When Nykkolaia Sedai gestured toward her scars, it took all of Mirin’s self-control to prevent her mouth from dropping open and gasping in surprise. Her grey eyes widened slightly but she managed to keep silent. Oh, how desperately she wanted to know what had caused those scars!
A tone of purposeful certainty in the woman’s voice caught Mirin’s attention. She suddenly recalled her own emotions after passing through the test for Acceptance. The arches had been grueling, but Mirin had learned much about herself. Afterwards, she had felt filled with a sense of cold purpose. She would have stopped at nothing.
She sensed the same determination in the Blue sister.
Mirin stared after the Aes Sedai, barely able to refrain from running after the woman in curiosity. Perhaps some of the other Accepted would know more about the woman, or… no. Mirin shook her head. No, she needed to mind her own business. She had her own classes to teach and lessons to pursue. But Nykkolaia Sedai had given her much to think about. Mirin walked in the other direction, toward her next class. She forced her mind to move onto other thoughts.

Later that night as she brushed her hair and prepared for bed, she allowed herself to fantasize about becoming an Aes Sedai. She looked at herself in the mirror, imagining a shawl draped around her shoulders. Then abruptly, she smiled. Before, the fringe of her shawl had been an undefined part of her imagination – perhaps grey, or indigo.
But now, in her mind’s eye, she could see the color clearly. It was blue.
