The morning started early. As usual Caddoc woke and went to his exorcises. An hour in the Yards as he worked with the sword, and then he was back. Moving back into his room, he cleaned himself before checking his uniform for any small threads or wrinkles, he slipped it on and carefully took the time to make sure every inch of the garment was immaculate. Looking down at himself, he straightened this, adjusted that, and then left the room. His feet led him from his rooms and along the more than familiar trek to the Infirmary, a trip he could have made in his sleep. Other than food and practice, he spent almost all his time here voluntarily… He even took some of his meals here when he could manage it. Waiting for him, as he knew he would be, was Gareth Asha’man. He bowed his head stiffly and gave a curt. “I am ready, Asha’man.” As a greeting. And then his day trailing the other began.
His first patient was simple. A young woman, first arriving to the Tower, was here for a physical before she signed the Novice book. Lifting her chart from the door, Caddoc was reaching for Saidin even as he walked inside. He seemed oblivious as he spoke to her. “Miss…Chandle? Yes, hold still please.” Spirit spun and wrapped itself around and around its own threads until that tight, almost opaque, net of Pure Spirit was readied in the air. He made this one large so that he could pass it through and around her entire form, searching for anything that might keep her from training right away. Sinking it into her, he began to take notes as he focused on his reading. “You seem in fine shape. Perhaps a little allergy problem, but herbs would do better for that than Healing. Take this.” Ripping off the paper, he handed it to her. “Collect these herbs before you leave the Infirmary. Brew them into a tea each morning before you start your day. And give this,” He handed her another note. “To the Mistress of Novices. You’re free to go.” With that he was already turning, slipping from the room.
Stepping out of the room, Caddoc following Gareth this time, moved into the next patient’s room. This was a young Drin’far’ji complaining of shoulder muscles. Waiting only long enough for Gareth to signal for him, he stepped up with the net already weaving itself into existence. As always, he did not use his hands to cast, and had one not known what to look for, they would have never known it was he that was doing the casting. The net sunk in and for a moment Caddoc studied the young man as the results flared to life under the Delving thread. “Were you working with Gaidin Thomlings?” He asked, and the Drin gave a nod. “Yesterday, before lights out.” The young man answered. It was Caddoc’s turn to nod. “Likely working on throws. He has strained your Deltoid and Trapezius muscles. Hold still.” Looking to Gareth, he made sure the Asha’man nodded for him to go ahead before he used the Healing weave he always used. All Elements sprang to life and wrapped around themselves before Caddoc settled them over the man’s shoulder. In seconds he was good to go, and Caddoc was sending him back to class after arranging for a meal for him.
The moment they stepped into the next patient’s room, Caddoc’s brows quirked up ever so slightly. Two Ji’alantar were in the room, one standing, the other sitting and holding her head over their trashcan. The smell of vomit was thick in the air. While the standing Ji told them that she had awoken to find her roommate vomiting and dizzy, Caddoc’s eyes stayed upon the other woman. From his place by the bed, he Delved into the Ji, watching closely. Then he pulled his Weaves away without attempting to Heal her. “She’s over indulged on drink.” He said finally. “She’s suffering from a minor case of alcohol poisoning. There is nothing dangerous, she will simply be ill until her system has purged it… She is also still very drunk.” In the end, the young woman was not Healed, and was sent to the Gaidin Captain.
The next patient was not one for him to Heal, but instead one for him to study. The young man, a Soldier, had recently come very close to death. A chance small wound gained during his training had gone unnoticed. After developing a staph infection, his fever had spiked and he had become delirious in a very, very short amount of time. He had been found near dead by the time anyone had come to look for him…it had all gone on for less than 24 hours. In the end it had taken a linked pair to remove the infection from his body in one go, and he had been here for the last three days, recovering his strength. Caddoc sat for the remainder of the morning with the young man. He did not speak much, but he did Delve him, learning how the body looked and felt after a major Healing, and searching for even the smallest of new flair ups. There were none, and after the study Caddoc was left to go to lunch….Which he chose to take in the Infirmary, sitting off to the side with his tray in his lap and a book on the study of the human body carefully held with Air floating in front of him as he ate.
After lunch it was straight back to work. His first patient was easy. A married couple, servants of the Tower, were there to see if their attempts at getting pregnant had worked yet. During this Caddoc did something rather curious. Knowing himself, and his limitations, he dutifully Delved the woman, carefully and perfectly, before reporting to Gareth that she was, indeed, with child. She was not yet far enough along to find out the gender, however, then the young man left the room. He knew he would never be able to fake the emotion that such an announcement deserved, and left the telling of it all to Gareth. When Gareth returned to him, Caddoc said. “I can do so when I am needed to. Delivering emotional news means nothing to me. However, why dampen their day when I do not have to?” And then he was moving on to the next case, which came in loud and sudden.
The doors to the Infirmary slammed open and a large group of Warder in Training came into the room. Two were carrying a third between them, and a fourth followed much more slowly. Behind them all was an old Gaidin, who seemed mad enough to release the Dark One. Caddoc moved into action without stopping to consult Gareth when he saw the blood dripping on the floor, and the fact that the Dedicated being carried was flopping about limply. “You,” He calmly but stonily to the two carrying. “In here, place him on the table. No, not on his face you buffoons. On his back, yes, like that. Now, are you injured?” He was unbuttoning his shirt sleeves as he spoke and rolling them up. The Dedicated’s eyes instantly went to his arms, so marred by scars that no inch of the original skin remained. He snapped his fingers beneath one’s nose. Snapping out of it, they quickly told the story. The two Dedicated, the dark haired on one the table and the blond one in the corner, had been training…with live steel. The training had become heated, and almost deadly. The blond had become angry and had slashed the darker haired Dedicated across the face. Incensed, he had responded in kind before passing out. Already the blond was in the corner of the room, being tended to by someone else. The Gaidin loomed over all. Caddoc nodded and sent the two other Dedicated away. Then he told the Gaidin to do the same… The man did not seem happy to be told to leave by another Dedicated. He seemed more than ready to lay the blame on all of Caddoc’s rank. However, Caddoc simply watched him coolly before turning his back on the angry man and moving to do his work. A Delving of the two figures revealed nothing more than cutting damage. It would have been scaring under other circumstances, and the black haired male had lost a lot of blood, but none of it was life threatening. An hour later Caddoc stepped out of the room, blood on his hands but not his uniform, the black haired male Healed by him, the blond by another. The black haired male was still unconscious, but now he was only sleeping. The other had been confined to his room.
After that, there were only two more patients before his shift ended. One was a Brown who was feeling unwell. Having researched her symptoms, she had ‘deduced’ that she was suffering from nothing more than a cold. To Caddoc’s annoyance, she was completely right. He had another Heal her while he saw to his last patient of the day.
This one was a young woman, a stable hand. In the midst of breaking a stallion, she had been thrown from the horse and trampled. She had shattered her arm in two places and broken three ribs. She was still awake, a miracle under the Light, and as Caddoc approached the bed she gazed at him coldly. Some reacted in such a way when in shock, but there was something in her gaze that he could have related to, and as he Delved her to find the breaks and shatters, they stared at each other. Caddoc decided he would let Jeremiah know about this one….In the end Gareth Healed the young woman. Stepping out of her room, Caddoc moved to fill out a little bit of paperwork before going back to his room. Usually, when he was able, he would stay late. Tonight, however, he doubted he would be allowed.
