Archery Spar [Attn: Bella, Marit and others?]

Post by Roan » June 20th, 2015, 5:58 pm

The Warder Yards hadn’t changed much in Riahana’s time away from the yards. The people had changed, yes, but the Yards themselves, and what went on seemed the same. There was a form of comfort falling back into the routine of life in the Grey Tower. Of course, she lived in family quarters in the Yellow Halls, was married to a gentle bear of a man, and had twins to keep her on her toes, but. . .being back in the yards? It seemed as if no time had passed at all. (At least until the day after a spar, when she felt her age a bit more than she once did.)

Last week, the Gaidar put up a notice around the yards announcing an Archery Spar, welcoming anyone who wanted to try their hand at moving targets. For Riahana, it was a way to hopefully meet others who had an affinity for the bow. . .people she could train with, or perhaps train if they wanted to improve. For those who might join? It was a chance to do something other than practice on the range, or arrange time on the obstacle course.

When Riahana arrived at the armory, noticed a Ji’dar who was working with the quarter master that day. Giving a small smile, and inclining her head ever so slightly, Riahana said, “Morning, Ji’. I require equipment for the Archery Sparring course. Jackets, sparring bows and arrows. Let’s start with three of each color. If more people join, we can grab more gear.”

“Of course, Gaidar. One moment,” the young woman replied. It didn’t take long for her to pull together the equipment. She laid it on the counter, “Do you require help carrying this to the sparring area?”

Ria smiled and shook her head, “No, I think I can manage, but thank you.” She knew why the woman asked. . .manning the armory was not the most exciting chore on the Tower grounds, especially if it was cleaning day. Slinging the jackets over one shoulder, the quivers of special arrows over another, Ria put the strings for the sparring bows in one of her pouches before taking the bows three to each hand.

With the gear gathered, Ria headed to the sparring arena, and couldn’t help a trip down memory lane. When she was but a Drin’, still wet behind the ears, a couple of Ji’ asked her to join them in a spar. She had become fairly proficient on the range, but the sparring arena was a very different challenge. It was the first time she faced off against live opponents, and the first time Ria had tried to hit a moving target. The arrows left pretty impressive bruises, but the spar was great fun, and solidified Riahana’s interest in her weapon of choice.

The arena itself held a simple layout with a number of trees, and boulders of varying sizes. There were two platforms on opposite ends, both with a bell mounted to a post, and a couple of observation platforms. Many of the trees had branches low enough to allow the quick and nimble to climb, but with the white jackets on, the would-be assassins became sitting targets.

When Ria arrived, she set the bows, quivers and jackets down. She was the first to arrive, and hoped she wouldn’t be the only one to show. While she waited, she started to do some simple stretches just to loosen up. She couldn’t help but wonder who might show up.

((OOC: OK Here's the start. If we don't have even numbers, I will come up with an NPC to even things out. Once everyone arrives, we'll figure out who is on the pink versus green teams. :) ))

Lysira Viathene Walker Gaidar Although she of course did not know it, Lysira's thoughts were very similar to Riahana's: that everything and nothing had changed in the interceding years, although thanks to that odd turn with an Object of Power, Lysira's age had changed less than most. Or it had changed, and then changed back...

With her son safely and happily ensconced in their rooms with his latest tome excavated from the libraries, Lysira decided it was time to limber up. Although she had kept up with her training as much as she could at the Cairhein manor, seeing the note for a spar from a familiar name was just what she needed and thus why she was the second to show up.

Smiling in greeting, she walked up to Riahana and bowed. She didn't know how much the other woman would remember her signs, but she could do well enough as needed.

[[OOC: I think I may bring in an NPC to start setting up Lys' next translator.]]

Riahana couldn't help the full fledged grin and returned the bow in kind, "Lysira!" She looked up for a second, as if in thought, and signed as she spoke, "It has been far too long, and it is good to see an old friend." Well. . .she almost signed what she spoke. What she actually signed was, It has been far too long, and it is daring to see a naked trout.

The Gaidar scratched her scalp for a second, "I am a bit rusty on signs, but I recall some things...I think." She smirked, "If I signed something offensive, I hope you accept my apology." She looked around the sparring arena, "It doesn't seem like it was all that long ago that I was here as a Drin' and you were helping the wet-behind the ears girl find her footing in the Yards. Perhaps after our spar, we might catch up over an ale?"

[[OOC: Cool deal. Ria is rusty on the signs, though I hope it doesn't take her too long to remember]]

The diminutive Gaidar grinned. It was good to see an old friend. Lifting her hands, she signed slowly and mouthed the words. You need only read them, my friend. You need not speak in them, so all is well. She paused, reflecting upon the comfort of being among her home once again, and the people there in. I would be happy to share an ale with you later on.

Ria smiled warmly, "It's settled, then. Ale after the spar." She had laid out the jackets just as Mouse arrived, and turned her attention to the special arrows. She took three arrows of each color and put them into one quiver. It wasn't easy to 'stir' them, but she did the best she could. "I figured we could draw arrows to see who's on the green versus red team. I'm expecting a few more people to show up, though I have no idea how many of them have participated in an archery spar before."

The Gaidar paused and flashed a smirk to her friend, "Should be fun!"

Stepping through the gateway and into the Channeling Yard, Amayani couldn't help but smile at being back on familiar grounds. Not that the grounds of the Citadel were unfamiliar, but this was home. And she'd been gone for far too long. For months she'd been overseeing things in the Citadel. It was her duty as Mistress of Arms to care for the members of the Yard, and in the absence of a Gaidin Captain that included checking in on those who had taken up residence in the Citadel as well. Her stay had just taken a little longer than she'd planned.

Bidding farewell to Riven, leaving him to do whatever he wished, Yani headed towards the Warder Yards in a quick stride, curious as to how things had fared there lately. It wasn't that she didn't trust Ubriel to take care of things; quite the opposite, she had full confidence in the Mistress of Training, which is why she felt that she could stay as long as she had up north. But she still felt the weight of her office on her shoulders, and she dreaded the stack of papers that certainly would be piled up on her desk; those not urgent enough that Ubriel had dealt with them in her absence, or shipped north with a messenger.

Reaching the Warder Hall, Yani stopped by the notice board and took a quick scan of the papers there, catching up on current classes and other important notices. One caught her eye, both due to the nature of it and because of the name signed under it. An Archery Spar was ages since she'd had the chance to enjoy. And the name..

She had received reports from Ubriel on the recent returned Gaidar and Gaidin, all of them, and it pleased her greatly to have those back. And both Riahana Ferria and Lysira Walker were like her, experts of the Bow. Lysira had been the one to teach her the use of a bow all those years back. It would be great seeing her again, and testing her strength against the woman. She assumed Lysira would be joining the spar Riahana was setting up.

And she was most certainly joining the spar herself. Not only was it a too good opportunity to enjoy a day with the bow, but it also gave her a chance to meet up with the newly returned Gaidar. Originally she'd planned to summon them both at some point now that she was back, but seeing as the spar was later that day.. Well, it looked like she'd gotten back just in time.

A few hours later, after having barely scratched the pile of papers - it felt that way in the least - Yani was heading out of the Warder Halls with her sparring bow in hand and an empty quiver at her side, dressed in dark green shirt and breeches that she wouldn't mind too much if got stains from the arrows,. The bow was of similar design to her regular one, a recurved bow, but it was much weaker as not to injure the target, apart from bruises.

Approaching the sparring area, she spotted the two Gaidar and strode up to them.

"Welcome home, Sisters," she greeting the two older women respectfully. "I'm Amayani a'Sorene, the current Mistress of Arms. I don't know if you remember, but you taught me how to use this," she said with a smile, looking at Lysira and remembering fondly the class she'd taken as a young Drin all those years ago. It struck her as she looked at the smaller woman that she seemed younger than she ought to be, given the years. But then again, so did she...

"I would've welcomed you back earlier," she added, addressing them both, "but I've been away at the Citadel for some time, and just got back this morning. I saw the note on the spar, and hoped to find you both here. I hope you've both settled back in well, and feel at home again?" Though her voice betrayed nothing, she felt a little nervous facing two of her former superiors, both of whom she respected in more ways than one.

Turning from Riahana to their newest addition, Lysira did recognize the woman although time had changed them both. Then again, maybe not as much as it should have...but the Wheel wove odd patterns sometimes, did it not? She offered a warm smile and small bow to the woman who was now ranked above her.

I remember you well, she signed, slowly and hoping she would be able to read it. It is a pleasure to see you again.

Riahana smiled to the newcomer, "Well met, Amayani. It seems we have at least one thing in common, as Lysira Gaidar taught me the bow, as well." She smirked, "Today will prove interesting, then. The potential for students going up against their former instructor?"

Hearing a branch snap behind her, Ria turned to see a Ji'alantin walk up. He looked a little uncertain, and cleared his throat before asking, "Is this the archery spar meet up?"

Ria gave a nod, "Yes it is. If you wish to join in then you are in the right place."

The young man looked to each of the women, and his eyes went slightly wide as they landed on the Mistress of Arms, "I was expecting more. . .trainees to be here."

Ria felt for the young man. It would be intimidating to spar with a fully raised Gaidin or Gaidar, but to go up against more than one...including the Mistress of Arms? She recalled all to well her training sessions with her great grandfather-in-law, the Freak of the Yards, Caden Ives. Oh she learned quickly, to be sure, but those days. . . those days she felt most out of her depth. It was those moments, though, that pushed her to work harder, and continually improve. . .to always be better and stronger when she next faced him. Perhaps today would encourage the young Ji' in a similar manner.

Ria too hoped for more of the training ranks, but she kept the thought to herself, "Consider this, Ji'. . .you have three experts with the bow here. . .three people you can learn a great deal from, and you have us all to yourself for the duration of the spar. Perhaps even longer, as a good sparring session should conclude with a spot of ale after." She flashed a smirk, "Now, perhaps you can tell us who you are?"

The man squared his shoulders a bit with the encouragement from Ria, "I am Artem Nilan, and as you can see, I am a ji'alantin. My weapon of choice is the sword, but bow offers advantages. . .and I could use as much practice as I can get."

Ria nodded, "That is why we are here." She took two of the special arrows of each color, so two green and two red, and placed them in a quiver, then mixed them about a bit. "I figured the best way to choose sides was for us each to pick an arrow. Those with the arrow of the same color are on the same team." She held the quiver out, "So take an arrow, everyone."

((OOC: I can do a random number generator to see who is on what team or we could do it something like Lys and Artem against Amayani and Riahana. Thoughts?))

((OOC: I figured I'd jump in with just an OOC note before writing the IC reply. Roan, if you're writing for Artem, then I think Lys/Artem and Ria/Amayani is a good set up so you don't have to write with yourself! Should keep things good and mixed up. :) ))

((Amendment after Bree's post: well, I was thinking of introducing a possible interpreter NPC so I can add her to give us an even number.))

Makenna had been itching to work with her crossbow again since taking the initial lesson in aiming for the ranged weapon. The nervous butterflies in her stomach would have been enough to stop her and turn her away when she was younger. As a grown woman with enough experience in her life to have endured far more embarrassment than simply being an unknown face, she held her head up and shoulders back as she marched into the sparring yard. She took up a place somewhat to one side just inside the gate and watched a while wondering what she needed to do. Everyone seemed to be wearing a suit of protective gear and using some kind of blunted missiles in place of actual arrows. She looked around wondering if anyone would notice and give her directions to the outfitter so that she could join in or if she would have to stand aside to just wait.

OOC: Hello everybody. I need to get Makenna moving and she will make a fun target with a thick hide and hard feelings to hurt. Someone get me outfitted! :p
