Terric
"Well, we do have a lot of it. Swimming is fun, actually. I'd imagine you'd be good at it too, with your build." With his build? He had once read a natural history book with a picture of a fish. Those alien creatures were meant to swim. He was an Aielman, he was meant to run across the desert. No wonder Wetlanders were so strange.

Avyra stared at the water wistfully, as if she actually wanted to swim in it. "You probably never get this from... ah... Wetlanders like me..” She seemed uneasy to Terric’s trained eye, “But I do want to see your home. I've never been to a place like it." She sighed. "I'd probably end up getting killed by something out there, though."

He couldn’t believe this this little Wetlander was serious. Maybe once she was a full Aes Sedai. Aiel would be extremely unlikely to kill an Aes Sedai, even one from the land of Treekillers. He’d have to teach her how to avoid being bit by a two step though. Wait, was he really considering taking this Chairienin back to the Three-fold Land. He wasn’t sure if his spear brothers would have a good laugh, or drag him into a dark corner and beat some sense into him.

She continued, still seeming uneasy, "What about... ah... touching, too? You seem to have gotten a tad defensive back there when I held your arm. And I told you to tell me if I do something offensive to you." She wagged her finger up at him, doing her best to appear stern. The gesture was so absurd but so genuine. Terric let the hint of a smile slip through, he couldn’t help it. Light help him but he was growing to like this tiny Treekiller.

“You have no toh. Aiel just… Aiel don’t touch much in public, those gestures are reserved for close friends, and lovers. Even then, they reserve most affection for when they are alone. As is decent.” He considered. He was a guest in these lands. He had already decided that he would follow local customs. Within reason, he would not sink to using a sword, and beds were useless contraptions. He stepped closer to the pond and offered his arm, “I’d rather not offend you either.”

He would find the balance between being Aiel and not insulting his hosts. He would have felt better if he had an actual cadin’sor maybe he could get Drin’far’ji uniform cut from algode. Maybe not, that seemed like a ridiculous half measure.

The ground this close to the pond was extremely wet. It was nearly impossible to take his eyes off the depths in front of him. On his journey across the Wetlands, he had forded a river that he considered enormous, though most people in these lands wouldn’t find it particularly intimidating. The slow moving, waste deep water disturbed him enough that subsequently he went out of his way to find bridges or pay ferrymen when he needed to cross. He had only crossed that first river out of necessity. He stared down into the pond’s unknown depths.

He smiled at her, and she couldn't blame him. Avyra must look very absurd, wagging a disciplinary finger at a man who towered a foot and a half, maybe more, over her head and was probably about three times her size.

How ironic that she was enjoying the company of man who she had been taught to fear. Her mother might not have told her stories of the Aiel but the other children had. And Terric wasn't any of them, and she doubted the other Aiel were, too. But Terric, honestly, was just like a little kitten. A little kitten that could pick her up in one arm and toss her over his shoulder with no difficulty, but a little kitten all the same.

“You have no toh. Aiel just… Aiel don’t touch much in public, those gestures are reserved for close friends, and lovers. Even then, they reserve most affection for when they are alone. As is decent.” He stepped closer to her, offering one of his arms. “I’d rather not offend you either.”

She raised an eyebrow, taking his forearm with a soft hand. "That makes both of us. I like being around you, Terric, and I don't want us to stop talking over a misunderstanding because of some form of ignorance." She paused. "But making you uncomfortable is not what I want to do." She released his arm with a smile. "So no touching."

Avyra looked back down at the lake, amazed that he had gotten even this close. The water almost touched their toes. "Its a pity they make us novices wear these white... sacks. I would much rather be wearing something I can get dirty. Putting your feet in the water feels fantastic."

Terric
She wanted to put her feet in the water? Terric mentally cringed at the thought, and at the thought of what the Wise Ones would do if she was caught doing such a thing back in the Three-fold Lands. She had been right. The water was beautiful, but not for the reasons she thought. Sure, the moonlight sparkled off the water like precious gems and the croaking frogs and chittering insects could make one forget they were in a city. These weren’t why this place was beautiful. The beauty was in the water itself. It’s potential. He couldn’t begin to contemplate how long a hold could be sustained on the amounts of water the Wetlanders squandered. Like this Avyra was considering climbing into. There was great beauty in potential. He wouldn’t risk the depths below any time soon if he had his way, but he would enjoy this moment marveling at the potential that lay before him, with his new friend holding on to his arm.
An unseasonably chilly breeze blew through the garden disturbing the pond. The water splashed up around their feet. Terric edged back pulling Avyra, who still held onto his arm, back with him. The wind continued to blow tossing his already unruly hair and fluttering her white skirts around her ankles.

He a mistrustful glance at the now choppy waters then back at Avyra and asked, “Avyra, why do you like to swim?”

As the breeze kicked up and rattled the waves he all but jumped back, his strength causing him to pull her back, too, almost off her feet. He looked almost fearfully at the water's edge and the waves that were now at the shore. It was so odd to see this big, strong man afraid of the tiny waves that were on the shore now.

"Avyra, why do you like to swim?"

She looked over to him, smiling. "I'm not quite sure why. I find it fun, and the water is nice and cool. You feel refreshed after it, in a way." She paused, then let go to walk over to the edge, bending down to cup some of the cool water in her hands.

"You don't have to get in it but it won't bite you. There's no reason to be scared of it. Here, hold it." She held out her hand, looking at him expectedly.

Terric
Avyra smiled up at him, eyes gleaming in the moonlight. "I'm not quite sure why. I find it fun, and the water is nice and cool. You feel refreshed after it, in a way."

Refreshed? If she wanted to feel refreshed, she should try a sweat tent. I wonder if I can find one in the city.

Terric watched in confusion as she bent down over the pond with her hands cupped. She stood and returned moving carefully trying not to drip water. "You don't have to get in it but it won't bite you. There's no reason to be scared of it. Here, hold it." She held it out to him expectantly.

He tried not to let the incredulity show on his face. He wasn’t afraid of a hand full of water. She obviously didn’t understand, but she obviously cared. He hadn’t made many friends since he had crossed the Dragon Wall. If this was important to her, he would play along. He considered explaining how much she had misunderstood the situation, but he did not want to shame her.

He reached out with his hands and cupped them below hers. “What do you want me to do with the water?” he asked, fighting to keep skepticism out of his voice.

She let the water fall into his hands. "I don't know... hold it? Put it back in the pond? I don't know." She sighed. Yeah, she was probably on the wrong track.

"What is it, really? The handfull doesn't scare you, yet you wanted to pull me away from the shore when the waves kicked up. Water is strong, yes, and it is dangerous in many ways, but the waves from that pond wouldn't have even started to pull me out into the pond, much less someone as big as you are." She was obviously trying to work him out.

This was hard. Harder than she had thought it would be. She, honestly, wanted to hear more about his culture. Cairhien wasn't interesting. The Three Fold Land was. She had so many questions, but she didn't want to overwelm him. In a way, too, she felt bad for this poor man. He had come from a place so different and was tossed into somewhere completely alien.

He must miss his home very much.

But she didn't say anything about that.

Terric
He returned to the pond, moving slowly, careful not to spill a drop. Once he was at the edge, eh opened his hands and let the water, reverently fall from his hands back into the pond. As the water flowed between his fingers, he mulled over his answer. He stared into the pond, black with moonlight glittering on the surface. He looked deeper, his chest clenched as he stared into the unfathomable depths.

“It’s so wonderful,” he whispered, “but there’s so much.” It was a beauty best observed from a distance, only approached by the foolhardy or the well prepared. Like a lioness on her rise. He knelt before the water and slowly dipped his fingers in it. He lowered in his hand. His heart began to pound a mad rhythm as the cold abyss swallowed his hand up to the wrist. He forced himself to force his hand in deeper, soaking the sleeve of his grey uniform. His hand hit the silty bottom and he dug his fingers in for dear life. His pulse was no longer pounding in his ears. He kept his face blank through the entire experience. He liked Avyra well enough, but this weakness, this weakness was a personal matter.

He stood from the pool and wiped his hand clean on a handkerchief and returned to Avyra’s side. He forced himself to smile. “Want to see if anybody’s at the training yard?”

Terric moved away from her, back to the water, carefully putting the handful back. He then stared at the water for a moment, dipping his fingers, then his hand in, murmuring about how much there was. He held his hand there for a moment, expression blank, but Avyra knew he was thinking something. Feeling something. Slowly, he withdrew, wiping his hand clean. Then gave her a forced smile.

"Want to see if anybody's at the training yard?"

She nodded, shrugging. "Sounds good to me. Lead the way." There was concern in her eyes, though. Had she done something? She walked over, holding his hand, giving it a reassuring squeeze before letting go.

"However," she paused, searching for a way to lighten the mood. "If you find nobody, I must apologize. I doubt I'll make a worthy opponent in the Yards. As you said before, I really can't hurt much of anybody without the Power."

Terric
“If you wish, we can find somewhere else to walk,” Terric truly did not care, he just needed to be away from thoughts of the Abyss. Maybe the pond would be more tolerable in the sunlight. He had already proved there was a bottom. His rational mind knew that, but sometimes rationality paled in the face of the unknown.

With an effort, he managed to pull his thoughts back from the Abyss and set off for the training yard. His wet sleeve still drew his thoughts back to the pond, and he forgot to shorten his stride. He halted to wait for her. He could see her struggling a long in the darkness, her white dress almost luminous to his night eyes. We just met, why does she care about me? He asked himself as he walked back to her. He’d have to ask her at some point.

He reached a hand down to her, “I can carry you again if you need.”

Yes, he was nervous. She could tell, she could feel it, almost, from him. Avyra had just met him, yes, but what he was doing now seemed clearly out of character for the Aiel who had been, not twenty minutes ago, shoving his face with sweet buns.

He set off at a fast pace and she huffed, softly, physically unable to keep up. Mostly because of her dress, which fit horribly loose, and was incredibly long on her short form. It almost swallowed her up with how thin she was.

But, thankfully, Terric stopped, waiting for her to catch up. She was clearly out of breath, her chest and small shoulders almost heaving. He seemed to notice, and offered to carry her again.

She had a particular dislike for people picking her up, mostly because she had been picked up before because of her sheer "cuteness." But she really couldn't turn Terric down; his arms were surely better than running. So she nodded, taking the moment to catch her breath.

It was shocking how light she was to him; she had thought she would have at least weighed something to the strong Aiel. But he carried her easily, striding along at the same extremely fast pace. Why go so fast?

"What else haven't you told me?" She asked from his arms. "About your people, I mean. What are your days usually like in the Three Fold Land?" She had almost called it the Wastes again, but she told herself to never call it that ever again.
