All Work and No Play [Attn: Natlya/Bella]

Post by Roan » August 4th, 2016, 2:50 pm

Paks Liard
Morning around the yards came far too early, but Paks managed to get out of bed and face the day with the other learning ranks. She often had a smile on her face, even if that smile was only skin deep. Internally, the woman struggled with her experiences during the Seanchan attack, but she was not one to moan about her problems. More often than not, she’d rather drown the worries of the day in the bottom of a mug of ale, port or mead, and get on with it.

Unfortunately, as was often the case with such experiences, hangovers became par for the course. Paks had, thus far, done well to hide the effects of her overindulgence, or at least so she thought. She’d gotten herself into a fine pickle with the only way out seemingly up through the ranks. The very thought made her want to forget afternoon training and classes and find her way to one of the few pubs that seemed to be up and running after the attacks.

Despite her driving desire to lose herself in a bottle, Paks did actually train. She had just finished going through unarmed exercises on her own, finding the motions somewhat meditative. They helped calm her mind and center her in a way that was unfamiliar to the Drin, though she didn’t have the emotional vocabulary to explain it to anyone else.

The Drin’ had a bit of time before she was due for her next class on wielding daggers. It seemed all of the Drin’ were signed up for the class, and nearly everyone bragged about how they were going to become experts wielding two daggers against their opponents. The fighting thing did not come naturally to Paks. She had to work extremely hard to pass unarmed, and found she could actually fight competently against real opponents, but it was not second nature to the woman.

As she passed through the yards, Paks noticed a familiar face. Wearing the darker grey uniform of a Ji’, Paks watched as Natlya went through one sword form to another. The woman’s footwork, and bladework were inspiring to watch, in a way, but at the same time seemed all to complicated for Paks. She stopped and leaned against a nearby fence, and continued to watch Natlya move from one form to another. A sheen of sweat had formed on the Ji’, and someone stepped up to Paks, “She’s still goin’ at it? Been here since last bell. Girl’s workin’ herself hard.”

Paks looked over her shoulder to another Ji’ who shook his head and walked away. The Drin’ frowned when she looked back to Natlya. The woman had watched her friend (her lover?) die during their ill-advised excursion to the Seanchan camp. Paks didn’t know her well, but they were, in her mind, connected in some odd way.

Not too far away was a water trough. Moving over to it, Paks grabbed the ladle and gathered a scoop before moving towards Natlya, “Ji’, I don’t think the Master of Training would mind if you took a break for some water.” She flashed her charismatic smile and held up the ladle, making sure to stand well outside of the arc of the woman’s sword. “Perhaps come take a break and have a drink?”

The same song played over and over in Natlya's mind. It was not music, but a cacophony of emotion. You failed. The same words, over and over. Sometimes screamed, and sometimes whispered. It was always the same.

She had come to the Grey Tower because of Morgan. They said he had to go, and so they took him. She would not be parted from him, and so she came too. With not ability to channel, she chose to become a warder. And then she chose to come back, when she could have run off forever. She had nowhere else to go, really. And Morgan had been here.

And so she let them mold her. She trained, and she learned, and she worked towards becoming the sword and the shield that would defend a channeler from the harshness of reality around them.

Yet when the time came to protect the one most dear to her...

You failed.

She ate only enough to keep going. She slept only enough to keep functioning. During her training hours, she worked. During her free time, she worked. Morgan was gone, but she still had nowhere else to go. Except perhaps into the grave after him. Instead, she had to never fail again. If that meant working herself into the ground, so be it. By the time she crawled out, she'd never fail anyone again.

The voice didn't surprise her. It should have, but her startle response was muted with her exhaustion and sweat. She recognized the voice before turning to look its owner, knowing it for the woman who'd been there...on that day. At least it's not the one who fired the bow, Nat thought. If she saw that one again, she might do something... Well.

"The Master of Training does not dictate all my hours here," Nat replied simply, lowering her wooden blade and turning to Paks. The smile was friendly and would be welcoming, if she were in a mood to be welcomed. "I suppose I could use some water, though."

Paks Liard
Paks didn’t let her charismatic smile that was more of a smirk waver with the woman’s response. She didn’t understand what the woman was going through, as Paks hadn’t experienced such loss before in her life, so how could she. She simply passed the ladle over, “No, I suppose he does not, though all work and no play makes a Ji’dar a dull girl.”

Raising both brows and nodded to the sword in the woman’s hand, “I’ve seen you practicing with that more than I see anyone else practicing anything else. I’m not sure I’ve seen you take a break, or talking to anyone other than sparring partners. I’m no expert, but I don’t think working that hard without any social interaction is health. And by social interaction, I mean something outside of the Yards where you can blow off steam and relax.”

Paks learned to study her audience when she was with her little band of merry men and women, so she watched Natlya closely to see how she responded to what the Drin’ had said. Void or no, she thought she saw the mid-rank tense ever so slightly with certain things Paks had said. She didn’t know Natlya, not well, but had been there when her friend had died...by Fiona’s hand.

“Your name is Natlya, yes?” Technically, Paks should have been referring to her by rank, but she hoped it wouldn’t come to that, as she saw a woman who needed help. Whether she’d accept help that was veiled as an attempt to loosen up and have some fun was another question altogether, “I’m Paks, and I I was thinking of finding a pub to grab a pint and something to eat that doesn’t come from the Mistress of the Kitchens. Care to join me?” She flashed her charismatic smirk once again.

Natlya wondered why everyone around this place was so focused on getting her to stop working. Paks wasn't the first one who had been so, although for some reason, she was the one that least annoyed Nat in the process. Not that she wasn't annoyed at all, just less so than she had been with the others.

She took the water and sipped slowly, stifling her instant urge to decline the invitation. She didn't want to go anywhere. She didn't want to socialize. She wanted to work. She wanted to train. She wanted to improve.

She wasn't strong enough yet.

Still... Maybe if people did see her leave the Yards for something, they would leave her alone for a while. She'd meet whatever magical quota there was in people's minds for this sort of shite, and then they'd get off her back. She put the ladle back and stifled a sigh. "Sure..." she agreed, hiding most of her reluctance and resignation. "I suppose it can't hurt."

Paks let her smirk broaden into a smile, “Of course it can't hurt! I mean...the hangover could hurt, I suppose. I'm not suggesting we drink that much, mind, but enough to unwind and enjoy the evening.” The Drin might normally have commented on finding suitable companionship for the evening, but she knew better. The Ji’Val named Natlya needed friendship, and Paks suspected the last thing on the woman's mind was someone to share her bed with.

Nodding in a direction that led to the Warder Hall, Paks added, “Do you want to freshen up, or just go as is? I'm not much of a priss, and frankly do not care one way or another. I'm just happy to escape these grounds, even if for a few short hours.” The Drin didn't have the traumatic experience that Natlya had, but was processing her own demons from the Seanchan siege.

The crunch of cartilage under fist, the feel of bones snapping, the sound of a scream of agony…

Paks pushed the thoughts to the depths of her mind. Drink would help push the memories deeper into the depths, as she found, though it seemed only temporary. Pity, that.

It took no small amount of concerted effort for Natlya to even begin shifting her thoughts away from the training and working she had been so diligently and fervently focusing on to the idea of...going anywhere else. Even going to bed took a lot of effort, but it was a little easier to manage that because her body didn't give her very much option.

"I...suppose I should clean up a little," Nat finally granted. "I don't want to get kicked out of anywhere."

Brushing the last of her drying hair away from her face, she moved to fall in line with Paks as they walked away from the field. She wondered over what she thought she was doing. What possible company could she provide? Then again, this other woman seemed like enough company for anyone. So why does she even need me...

They reached the warder halls and Nat headed right for her room. "Do you need to as well, or do you want to wait for me?"

The Ji’Val was quiet, even when she spoke, and so serious. Paks was not known to be serious, and some might say she had an aversion to anything serious. Natlya, though, was an enigma to her. She'd watched her with the Soldier (was he Morgan?), and she hadn't seemed so serious then. She'd lost him, and it seemed with him, the spark she’d had, lost with him.

New goal for the night. Get the all too serious Ji’Val to smile, Paks thought to herself. The only question was: how? Copious alcohol? Seemed a good first step. After that? More alcohol.

Looking to Natlya shook her head, “I’m ready to go. I’ll wait out here.” She leaned against the wall outside what she hoped was Natlya’s room, otherwise she was going to look foolish instead of suave. She flashed her characteristic smirk, “Go get ready and don't worry about rushing. We got all night.”

Nat looked at her for another moment longer as she debated the wisdom of this entire idea, but then she nodded--relenting for a second time--before making her way into her room. She changed out of her dirty uniform and into something clean. Nothing fancy, since she hadn't worn much of anything like that since before going to the tower, but passable as "decent" at least.

She brushed her hair through quickly and then returned to where Paks did indeed wait on her. Had she been hoping the other girl would run off? Maybe. "Well, I've not been out much...for a while. You lead and I'll follow." Truth was, she had barely left the Yards since...since Morgan.

Both eyebrows shot up when Natlya stepped out of her room, and her smirk was not far behind, “You clean up well, Ji’Val. I think tonight is going to be a fine night, and you and I are going to brighten the room when we descent upon the Band of Brothers.”

Without another moment’s hesitation, Paks led the way out of the Warder Hall and across the Tower grounds. She was not one for long silences, and thus opted to tell one of the tales she would spin before a crowded inn. She thought it best to avoid conversations like, “What brought you to the Tower?” or, “Why do you want to be a Warder?” She doubted Natlya wanted a trip down memory lane.

It didn't take long for the pair to reach the pub. Ever chivalrous, Paks opened the door, “After you.” She stepped in after Natlya and then nodded towards the bar, “Ale, mead or whiskey?”

Natlya was glad that there was no attempt down that lane, although she wasn't consciously aware of her gratitude since she wasn't trying to anticipate what conversations would come up. She just walked and listened to whatever Paks might say, still wondering why the girl was going out of her way to bring Nat out. People are odd.

The more time passed, the less she looked at people with the eye of the thief and more with the eyes she was developing.

When they reached the tavern, she walked in. The other woman held the door for her, which was strange, but she thanked her and then walked to the bar. "Mead is fine by me," she said simply, taking a seat and waiting for the other. "Been a while since I was out drinking."
