Rejection: Level 304 [Avyra!]

Muireen do Morny a'Lordeine
Muireen could scarcely believe that Hama Valon had once been a city.

The devastation that the Seanchan had visited was of an unbelievable, ungodly magnitude; clearing away the wreckage and rubble and carnage would take months alone. Rebuilding seemed like an insurmountable and overwhelming task. Surely, by the time the Mountain Guard was a city again, she would be cold in her grave. Muireen had not seen much of the city when she had arrived as a noblewoman who sought superficial vengeance, and she regretted that she had not lingered before arriving at the Tower. None of its grandeur remained. Nothing remained but husks of burnt buildings and weeping people.

Many of the citizens took refuge on Tower grounds while the efforts to rebuild began. The Warder trainees were placed on rotating shifts; some days, some of them cleaned while the others trained, and some days, everyone cleaned, and some days, no one cleaned. The Amyrlin, M'Hael, and Mistress of Arms had plans to rebuild the city and their workers were sent accordingly. Sometimes all she did was stack rubble in a corner, and on other days, she and several men and women in grey would hoist away gigantic pieces of rubble on pulleys. The occasional novices and soldiers passed through with guidance from Aes Sedai and Asha'man, and Accepted and Dedicated channeled away a great deal of the mess with invisible weaves of the One Power - but it was still so much.

Long days didn't seem to make any sort of a difference.

Muireen trudged back to the Tower with a heavy heart and a heavier sigh. All those people, she thought. And for what? Truth be told, the drin'far'ji had no idea what the Tower had accomplished. She had no rank, which had suited her just fine before the siege and before the Oaths had been lifted, but now she wished that she knew what happened behind the sealed doors of the Hall of Sitters. Would there be a strike on Seandar? Would they do anything about the devastation that had been visited upon them? Or would they sit idle like a duck with its wings clipped?

The Amyrlin and the M'Hael were supposed to have as much power and respect as any King or Queen of any nation. That meant they had treaties, somewhere. Allies, somewhere. Wasn't the rest of the world terrified of Seanchan expansion? Even if they are, Muireen thought sourly, No one would bother telling me. She would not know a single thing about the future of her home until she had earned the privilege of owning her very own fan-cloak. Oh, certainly, she could try to eavesdrop on Ravak Darrow's business meetings, but his office was as silent as the grave. Either he never spoke, or his sister had installed a ter'angreal to keep pesky secretaries out of earshot, thin walls aside. Both options were equally plausible.

Muireen looked up at the Tower, her Tower, somehow still standing despite all that had happened. "Light help us," she muttered. "Even those of us that do not deserve it." The stone walls shone softly in the pink, cloudless sunset, ethereal and eerie: the world had burned around it, and it stood untouched, thanks to an M'Hael and Amyrlin and Ajah Head that had unsworn their Oaths. Perhaps they Hall had been right to remove the Oaths, and no one dared suggest that anyone without a pin was a darkfriend, now. What darkfriend would attempt to save the Tower?

The entire world had been set on its head in a span of time that felt shorter than a heartbeat - it was dizzying, and Muireen could not decide what to make of anything, anymore. Bitterness sat in the pit of her stomach like a festering wound; all of this, and she could glean no greater meaning from it. The Wheel was weaving the same story that it always wove, using the same threads that it always did, but never before had she felt so.... Unattached to her own thread and purpose. What was next? Rebuild, they said. What happened when the Seanchan returned? It'd likely be the same bloody answer.

Muireen kicked the gravel savagely as she trod back to her dorm, and she pointedly refused to look at the empty space where a stable had once been. What's the point, anymore? I might as well go back to Mindea.

Avyra felt like she was on top of the world, even though she didn't look it. She was covered in blood, her Novice dress all but torn to rags. But that was okay. She had kissed Terric.

It was odd. He hadn't denied her the kiss. Instead, he had pulled her up so she could reach. It was so strange to her. Someone who thought physical contact was improper would do that. It didn't make too much sense, but she still had a lot to learn about his people. She needed to ask him more.

She was on her lonely way back, lost in almost total bliss of the moment. She could still smell him on her, which was oddly satisfying. She enjoyed his scent, dirty as it was. And those eyes... she could have lived forever in that embrace.

But she had to focus on the present. But for now, she could live in bliss for a moment. It wouldn't hur-

smack

She hit someone, or something, square in the back with a yelp.

"Sorry! I wasn't-" She saw who it was. "Muireen!"

Muireen do Morny a'Lordeine
Someone touched her.

It not a whispering brush of an elbow in a crowded hallway, but a careening smack that had force behind it; Muireen followed through with the momentum, dropping into a crouch and pulling a throwing knife out of her boot as she did, then pivoted on her ankle to face her would-be attacker. Her heart was in her throat, her eyes were wide with fear that she was no longer ashamed of. The mercenary camp at Lake Somal had taught her the true meaning of fear: it was fear that had kept them all alive. Almost all of us, she thought scornfully, remembering the Dedicated that they had been unable to save. But fear kept him free.

The slim woman held her knife deftly, but blinked dumbly into the setting sun: where was her attacker? "Sorry!" said a white-clad woman, in a grossly inappropriate tone, far too chipper for a young woman in a Tower that had become a war-zone, "I didn't-..." The Drin took a slow moment to collect herself, and was careful not to move suddenly. Though the girl's face was obscured, with the sunset blazing behind her, Muireen could see that her garment was covered in blood. This child is not well; she needs a Yellow. Muireen carefully slipped her boot back into her dagger before she stood slowly, and did her best to look neutral and nonthreatening to the young woman that was clearly suffering a mental breakdown-

"Muireen!"

It clicked then - though she still could not quite see that it was Avrya, she knew that it was her friend. And that her friend was covered in more blood, and acting like a kitten chasing a butterfly. She hadn't bothered to listen to anyone a single time in her entire life and now she'd gone and addled her brains. Muireen would not admit to her own hypocrisy in the midst of rage; she should not have run off to Lake Somal with a smattering of barely trained teenagers on a suicide mission, but at least she was able to handle herself. At least she could respect the sacrifices that others made. And worse - Muireen still cared. She still worried, even if Avrya had a death-wish. Lashing out would get her nowhere, the drin knew, but it was not enough to stop her.

"Avrya," Muireen's jaw clenched so tightly that it hurt. "I don't think you're well. It seems like shock, to me." The willowy drin circled towards the novice, so that she could better see her features. Her green eyes were shining, but dilated; she looked dazed. "Will you see a Yellow? Or will you ignore that piece of friendly advice as well?" Sarcasm cracked like a whip in the space between them. Burn it. Hot tears sprang to her eyes and rage roiled in her gut. She had promised herself that she would not cry when she next saw her friend, and here she was, the very picture of distress.

Avyra was... well, taken aback by the sudden hostility her friend was showing. Could that really be Muireen? The Drin was furious with her, face contorted into anger.

"Avrya." Her voice cut like a dagger, shaking slightly. There were tears in her eyes. "I don't think you're well. It seems like shock, to me. Will you see a Yellow? Or will you ignore that piece of friendly advice as well?"

"I..." Avyra didn't know how to respond to this. Had her and Terric's kiss just been shock? She hoped not. She hoped that...

They were in the middle of a war. And she was dazed off.

"I'm not. Don't worry. None of this is my blood. You don't need to be concerned about me. I'm fine." She paused, looking at Muireen's features. Light, the girl looked so scared. For her? That couldn't be right. Nobody cared that much about the likes of Avyra.

"I'm sorry if I worried you. There was no reason to be." She had no clue what to say.

Muireen do Morny a'Lordeine
"I..." Avrya trailed off into uncertain silence: if Muireen had been so inclined, she could have sliced the tension with one of her knives. The Murandian stared at her friend, her hazel eyes narrowed into angry slits, her brows furrowed and her lips pinched into a thin line. That's right, Muireen thought savagely, There is no excuse. She stood completely still, her hands balled into fists, and her nails bit at her palms. Rage washed over her in waves - she shook, wishing that she cared less about the tiny Novice that had no regard for herself. She was covered in blood, it was likely matted in her hair, and here she was, dreamy and dazy - she'd gone and broken her mind in the gore.

"I'm not. Don't worry -" Avrya's voice took on a defensive tone, and the tiny Cairheinin seemed to shy away from Muireen's intensity. "None of this is my blood," she said quickly, her eyes darting from her ruined garment back to meet her gaze, "You don't need to be concerned about me. I'm fine. I'm sorry if I worried you. There was no reason to be." Her voice was flat, resigned, detached - there was something very wrong with this girl, and she refused to admit it. Muireen knew that some people were more guarded than others - not everyone was so candid or indiscreet as she - but she had never seen so much recklessness paired with such high walls.

"I don't need to be concerned? I don't need to be concerned?" Muireen echoed her friend accusingly, her words as sharp as razors - "Avrya, you told me yourself that Novices aren't taught much about the One Power, and you're running amok like the Captain-General of the Green Ajah! If that is not your blood, who's is it? And why are you covered in it? You know as well as I that we were ordered to remain indoors!" Muireen said nothing of the misfortune that had passed at Lake Somal, but she had had reason for leaving the Tower, and more importantly, she had had backup.

"You dart in front of a to'raken as though you are indestructible, without a word to me, and when I next find you, you look as though you've stood beside a guillotine!" Muireen was crying in truth, now - her hands betrayed her as well, waving wildly with emphasis - "You matter to me and you discard my concern as if its a week-old chamberpot! I am glad you are fine," she snapped, hissing syllables through her teeth, and did not dare acknowledge her tears by wiping them away, "I am not. I thought we were friends."

"I don't need to be concerned? I don't need to be concerned?" Muireen's voice rose like thunder, even though she wasn't a channeler. Avyra shyed away further. She didn't want to have this talk. "Avrya, you told me yourself that Novices aren't taught much about the One Power, and you're running amok like the Captain-General of the Green Ajah! If that is not your blood, who's is it? And why are you covered in it? You know as well as I that we were ordered to remain indoors!" She paused, and Avyra thought she would have a break, but she kept on going.

"You dart in front of a to'raken as though you are indestructible, without a word to me, and when I next find you, you look as though you've stood beside a guillotine! You matter to me and you discard my concern as if its a week-old chamberpot! I am glad you are fine. I am not. I thought we were friends." Her voice was a hiss. Avyra could see tears in her friend's eyes.

Suddenly Terric's kiss seemed to be a million years ago. Avyra bristled defensively.

"I'm tired of being discarded. Pushed under the rug. Kicked around like someone's little puppy." Her words were soft. "I will never be anything here in the Tower. I don't see how you could want to be my friend. I don't deserve it. I don't deserve anything good. I thought I could help something tonight, but I was wrong. I'm too weak and pathetic to help anyone. To even be noticed." She didn't deserve that kiss.

Avyra could feel her tears coming as well, and she turned away before Muireen could reply. Avyra has spoken the truth. There was no changing it.

Muireen do Morny a'Lordeine
"I'm tired of being discarded," Avrya said softly. Her defiant expression crumpled beneath her grief. Muireen did not know what to make of her friend; she had risked her life to try and protect her, and she thought she was being discarded? Disbelief and rage coursed through her, and her tears would be accompanied with hiccuping sobs soon if she did not tread lightly. I'd give my left foot for the Void, she thought savagely, suddenly embarrassed by the broken heart that she wore on her sleeve. "Pushed under the rug. Kicked around like someone's little puppy," the Accepted continued. "I will never be anything here in the Tower. I don't see how you could want to be my friend. I don't deserve it. I don't deserve anything good. I thought I could help something tonight, but I was wrong. I'm too weak and pathetic to help anyone. To even be noticed."

Muireen's expression melted from rage to complete disbelief. Avrya did not have to earn her affection or her care; she loved her because she simply was - hideously brave and irresponsible, funny and delightful, and a glowing spark of light in a world that had been consumed by death and hopelessness. Her mouth worked wordlessly - how had Avrya even gotten any of this into her head? The Accepted's words ran through her head again and again, and Muireen could not make heads or tails of any of it. Useless? You don't deserve anything good?? Who have you ever hurt? She scrutinized her as best she could while she was crying - and that was to say, she could not be very discerning at all with blurred vision - and wished that she understood what had been so terribly broken within her dearest and only friend.

And then Avrya tried to brush past her.

"Don't you dare walk away from me," she said softly, her voice taking on a deadly quality; tears still streamed freely down her face, and Avrya's pain had forged her anger into a weapon. "You're not going anywhere until you tell me who has hurt you this badly, Avrya." Muireen reached for Avrya's shoulder and gripped the girl tightly; though they were both small, Muireen had spent more time in the Warder Yards and could hold her still if she wished. She held her tight enough to leave bruises. A small shudder passed through her as she remembered all the nights she had spent alone, nursing a broken heart that had never fully healed: Daev was in Whitebridge with his prettier wife and a pretty baby, and she was here at the Tower, still unable to admit defeat to her father that she missed so dearly. Muireen could not bear the thought of Avrya hurting like that - and if that meant she would do anything to remedy it.

"And once you have told me who has done this to you - who has made you believe this - I am going to kill them."

Muireen grabbed her forcefully and Avyra couldn't help but give a soft cry of confusion.

"Don't you dare walk away from me," Muireen replied, her voice soft and cold, cheeks wet with tears. "You're not going anywhere until you tell me who has hurt you this badly, Avrya." She paused for a moment. "And once you have told me who has done this to you - who has made you believe this - I am going to kill them."

"Let go of me," Avyra said, softly, her heart racing. She didn't want to be caught in this. She didn't want to deal with this tonight. "Nobody did this to me. Its the truth. I can't do anything."

She didn't care anymore. She shook, letting her feelings out. "I'm useless here. I might be able to use the One Power but that's no use if I'll always look like a child. I'll never look like a real Aes Sedai. They're all so regal and beautiful. I'm too blinding short to be noticed by anyone, much less thought of as anything close to beautiful. Don't waste your breath on me."

She tried to get away again. Just. Leave the world. But it was useless, Muireen was bigger and stronger. It didn't take much to hold Avyra in place. She was so weak.

Muireen do Morny a'Lordeine
Muireen blinked, attempting to clear the tears from her vision and make sense of what she heard: the source of Avrya's distorted perception was her physical appearance?

"Look at me," Muireen said fiercely, holding Avrya in place, forcing the Accepted to look at her whether she wanted to or not. "Do I look anything like a Warder? And don't you lie to me, Avrya." Her slim and short-stature did not mark her for a warrior any more than Terric's shaggy mutt looked like a war-hound. "Can you think of anyone that would want my Bond, knowing that I might be a liability? I can't punch a Trolloc in the face or slice a Myrddraal in half. That's the sort of Warder you hear about in the stories." The words exploded off her tongue - the confession was not as freeing as she would have liked for it to be.

"But I'm still here," she said, her tone softened. "And I'm training hard. I'm fairly good with throwing knives. I'm getting better with my war fans. And you - Light Avrya! - since when does channeling have anything to do with how you look? Anyone that's unsworn their Oaths looks about your age, and almost everyone has unsworn. Pretty soon, only Tar Valon will have ageless Aes Sedai! And this is all beside the point-" Muireen could have killed herself for rambling, but she'd never dealt with anything like this before.

"The point, Avrya," she said finally, "Is that even if you don't think you're beautiful, I think you are. And even if people disagree, no one can say you don't have a spine of steel: you accused a to'raken of not having enough honor! That bloody flying cow was going to kill us all and you thought it didn't have any honor! I'm angry with you because you are reckless, not because you are worthless: I am angry with you because you might have gotten yourself killed, and if you had, the Tower would have lost the most vibrant, brave, and strongest Accepted that I know." Declarations of affection were easy for the Murandian; the truth flowed like silk, now that the rage had faded from her voice. She did not release the small Accepted, but pulled her in closer, then wrapped her arms around her bloodied dress in a tight hug.

Her friend began to sob.

"I know it hurts," she murmured. "I loved once," she admitted, her voice turning bitter. "I went all the way to Whitebrigde for him. Do you know how far that is from Mindea? It's very far. That was a very long time in a saddle." Muireen ran her fingers through Avrya's thick hair, carefully combing out clumps of blood. It was awkward to speak of Daev, and it showed, but she hoped that truth would help her friend. "And when I got to Whitebridge, he told me that he'd found a prettier woman. So I chopped off all my hair and came to the Grey Tower to learn how to break his nose." Her curly hair had grown out quite a bit in the past year; it was nearly shoulder length now. Muireen doubted that it would ever return to its former glory now that she had committed herself to a Fancloak.

"I didn't think I would stay," she continued. "But then I met you, and Terric, and Fiona." The fact that she could say the Andoran's name without turning a shade of purple was a testament to her composure. "Then I stayed because I care. And before you try and say anything," Muireen said sternly, "You're my best friend. And if you don't believe me, I'll prove it. We'll go drinking. Or steal some sweet buns, or light some Trollocs on fire. Alright?"

Muireen held her in place, not letting her leave, replying to everything evenly, if a bit shaken by Avyra's accusations.

I'm angry with you because you are reckless, not because you are worthless: I am angry with you because you might have gotten yourself killed, and if you had, the Tower would have lost the most vibrant, brave, and strongest Accepted that I know."

Avyra, well, could feel tears in her eyes, Muireen staring her down intensely. Then she pulled the small Novice close, wrapping arms around her and holding her head in one hand. Avyra finally broke, sobbing into Muireen's shoulder.

"I know it hurts. I loved once. I went all the way to Whitebrigde for him. Do you know how far that is from Mindea? It's very far. That was a very long time in a saddle." She began to comb out clumps of blood from Avyra's long hair. "And when I got to Whitebridge, he told me that he'd found a prettier woman. So I chopped off all my hair and came to the Grey Tower to learn how to break his nose."

Avyra couldn't help but grin, slightly, through her tears.

"I didn't think I would stay. But then I met you, and Terric, and Fiona. Then I stayed because I care. And before you try and say anything, you're my best friend. And if you don't believe me, I'll prove it. We'll go drinking. Or steal some sweet buns, or light some Trollocs on fire. Alright?"

Avyra sighed, closing her eyes. "That would be nice, but I'm just too tired. Emotionally and physically. Maybe I was foolish today. I just wanted to help. To be useful, for once. I don't think I did."

She looked up at Muireen. "We could go to the kitchens and ask for something. Soup. It would be nice on a day like this." She shivered. "I'm sorry to bother you, Muireen. I really am. You shouldn't worry about me, honestly. I'm not anything important here."
