The moonlight gave a soft glow through the glass windows of the hallway. Even at this hour, various denizens of the tower still scurried through the hallway, darting to and fro, motivated by some task or another and determined to see that task to some sort of conclusion. Very few of these night owls seemed to take notice of the group of initiates on their knees scrubbing the floors and tidying up the wall decorations.
Daven Marnail, with black sleeves rolled up and some sweat on his brow, sat up from his kneeled position and back onto his knees. He dropped the damp cloth into a nearby bucket and exhaled. The Andoran youth was no stranger to chores, even though it had been several years since he had to actively perform them, but this had all come as an unexpected and not necessarily wanted surprise.
He wiped his brow and looked around at his peers as they continued scrubbing away at the floor, each pursuing their cleaning with varying levels of motivation, and quietly sighed. This new life was a shock, but it did not appear to be changing anytime soon. The son of a wealthy merchant was no different than an orphan in the Grey Tower, and punishment came swiftly to both who shirked their duties. Daven had already earned harsh words from a Dedicated earlier in the day for supposedly ‘twiddling his thumbs’ and was not in the mood to be called a child again.
Just as young Marnail was about to end his respite, he was approached by a figure who was at first unclear to him. Worried that it was some mad man or woman of rank, Daven quickly kneeled, grabbed his cloth from the wooden bucket, and began to profusely scrub a spot of grime he imagined seeing. Daven’s mind envisioned the figure looming menacingly overhead.
The new recruit’s tension rose as he anticipated a tongue lashing from some sort of higher up or another, when he really had no way of knowing who had approached.
