Writing music

Post by Sunny » November 18th, 2015, 10:40 pm

I thought it might be kind of cool to share the music we listen to while writing. :woo

Sooo...what do you listen to? Do your characters have theme songs?

That said, I'm making the thread so I don't forget to make it, but I will add links to my current favorites in a little bit. <_<

This song has always made me think of Miahala: "Who Wants to Live Forever" by Queen https://youtu.be/_Jtpf8N5IDE It really captures the melancholy of living forever when not everyone around you does.

Oh, and this is kinda Lysira's...although few people here may remember that when she first came to the Tower, she only went by "Mouse."

I really don't have much for 'writing music', per se. It just happens to be whatever comes up on the 'random' setting of my (admittedly large and mostly superfluous) music collection.

Hmm...I am a bit of a geek. I have eclectic tastes when it comes to music. I love electroswing, but find it hard to write to. I love Joan Jett, Heart, (dating myself) among others, but again find it hard to write to...

Lorenna McKennitt is gold for writing, but I often stream classical (baroque) or put on the soundtrack to Gladiator. >.>

Oh..and Lyndsey Stirling is also a favorite these days.

I'm sure there is more, but this is off the top of my head.

Lindsey Stirling is *awesome*.

Soundtracks are also great. I wish the LotR soundtrack weren't quite SO intense... :P

I write to a lot of different kinds of music, but most of it comes from an Enya-based Pandora station I've built up over the years. Lots of piano music, etc.

For Durent, a new song I recently heard by Of Monsters and Men, Thousand Eyes, has been fueling my vision of him lately. I first heard it on the Marvel's Jessica Jones trailer. A lot of the emotions and energy he shows is a mask. Such a long life of fighting and losing so many he's cared about have stripped him to the bone, emotionally, and he fights for the world now because that's all he knows to do anymore.

Thousand Eyes
Of Monsters and Men
Undo this storm
Undo this storm
Undo this storm
And wait

I can't control withering wonders
Flowers that lose their shape

I lie awake and watch it all
It feels like thousand eyes
I lie awake and watch it all
It feels like thousand eyes

I'll be the calm
I will be quiet
Stripped to the bone
I wait

No, I'll be a stone
I'll be the hunter
A tower that casts a shade

I lie awake and watch it all
It feels like thousand eyes
I lie awake and watch it all
It feels like thousand eyes
I lie awake and watch it all
It feels like thousand eyes

I am the storm
I am the storm
I am the storm
So wait

Yes to the Gladiator soundtrack, Loreena McKennitt, and Lindsey Stirling! Transcendence is usually my go to song to get myself into my writing headspace. Loreena's Dark Night of the Soul and Never-Ending Road (Amhrán Duit) are among my favourites, especially for setting mood. I also listen to Vivaldi's The Four Seasons to help get my writing groove on.

That's all I can think of off the top of my head right now. >.>

In general, I don't listen to music when I write but when I do, I like symphonic metal: Within Temptation is my favorite band and one of their songs inspired a book prologue. Others like them are good for my writing too.

And yes, Stirling is amazing.
