The Changing of the Guard [Carra, Bella, Trent, Observers]

Post by Sunny » September 12th, 2015, 12:40 am

Gashes of red and purple bled across the western sky, remnants of a sun that had slipped below the horizon a few minutes before. The first stars had begun to appear in the darkening east, but Jaryd’s eyes did not see them, and his ears did not hear the bells that rang calling the learning ranks back indoors for the night. He leaned against the banister of the M’hael’s personal balcony, lost in the past.

He felt so much older than four years could possibly account for. The Oaths had done their work on his face, however, leaving it ageless and smooth. The twinkle of mirth in his eyes had faded as well, and the youthful smirk that had hidden in the corners of his lips had fled. When he looked in the mirror, he no longer recognized himself in the sober, determined man that gazed back.

What a time it had been. He and Carra had fought hard to break free and lead the Tower as it needed to be lead. Every meeting with the Hall had been a skirmish in a larger war, every movement and verbal exchange planned in advance for best effect. Their united front eventually drew sharp notice; the Hall made a noticeable effort to separate them, which they pointedly ignored. The bond certainly made countering those machinations that much easier.

Yes, they had worked hard. They had spent endless long nights researching, reviewing, discussing, planning, and –yes, arguing- over their next step. They each had their strengths, and together they had made progress. Together they shook the foundations of the Grey Tower, forced its sisters and brothers to re-evaluate their positions, and built a new future for its learning ranks.

And yet…even as they made progress with the Hall, their own discomfort with their positions grew. He could feel it in Carra when she looked at him across the Hall while the Sitters argued, her pale eyes as sharp as the corner of his mind she inhabited. He could feel it in himself, when he flexed his fingers against his teacup rather than lash out at the person lecturing him. Their true talents were lost in the offices they held; they had a greater purpose, and with every passing day, the call of that destiny grew stronger.

It wasn’t until a few months ago that it hit fever pitch. To his initial surprise Carra brought it up first, and they had railed against the restrictions that their positions placed on their duties as Reds. After that initial conversation, their planning took a different course than before, as they discussed when they would resign and how, what the Hall might do and how they could prepare for each possibility. Time had passed quickly as they laid the groundwork for their plans, until finally…finally, tonight it would all come to fruition.

Jaryd’s lips curved in a grim smile as he turned away from the lights of Hama Valon, and strode out of his office. In the corridor beyond, Carra met him with a face that betrayed nothing of her inner state. He took her arm, and they walked in silent lock step to the Hall of Sitters.

It was nearly time to reclaim their freedom.

OOC: I think Carra needs to post at least once, and I need to post once more (because I want to write my own resignation, man... :P), and then Trent and Bella can take'er away.

Carraidhin GlaisneImage For nearly ten years Carraidhin had worn the Amyrlin Stole. Reading through the histories of the Towers she knew that many have served even less than her and yet she had not even neared her 50th year of birth, both her and Jaryd served as children but it was clear that Carra had navigated the Hall a little easier than Jaryd. Her non-nonsense and firm hand guided as easily as it commanded, but she was by no means the strongest of Amyrlin's to serve in the Grey Tower. Amora still fresh in her mind. However, Carra could easily say she was not the weakest.

In the years the followed Jaryd's appointment, and even the time after their scramble out of the Tower, Carra didn't reflect too harshly on the bond between them. Emotions weren't unfamiliar to her, but it was clear to her that Jaryd was a man filled with passion in a near reflection to her stone. A calm that kept him at bay in a similar manner that his passion softened her. They made a strong pair and the Grey Tower grew stronger for their unity, but as Carra gazed out into the world with longing, and settled some evenings in the Red Ajah's Great Room she knew that things needed to change.

It was easier to maintain Power over fighting for it. The title of Amyrlin and M'Hael had allowed them a great deal of sway and power, but their responsibility to the Tower had aged them in a way that no oaths could. Jaryd's light grew dimmer and her own pessimism towards others had only grown. She treated their allies with great faith but even still she could not play favorites and did not. Not even 50 years of age and Carra was simply done. She ached to fight her own battles, to follow her own path, to follow up on a few of her personal foretelling without the ever watchful eye of the Hall of Sitters.

Leaving the room in a gown of grey silk and simple embroidery of reds and dark grey, the red curls braided and pinned back at the base of her neck with a few tendrils falling neatly over her shoulders. Illuminated by the Stole of the Amyrlin Seat, Carra's frame was slight but strong and carried a great deal more than her short Cairhien height. She caught the eye of Jaryd who was dressed in the classic Black of the M'hael. Both stately and a sight of strength. Even she could not deny that they were a strong dynamic couple. Something she avoided discussing during their tenure. Jaryd would no doubt push after tonight, but not sooner. She pushed away the thought as she could feel a familiar warmth through the bond. Somethings even eyes of stone could not hide, for even she could not deny that she did not have a fondness for him too.

Taking his arm, they glided into the Hall of Sitters as their respective Keepers gave them both summon and call. "They Come, The Come. The Flame and Fang of Hama Valon. The Amyrlin Seat and the M'Hael." It did not feel like a lie the way it had the first time, but even still Carra could not help but feel that for a last time it still was unreal. The two stately figures moved to their seats, but did not sit. They had called the Hall and so they held attention. Carraidhin was the first to speak.

"My Daughters. My Sons." The words were in Old Tongue, a language that she learned only for formal greetings and ritual but could not speak or otherwise read. Her station kept her too busy to pursue such studies. "For nearly 10 years I have served as your Amyrlin Seat. After the disappearance of the previous Amyrlin Seat, and then the very short tenure of the M'Hael after, I has served as the youngest Amyrlin Seat in the history of the Grey Tower. It is arguable that my appointment was to give control to the Hall of Sitters, which in my time of service I can not fault you." There was a slight quirk of a smile on her lips, although her eyes stone and her voice steady and strong. "I have not made this any easier than you have made it on me."

"According to the Tower Law, it is within my right to continue my service to the Grey Tower for the extend of my life so long as I carry Breath. But as it is not voluntary, after a time I have the option to step aside to give way to another to pursue the causes that were my own. For the past 10 years I have served and it is time that I step aside to serve the Grey Tower as the first Aes Sedai of the Red Ajah. As my final Action as Amyrlin Seat I will grant the Red Ajah a formal Seat in the Hall of Sitters, and with them the same number of Sitters as all other Ajahs. For if this Tower is to remain whole then we must come together. This I do Foretell." Her words strained against the Oaths but not one spoke as a lie. A secret for her and her alone.

She slipped her Amrylin Stole off her shoulders and folded it carefully, all 8 stripes shimmered in the light of the Hall of Sitters, and handed it to her Keeper of Chronicles. Virya Sedai gave a firm nod and accepted it until she could pass it on to the next. Carra stood unmoving, knowing Jaryd had his own words to say. She ignored the buzzing of words of the Sitters present. Carraidhin had long since learned how to tune it all out.

The void encased him in chill silence, separating him from the world as he and Carra walked to the Hall. Like two figures of stone, not people at all, he thought, as the great doors opened to admit them. Virya and Seth said their ceremonial words, the other Asha'man's eyes meeting Jaryd's for a brief moment before flickering away as he spoke. Jaryd could not think of a single instance he had enjoyed being in that chamber, and the prospect of finally being free bounced against the wall of the Oneness like a gnat on glass.

Carra spoke first. It seemed fitting. Since their meeting, she had always taken the lead. Would it remain that way now that the restrictions of rank would no longer apply? What would she do, if- he cut the thought off, instead focusing on her words. There were better times for such contemplations. His lips twitched up as she spoke of the Red Ajah. In order for there to be three Sitters, there would need to be three Reds, but at least the positions would exist to be filled. He kept his face carefully blank at her mention of foretelling; he could feel the strain in her mind, could tell she was pushing her definition of the truth to the absolute max. Not a true Foretelling then, only pragmatism and political awareness. He approved, within the Void.

After Virya took the stole, Jaryd lifted his head, pursing his lips as he chewed on the inside of his cheeks. He looked around the Hall, reading each face with studied care before speaking. "I am not so nimble with my words as Carra is, as you have all experienced, yet I have a few I would like to share.

"I, too, am the youngest to ever hold my position," he said, his voice uncharacteristically soft. "Unlike my partner, I have little regard for the political intrigues that come with leadership, and would not play by the rules of the game the Hall set me." She didn't move, but he felt a trickle of amusement in his mind.

"I truly believe in the necessity of balance," he continued. "There can be no light without shadow, no strength without weakness. When I was summoned to the Hall, I could not imagine what purpose me holding this position could serve; how could being M'hael possibly serve to maintain balance? However, it soon became apparent that the Tower was crumbling beneath teh weight of the past, and the Hall truly needed someone unfettered by traditional thought, someone willing to speak the hard truths no matter the cost and to push for change."

He glanced sideways at Carra for a moment. "I have filled that role for five years, and in that time I have seen the Tower break free from its shackles and flourish. Today, I am glad to say that I feel the scales have tipped. You no longer need one such as I, and it is finally time for me to leave you to your own devices." He carefully pulled the replica ring from his hand, and held it out. Seth took it.

"I have no further declarations to make, no visions for the future," he said, with a nod to Carra in acknowledgment of her words. "My only desire at this time is to reclaim my place as an Asha'man of the Red Ajah, and focus on my neglected personal affairs for a time. It has been an honor to serve." He bowed formally, then fell still. What else was there to say or do?

Someone was knocking on her door.

Miahala hadn't been much of a deep sleeper since, well, being resurrected. It didn't take much knocking for her to be roused, and since she knew that knocks on the door in the middle of the night usually meant nothing good, she surged to her feet. Wearing her nightshift, she hurried to open the door and found a steward of the Tower standing there.

"What is it?" she asked, her usual composure in place but her voice pressing the urgency she felt as she stared at the man. Although he was older, for a non-channeler, he still looked shaken by her sudden and hurried appearance. What, really, could he have expected when he knocked on someone's door well into the night hours?

"The Hall of Sitters requires your presence, Miahala Sedai." He bowed his head to her, gathering his own composure once again. "If you would care to prepare yourself, I will escort you."

That drew her dark brows down on her face, just a bit. What in the world could the Hall of Sitters want with her? She no longer served in the Hall, so they had no call to require her presence... She almost wished that she had been told that Trollocs were descending upon the place and her presence was required on the battlements. She preferred things to be straightforward.

"Just a moment," she said simply and shut the door.

She was a low maintenance woman, so it didn't take long for her to change into a dress. Most of those she owned were of the same style and hues, after all. She pulled on her indoor shoes, then brushed her hair and braided it. The threads of grey were just barely this side of noticeable now, but were indeed noticeable. She took a look at her porcelain visage in the mirror and deemed herself presentable.

Opening the door again, she slipped out and said nothing to the steward. He said nothing to her. They walked to the Hall and she was escorted right up to the doors before he said, "Please wait here." And vanished. Not used to being handled quite like this, she was more than a little perturbed. She glanced around and saw another steward leading...

"Durent," she greeted with a slight bow of her head as this second steward asked her fellow Green to wait, and also vanished. She peered at him with a faint frown in her eyes. "Do you have any idea what we're doing here?" she asked, pitching her voice low. "We haven't broken any Tower laws recently that we don't of, have we?"

Despite the late hour, Durent hadn't been sleeping when the knocking had come at his door. He was sitting at his desk reviewing various letters and reports from his currently-rebuilding network of eyes-n-ears. He had loosened the collar of his Asha'man's shirt. A floating, tied-off orb provided light for his reading so as not to waste any candles.

He sighed as he finished reading another report. Nothing was progressing as quickly as he needed. He knew he was missing something. Things were happening around him that were affecting him and those he cared about, and he was starting to feel like a puppet dancing on strings. A thought he was not thrilled about. He rubbed at his eyes tiredly and look at the stack of reports remaining, considering calling it a night. Just as he was about to release the light weave, a knock sounded at his door. Puzzled, he turned to stare at the door as if it would give him answers. He walked over and opened the door slightly, seeing a young servant. "Yes?"

"Durent Asha'man, sir, you are summoned by the Hall of Sitters." Durent kept his face an emotionless mask, but his puzzlement continued. At this hour? What could they possibly want with... Oh. It dawned on him. If his suspicions were correct, he was being summoned for something very specific that he'd done twice before.

All of his self-control and years of training notwithstanding, a frustrated grimace appeared on his face. Seeing the fear it put on the servant, he wiped it from his face and gave a dismissive gesture. "Very well, let's be off," he said as he buttoned up his uniform and straightened it, using a few small threads of Air, Fire and Water to ease out some of the wrinkles.

Durent followed the servant silently as they wound their way out of the Green Ajah quarters towards the Hall. When they arrived at the doors of the Hall he saw a familiar face. Miahala Sedai waited there. This gave him a small amount of pause, and made him reconsider his theory a little. He looked around to see that they were alone before answering her question. "I don't believe we've broken any laws, no. I have a theory, but I'm not sure. I don't know that either of us will be terribly excited about it... but the Wheel weaves as it will..."

"A theory?" Mia asked curiously, feeling almost annoyed that he would speak so vaguely with her; that he would speak to her in the allusions and oblique words that either of them would use with other people, but she dampened it down within her mind. She was simply on edge because she had been dragged from her rooms in the middle of the night to the door of the Hall...

What could his theory be? Her strategic mind, her Green mind, rushed headlong into the possibilities. If they had broken no laws, then what could it...

The thought dawned on her but she dashed it away. It couldn't be.

Miahala had walked this world for over a century and a half, and most of those years had been within these Tower walls. She had been friends, near sisters, with many a woman Raised to the Stole, but never had it even been whispered to come near her. After all, she was always better serving the Tower to be out in the world; fighting the Shadow on its own ground. She had watched many an Aes Sedai far younger than she ascend...

That couldn't be it.

In her mind's eye, she saw the game board and the pieces upon it. A green piece embedded in her hand, and pieces of nine colors arrayed before her...

"By the Light," she whispered to herself, too softly to be heard even by her own ears.

Before she could say anything more, speak of her thoughts to Durent or recall any more of that Dream or even start kicking and screaming, the great wooden doors of the Hall of Sitters opened from within. The light fell upon her face as she peered past the stewards that had opened them, seeing the Hall assembled before her. Many a time had she been among that crowd, but never here. Never standing here, like this, with them before her like that.

The Wheel Weaves as the Wheel Wills.

Miahala had never backed down from a battle, not upon a bloody field or within the fractured dimensions of her own mind. She would not back down now. With one more look at Durent, firm purpose strengthened her gaze. She straightened her spine and held her head high, walking side by side with her Brother before the Hall of Sitters.

And so it was that Miahala Sha'hal Machera Jolstraer Ives; eldest daughter of Doran and Miashala Sha'hal; proud child of Saldea and the noble combatants against the Blight Border; Aes Sedai of the Green Ajah and daughter of the Grey Tower...like the women who were not just her Sisters, but her sisters before her--Harmony, Joaynna, Lelianna...became the Sixteenth Amyrlin Seat.

And yet even as she endured the ceremony, she knew within the depths of her stalwart spirit that she would not be Amyrlin Seat like those she had best known before her. She was not like Lelianna, or Joaynna. She was no Amora. She would do this as she had walked all the paths of her life. On her own terms. In her own ways. And yet she knew she would lead the Tower well. She would take care of the Grey Tower like it was her child, as she always had.

Jerid sat silently in his seat. Lysira stood nearby, hidden but at the ready.

The First Seeker was dressed in traditional black, with the Indgio cord adorned over his right shoulder. His two long knives rested at either hip, a jade ring adorning the same finger as a simple gold wedding band.

In the crowd of Sitters and Ajah Heads, he was but one person among dozens. He was older than most, but his silence made him nearly invisible. Since his appointment to First Seeker, Jerid rarely spoke unless it was an important matter.

It was a trait he was well known for as an Asha'man, an Officer or a member of the Hall.

So when it came for his time as recommendation of whom should succeed as Amyrlin and M'Hael, he was the last to speak.

It was no secret that Jerid Walker served Amora en'Damier over any who served as M'Hael. His loyalties always lie with that office whilst he was with the Tower. It was also no secret that Jerid watched out over the en'Damier line, mostly due to his friendship to Amora and Liana.

One he considered a dear friend, the other ... a sister or daughter.

Some things changed. And so to did Jerid's role. He was the oldest in the Hall, or so he knew. At more than 150 years old, the youthful First Seeker stood after the initial words were spoken to call support for the new candidates.

"I, Jerid Walker Asha'man, First Seeker of the Indigo Ajah, stand in support of Durent Antai Asha'man for M'Hael and Miahala Sha’ha Machera Jolstraer Ives for Amyrlin Seat. Life for life, soul for soul, I would name them so," Jerid said plainly, his Spirit-enhanced voice booming across the Hall.

Jerid knew Durent, capable of slipping away. And knew Miahala, who has no Amora. They would be difficult, hard to keep track of, and probably dangers to their own safety.

And not for the first time, Jerid spoke out of ceremonial context in the ceremony. As one of the oldest, he was allowed the right.

"Are you ready, willing and able to serve? If so, approach and be deemed willing."
Jerid Walker Asha'man
"We all suffer. It's how we move past it that defines us."
