Katrie
Full pink lips pursed thoughtfully as Katrie frowned at the two dress form stands in front of her, each of them clad in a spare set of pristine banded whites. She tugged at the cuffs and hems, trying to smooth out as many wrinkles from the blinding wool as she could. She had no earthly idea how either of the stands had been procured for her on such short notice, but she wasn't about to question it too closely. As the tall Cairhienin fussed, her thoughts wandered to the previous day.
Once she had explained properly why she wanted those two items, Liza Sedai had remained silent for so long that the pretty Cairheinin had begun to fidget. The Yellow's noncommittal reply was cold and Katrie was dismissed soon after. She figured that was that and couldn't help the annoyed disappointment that clung to her that only disappeared with sleep. The next morning, a summons came from the Infirmary – again – and when the Accepted arrived, it was to the news that what she had asked for was waiting for her in the Gardens.
The pleased grin still hadn't quite disappeared yet but she didn't care. There wasn't anyone around to see. Her motions were careful and deliberate as she pushed one of the stands into a shaded area, bringing the other one into a spot illuminated by direct sunlight. She was distracted for a moment, her eyes lifting to admire the cloudless pale blue sky. Blue... like his eyes... Katrie cupped her hand, feeling faint warmth against her skin. For a split second, she could see that her palm was filled with golden light. She smiled a little as her mind drifted to Dax. A sharp breath followed, and she forcefully reordered her thoughts, arm dropping to her side.
Concentrate. For long moments the Accepted simply studied the way the fabric fell against the dress stand. Her gaze followed the shimmer of faint golden light that reflected off the pristine white, watched how the subtle play of lighter shadows shifted into darker grey ones. She noted the way the sunlight brightened and enhanced the flirt of colours at cuff and hem, made them sharper... more vivid. Almond shaped eyes narrowed as a breeze gusted by, Katrie watching with fascination at the way the white wool, sunlight, and dappled shadows rippled.
She embraced saidar, every minute detail around her jumping into startling clarity. She spent another few minutes reviewing the things she had noticed, her expression meditative as she spun out flows of Air, weaving tiny hooks and tying off the flows. She placed them on the pristine white in evenly spaced intervals, nodding to herself every now and again. When the arrangement was to her satisfaction, Katrie once again separated out long flows of Air from the river of the Power, laying the threads on top of the fine wool fabric, using the small hooks as a way to anchor the forming weave to the dress. The faint yellow lines of saidar... didn't move in exactly the way she wanted it to, but the fine little hooks made it so that when the fabric shifted, so too did that particular portion of the weave.
The Cairhienin Accepted smiled, inordinately pleased with herself.
She tied off the lengthy flows of Air, tucking her hair behind her ears. Katrie studied the white wool, her lip curling slightly. Abruptly she found herself despising the plain blandness. She wanted to see colour. Fire and Water threads curled together, the fine mesh winding through the long flows of Air. A brief shudder, a jolt as two separate weaves tightened and merged together and suddenly, she was looking down at a section of rich purple. She gasped in delight, shifting her weight from foot to foot as she fought down the urge to wiggle her hips in pleasure. She bit down on her bottom lip, dark brown eyes bright with curiosity. How many other colours could she make?
Carefully, she let go of the Fire and Water threads, and the wonderful purple winked out to reveal the pristine wool underneath. Katrie made a little happy noise, even as she eyed the white with distaste. She grinned, the pretty Cairhienin picking out a colour at random and set herself to the task of recreating it.
