Dog Days of Summer [Attn: Fiona, Muireen, Avyra]

Terric
Terric enjoyed kitchen duty, the learning ranks would be assigned simple tasks like peeling vegetables portioning food. If the finished early they had the rest of the chore hour to themselves. The students with a stronger culinary inclination were given more advanced duties like assisting the prep cooks. This morning, Terric sat on the ground behind the kitchens peeling potatoes. He sat in a loose ring with other learning rank as they peeled. With deft motions of his paring knife, he separated the skins from the potato. The naked potatoes were then chopped and put in large pots. The pots would be carried back into the kitchen and set at a nice boil. The skins would be dumped in the compost bins for the tower gardens. The other learning ranks sat on stools or on the floor chatting amongst themselves. They were able to chat as much as they wanted as long as their work didn’t flag or fall behind. If he finished early, he planned to talk to the pastry chef and see if he could learn some pointers, and maybe charm himself a few pastries.

Idly listening to some Novice’s gossiping about the Gaidin, Terric continued to peel potatoes, passing them to be chopped before put in the pots. He froze as he heard a commotion from around the corner towards the bins where the cooks threw out old food. Many of the disturbing rumors floating around the Tower had him on edge. He reached over, snagging a chef’s knife from one of the Drin cutting potatoes and stood to investigate. He flipped the knife into a reverse grip hiding it behind his arm as he crept towards the corner of the building, feet silent on the stones, even in Wetlander boots. As he neared the corner, he heard more bumping and what sounded like rummaging. He couldn’t see much form his angle so he stepped around the corner, scanning for threats, knife at the read.

One of the bins as knocked on its side and Terric could see the shaggy and emaciated hind quarters of some sort of stray dog. The cooks would probably have chased him away, but the dog was just hungry and alone. He felt he understood the animal on a deeper level. He clicked his tongue to the dog, squatting nearby and slowly extending a hand to be sniffed. The dog backed out of the garbage bin and sniffed at Terric. The poor thing looked like it hadn’t been fed properly in weeks. He could see his ribs through his matted fur. He began growling, “It’s ok, boy,” Terric said in a soft whisper. “Here, let me get you some real food.” This seemed to get through to the dog and he stopped growling and settled down to wait with a look Terric could only describe as skeptical. Great, Terric, now you think dogs are giving you funny looks? What’s next, is your dinner going to insult you? Terric thought to himself as he quietly made his way back around the corner. Where would he get food? He could try to convince a cook to let the dog have some meat or something. That is what dogs ate right? They had mouths full of big pointy teeth. They had to be predators right? They didn’t quite act like predators though. He really didn’t know. People did not keep dogs very often in the Three-fold Land and most books he had read involving dogs were fanciful adventure books with faithful dog companions. Those rarely talked about how to keep a dog healthy.
OOC: Yeah it kinda started as a joke.... it's not anymore sorry not sorry

Dog details: Large breed, malnourished, matted fur that might have been light brown, very expressive, seems rather intelligent

Avyra
Being stuck with food prep wasn't so bad, when she had friends there to help. Her cooking itself was on par with eating dirt, but she could cut potatoes eithout slicing her finger open. It was better than dish work.

She was chatting quietly with Muireen and Fiona as she worked, sitting beside Terric as she worked through her pile of potatoes, cutting them into even pieces before tossing them into the pot. It was long work, but talk made it feel shorter, which she enjoyed.

However, she heard a sound, and saw Terric perk up and stand. She looked over, watching him creep to the other side of the building. Odd. She stood too, motioning for the others to follow.

By the time they approached, Terric was already trying to make friends with a stray dog, shaggy and matted. Its fur was dark, but had lighter undertones that suggested that it was actually a more golden color. It was a big dog, but thin, unfed. Avyra's heart softened; she felt so bad for the poor thing.

She bent down, holding out a hand, clicking softly between her teeth. "Its okay, boy. Don't be scared." The dog growled again, backing up, tail between its legs. She didn't back off, but didn't get closer. She just held her hand there for it.

The creature paused, watching her hand. Then he crept forward, giving her a sniff. "There you go," Avyra murmured to him. She didn't try to pet him. "Its okay."
