Out of Practice [Silas]

Rhiale
Rhiale could not rightly describe how much she loved being able to wear pants.

The Mistress of Novices had burned her cadin’sor upon her arrival. Technically, she shouldn’t have even been wearing that; Wise Ones did not wear working clothes. But Wise Ones did not usually leave the Three-Fold Land, either. But, when she made it clear that it was a matter of toh, she had been able to leave without feeling too much guilt. She owed Lorraine first. She wished she had been able to bring back her body to her beloved Grey Tower, but the journey was too long. Perhaps if it had been Tar Valon, it would have worked. But Hama Valon? So far west that it was practically a foreign planet.

But she did what she was told, dutifully, and lived as a novice. She did her chores, took her lessons – that was something that she had placed special emphasis upon. Lorriane had once mentioned something about being brown, and that browns collected knowledge – Rhiale had little choice but to honor that. Truly, some it was fascinating. She had a particular fondness for history and culture. But… It was nothing like home, and she could feel herself becoming soft. She cleaned, and she cleaned a lot, but that did nothing to maintain the sharpness of her mind.

It hadn’t taken any convincing once it had been relayed to her that she would be permitted to change out of novice whites if she wanted to work in the Warder Yards in her “free” time. She’d put on the soft grey clothing, laced up her boots with practiced hands, and devoted the day to cleansing her mind. She would not worry about chores, or Aes Sedai, or books, or written work – all that mattered was the gravel that crunched beneath her boots and the spear in her grasp.

They’d called it a polearm, and she’d sworn the Armory Keeper’s eyes had bulged out of his skull when she asked for him to cut it in half. She’d had to bully him into it, but he had done it, muttering something about how Mistress Bryne would have his hide. But she was pleased, nonetheless, and she’d even found a decent buckler.

“Decent enough,” she muttered. It was not of the quality she expected, but she could not particularly blame them for their ignorance. There were plenty of weapons she’d never seen before. At any rate, she was told that only a few people worked with polearms – and the best would likely be the Captain-General, as anyone else was too busy to spar short-notice. She’d only stared blankly when they recited his name to her – and then had been kind enough to contact him in her stead.

She assumed that he would arrive in the Yards whenever he had the time. For now, she was satisfied with her own company; she had already stretched every muscle until it burned comfortably and run herself ragged around the courtyard. Rhiale now was working through stances and strikes with a straw dummy. She felt foolish, striking an unanimated opponent; it was very outmatched, even by someone that was in as poor practice as she, but everyone else was doing it... Things were done very strangely here. Wouldn’t they learn their stances better if practiced on each other? And surely, the bonus of agility and fear-factor of getting nicked by a blade would have done them good, too. She shook her head. Rhiale had no interest in reforming Wetlanders. She merely wanted to pay her dues and leave.

Her shortspear smacked the dummy with a dull thud. She frowned. Her wrist was very out of practice; the spear had wavered, and though struck true, it was without strength. It had been a very long time since she had done this. He’ll tear me to shreds, she thought flatly. Perhaps that will do something for my poor skill.

Herarn took advantage of the time that the Grey Tower Soldiers called 'Training Time'. It was a joke really. The Soldiers were allowed to pursue whatever course of training they saw fit. Most either took the time to play around, stare moonfaced at Novice's who were foolish enough to be out on the Warder Yard doing nothing but oggle the Warder Trainees. Only he and most of the Black Tower Trainees took this time seriously. He was currently running around the Warder Yards with an oxen yoke over his shoulders, his hands holding it steady by resting on the hitch rings.

He could see Addric practicing his unarmed combat against a stone training dummy that he had been able to raise with flows of Earth. Finishing his last lap around the Yards, he saw a woman with what looked like a proper Aiel spear. The head was a bit poorly weighted for its size which told him that it should have been on a longer haft. When she struck the dummy he winced. It appeared that she noticed something was wrong as well.

Approaching with the yoke across his shoulders, he said, “I see you. I am Herarn, Soldier of the Bla... of the Grey Tower. Formerly of the Nakai Clan, Black Cliffs Sept. Formerly Duadhe Mahdi’in. It appears that it has been some time since you have held a spear. Would you care to spar? Perhaps facing live steel might bring back memories of a... better time?”

“I will understand if you have other engagements. I will, of course, leave you to your own training time if you wish.”

Herarn tossed the yoke to the ground and straightened to his full height and stretched. The white shirt he normally wore under his black uniform coat was thoroughly soaked with sweat. His neck and what was exposed of his shoulders was a deep red from the weight of the yoke. Given his size, he had to be careful to maintain an acceptable balance of strength, flexibility, and speed. Today he was working on his strength.

Over the sound of practice and training, somehow piercing even over the din of sparring between the Warder hopefuls, the sound of whistling could be heard. The tune was lazy, meandering, the melody made up on the spot as the whistler passed through the Yards. The melody was irrelevant, however- it was more the fact that the person whistling was present at all. A number of trainees heard the sound and suddenly decided they had business elsewhere that promptly needed their attention before scurrying off. Even some of the higher ranked trainees felt a shiver go down their spines as they remembered their own ministrations at the hands of the man who now strolled his way through the Yards.

Silas Malkom had to admit that it was somewhat entertaining to embrace his reputation as some sort of dreaded presence on the Warder Yards, much to his peers' chagrin. The Captain, as they seemed to solely refer to him as now, had a reputation of being absolutely brutal in his training sessions, holding nothing back. Those who came unprepared were crushed. And even those who were braced for his teachings generally failed to walk away unscathed. Those who managed to survive repeated lessons found their skills expanding at a rapid pace, but that too was irrelevant next to what Silas ultimately represented- anyone who tangled with the Captain got hurt. And he would always do it with a smile.

Silas wondered what his own teacher would have thought, regarding the reputation he had garnered on his master's former grounds. He had an internal wince as he remembered his own harsh lessons at the hands of the Reaper of the Yards, and decided that Master Ives might find his predicament amusing. As much as that man could have been amused by anything, anyway.

He cut short his tune as he finally arrived at the training area where his latest... was it tasteless to refer to them as a victim? Anyway, there she was, an Aiel slip of a girl who'd gained some rust down here in the Wetlands. Silas had been roped into shaking some of that rust off. His eye passed from his student to the fiercely sweating individual that was addressing her. He quirked an eyebrow at what the Soldier apparently thought passed for training, and cranked said eyebrow even higher as he listened to the boy's speech.

Well... it's not as though he knew that I was coming here. I honestly can't say if the girl knows I'm coming, anyway. But I digress. Silas put on his most winning smile as he walked past the Soldier toward the rack of quarterstaffs.

"Trying to steal my students away, Soldier?" he joked, before grabbing a quarterstaff and turning toward the student in question. "Sorry for being late. Rhiale, isn't it? Pleasure to meet you. My name is Silas Malkom, and I will be your instructor for today." He noted the weapon held in her hand. This would be an interesting challenge- he hadn't had to train someone with Aiel spears before.

Concentrate on teaching her mobility, as well as the proper leverage to get the most out of her strikes with a shorter weapon. Not so different from an ashandarei, actually. He twirled the weapon a few times before slapping it into his other palm, a feral smile beginning to spread across his features.

"Are you prepared?"
