Bastian watched as Beron practiced the under-handed swings, and then as the other Drin incorporated the shaft of the axe into his rotation of swings. “You have the mind of a soldier. Not many who pick up an axe think about using the haft to stun or injure their targets. You’ll notice many battle axes will have a metal end-cap. Those end caps are as much for decoration as they are for inflicting more damage when you strike someone with them,” the large Drin explained.
He pulled his axe out of the practice dummy and inspected the edge of the blade. It was only a practice axe, but his father taught him long ago to keep an eye on the edge of his weapons, “You’ve got the basics down. We don’t have much in the way of forms. It’s more about knowing how to transition from one swing to another. I use the middle of the haft to block or parry a blow, which is easier to do if you’re working with just one axe.
“Because I usually wield two, parrying is a little more complex, but not impossible,” he added. “I think, though, I’ve given you enough to work on. Why don’t we take a bit of time and practice what you’ve learned so far,” he suggested.
