Unlikely Allies [Attn: Illyria]

Post by Carra » September 7th, 2014, 5:39 am

“This I Foretell,” Carra spoke, “and swear under the Light that I can say no clearer. The Crimson Banner has fallen and the Shadow has found the key into the heart of the Towers. A battle fought has won, but the war has not yet begun. Rise up Blood of Men, Blood of Women and purge the shadows within the Heart. With this shadow, only death can follow. This I Foretell.”

And in the stunned silence, for Carra to kneel on both knees in front of the Amyrlin Seat, she looked up at her like a warrior awaiting a mission, a lone soldier ready to die at the command of one. Amadie. Light, please forgive me just this.

"I am called to you, and I answer my calling now. I pray you, accept me as a Sister of the Red Ajah."

She left the chamber where she was "raised" to Aes Sedai still a little in shell shock. Carra could repeatedly hear the words of her Foretelling in her head, and her wish for acceptance. Amadie had accepted her and it was more then she could have hoped for. Carra rarely made secondary plans. But the rioting silence drove them all out. The Hall was then conviened and Carra was basically left out of the discussion. She wasn't sure what to think or how to feel; or even where to go.

There was no Ajah to welcome her. No Aes Sedai to bring her home. No room for her to call hers or a bed for her to lay her head. So Carra defaulted to the one place she knew and returned to her room in the Accepted halls and until she had a better plan it would have to do for the night. She felt that staying with the Accepteds for one night would do but now that she was Aes Sedai - and she was! - she couldn't stay here for long. Either she would locate into Hama Valon or sleep on the floor in Amadie's room if need be. She was Amyrlin now, it would not hurt to stay with her. Rumors be damned.

Besides, Carra could now honestly say that any reputation she could have in the Tower is now Red, and the irony in that was hardly something to laugh at. But once the door to her Accepted room was closed, it was what she did. She laughed and laughed a deep, heart-felt laugh.

She was free.

While still bound to the Tower, to Amadie, she was free. She was her own person, of her own Ajah. She answered only to one person and nothing else could ruin that. Damn them all, she was now Aes Sedai. A Red Aes Sedai.

[OOC: This may be incorrect, but if it's not making you happy, I can edit it once I get back from class. I'd figure you'd rather have a slight misconception over not having a post until after I get back from class today. <3]
Illyria Malkom
Despite the fact that Illyria had been privy to the possibility that Carra would not select an Ajah - or rather, make one up of her own - it left her slightly shocked that the Accepted would depart so far from tradition. The Amyrlin Seat herself remained poised; it had been Amadie that had told her that Carra might choose something so... Unconventional. However, the sisters that were there for the sake of ceremony all turned rigid as Carra chose her fate, clinging to their fringed shawls tightly, some tightening their lips into thin lines of disapproval and others left with their mouths slightly agape.

After what seemed an eternity, Amadie spoke, her voice as smooth as glass: "Then rise, sister." Unwilling to break from tradition like the newest Aes Sedai had, in spite of the shock that the Amyrlin Seat had just created a new Ajah by executive order, the sisters remained silent as stone. Carra rose to her feet wearily, and Illyria did not miss the relief shining in her eyes. Apparently, she mused, she is capable of emotion. Carra glanced around, not betraying any sort of nervousness or anxiety, but Illyria could not imagine how she could be calm at a time like this. The sisters lingered in the silence, unsure what to do - there was no shawl to give her nor was there as anyone to welcome her home.

They all stood locked in a standstill - each and every power-house of the Tower staring the newest sister down. Carra very suddenly cleared her throat, nodded towards the Amyrlin Seat, and calmly swept from the room, still dressed in the scratchy white wool of an initiate and without a shawl to adorn her shoulders to indicate the victory she had won. Illyria gave her a moment to rush ahead, pondering the peculiarity of the situation, and then quietly excused herself as the raising chamber exploded into chaos - Amadie's Keeper was busy banging her staff in a demand for silence, and the Amyrlin Seat was looking rather glassy-eyed in the aftermath.

The Mistress of Novices rushed down the endless stairs in a billow of lavender skirts and indigo fringe, she reached back to the decades ago that she had been raised to Aes Sedai herself and tried to recall what had been passed on to her. Ajah traditions, rules, secrets, along with rules of being an Aes Sedai in general. Just as she reached the bottom of the stairs, she had puzzled through what would be sufficient enough of an introduction to life as a full sister and the collaboration that would follow that pertained to the foundation of Carra's Ajah.

She arrived at the ground floor, straightened her skirts, and swept through the little doorway into the main entrance hall of the Grey Tower, taking care to lock the door with the Power behind her. It was certainly not obvious that this narrow door led to the highest room in the Tower, but nonetheless, caution was never wasted. In the early hours of the morning, the great chamber was lit only by pale torchlight, only dim enough to make out shifting shadows. However, Carra was doing enough shifting that it was not a difficult task to make her out in the darkness. Illyria hesitated, remembering how uneasy the woman had made her, but beckoned her anyway; as the Mistress of Novices, it was her duty to guide her pupils, and in the absence of an Ajah Head to do it, the task had fallen to her.

"Carraidhin," she called smoothly, electing to use her full name for the sake of ceremony, "You are not yet done for the night. You have much to learn and we have much to discuss."

The Mistress of Novice arrived at a bit of an inopportune time. The hour was very late and she was tired from having walked through the Stairs to gain the ... metaphorical Shawl. Not to mention the bearable tightness on her body from the oaths. That was something she wanted to address in private but it would seem that someone else had other plans for her. Carra wondered if it was of the woman's on initiative or if she was sent to punish Carra for breaking away from tradition.

A tradition Carra laughed at given that she stood in the Grey Tower that held an Indigo Ajah. Tradition was a false sense of security to these men and woman, and it was time they woke up. Carra wasn't willing to conform to their limitations even if she was still willing to serve. The mere fact that she was willing at all should make them happy. Especially now that they knew she had the talent of Foretell.

"Illyria." Carra said smoothly to the Mistress of Novices, as if she had never given the Aes Sedai title before. They were near equals, Illyria's position in the Tower did exceed her own, but they were both Aes Sedai now. "I suppose we have known each other long enough, you may call me Carra if you wish. I had hoped for some sleep before more conversation but if we must, I have some tea stashed away to help use through a conversation."

Illyria Malkom
"Illyria," Carraidhin said coolly, utterly expressionless and indecipherable, and the Mistress of Novices returned her stare levelly. Not many Aes Sedai had the right to address her so aloofly; not many sisters could wield as much of the Power as she could unaided, but the Indigo supposed that Carra was not at fault for what she could not possibly know. "I suppose we have known each other long enough," she continued, "You may call me Carra if you wish. I had hoped for some sleep before more conversation but if we must, I have some tea stashed away to help use through a conversation."

"We'll take tea in my office," she said, thinking that her parlor would not be the best place for conversation, "Do you have a favorite brew?" Carraid-... Carra might have done the unthinkable, but she still was Aes Sedai. And Aes Sedai were entitled to something more luxurious than the bitter black tea that the Novices drank. Carra gave her answer in that same measured tone, and Illyria nodded. That could certainly be arranged. She smiled thinly, meticulous in her effort to not betray her unease, and led the taller woman in silence.

They reached her office, and the simple Ward she had placed upon her door was sliced cleanly; though the Yellows warned that pregnancy would deter her ability to embrace and weave, it had yet to interfere. Candles sparked to life as the door swung open, casting long shadows in the sparsely furnished office, and held the door open for a moment, letting Carra pass, and then locked it behind her. She followed the newest sister quickly, letting her take a seat in the chair opposite of the desk, and took the tea set from where it rested on a deep shelf. Saidar filled the teapot, materializing into water, and was boiling only a moment later. Illyria turned back to the shelf, where little vials of loose leaf sat, labeled with her careful hand: the bitter brew was for novices, but every variety of tea from the Westlands was here to bribe the new arrivals with a taste of home.

She found the tea Carra had requested, and dumped its contents into the teapot. “Strong or weak brew, sister?” Carra answered tersely, and Illyria tipped the vial accordingly. It would need to steep for a good ten minutes. Until it was ready, she could begin with the basics. She took her seat fluidly, and folded her hands on the cold surface of her desk.

“What I am about to tell you is a collection of knowledge that is not shared with anyone that has not proved themselves worthy of the shawl. It is not to be shared, nor hinted at to anyone who has not ascended the Great Stair. First, as you have observed tonight, tradition is rarely broken, and there is always punishment for it. In fact, by all accounts, I should have left you to flounder. Tower tradition is as strong as law. There is more that bind Aes Sedai of all Ajahs than just the Three Oaths.”

“But before we begin, I can offer you a little Healing. I know how uncomfortable the Oath Rod leaves one. Would you like for me to ease it?” Carra was silent, staring coldly for a long minute, but Illyria did not relent. She returned her stare blankly, waiting for an answer.

“Yes,” Carra said flatly, and Illyria was silent. The necessary weave was constructed and then laid on her forehead. She seemed to be relieved as the Healing settled, but it was only for a fraction of an instant that her composure slipped; Illyria could not be sure that she had seen it at all.

“First: We are ranked by strength with the One Power. Should you wish to build your Ajah at all, and not be tossed from the Hall of Sitters, or sent to me for penance, you will submit to those who are stronger than you. Those who are weaker are required to submit to you. I doubt you will remember Rane,” Illyria mused, “Or that you let her know that she needed to stand up for herself after you served us tea, but that was an example of Tower hierarchy in action; she’s weaker than I, and so, she must serve. Depending upon the gap of strength between you and the sister in question, the greater or lesser the gap in rank is. Someone who is barely strong enough to be Aes Sedai, for example, would have to outright follow your orders. Someone who is only slightly weaker than you, however, would only have to politely listen to your suggestion, and could ignore it if she wished.”

The tea still steeped, and scent that rose with the steam was taunting, but she left it be for now: it wouldn’t taste any better than dishwater at this point. She waited silently for Carra to digest the first part of the lecture, outlining the rest of what was sure to be a lengthy evening in a linear fashion. Her first few years as Aes Sedai would be more difficult than her years as Accepted had ever been, especially considering that she did not have an Ajah to support her. Illyria was no substitution for a welcoming faction, but she felt bound to do what she could to make sure that Carra at least had a chance of swimming and would not sink outright.

Carra was going to move to help serve tea, as an Accepted would, but she recovered and gracefully took a seat in the chair meant for her, Illyria behind her desk. Carra watched her move and realized that over the past few months she had been so destracted by the ongoings of what was happening in the Grey Tower, and had not been sent to visit with Illyria, she had not noticed the baby bump. Carra knew nothing about babies and childbirth she she couldn't begin to guess how far along she was or if she should have known long before now. Keeping to herself she waited for Illyria to make the first move. This was unchartered waters for her and Carra wasn't exactly sure were to go next anyway.

"Strong." She did prefer strong tea, kaf was not something she cared for. But it was when she asked, Carra could not help but warm to her just a little. Sister. It was strange and Carra wasn't entirely sure if she trusted or liked Illyria but as only the M'Hael had called her sister in ceremony it was Illyria that accepted her as a peer. It... warmed her.

When Illyria offered her healing Carra thought on it for a moment. She had a certain appreciation for its tightness but it would ease her discomfort in her new rank to not have to work through the tightness of the Oaths. "Yes." Carra answered without emotion. So much had occurred that her emotions felt raw and the only thing left for her was her thick skin. Plunged into the cold of the healing, the tightness eased and with a deep breath Carra dared herself the relief before pulling everything back and locking it all down. A simple "Thank you." escaped her lips.

As Illyria started her explanation of how Aes Sedai Deference worked, Carra found herself more annoyed by this information than understanding it. It made sense and just by the skill she had achieved in the short years of training Carra knew that Illyria was a great deal stronger than her in the One Power. It had meant little to her as an Accepted, as it was her rank and position that Carra showed respect and not just a power she was born with. It also meant that Carra was of average strength, certainly strong by most standards but the Grey Tower was home to many of exceptional strength. That it was based on the strength of the One Power, Carra needed to ask.

"There is more to deference than the strength in the One Power. Age of an Aes Sedai and an Asha'man is hidden by the agelessness." And she knew full well how easy age was to hide. "There must be other forms of deference, like rank. What of the difference between Ajah's? Would not an Aes Sedai of similar Rank not order around another because they are not of the same Ajah? Or do they?" Carra pondered for a moment before asking the last. It was more then she would have delved for in any other situation but right now Carra needed information. As much of it as she could garnish. "What of Respect? Does not deference have another layer that shows respect?"

Illyria Malkom
"There is more to deference than the strength in the One Power.” Carra declared quietly, and Illyria felt more taken aback than anything else; it seemed that her long-ago suspicions of the novice in white held fast. The newest sister was already seeking loopholes and attempting to hide her ambition behind a thin veil of submission. “Age of an Aes Sedai and an Asha'man is hidden by the agelessness. There must be other forms of deference, like rank. What of the difference between Ajahs? Would not an Aes Sedai of similar rank not order around another because they are not of the same Ajah? Or do they?"

The Mistress of Novices bit back a sigh.

“What of respect?” Carra continued, “Does not deference have another layer that shows respect?"

Illyria paused for a moment, ignoring the the temptation to drum her fingers upon the desktop, and was only betrayed by a twitch of her index finger. “I will tell you all that I have learned from experience,” she said slowly, “But I ask that you heed my words. I do not wish to hold you back, not any more than I wish to see you fail. But you will fail, Carra, if you are not very careful and very pliant. This will not be comfortable for you, and I doubt that you did this in the name of comfort, but I don’t believe you understand just how much danger you are in.” She looked up from the spout of the teapot and turned her gaze to the red-haired Aes Sedai, who still looked as fresh as a spring flower. She’ll get eaten alive if doesn’t behave as the Hall thinks she should, she thought ruefully, and she may find that her hindquarters are served for breakfast in spite of her best efforts.

“I’m sure you’ve played your fair share of Daes Dae’mar,” she said quietly, still staring at her, “This is nothing like that. You are not an equal, vying for a higher rung on the ladder. You are no more than a child to the Hall, no more than a child to the M’Hael who raised you, and no more than a child to the rest of the Tower. You have no Ajah Head to hide behind, no Sitters to speak for you, no family to guide you. I will do what I can for you, but you must understand that I cannot provide for you like an Ajah could; I don’t even have a seat in the Hall, and if I did, it would be one vote out of twenty-eight.”

“As far as rank and deference goes, you are correct - age is not reliable. And as I’m sure you know, women cannot sense the strength of men any more than they can sense ours. My duties as Mistress of Novices don’t call for determining who to follow to or who to lead, but in my days as Keeper, a pattern was established. First, if you hold the same rank, you follow strength in the One Power. Should you be unable to decide with that, if you are dealing with a man, dealing with a sister of similar strength, or if you hold a different rank, it's a simple trickle of power from the top: Amyrlin, Keeper, Ajah Head, then Sitters, then Aes Sedai - mirrored with each male counterpart if you aren’t dealing with a sister. If it is still uncertain, you go with the length of time that they have been raised. Either they came before or after you.

“It is not uncommon for brothers and sisters of different Ajahs to attempt to herd one another around; though the Tower is presented as a unified front to novices and Accepted, you will find that the reality of the situation is much murkier.” They squabble like hens in a fox-ridden hen-house, she recalled with frustration, and wondered how to best prepare Carra for the unmitigated political maelstrom she would find herself in the middle of in the morning. “Why do you think the Amyrlin Seat is of all Ajahs and none? It is much less to show a unified front and more of a desperate attempt to keep everyone placated.”

“If you wish to keep your Ajah,” she continued softly, “You will need to grovel, while maintaining ground. You will need to beg for charity, while denying them the pleasure of looking down their noses at you. Appear too strong, and you will be shoved off into a different Ajah with a lifetime’s worth of penances. Appear too weak, and someone else will be given control of your Ajah, and the Hall will ensure that it is someone that you will be required to defer to. You must strike a balance, and likely, it will be a different balance for each sister, Sitter, and Ajah Head that you interact with." She paused, wishing for a moment that Carra had chosen White, Grey, or Blue - anything but Red. With that single syllable, the young woman had dug herself into a pit that was much deeper than any common ladder could reach. It's not at all guaranteed that she'll ever reach the surface again.

"Above all things," she continued, her tone softened with concern for the woman's future, "You must be receptive.”

Illyria was very clear in just how isolated and alone that she would be in the Grey Tower, choosing the Red Ajah. Not that Carra minded that aspect, she was unimpressed by the Tower's system of control and yet it's necessity meant that she too would have to earn her place; the hard way. Being Novice or being Accepted were surprisingly simple because in their routine there were expectations that had been written in stone for generations. Everyone knew who you were and what you were meant to do, the expectations were tangible.

Carra did not choose the Red Ajah for power. It would be very difficult for her to convey this to others, in fact Carra would bet good money that the Tower felt they had let a traitor into their midst and given them a home. She was not a gambler, Carra did not waste time or money on something that served no purpose but now that she would need to make her own Shawl she would need to find a way to keep the Hall from taking away the keys to her new home.

Before entering the Stairs Carra wasn't sure if the Grey Tower was her home. Even still it was something she could touch but it would be denied to her, an acceptance that Carra felt she needed even if there was no desire to want it. Alone, if she did not have to care who thought what she was then it would be simple, but with every word that Illyria spoke Carra was hammered into her little box in her little chair, dressed still in her Accepted dress, how very much she needed to be accepted in order to be who she felt that she was.

Carra was not pleased by this.

Freedom was fleeting, a veiled joke, and Carra just bound herself to the largest lie in the world. Now what was she going to do? There were only so many she could ask for help, but for now she would have to find some other way to live her life with the least amount of Tower bulling as possible. How.. how..

Carra tapped her ring on the arm of the chair, the only sign of her mind working as her stiff demeanor could not relax. There was nothing calming of this conversation and her frayed nerves kept her from allowing herself weakness. She dared not show weakness for it will be her undoing.

"There will be no if." Carra said, softly. The gentleness to her voice greatly contrasting to her demeanor was the only thing that showed of her fatigue. "I am Red Ajah, and if I can not be Red Ajah here then I will not be of any Ajah." The Pattern forced her into this, creator send, it damn well better help her keep it!

"What else must I know?"
