The Beginning of a Friendship (open)

It was a beautiful day, and for once in what seemed like ages, Kitty had some time off between classes that wasn't filled with chores. It was a rare occurrence, especially as she seemed to have a habit of gaining extra chores. Why were old habits so hard to let go of? And it wasn't even that old of an habit, she had only been at the Black Tower for a year. But it was also the irritating part of the rule. She could understand the rule when it came to the young, new novices, who hadn't learned restraint yet. But she knew how to channel safely, knew that she mustn't pull in too much of the sweet Power. She had seen one of the Soldiers at the Black Tower burn herself out, and it was horrifying seeing how empty the girl was afterwards. So she knew not to do that, and she had enough self restraint to not do it. So why couldn't she channel when she wished? It made a lot of tasks so much easier!

She had tried to explain it to the Mistress of Novices one of the times she's been caught and sent there, but it had fallen for deaf ears. Thinking of it, it might actually have only gained her a larger penance. She also remembered the promise she'd given that Brown Sister that first day, that she wouldn't do it again. But old habits die hard, they say, and that was true. And it made life so much simpler!

Beautiful day or not, it wasn't with the best mood that Kitty walked across the Tower Grounds. Steering her path through the Gardens helped; the lush green had a calming feeling on her. She didn't take time to stop, though, but continued through and arrived shortly after at the Warder Yards.

She wasn't the only novice there, she noticed as she got closer to the Training Yard. Several other white-clad girls, her own age or younger, stood in twos and threes, gawking at the trainees. Everything was as it used to be, in other words. Kitty didn't stop by or join any of the groups, instead she stood a little distance away and scanned the dusty ground for a familiar face.

She wasn't hard to spot, height on par with most of the boys and a head taller than most of the girls. The red curls that had gotten loose from her braid swung around in the air like a fireplace as the Aiel drin'far'ji spun around with her spear, sparring with a boy half a head smaller who fought with a sword and shield. She had a small shield strapped to her arm as well, a buckler Kitty thought it was called.

Kitty found herself leaning on the fence, watching the spar until it finished suddenly, the boy the victorious one. Kitty could almost see the steam coming off the Aiel in her defeat, but she was surprisingly civil about it, congratulating the boy on his victory before stepping away. Kitty followed her with her eyes, trying to get her attention before the girl walked off. When she was spotted, she waved gently and smiled as the Aiel came closer.

Kitty's hands moved in a silent greeting, and the Aiel's hands flashed in return. They exchanged a few handmoves and walked off together, heading towards the Gardens. They walked in silence, not speaking as they followed a path. Kitty spent the time thinking back to a week before, when she'd met Miendha.

Kitty had hoped to find an Aiel around willing to teach her more of their hand language, as she knew they had a well versed silent language. But she also knew that they were quite restrictive teaching that away to Wetlanders, as they called everyone on this side of the Spine. And she knew that they had at least two languages, one that men, or everyone knew, and one that the Maidens knew. The latter was supposed to be even more developed. And also the most secretive. Which is why that was what she'd aimed for.

Miendha had been surprised at first at Kitty's greeting. She had learned a little of the Aiel hand talk from an Aiel Soldier at the Black Tower, and she'd used what little she knew to introduce herself to the drin'far'ji. When the initial surprise had passed, Miendha had been more reserved and unwilling to teach her anything at first, and nothing more than the basic when Kitty was persistent. The girl had even been rude enough to not look in her direction, not listen to her when she tried to speak. Kitty found it childish and had slapped Miendha to get her attention. In a strange way, they had hit it off quite well after that.

The pair of girls, one short and blonde, the other tall and fiery-haired, reached a slightly secluded part of the Gardens, where the bushes formed a kind of alcove with a soft patch of grass in between. The two of them settled down on the ground, facing each other, and started talking of their day. Miendha corrected Kitty when she used the wrong signs, or used her old ones, which Miendha called clumsy childish babble. Kitty watched Miendha's moves, not only her hands but her whole body, picking up every detail of the language that she could.

Ubriel had just taken another beating and was feeling down and discouraged. She had meant to go to the stables and take Peach out for a ride and some quiet conversation. Peach always made her feel better. She was not paying attention to where she was going, head down and muttering to herself about the way she kept getting caught off guard. Suddenly there was a wall of bushes in front of her and she stopped short staring at leaves a few inches from her nose.

Turning around she realized she had no idea how she had gotten here and she wasn't alone. There were two other women sitting on the grass very quietly. Ubriel smiled in embarrasment and gave a small wave. "Um, so sorry to have intruded. I didn't mean to interrupt. I was just..." She trailed off and started slowly toward the opening in the bushes, glancing back at the women a couple of times.

For the untrained eye, it was hard to see that the two sitting on the grass, one clad in white and one in grey, were arguing. To be fair, it was hard even for the trained eye. Very little showed on their faces, maybe a slight frown on the Novice's face, and not a single word was uttered. Only thing showing was their hands flashing in rapid movement.

"I don't understand why not!" Kitty's brow furrowed slightly as she looked at the drin. "I asked you, and you said yes."

"No." Miendha's reply was short and rejective.

"But why?"

"The Maiden Hand talk is for a Maiden's hands and a Maiden's eyes only, and we are neither." The most infuriating part was Miendha's matter-of-factly way of putting things. And slightly berating, like she was a child.

"But you are a Maiden" Kitty signed back, still not letting it go that easy.

"Were. I'm not anymore, not after coming here." There was a sadness in Miendha's eyes that Kitty did not understand. Sadness and something else. Shame?

"So you decided to teach me to talk like a child, just because you left your people." The simple nod she got in response made her want to throw something at the Aiel, and she probably would've if she hadn't been distracted by the sound of someone approaching.

The stomping and the muttering gave warning long before the drin'far'ji stumbled into sight, and nearly walked straight into one of the bushes lining the clearing. Kitty exchanged a look with Miendha, hands flashing quickly. "One of yours?" she signed, referring to the similar set of clothes.

Kitty lifted her hand in a small greeting in response to the new girl's wave. "She looks lost," she signed to Miendha, while the other girl stammered an apology for interrupting them. Miendha simply nodded. "Well, ask her if she needs help."

"Why me?" the Aiel girl signed back, and Kitty just gave her a hard look, not really sure if she was joking or serious.

"Hey," Miendha said and rose from the ground in a fluid motion. "Are you lost?"

Smooth, Kitty thought and she got up on her feet too, although somewhat less gracious. She offered the new girl a friendly smile.

Ubriel blinked a few times as she turned back around to face the women again. Gesturing over her shoulder vaguely in the direction she had come from, she said, "I think I am on my way to being lost. I could have sworn there was a gate out to the stables ..." She trailed off biting her lower lip and glancing back at the path. She was gesturing minutely with one finger. Finally she lifted her eyebrows and sighed and shrugged all at once.

"You can't be lost if you decided you want to be wherever you are. Right?!" She wrapped her own chest with a closed fist and said, "I am Bree. I really didn't mean to interrupt you. However, since I am here now, it is nice to meet you."

"If you're heading for the stables, they're that way," Miendha said, pointing in quite a different direction than where the drin'far'ji had been going.

"I see you, Bree. I am Miendha of the Mosaada Goshien. May you find shade this day." Kitty moved her hands quickly at Miendha's side, hoping the taller girl noticed. "And this is Kitty," Miendha continued, picking up Kitty's cue, and nodding slightly in her direction.

"Ask her if she'd like to join us. It's a beautiful day, and if she's in no rush.." Kitty's hands flew quickly as she talked, but not as smoothly as she wished. She was still learning this Aiel hand talk after all, and it was quite different than the one she and her brother had created when she was little.

"Would you like to join us? If you're not in a hurry. Or we could show you the way to the stables, if you are." Miendha said in her usual calm, matter-of-factly way of speaking. "Strange creatures, horses. Isn't your legs good enough for you Wetlanders?" she added in signs. Kitty tried to hold a straight face, responding with a slight shrug. She didn't understand the Aiel and their aversion to horses. Why walk or run when you could ride instead? So much more comfortable and relaxing.

Ubriel noticed the flickering of their hands and putting that together with the obvious Aiel-ness of Miendha, she wondered if this was an example of the Aiel hand-talk that she had read about. While in the Stedding, preparing for her journey into the Waste, she had learned many things. Unfortunately, she had never had the opportunity to learn how much of it was true and how much embellishment by the writers. She decided not to mention it right away. It was best to observe before she ventured an incorrect guess.

"Well, I am not in a hurry really. I was only looking for a distraction from the poor outcome of my sparring session this morning. My horse usually cheers me up." she smiled and said, "It is very nice to meet you, and you seem like good company. What are you up to today?"

Kitty saw the small reaction the girl showed to her hand-talk, and was somewhat surprised. She was unused to anyone who did not know hand-talk to actually notice her movements. Yet this girl noticed. Did she know the language? Or had she maybe heard that such a thing existed, and was curious? There was also the possibility that she had only noticed Kitty doing something strange, and not recognized it as a language, so she left it be for the time, leaving it up to Bree to ask if she was curious.

"We were talking," Miendha replied to the girl's inquiry. "Please, join our shade," the Aiel continued with a small smile, her hand indicating to the patch of grass they'd recently occupied, where there actually was some shade from the surrounding trees.

"Tell me, Bree, how was your sparring poor?" Miendha said as she led them back to sit in the shade. Kitty sat down across from the other two, so they made a kind of triangle, and arranged her white skirts to avoid as much of green stain from the grass as she could. Laying her hands in her lap, she listened to the other two.

OOC: Feel free to write for Miendha if you wish. She's currently an NPC, possible future PSC, that I'm still working on fleshing out, so she's not set in stone yet.

Ubriel sat cross legged with the other two women and picked at a blade of grass at her knee. Looking from one to the other, she could feel the heat rising in her cheeks. "It wasn't that the sparring was all that bad. It was how it ended." She began to recount how she had been working through some basic quarterstaff exercises with a partner and accidentally landed a blow on his hand. "I broke two of his fingers and he had to go to the infirmary. So a ji'alantin wanted me to spar with him against his practice sword and shield. He was merciless. I've never gone up against a shield before at all and I don't know much more about fighting against swords." She told them about how her every move seemed to glance off of that wretched shield. "Then he moved in close and before I knew what was happening, he had whacked me a half dozen times before I was on my stomach in the dirt looking at my staff lying about three paces away. It was depressing."

All the while she had been talking, she had been using the very few gestures she had learned from the books in the Stedding. When saying she had broken her partner's fingers, she held her two fists together, thumb to thumb and made a motion like snapping a twig. She mimed holding a sword and shield and used one hand to represent a person standing on her other hand then made it fall over to show how she had been knocked down. She ended with a sign for frustration with her hands up close to her head.

"Anyway, I need to find something interesting to do to take my mind off of the severe bruising of my ego." She stopped and looked around, "You were talking, you said. I walked across the length of this alcove before that bush so kindly stopped me. I heard nothing." She smiled and asked, "Were you using hand signs?"

She really hoped they didn't mind that she asked. It had just occurred to her that Miendha had given her the perfect set-up for the question. She had found the little she had learned from the books to be very interesting and had wanted to learn more. "Is there any chance you would teach me?"

OOC: I don't really have a feel for her yet, but thanks. I might take you up on that later.

Kitty sat quietly and listened to Bree's story. She didn't know much yet of the training schedule in the Yards, but she remembered similar sparrings at the Black Tower, where they'd been required to learn some weaponry as well. She hadn't been very fond of that part, even though she did see the use, in a way.

But more than just listen to the story, Kitty also watched Bree's body language, and recognized the simple gestures the girl made. It fit in with her earlier observation, and increased her suspicion that this girl knew at least a little about hand-talk, if maybe not exactly a set language or special words. Then again, Kitty hadn't had a proper language so far either, having self-taught and co-learned her makeshift language with her brother. It was only this last week that she'd actually learned a proper language, she realized.

Miendha sat quiet in her spot and listened as well, a slight furrow between her brows. What that came from, Kitty had no idea. She didn't know the Aiel that well yet.

Kitty's suspicion was confirmed at Bree's question. She returned the girl's smile and nodded. "Yes, we talked." she signed, slower and more noticeable than she would have if she'd spoken to Miendha. She was about to agree to the second question when Miendha spoke, her hands flashing fast. The Aiel clearly did not approve.

"Why are you so eager to learn?" The fieryhaired girl met Kitty's eyes. "I should not have agreed to teach even you. It is not for Wetlander's eyes."

"It is a way, a possible.." Kitty stumbled slightly on the word, not having learned the correct sign yet, but Miendha picked up her meaning and corrected her. "Chance?" Thankfully, Kitty nodded quickly as she continued. " A chance for me to speak with more people. And I'm still learning, still talking like a child." She grimaced at Miendha at the last sign, part mocking and part annoyed at the fact that she was indeed taught a child's language, and not the proper one. Well, she would still convince Miendha to teach her the Maiden's talk one day. "Please."

Reluctantly, Miendha nodded. "You are stubborn for a Wetlander," she signed quickly to Kitty before turning to Bree.

"You may learn along with this stubborn Novice," she said, but her voice held a mirth in Kitty's ears. Kitty growled slightly at Miendha. "You make me sound like a beginner. I've spoken this way longer than you. It's not my fault you don't know MY language," the last she added in her old way of talking, her own personal language.

"Where do you wish to start, Bree?" Miendha said in both words and hands, spelling out the girl's name with one hand.

OOC: Take it where you want. We can do it detailed, or kind of skip forward a little, having them talk/learn off-screen sort of. I'm no expert in sign language, to be honest...

Bree smiled broadly and said, "Excellent! I have not really ever taught a language and never learned any other than common speech. I don't know how to really suggest to teach us. I suppose it might be easiest to just produce the signs at the same time we talk. That's how we all learned to talk to begin with, right?"

She enjoyed her time with the other two women and was saddened when she had to leave them to take a turn at polishing the armor in storage. They began meeting a few times a week during their free times. They were practicing the hand talk every time they spoke. Ubriel liked Kitty, she was interesting and unlike anyone she had ever met before.

During one of their meetings, Ubriel actually managed to convince Miendha to meet her horse, Peach. The three of them were sitting in a paddock, Ubriel brushing out Peach's coat and mane. "I understand that you trust your feet more than someone else's to get you where you want to go. The thing is that Peach has been my friend since she was a tiny colt. If she ever took me off in some direction I didn't particularly want to go, I have full faith that she would have a very good reason for it."

Miendha simply divided very flat looks between Kitty and Bree. She was not impressed, nor convinced. Finishing the brushing and turning Peach out to graze, Ubriel gathered all of the currying equipment and said, "I have been meaning to ask you, Miendha, would you help me learn some sparring techniques against a shield? I mean, I have been getting better, of course," she cleared her throat, "but I want to do better. I would like to actually win a spar or two."
