Jerid's lips twisted in a bittersweet smile at Lysira's silent words. In so many ways, both had secrets they had kept hidden from the world, both rarely revealed to others.

Sadly, some secrets could condemn them both to exile, or worse, execution by the Hall of Sitters.

After all, some of the darker secrets often outweighed the good deeds committed for the Tower's protection. Both were soldiers and knew the risks associated with such revelations.

He kissed Lysira again, briefly, before whispering, “And I yours, until our Patterns our rewoven, and our son and home will be safe until that time comes.”

Slowly he disentangled himself from Lysria and took a deep breath. The column of Spirit formed before snapping into a thin vertical line. It was a simple matter, boring the hole through the Pattern, albeit much more difficult than normal.

The gateway snapped open and their own quarters appeared, in the area marked for Traveling. Jerid waited for five heartbeats as Lysira crossed the threshhold, well aware of dual sensation of the bond. She was both mere steps and hundreds of leagues away. When the signal was given, he stepped through and the gateway closed and the bond snapped back into one complete sensation.

And he collapsed to his knees. His grip on saidin became tighter even as female form drew closer.

Zae Sedai and Balen Asha'man were waiting in the main room, waiting for Sojin Majere, when Lysira and Jerid returned.

“Creator's bones in a bloody sheep's cloth,” Balen swore upon seeing the Indigo.

Zae, her blue-green eyes filled with concern, looked at the disheveled Warder for even the slightest form of consent. Then she moved forward, saidar filling her to the brim. She was strong but not near as Jerid Walker.

Jerid felt himself being probed, even if he couldn't see or feel the delving weave. His vision was blurred but the only thing he knew was keeping hold of the One Power was necessary. It was instinct.

He saw Zae's eyes widen and then look at Balen.

“Summon a Yellow, the strongest you can find. If you have to hog-tie Gareth Asha'man or raise Aden Cole from the dead, do it. By all flaming means, dig up the Healer M'Hael's dead corpse if it can still channel a worth a lick.” she commanded. Jerid knew that tone. The wounds were serious, beyond Zae's ability to Heal safely. “Summon the girl as well. We will need her strength.”

Balen hesitated a heart beat and Zae had none of it. “Now!”

The Grey Asha'man was out the door. Zae's eyes were on Lysira. “Gaidar, your help please. Keep him up and steady. Saidin is the only thing keeping him alert, but he's been poisoned and it's one I cannot purge.”

Jerid could only barely register the words, but he understood poison. He smiled faintly.

And felt a stinging slap across his face as Zae's hand connected with flesh.

The Indigo Aes Sedai looked at the Gaidar and murmured, “Pain is the only other solution right now. The next one comes from you.”

Balen was back in the room, a tall redheaded Novice at his side, standing in front of Jerid. Her eyes were the Indigo Asha'man, strange, gold-green orbs … and a sight almost too familiar but just beyond misery.

His body began feel like it was on fire then and he began shuddering.

“The Yellow is on his way ...” was the last coherent words Jerid heard as Balen spoke.

Gareth Tomason Asha'man When an urgent call with not-so-subtle undertones of come now or else came upon a Yellow, they didn't waste any time. Of course, the threat was hardly necessary. Gareth Tomason had felt a strong calling when he'd come to the Grey Tower, and it had been straight into the Yellow Ajah's halls. When someone said, "you're needed," he went.

He finished quickly with the patient he'd been with, whose situation wasn't too dire, and then grabbed a bag with medicinal supplies and hurried out after the summons.

The serenity of the channeler be damned when someone needed healing. Although he did not look harried but for the running, run he did because he was told that's just how urgent it was. One might have been shocked to see someone of his bulk moving so quickly as he did, but he kept a good speed from the infirmary and to the quarters of the Indigo Asha'man Jerid Walker.

Bursting into the room, his pale eyes swiftly took in the surroundings. He vaguely recognized the Aes Sedai and still-standing Asha'man, and he had met Lysira Gaidar on sparse occasion though not since his return to the Tower. Her recognized Jerid Walker, but didn't know the Novice at all. He said nothing and only nodded to them before hurrying to Jerid's side.

Gareth grasped Saidin with ferocity, wrestling it swiftly into submission. Although he was not necessarily the most powerful in the One Power in brute strength, he was among the most talented and most experienced healers in the Tower. The weave of Spirit was constructed with barely a cognitive thought, the fine mesh of threads sinking down into the Indigo's body.

"What have you been up to," Gareth murmured as he felt the wounds and the poison. Something...powerful. It was already flooding his system, adding venom to his veins. As he had lost his share of blood, that made it all the easier for his body to be infiltrated.

The Yellow's focus was wholly on his patient, so intent that it might have taken no less than the Tower exploding around him to draw his attention away. Once he had quickly scoured every corner of the older channeler's body, he released the Spirit and then began pulling all five powers together like a fine tapestry. Five-power healing could not be done by many, but it was what was necessary here.

As it was not sickness, it was not the Absolving Weave to drain the power but simply powerful Healing. He took a slow but deep breath and then basically pushed his will into his patient. The strength of it combined with his skill in Healing and brought all five powers pushing through the veins, wrestling the poison for who would have dominance. It was not easy, but Gareth's focus was precision.

He cleared the poison. There was a hint of fatigue from the struggle, but he pushed on to knit together the severed muscles and nerves that had been torn by what was some sort of blade. The skin was the last to knit before he let out a heavy breath and rocked back on his heels.

"Rest," he said, inhaling slowly again as he lifted his gaze to the Gaidar sitting beside the other man with a perfectly placid face, but the touch of someone closer than a friend. He addressed Lysira. "Rest and plenty of fluids. He needs to recover his blood volume." As he said that, he told the others in the rooms as those who were witness to the moment.

Bryn Sevia Riverstone Walker Bryn hadn't been two seconds out of her history lessons when a mousy, brown-haired Accepted promptly snatched her up and pulled her through the halls.

The Novice squeaked, her gold-green eyes indignant at the sudden and unceremoniously move.

But she didn't dare resist. She was a runaway and already had enough chores to last her a century unless she behaved.

She was dressed much as always for the last several weeks: a basic Novice dress that fit appropriately. At a few inches short of six feet, it was easy to tell she was of Aiel descent with a few exceptions. Her fire-red hair was done up in ringlets, her bearing more of the Westlands. Her gold-flecked forest green eyes held a stubbornness and quick, keen sense of observation.

As the Accepted led her toward the Indigo Hall, the older woman silenced her before a word could be uttered from her full lips.

“When Balen Asha'man sends a summons, there are no questions, you just go,” the unnamed Accepted said. Light, but Bryn knew this one would be a Green.

But what would a Grey Asha'man be doing in the Indigo Hall? Her heart beat faster, wondering if the moment had come to finally meet one person.

No, it was probably some flaming Indigo who wanted to test her.

The next several moments were a whirlwind that she barely observed. She was thrust through a massive wooden door, and immediately grabbed by a broad-shouldered handsome giant of a man before being sat in front of Zae Sedai.

Bryn saw her lips move but briefly before her eyes latched on to the man in front of him, around which so many people seemed to be gathered rather protectively.

And she swore a litany of curses that could make a Seafolk captain blanch.

It was him. Light, but he hadn't changed, not in all the years she had seen that face in her dreams.

But now he was seriously wounded, his bandages full of blood and on his knees, stubbornly clinging to the mortal coil.

“Novice Bryn Riverstone, you will embrace saidar or I will have your hide for my saddle.” The sharp words woke Bryn from her daze and she reacted instinctively by letting saidar flood her. And she took a step toward the wounded Asha'man.

An iron grip stopped her. Zae had clamped onto her shoulder and she dared not move lest she lose the arm.

Bryn noticed the quick glance toward the Gaidar at the wounded Asha'man's side, and saw the tightened grip on the sword at the small woman's side.

Before the Novice could speak or make demands, another Asha'man, this one a tall, handsome Saldaeaen, entered and promptly took control of the situtation.

And Bryn watched in fascination as the Yellow Asha'man went to work. She recalled the days leading up to her arrival at the Tower. It had all started when she had touched a Whitecloak and a fresh scar on his face vanished. The rest of that day had been a flaming disaster.

The Indigo Asha'man shook, his teeth gritted and Bryn again attempted to step forward. Zae Sedai's iron grip kept her in place. Light, but how could a fair woman possess such strength?

Then the wounds were gone, and the Asha'man seemed to breath easier, albeit still shallow.

The command to rest came and the Indigo slumped, suddenly unconscious. Bryn watched as the Gaidar supported him and Balen Asha'man suddenly help move him to the sofa.

Bryn felt the pressure leave her shoulder as Zae stood, nodding at the Yellow Asha'man's request. Who were these people to the Indigo? Or the Yellow for that matter?

“Thank you, Brother Gareth,” Zae said politely. “Aden Asha'man spoke well of you before his death in the Caralain. He said you achieved great skill under the Healer M'Hael as well. He also said it did him proud to see one student teach another and to have instructed two fine healers.”

Bryn blinked. Was there a sour note in the Indigo Aes Sedai's voice at the mention of the Healer M'Hael?

It was quickly stored away when the Novice heard Zae next. “Accepted!” The Accepted who had “escorted” Bryn popped her head in the door. “Find Sojin Majere Gaidin and bring him to my apartments. Do the same Galen Asha'man and Selyn and Lyiona Sedai. And you are not to utter a word of what you might have seen to anyone.”

Bryn blinked. Summons for three channelers, all of them Greens with numerous Warders, was a tall order, especially from an Indigo.

Zae Sedai turned to the Yellow and murmured, “Brother Jerid is to not channel for a few days. I doubt he even could, but that should be a restriction nonetheless.” Her eyes went to the Gaidar. “Dear Sister of Battle, I will submit myself to your judgment for the insult against your Ward, but first I must grill his son on information and mount a flaming hunt. I'll be burned if this attack against the First Seeker goes unpunished.”

Bryn almost smiled. The Aes Sedai didn't know a thing, but she acted if she had all the answers.

The impulse to smile vanished at the woman's next words.

“Novice, you will accompany me out and ..”

“No.” The words escaped Bryn's mouth before she realized it. Oh, flaming Light. She was doomed to scrub floors for the rest of her life. But the damage was done, she might as well follow through.

In for a penny, in for a Golden Lion, she thought.

“I will not leave my father,” she blurted out. Her gold-green eyes flared defiantly. The cat was out of the bag. “I dreamed he had been dying for all my life without meeting him and I'll be burned if I let the Leafblighter claims him before I have a chance to know him!”

Zae's face remained emotionless as she observed the Novice, then looked at the other three in the room.

“Gaidar, Asha'men, I will leave this matter to you,” she said simply. “Should Lysira Gaidar wish to have her removed, Brother Balen, please see the Novice to her quarters and held there until the Mistress of Novices can see to her. If she resists, have her clapped in irons.”

Bryn saw Balen blink in surprise.

Flaming bloody ashes, Bryn thought. She knew she had blown what good relations she had with the Aes Sedai out the window.

But her eyes latched on to the man on sofa. Her da. The man who had filled her dreams and prompted to run away from the Tower. A man she so had wanted to meet for as long as she could recall.

She scanned all three faces and latched on to one she hoped could sympathize the most: the Gaidar.

Well, I didn't see that one coming...

At least, Lysira hadn't until she'd seen the girl's eyes. That was all it had taken for the diminutive Gaidar to know who she was, in the broad strokes of the matter, but she couldn't afford to give it too much attention at the first. She had her husband's head on her lap, holding him still while the big Yellow Asha'man got swiftly to work. He didn't talk much, and she appreciated that. Her dark eyes watched keenly and drowned out her surroundings any more than necessary.

Her own clothing was still covered in blood and gore, but she didn't much care about that right then either. All that matter was getting Jerid Healed, because she didn't care to be a widow and a broken warder this day.

Things got even more interesting after that, however, as they seem to so often do. The others were going to clear the room, but the girl wouldn't go. That alone was all Lysira needed to know the truth of it, and without the vocal declaration that came along. The Gaidar suffered the knee-jerk reaction to send her out, because her concern was for Jerid and making sure he rested. But meeting those eyes, the mother in her rose up as well. Not a lot, she didn't know this girl, but enough...

'She may stay,' she signed, hoping someone would translate for her. 'Only if she lets him get the rest he now needs to heal. She interferes with that, and I'll tear her apart myself.' Her face was absolutely impassive, but anyone looking at her would know that she was not exaggerating.

A wave of relief passed through Bryn as she saw the remaining people relax slightly around the Gaidar as her hands moved.

And then her eyes narrowed slightly, and she shifted as if ready to defend herself.

“The only thing yer tearing apart would be me clothes, Lady Gaidar, and only after several drinks,” she blurted out in outrage, her native accent betraying itself. Bryn's face reddened as she clamped her hands over her mouth. Light, but she had worked so hard to try and control those outbursts over the years.

Balen raised an eyebrow and leaned close to Lysira. His words were for her ears only. “She is very much Jerid Walker's daughter, though I doubt he knows she exists. Until he has fully recovered, perhaps the less interaction the better.”

Balen paused before adding, "If you will excuse me, I will need to watch attend watch for my nephew, your son. Sojin might have arranged for four Tower Guardsmen to watch over Cade in his absence, but I will not risk any chances while I breathe."

He pulled away and gave a nod of respect before leaving, albeit with a sharp and silent warning to the Novice.

Her face still red, Bryn worked up the courage to speak. She curtseyed slightly and murmured, “My apologies, Gaidar. I meant no disrespect and I thank you for allowing me to stay. I only meant you'd only be able to tear my clothes off before getting to flesh … err … blood and flaming ashes, I meant you wouldn't be able to be on top of me without a fight ….”

Her face heated even more and, promptly clamping her jaw shut, located a nearby chair and planted her rear in it as she looked at her father. Subconsciously she pulled the amethyst pendent she had hidden under her dress out and fingered it. The stone was embedded in a simple silver fox frame.

It was her mother's, or so her grandda had told said. She clutched it now fiercely as she looked at the man in bloodied clothes. He was as she seen her in dreams, not aged a day. Slim, handsome, defiant to the last.

But he was alive. How? He should have burned, like her dreams foretold.

Her eyes flittered to the Warder who kept a close eye on him.

“Lysira Walker Gaidar, the Warder known as Mouse,” she murmured, reacting on memory. “Hero of the Battle of Lights, she who Warded and Wedded Jerid Walker Asha'man, first of his name, Master of Soldiers and High Seat to House Walker, Andor's Buffer.”

The Warder should be older, and not here. She was a woman barely out of her thirties. How was that possible?

“Jerid Walker Asha'man, first of his name, Hero of the Battle of the Lights, High Seat to House Walker, once Master of Soldiers, Keeper of Archives and Third Sitter for the Indigo Ajah, and now First Seeker. He who is known to the Seanchan as the Golden Eyed Demon, the Shadow Storm, Grimstone. First children: twins Angel and Beric Cuelain-Walker by Aynaiss Daisuldra Cuelaen Gaidin; second children, twins Sojin and Solin Majere; third children, Caden Walker, by Lysira Walker Gaidar, named after the Master of Arms, Caden Ives, and Lucan by Caiteri al'Cardyn Sedai ...”

Bryn broke from her trance, again blushing. “I'm sorry, Gaidar. History and facts … they come up in problematic times … it's the only fallback when there's not a woman or man around to pull away for a romp ...”

She blushed deeper and fell quiet. Light curse her for remembering every word she read, especially when it came to the knowledge she had learned about her father from the Tower's books of heraldry.

After a moment, she whispered, “What is he like, my brother, Caden? Would I ever be allowed to talk with him?”

The questions popped out of their own accord and for a reason. She had no other family. Riverstone. It was a bastard's name, given to children in parts of Ghealdan.

Bryn bore that name because her mother, an Aiel, died in childbirth in Cosamelle without breathing much information than was necessary to Bryn's foster grandfather. For whatever reason, the man had kept her existence a secret from Lord Walker, and she had grown up both an object scorned and one of hatred simply because she was half-Aiel.

When the man with the slurred speech and raven tattoo killed her grandda, whatever family she had vanished.

She looked at the sleeping Indgio Asha'man and whispered, “What is he like? Legend says he was the butcherer of thousands and the hero who helped defeat the Whitecloak Dreadlord, the Light's champion cursed to walk in Shadows, the Amyrlin Seat's chosen … “ She paused.

“Is he a good man?” she asked quietly after a moment.

Bryn had raised her legs into the chair and now hugged them tightly as tears rolled down her cheeks. For the first time in very long while she felt like she was twelve, just waking up from a nightmare.

And for once, she had doubts as to who her father truly represented. Her eyes flickered back to the Gaidar, or rather her hands.

“Could he ever accept me as his daughter?”

Being around the girl was like standing upon a ship at sea while the waves threw themselves violently over the wood. Not that Lysira had experienced this for herself, but she'd heard stories and it made sense here. She was like a partially exposed nerve, words and emotions just flowing from her and sloshing around the room. Lysira remained impassive on the outside, letting the girl ramble and splutter her way through the moment.

Everyone underestimated Lysira, the Gaidar thought wryly. The girl was obviously troubled, however, so she didn't say anything. Her raw emotions and what those emotions were did not, however, get past her. And even if she would guard Jerid like a wild-cat, she was not a cold stone. She kept her place, holding Jerid's head upon her lap, but watched the Novice as she spoke with a faint tilt to her head. Her lips frowned slightly, thoughtfully, with the knit of her brow.

'You can understand me, right?' she signed at first, moving her hands slowly and letting the gentle question be the first thing she said, almost as if trying to reassure a frightened animal; an area she had some experience in.

Deep inside, Bryn scolded herself for her actions. She had been on her own for a decade after leaving the Tower, and two years before that.

Yet she was sobbing like she was twelve.

For the first time in her life, however, she faced both her deepest desire and nightmare. Before her was her father, hoping for semblance of a normal first encounter.

Instead, he was wounded, unconscious and protected by a gorgeous, veracious Gaidar.

And then that very woman flickered her hands. Bryn inclined her head.

"I understand every word you say, Gaidar," she murmured. "My adopted grandfather taught me everything my mother taught him and then whatever he learned after. I could correct an Aiel Maiden's grammar if I desired."

Some part of her found the strength to stop crying and her gold-green eyes gained a hint of steel.

"Keep me from knowing my father and you won't get a chance to tear me apart," she said sternly. "You'd be hogtied and naked in the top of the stables if you try."

Yet she still ... Slowly she stood and closed within a few feet of the pair, her eyes switching between the Asha'man and his Warder.

"Are the legends true? Is he a good man?" she asked. "Would you know what is like to search for your father for years only to find something else waiting for you, or worse, something more?"

Lysira's dark eyes flashed in her impassive expression as she listened to the girl. It was the only sign of what was going on inside her head, and she didn't reply for several long moments. She felt some pity for the other woman, but the attitude that went with it grated on the diminutive Gaidar as well. She'd already had a rough enough day and didn't need to be dealing with this. Maybe she should've had the channelers take her with them...

'I would stop threatening me, girl,' she said when she finally lifted her hands away from Jerid's face. 'I have known terrors far worse than you and stating what you would do to me if I tried to keep you away from my bondmate and husband is not the way to make your case. I know too well what you speak of. I spent years alone in the trees, completely alone, thinking both of my parents were dead and doing what I could to survive. I was little better than a feral animal when the Tower took me in.'

She stopped and looked down at Jerid, gently stroking his unconscious cheek as he still lay, his head secured on her knees. The feral in her had never really gone that far away, had it? Her mind thought back to the house and the woods, the feeling of the blood with its smell and the taste of the spatter she licked off her lips... She inhaled slowly and signed without looking up.

'I have no intention of keeping you from your father. But stop thinking you can concern me because you are a channeler, even a powerful one. You do yourself no kindness in the eyes of me, or your father.' Now she looked up. 'And yes. Your father is a good man.'

Bryn had the dignity to blush slightly, realizing her behavior wasn't the setting the best first impression.

She was always one to let her emotions speak for her when her mind was wrapped up in so many different conundrums of its own.

Bryn found herself in trouble more times than she could count because of that trait...or some delightfully pleasantly scenarios for that matter.

"My apologies, Gaidar," she murmured.

Not that the Novice wouldn't carry out her promise to strip the Gaidar and leave her hanging from the rafters. A wicked thought sparked in her mind, one that lasted but briefly but left her inwardly embarrassed.

Light help her some times.

Instead Bryn "listened" to Lysira Gaidar, the diminutive woman's slender hands flashed.

Bryn felt some relief flood through her. He was a good man. Her body relaxed and she took another step toward the blood-covered pair.

He is a good man.

She had heard such wonderful rumors about her father, and read so many accounts of the man over her childhood and life as a young adult. But there were also the nightmares that came with the legend.

And there were her own nightmares, the same one that had occurred over much of her childhood. One that had stopped suddenly 10 years ago, as if if had come true.

Only, it didn't. Or at least not in the way that had been portrayed since she was a girl.

She was brave and touched the Asha'man's shoulder.

And her gold-green eyes fell on the Gaidar. Light, but the love that shone in the woman's black eyes for the man was something otherworldly. Bridget had known that love only a few times in her live and only very briefly.

She herself appeared to fall in love more easily than most and then disappear before it grew too serious.

It was time to stop running.

"With your leave, I'll leave you two so that he can rest," Bryn murmured. "I will seek him out in a few days when he is recovered."

She turned slowly, but paused, looking briefly at Lysira.

"Begging your pardon, Lysira Gaidar," she said bluntly, "but my comment on the stripping naked part wasn't a threat." She smiled shyly. "Part of me wonders what is under the clothes and wouldn't mind further exploration."

And then she left. As she closed the door behind her, she clutched the pendent around her neck. How many times had her grandfather told her of her Aiel mother? How many questions had been left unanswered?

She had a few days to figure those questions out. And then hold her father to task for answers.

By the time the door had shut, Lysira wasn't sure she rightly knew what to make of the Novice so clearly attached to her husband. The Gaidar knew in a life so long, and so full and complex, as Jerid's had been... Well, she didn't let much surprise her anymore, or bother her. At least, in terms of that. The girl's attitude had bothered her, but Lysira did remember her own early days and feelings about her family.

It seems like a lifetime ago, she reflected. And truly, it was. It was Cade's lifetime ago, since all that had come to pass before he had even been born. She had been blessed to have her family alive and present at her wedding to Jerid.

She looked down at his still sleeping face and knew what a mess they both were, but she was determined that she would not move from this spot until he awoke again. However, a bath was called for shortly thereafter... As she watched him, softly stroking her fingertips over his cheekbone and jaw, she wondered if she should tell him about the girl. He had a right to know and she didn't like secrets, but was it her place to tell him before she could tell him herself?

Then again, she had not exactly kept herself hidden before the others...so perhaps it was not a question of that. But there was also so much more to discuss, like what had happened before, during the fight. Though was that something that could be solved by their conversation now, or would that be in more time? So many questions and so few answers.

Lysira inhaled deeply and exhaled slowly, watching Jerid's face while she waited for him to wake.
