Welcome to the Gardens: one of the most tranquil areas of the Tower Grounds. Birds sing in the trees which line the wide paths between beautiful flower beds and serene lakes. There are benches to sit and listen to the waterfall, and there is neatly trimmed grass to lie on and rest. Novices and Soldiers as well as Warders in Training can be seen, sweeping the stone paths as Accepted and Dedicated study from books and relax under leafy trees.

The Thing about Green [Attn: Avyra]

Johan
“Rowan!”

Johan winced and kept on walking, his gaze set determinedly forward, refusing to so much as glance behind him. If he didn’t look, they didn’t exist, and if he pretended that he hadn’t heard, maybe, just maybe they’d give up and decide that it was all too much hassle, because, light! At least they could have tried and got his name right. He hadn’t known he resembled a tree.

It was quickly proving to be one of those days where he should have stayed in bed. It had started out well enough; he had managed not to make a complete ass of himself in the Training Yard, and had pulled some moves that could almost have been deemed ‘graceful,’ but then, of course, because fate was never, ever kind, things had swiftly gone downhill from there. There had been the usual gaggle of Accepted – all future Greens in the making, no doubt -, and one of his fellow Drin had made a bet, he’d accepted, and that was basically how he had ended up here in the Gardens fleeing for his life. She’d been a pretty Andoran. She’d grabbed his arm, pulled him close, told him she was looking forward to getting to know him, and that she was going to be going for the Shawl soon. He’d babbled something about needing to meet someone, and had then ran.

And now here he was.

He kept on walking, his pace quickening with each step, desperation behind every stride. He was nowhere near to becoming a Warder, but there were some who liked to check out the potential offering early on. Not happening. Definitely not happening to him.

The moment he came across someone – a small, tiny looking Accepted-, he stopped, for once forgoing his manners.

“Pretend that you know me," he said, glancing quickly behind him. His voice was tense. "I’ll pay you.”

Not that he had any money to his name. Maybe he could offer some cake. Cake usually worked.

Avyra
Avyra was on her way to the mews, head lowered. Although it was technically dinner, she didn't feel like eating. She just wanted to be with her birds.

Nothing was working for her. Her studies were suffering; Elia seemed to he right, she would never progress to the Shawl.

That shouldn't have been a suprise. Nobody would ever want her as an Aes Sedai. It still shocked her that there were people who wanted to be her friend. Light, that people even noticed her. She was so easy to forget.

She didn't want to be forgotten. She wanted to be noticed. To have some fame. To achieve something. To not be seen as a child.

Of course, that was always too much to ask.

Suddenly, someone came up beside her, a Drin, far taller than she but not nearly as tall as most of the other Drin. He looked tense, and his voice sounded like it. He kept looking behind himself.

"What are you talking about?" It was hard to keep from scoffing and walking away. "Of course I know you! Why would I have to act; that's silly." Avyra paused, looking over her shoulder. It didn't look like anyone was following him.

Johan
For half a heartbeat, Johan was about to say that they’d never actually met and that she must be mistaken, but then he realised that the girl was playing along. He released a breath that he hadn’t realised that he’d been holding. A grin tugged at his lips as he contemplated what this all meant. No having to escort some Accepted hell-bent on signing him up as a few future Warder to lunch. He visibly relaxed, and he turned behind once again to see that the Accepted had given up and was heading back to the Training Yard.

“Thanks,” he said, fully turning his attention back to the girl in front of him. She really was small. Often he felt dwarfed by those around him – all those who’d grown up knowing when their next meal would be - but not now. Cairhienin, if he had to take a guess.

Realising that he must have been staring, he quickly looked away and he pushed a hand through his hair; a trait he always found himself doing whenever he felt nervous. “You definitely saved me there. I owe you one. I was worried I was going to find myself suddenly leashed to an Aes Sedai.” He shot her a grin. “I haven’t even been here a month.”

Ah. The Accepted really were vultures. Avyra couldn't help but smile slightly; this man was so innocent.

“You definitely saved me there. I owe you one. I was worried I was going to find myself suddenly leashed to an Aes Sedai.” He grinned down at her. “I haven’t even been here a month.”

Avyra rolled her eyes. "No need to thank me. Nobody should have to put up with them." She shrugged, continuing on her way. Maybe he'd follow.

"I'm Avyra, so I guess you can say we've now officially met. Who are you?" She had never seen him before, so it was obvious that he was very new. Seemed nice enough, however, with a lively grin on his face. She wanted to see how long that would last.

Johan
Johan winced as he suddenly realised the stupidity of his words. No one should have to put up with them. He was talking to one of them, talking to someone who would likely end up an Aes Sedai, and he’d acted – was acting - for all the world as if they were the worst thing ever. He winced again, wondering if he should apologise. He found himself hastening after her.

“I’m… I’m sorry. I really didn’t mean to… to…” He didn’t know how to finish the sentence, and so he let fall, and for the third time in less than three minutes he winced again.

“My name’s Johan...”

Avyra looked back at him. "No offense taken. I understand what you mean. I know how bad the Accepted can be."

She didn't seem to mind him following her, and she didn't tell him otherwise. In truth, she would have liked being alone, but being in company wasn't so bad. Often times it helped.

"Besides being chased by a bunch of rogue Accepted," she said with a smile. "How have you liked your training so far? Learn anything interesting?"

The were nearing a rather big, not exactly stunning, building with boarded sides and no real windows. She opened the door to it, holding it open for him. The inside was nicer, a few benches to the side and a lot of supplies on the wall. Gloves, leashes, and a few other leather products.

Johan
What he had set out to do had been accomplished, so Johan didn’t really know why he didn’t simply excuse himself and go back to what he had been doing before. Maybe it was the thought of ending up face-down in the dirt again, or maybe he was simple rebelling. He didn’t particularly know. All he did know was, that besides not being used to being beaten all the time, he also wasn’t used to having such routine and structure in his life, and there were times where he simply just wanted to walk off and be done with all. Even for a few hours, So why not now? Why wait? He ignored the fact that he wasn’t expected back for another half an hour anyway.

He stopped, though, when he saw what was inside the building, forgetting the question that she asked him. Leashes, gloves…

He turned to look at the Accepted with a raised eyebrow. “Dare I ask where we are? I’ve never been here before, and, well…” He waved vaguely at the things on the wall. “That doesn’t look like the sort of stuff you would use for gardening.”

Avyra chuckled, but didn't reply. She moved over to another door, one with a small wire window, and looked inside.

"Good evening, Tempest! I promise I'll take you out hunting tomorrow my dear." There was a flutter of wings, and a big, white falcon landed on a perch below the window, peeking out at them both. She tilted her head and watched them both with dark eyes.

Avyra moved on, peeking into the cage beside the falcon. "Hello Kyella! How are you today?" She opened the cage, slipping inside as she pulled the glove onto her hand.

A small command of "step up" was heard, and Avyra emerged with a golden eagle teathered to her arm, standing on her glove. She watched Johan with golden eyes but made no move to attack.

Avyra sat down on one of the benches, motioning for Johan to sit beside her. "Keep to my right, the side without the bird. Slowly; don't startle her." She paused. "I must say, this is better than gardening."

Johan
Johan didn’t move. Instead, he just stood staring, unable to take his eyes off the bird that was suddenly in front of him. He’d never seen a bird quite so big, and he had definitely never seen anything with such a big beak and claws. The only birds he had ever really seen where the pigeons that plagued the Rahad, and they were nothing in comparison to… to this.

He wasn’t sure quite how he managed not to take a step backwards, because everything was telling him that that was what he should do. The bird – he didn’t know, what, exactly it was - looked like it could snap Avyra’s arm in an instant if it wanted to, and he wondered just what was stopping it. Light! He had to also wonder how she was managing to hold it. It didn’t exactly look what you would call light.

Finally, he tore his gaze away from the beak –not easily, mind, because he was having images of it cracking his bones – and looked back at the girl.

“They do know you keep them here, right? I’ve not suddenly been drawn into some deep, dark plot where you’re planning to take over the Tower with birds of prey, I hope?”

He always joked when he was nervous. It was one of the ways he had learnt to defend himself: don’t let them know you’re weak.

Avyra laughed, rolling her eyes as she looked to Kyella. "You're nuts if you think I can take this place with only a golden eagle, gyrfalcon, and an Andorian kestrel. Besides, these birds aren't exactly violent. She wouldn't hurt anyone unless they were being stupid around her."

The eagle watched him with bright gold eyes, then seemed to lose interest, looking down at the glove. She picked at her jesses for a moment, clicked her beak at Avyra, tilting her head, then puffed up her entire body, giving her feathers a big shake before letting them fall flat again.

Avyra could tell he was nervous around this bird; who wouldn't be? "Come, sit. Just don't touch or sit to my left; she won't like you being behind her. Her name's Kyella." She paused. "Actually, if you want to go find her a ball of moss... I should have one where the supplies are. She likes to play fetch."
