like being a parent. One had to know, just by instinct, what was "okay" noise or silence and what wasn't...

This commotion was new, and it's caught Gareth's attention immediately. He turned his head like a hound that had caught a scent, staring in the direction of the front of the infirmary. His hand put away the bandage he had just rolled without even looking at it. He listened for just a moment, determining if this was something that warranted his attention.

That was settled a split-second later.

"Gareth Asha'man!" someone called.

The big man turned and immediately set off. He said quickly over his shoulder, "You're free to follow, young man." He did not break stride as he spoke, and those big steps carried him from the back to the front with remarkable speed, and yet he managed to not knock anything, or anyone, over with his passage.

That's not to say a couple didn't near-dive out of the way...but that was their choice.

Reaching the front, the large Yellow was thoroughly unsurprised to see an injured trainee being supported by two other trainees. It was two Ji'val and on Drin, from the looks of what parts of their uniforms they were presently wearing. It was one of the Ji who had been injured, and since the Drin didn't look terrified, Gareth guessed that the other Ji was the cause.

"What happened?" Gareth rumbled, directing them to a bed.

"We were sparring and I swept out his feet, he landed back on his back," the healthy Ji'val explained.

Gareth grunted. "You should have sent for a Yellow rather than moved him," he said, with only a hint of admonishment. He had to focus on other things now. "Be careful and lay him down."

Beron Gareth Ashaman stood, his face keen with concentration as he took a moment to assess the commotion. A voice called out for the large Yellow, and pausing only to invite Beron along, he moved at a rush towards the front.

Following him, Beron was amazed at how well the Ashaman moved, his large stride eating up the paces; and causing many Accepted to tumble backwards. A few narrowly missed his headlong rush, but he supposed many of them would be used to working with each other.

Beron reached the front of the Infirmary a few moments after Gareth, and being careful to move out of the way; he soon spotted the two Ji’val and one Drin moving towards them. The Ji’val in the middle was clearly injured and in pain, although Beron couldn’t tell at first glance what was wrong.

"What happened?" Gareth rumbled, directing them to a bed.

"We were sparring and I swept out his feet, he landed back on his back," the healthy Ji'val explained.

Gareth grunted. "You should have sent for a Yellow rather than moved him," he said, his voice sounding like quarry gravel. "Be careful and lay him down."

Beron watched as the men laid the Ji’val down and wondered what Gareth Ashaman could be worried about. Pain and injury were unfortunate facts of life for a Ji’val, but Beron knew there would be more to the questions and so he made a mental note to ask the other man later.

Once the two trainees had laid the third down on the bed, Gareth stood close to the bedside. "I'm going to Delve you now," he announced, and gave a moment for there to be some statement or objection as needed. If the patient was conscious, they had the option. But the Yellow had yet to ever be refused.

Gareth then began to Delve, laying the fine mesh over the body and moving it quickly on through. He looked at everything, but focused for a time on one specific thing.

When he was done, his eyes regained focus and he looked at the Ji'val. "Fortunately, I see no damage to your spine. You have a sprain and will see a bad bruise, but otherwise, you'll be fine. You just need a day or two of rest, and something to ease the pain today. I'll give you that and keep you here until the morning for observation."

He turned to Beron and made a request for the young man to fetch a specific herb to ease the Ji'val's pained back, giving the instructions on the preparation of it.

Beron watched as the man was laid out on the bedside, and he was curious to hear Gareth Ashaman mention he was going to Delve the Ji’val. The injury hadn’t really seemed that serious, and Beron watched the large man’s face to see if he could read any sign of how the young trainee was doing.

Beron was surprised to hear the surety in Gareth Ashaman’s voice when he announced what he had found. Truly the One Power is a wonder, to know inside the body that the Ji’val will be okay, thought Beron to himself as Gareth Ashaman continued to speak.

He turned to Beron and made a request for the young man to fetch a specific herb to ease the Ji'val's pained back, giving the instructions on the preparation of it. “Yes Ashaman, I will grab it now,” Beron responded as he headed to the dry stores to see if he could find the Valerian root.

As he searched through the well stocked shelves, the jars of herb clanking as he moved them out of the way; Beron kept running over the brewing and amounts that Gareth had mentioned. As the bundle of root was sliced and boiled to release the healing compound, Beron wondered how a person might look for injury without the One Power.

Soon enough he had prepared the brew, the bitter aroma steaming out of the cup as he brought it back to the Ji’val. After a quick nod from Gareth, Beron helped the man drink the cooling liquid, noticing that in his absence the ratted uniform jacket had been removed so he could rest in greater comfort.

"Thank you, Beron," Gareth said with a half-smile and a nod as the trainee backed away from the bed.

Once he had, Gareth dismissed the two who had helped carry the young man in. "In the future, if someone seems to land badly on their neck or back, please fetch a Yellow before you choose to move him," the big Yellow cautioned, but without censure. They didn't know better, and had done their best by their friend.

He waited until they were gone and then turned to the Ji'val. "Rest now. The root will help. Someone will bring you something to eat shortly and if we see no signs of further trouble, you can leave in the morning."

"Yes, Asha'man," was the only reply he got. He didn't need any more.

With that, Gareth turned away and gestured for Beron to follow. "When someone lands on their back or neck, it can damage the spine, which can lead to any number of other serious complications. They may lose feeling or the ability to move parts of their body if not treated properly and promptly," he explained as they returned to the back of the infirmary.

Beron stopped for a moment to try and recall the lessons he had attended so far that touched upon the body. Many of the details were fuzzy in his recollection, and he realized he would have to revisit notes often if Healing interested him.

“You had said before that moving him was a bad idea, that would have been to prevent further injury as you said. I was wondering though, are there signs of such damage that can be seen with the eye?” Beron asked as he considered the question he was trying to frame.

“With your weaves you were able to “see” inside of him, and I know many cuts or injuries will be visible due to blood or bruising. I was just wondering what someone who cannot channel could look for?”

As they continued to make there way to the back, Beron was amazed each time Gareth Ashaman stopped to correct a Novice healer, or inquire about improvements in each patient. It was an impressive display of memory and knowledge, so Beron inquired, “ How long have you been doing this work for the Grey Tower? I can see your knowledge and I have to admit it’s impressive.”

The last of the young man's questions made Gareth chuckle. "Far, far longer than I am quite willing to admit," he rumbled. "But I have a full-grown daughter and son, and my daughter is an Aes Sedai herself. If that gives you any idea." And that was, indeed, as much as he was willing to admit. Perhaps simply because he couldn't hide the fact.

"The One Power certainly makes it much easier to asses the locations and severity of injuries," he agreed, moving back to the previous topic and not letting either of them linger on his age. "But healers have been doing without it in many places and over many generations. It just takes more knowledge and often, more time.

"One way to assess damage to the spine, the back and the neck, without the One Power is the symptoms of the injured party. If they are conscious, they can tell you if they are numb anywhere, having trouble moving body parts, or feel tingling sensations."

Beron was glad when Gareth rumbled a chuckle at his question. When he mentioned having a daughter who was Aes Sedai; Beron could not help but feel his eyebrows raise. He knew many channellers enjoyed long lives, but the truth was still startling.

He was a man of few words it seemed, and Beron considered what he had said carefully.

Check for injury, blood and if they are conscious ask them about symptoms, numbness or similar pain he thought to himself as he tried to absorb everything around him. Considering the few wounds he had seen while serving as a Scout, Beron spoke over the din of the Infirmary.

“Is there a way to practice or study symptoms and such without needing a suffering person. I knew a few men who knew how to stitch a wound or tie a bandage; but I would hate to have to loom over beds here like a vulture,” Beron asked, his curiosity warring with his concern.

Gareth sighed as he smiled ruefully. "Unfortunately," he rumbled, "the healing craft is one that is difficult to practice without having the suffering laid bare before you. This is particularly true for those learning to heal without the use of the One Power. Most healers spend time in an apprenticeship, learning what they can by the teaching of their master but also being present to learn firsthand when there are patients to be seen.

"You can study and learn a great deal from reading books, or talking to those who know, but the true test of that knowledge always comes down to the patient." He gestured around the infirmary. "Spending time here is a good place to start, however. If the Yellows know that you are here to learn, and they know now because you have spoken to me, then you may get the opportunity for a little...informal apprenticing."
