The Merchants (Attn: Kenneth)

Sabine ni Hayadan t'Masin
A large map of western Andor was stretched over the length of a table, with an ornately-hilted dagger holding it flat at one end, and a couple of books weighing down the other. It showed the lands between the Mountains of Mist and the River Arinelle. The map had to be rather old, as it depicted neither Hama Valon nor the Grey Tower, both conspicuously absent from near the shores of Lake Somal. What it lacked in modern details, it made up for in topography and lost settlements.

With the immaculate hand of someone accustom to writing in large financial ledgers, Sabine ni Hayadan t'Masin marked down the names of the settlements she did not recognise from the map. In painstaking detail, she also made notes on how to find these settlements, based on the distances and directions from different landmarks. It was tiresome and tedious. It would have been considerably more efficient to remove the map from the Library, if not for the fact that the Browns would have had a field day producing more and more penances for the Saldaean to endure. That and a sense of propriety. Sabine had never stolen in her life, and she was not about to start now, map or no map. She knew the cost of a good map, and she also knew the rebuke of a scorned Aes Sedai. Even without her morals, that would be have been enough reason not to consider it. The last punishment she had received was not an experience the Lady Masin wished to revisit ever again. It was disgraceful enough to remember how she had howled in pain, with snotty tears running down her face.

The pen had run dry. She returned it to the inkwell, drawing up the dark fluid that matched her eye and hair colour. These lists of names and locations would serve her well in the future. An Aielman, Terric of the Salt Flats Sept of the Nakai Aiel, had tried to convince her that she had to make do with the life she was living, not the life she wanted. Ideas of escaping the Grey Tower had not abandoned her completely, but even if she had to wait until the shawl of an Aes Sedai was sitting around her shoulders, Sabine intended on visiting each and every one of these lost places in search of the Horn of Valere. She was a noblewoman first, a Hunter of the Horn second, and an Aes Sedai third, if ever.

A long shadow cast itself over the map, and Sabine looked up away from her notetaking at the source of this intrusion. Dressed in the crisp black of the Asha'man, the dark-skinned man had the sword of a Dedicated on his collar. He stood at about the same height as her, with hair just as dark as her own. His face was also soft, like her own, making the goatee seem oddly placed on his chin. He failed to remind her of anyone she knew, even in a passing sense. Who was this curious stranger?

"You are in my light," she said observantly, without the usual haughtiness she would have admonished someone else with. Even with the superior rank to her own, she was not about to give airs and graces to a mere Dedicated, but this one looked less smug and superior to the others. "Can I help you?" There was a chance he was simply turned around, and the sooner he departed, the sooner she could continue with her notes.

Taesh
Taesh had just come from one of his favorite lectures, one that was on cultural awareness and competencies. Sense coming to the Tower, years ago in a bargain struck between his parents and an Asha'man of the Brown Ajah, the Atha'an Miere had taken quite a liking to learning about the various nations of the world and their people. Today's lecture, given by a well traveled Blue sister, had introduced the Dedicated to several places he had never heard of. So after the class the Dedicated was in the arena of the Browns, the Library of the Tower, searching for those unknown places in tomes and maps.

His father had a saying, only a fool entered a harbor he knew nothing about. Taesh desired to know about the cultures he came across. Thatt desire might have seen him potentially entered into the ranks of the Brown Ajah, but the true calling of the always smiling channeler was to use that knowledge to create peace. This desire was so strong that some of the Tower had jokingly gave the Atha'an Miere a salt name, he had been too young for one upon his entrance to the Tower, and so he was often referred to as Taesh Calm Seas.

So the Dedicated had found some books and even an old border treaty, and wanted to see these places on a map. So enmeshed was he in his quest for information on the lands he had only recently heard of, that Taesh did not realize as he approached the map on the table that someone else was currently using it.

""You are in my light,"

Taesh looked down at the female voice, already prepared to apologize in case he had made the mistake of blocking the view of an Aes Sedai. Before he could began the apology his mind registered the all white dress on the dark haired girl, and he knew the apology need not be full or grovelling.

"Can I help you?"

Taesh flashed a genuine smile, with an impish but innocent sparkle in his dark eyes, and stepped back. "I apologize. I need no assistance, I did not see you there. My mind was in the sea somewhere obviously."

The Atha'an Miere was not one for pulling rank. He had toed the lines of rank on the Star Song and even after years of training at the Tower, that trait had not left. He knew that some of the Accepted and Dedicated might use their elevated station against the Novices and Soldiers of the Tower, but he saw no need. Smiles and winks often bought him with ease what rank could do, without leaving a bad impression.

"Would you mind if I joined you? I need to cross reference some things against this map" he asked politely.

Sabine
Sabine wondered who this strange Dedicated was. She had never heard the expression "my mind was in the sea" before. The brogue of Illian was familiar to her from the various merchants who visited the estates, but it was not that which she heard in the man's voice. The goatee pointed to Tear, but there was an otherworldly quality to him that intrigued her, although she would rather have answers than a mystery to puzzle out.

"Would you mind if I joined you? I need to cross reference some things against this map." He smiled quite politely, and with the good graces of someone who had been brought up in a suitable manner. Quite possibly Tairen.

"Of course." Sabine gestured to the chair on her right, and slid her stationery slightly to the left to give the Dedicated some room to work. He had a few books in his hands, whereas she just had her notebook. And her dagger. She looked at it, wondering whether it was prudent to slip it back onto her belt, but then the map would curl back up. I should have no need of it, and I am in trouble if I do.

Once he got seated, she introduced herself properly. "I am Sabine ni Hayadan t'Masin. A pleasure to meet you." She offered a hand for shaking, although it was also angled slightly for kissing, if he deemed that appropriate. She had no clue as to his social station yet. "What is your interest in the west of Andor?"

Taesh sat down and smiled at the offered hand. At some of the ports his mother's ship had visited he had seen and met some nobles, and this Novice gave off that same aura. He took the hand in his with a gentle grip and shook it. He knew that many noblewomen preferred for a gentleman to kiss the backside of the hand, but Taesh decided against it. There were eyes everywhere in the Tower, and any sign of flirting between a Dedicated and Novice would see that particular Dedicated in a world of trouble. Taesh was not quite ready to test the bonds of his friendship with Jhanic by having to go to the Asha'man for penance. Besides which, rank and station were left behind in the Tower.

"Hello to Sabine. You may call me Taesh, formerly of the Star Song of Clan Rossaine" the Dedicated said by way of introduction. "I have an interest in all of the world, or really the people. I was listening in on a lecture by a Blue who has recently returned to the Tower, talking about her travels and some of the people she met. I had never heard of some of these places, so I wanted to come see what the Library had on them, and exactly where they are located." The Atha'an Miere Dedicated glanced at the map with a bit of excitement in his eyes. "I have found that a lot of the cultural differences in the nations has more to do with locale than birth or anything else."

"And what about you?" he turned back to the Novice. "What would you be happening to study?"

Sabine
Sabine had her puzzle, and a key to the solution. Taesh, formerly of the Star Song of Clan Rossaine. Her education in Irinjavar was second to none, or so her father had insisted. She could recall the titles of nobles and prominent houses from every nation west of the Spine of the World, and there were no clans amongst them. Only two peoples had clans, so much as the Saldaean was aware: the Aiel and the Atha'an Miere. There was nothing about Taesh that spoke of the Waste, which meant he was one of the Sea Folk.

With that quandary sorted, she listened to the Dedicated intently. He had an interest in the world, as she did. Of course, her focus was on locating the Horn of Valere, whereas his seemed out of simply curiosity. Not that there was anything wrong with that. Ignorance was never a charge that had been levelled at Sabine, even if her brothers seemed to abscond from their books to practice with their swords.

"I am collating a list of lost settlements," she replied in a friendly tone. She wanted to make a good impression on her first Atha'an Miere. Who knows what one may learn from such an opportunity? "I am looking for something that may be lost to the ravages of time, and if that is the case, one of these names may hold the key." She reached over to point at a small area of the map marked by a few villages. "See here. All of these places were abandoned some two hundred years ago after a number of droughts. Who knows what was left behind."

Sabine pulled her hand back to her lap. "This map may be a little out of date for your studies, Taesh. But if you have questions, I may be able to answer."

Taesh listened to Sabine, smiling the entire time. She seemed to be looking for something in one of those villages, while Taesh just wanted to know about the people and their habits. The Novice acted nice enough, and at least she wasn't staring like he was an item in a bazaar. Many folks, especially those far from the coast and harbor towns, had never spoken to one of the Seafolk; some of them resided in this Tower. In the beginning of his stay and training some had treated him like something rare, and he did not like the feeling much. Sabine however seemed inviting and open to conversation.

"What is the thing you are looking for? If I can ask?" The Dedicated responded. "My mother always said that many things lost on the shore end up in the sea. Who knows, your thing could be decoration in some Sailmistress's office right now, maybe even the Mistress of the Ships!"

Taesh had never met the woman, but rumor had it that she had a collection of rare and exotic items. Mayhap if his mother had been Wavemistress he might have had the chance to meet the woman who commanded the Clans of the Atha'an Miere. But his mother was just one of the twelve women who elected the Wavemistress, and so the Star Song had never been graced with the presence of the Mistress.

The Seafolk channeler looked to the map and then back to the Novice "I did not come to disturb you though. Tell me so, and I will be as silent as the moon of the waves."

Sabine
Sailmistress? Mistress of the Ships? The Moon of the Waves? They were all terms foreign to Sabine, although she understood some of the meaning behind Taesh's words. The Horn of Valere on one of the Sea Folk vessels. Now that would be a discovery!. She wondered whether any Hunter during any Great Hunt had ever thought to look amongst the Atha'an Miere.

Lips curled in a most pleased manner, and a light shone in the recesses of her ink black eyes. "You could be right." There was a jubilant note to her singsong voice. "Maybe you could show me your vessels one day. Oh, but I have failed to explain!"

The Saldaean turned the sheets of her notebook back to the first double page. Marked out in painstaking detail across both sheets was a picture of a looping horn. It curled in on itself four times, once in a large circle that took up its full circumference, then three smaller overlapping rings, before the last ended in a mouthpiece. There was the suggestion of engraved text on the instrument, although Sabine had made the text illegible - no-one knew what was actually written on it.

"The Horn of Valere," Sabine said in a hushed, reverential tone. "I am a Hunter of the Horn." She'd said that many times since arriving at the Tower, and most mocked the novice for it. She hoped to fare a little better with Taesh.

"I would be more than happy to show you the Star Song one day. It's the jewel of Rossaine in my opinion. Of course I'm not Cargomaster or Swordmaster, but I'm a Dedicated so that has to count for something."

Taesh's face was overcome by a brief moment of shock. He had heard mention of the Horn of Valere. The Atha'an Miere didn't know much about it, but apparently it was something meant to be used in the Last Battle. Once, when the Dedicated was much younger, his mother had given the gift of passage to a Hunter of the Horn. Taesh had been fascinated by the man, or more specifically his travels across the land. From what the Seafolk youth could determine at the time, these Hunters would follow whisper and rumor in hopes of finding the Horn.

"I have heard of the Horn before" Taesh told Sabine. "You blow it and the armies of the Light are yours to command, or some such. Have you checked the Vaults?" the last was asked jokingly. "I suppose though this would be the best place to find information. If the Library doesn't have information on it, then it probably can't be found. And then if you do find a clue, you can just open a gateway and be there before the tide changes. No luck? So what, you could check many places in one day."

Taesh gave a thoughtful look and then turned to give Sabine a stern look. "Why Novice Sabine I think that might be considered cheating." The stern look did not last long, before a sincere bout of laughter took over the Atha'an Miere. "Of course, there is nothing in the rules about stacking the odds in your favor I suppose."

Sabine
At the mention of the Vaults she raised an eyebrow. Aside from the fact that the presence of the Horn of Valere would have been touted by criers from Hama Valon all the way to Illian, the Vaults themselves were the exclusive domain of the Indigo Ajah - no chance for a mere novice to creep in.

Sabine frowned, hooded black eyes seeming intense. Gateways? She knew what Gateways were, but... Why had she not considered that before? Gateways were a perfect way to leave the Tower, and then she could keep Travelling around the world. No-one will find someone who can Travel, surely? Freedom from the Grey Tower, from the trappings of novice whites...

Too late, she realised, that anyone playing the Great Game would have read the set of her face and known her intentions. The Saldaean shook her head as if clearing away a thought; that may be enough for one of the Sea Folk not to see anything. She wetted her lips. "Hunters have been searching for the Horn for hundreds, maybe thousands of years. One should use every advantage one can, if the Horn is ever to be found. We will need it before the Last Battle." Her tone became serious with the last.

Sabine turned to properly face Taesh, one arm leaning on the table edge to support her. "You have a delightful way of phrasing sentences, Taesh. Is it just Taesh?" She did not know if the Atha'an Miere had family names like everyone else. How important was family to the Sea Folk? "How long have you been away from the Star Song? What made you come to the Grey Tower... or did someone force you?"

"Taesh Durlaen, though just Taesh will do. I came to the Tower to early to have earned a salt name, though some in the Tower have come to call me Taesh Calm Seas. I'm known too smooth things out; calm waters make for better sailing." Though it was not a true salt name, not one earned by feats and acts done on the sea, Taesh was still proud of the name that those who knew him in the Tower have gifted him with.

"I have been here for about five years now. As to how I came to the Tower, it is simple rather. I met an Asha'man at harbor one time, he wanted the gift of passage for a friend and some cargo. It was discovered that I could channel, and he and my parents made a bargain. I would come to the Grey Tower for training, though I have no idea what my parents get out of the bargain, though I'm sure I will know one day. Light willing, it will not be something that I will have to say no too. My people, we never leave a bargain unfulflled."

Taesh's eyes glazed over as he thought about the vision that the had seen in the Arches during his testing. He had no idea if it was a true vision of the future, or something that was conjured because of his fears. Either way, the thought was constantly in the back of his mind, and as he learned more and felt more and more like the Grey Tower was his home, the Dedicated knew that there was a chance he might be the first Atha'an Miere to break a bargain.
