Saldaean Farmgirls (Attn: Locke)

Post by Craig » July 30th, 2016, 10:01 pm

Sabine ni Hayadan t'Masin
A'vron whinnied, tossing her head playfully as Sabine ran the brush carefully over her. She was meant to be mucking out the stables as her last chore of the day, but when she had this chore alone she made sure to spend some time with her mare. The grooms were attentive and caring, but A'vron was Sabine's horse, and she yearned to ride her again. Not in the pastures where lessons were taught, but out in the wider world. She had travelled from Saldaea to Illian with A'vron. That left so many places unexplored, but more importantly, so many places that were not here.

One barely had to raise their head to see the destruction wrought down upon the Grey Tower and the city of Hama Valon. It was hardly fair to call Hama Valon a settlement at all now. What had not been consumed by flame had been looted by Seanchan or Shadowspawn, or just Hama Valoners attempting to salvage anything of worth. Throngs of townsfolk lived within the Tower grounds in makeshift tents, whilst they waited for their lives to start again. Sabine could sympathise. The Grey Tower was also holding her back, from living the life she wanted, not the life that had been thrust upon her.

Sabine stepped back away from A'vron, giving the mare a gentle kiss and a final pat before continuing on with her chore. "I will be back for you soon, Watcher." A'vron whinnied again, watching her owner with wide dark brown eyes. Sabine looked back forlornly, and returned under that sorrowful stare. She wanted nothing more than to jump on A'vrom's back and ride until the sun rose over the Caralain Grass, or the Plains of Maredo, or the Sea of Storms. Many here had forgotten, but Sabine ni Hayadan t'Masin was a Hunter of the Horn of Valere. She had learnt nothing of worth in her extended stay at the Tower, but she had also heard of no news that proclaimed it found. There was still time for her to make a life and name for herself, without any help from others.

She opened the saddlebags that lay on a hook just within A'vron's enclosure. She pulled something free, a discoloured map, well worn from use. She spread it open, balancing it carefully on top of the low fence. Sabine had stolen this from her husband's study before leaving Maradon: a near complete map of everything between the Spine of the World and the Aryth Ocean. It had to cost a fortune. The Tower had several, of course, but this was hers. She looked at the names of cities and tried to imagine them: Caemlyn, Cairhien, Ebou Dar, Tear.

It wasn't a sound that made Sabine turn around, but the casting of someone's shadow against the stables' walls. It was late at night, so only the dancing flames from the lanterns lit the figure's tall form. He was almost a foot taller than her, with a mop of unruly red hair and a way of moving that spoke of training. She first thought it was the Master of Training, but his man had a darker complexion and a foreign bearing. His expression was unreadable in the dark, but she had been caught standing doing nothing.

"Sorry Ji'alantin." She bobbed a quick courtesy to the Gaidin-in-Training. "I was just tending to my mare." She meant to come across as deferential, but her clipped Saldaean accent held a note of challenge. It probably did not help that she was also gripping hold of the map in one hand.

Terric
Surely this could have waited till the morning, Terric thought as he trotted towards the stables at an easy pace. Augus Gaidin had left a hairbrush in his saddle bags. Couldn’t he have sent a Drin or a Novice? He’d hoped once he became a Ji’alantin, these menial tasks would be behind him. Obviously that wasn’t the case. Best get this done quickly, the library called to him.

The inside of the stables smelled like dung and large animals, which Terric could only assume was a good thing. A few torches flickered. Hopefully the stable hands would remember to put them out at some point. Dung and hay both burned well, and while horses were giant brutes, they didn’t deserve to burn to death. Making a note to put out the torches, he made his way deeper into the stables. Augus Gaidin’s horse, where are you?He didn’t think the horse would still have his saddle on, but it was a place to start looking. Maybe a stable hand would know where the saddle went. There was a young woman near a rack of saddle bags, maybe he should ask her.

As he approached, she turned to face him. If she’d noticed his shadow, he’d be impressed. More likely though, it had been dumb luck. "Sorry Ji'alantin,” she said, giving one of those curtsy things Wetland women did. "I was just tending to my mare." Terric hadn’t quite gotten used to the new term of address, or getting respect from anybody this side of the Dragon Wall for that matter. That wasn’t what piqued in interest though, there were three seemingly minor things. Her voice wasn’t as respectful as he’d initially expected. That and her accent reminded him of Gaval Hanania’s. His former roommate had told him interesting stories about Saldean women. He’d have to stay on his guard. She held a large folded sheet of paper in one hand as well. He didn’t know what it was, but his curiosity was well and piqued.

He walked over to join her, “As you were, Novice…” he trailed off giving her a chance to offer a name. “Have you seen Augus Gaidin’s saddle?” Not one to throw around his authority, Terric kept his tone casual. Was the defiance a Saldean thing? Should he match her aggression? Maybe it was something else? Terric began checking saddle backs for Augus Gaidin’s hairbrush. He kept part of his attention on the Saldean girl. Too many oddities in this situation. Terric’s investigative mind wouldn’t let him ignore them.

Sabine
"As you were, Novice..."

"Sabine ni Hayadan t'Masin," she stated primly. The Grey Tower may have taken away her freedom, but they could not take her name away from her. Even the parts that sting. She stood straight-backed, looking up into the Ji's eyes without raising her chin up.

"Augus Gaidin?" Sabine picked up. "I am afraid I know not about the horses other than my own. However, the Gaidins' steeds are normally at the northern end of the stables." She gestured towards the other end of the stables, even if it was plainly obvious which direction north was.

When the Ji'alantin moved on, not seeming too concerned about the novice's inaction, Sabine exhaled a thankful breath. She carefully folded the map up, taking care not to add any more folds or creases. It was too expensive an item to be reckless with. When it was as before, she slipped it back into A'vrom's saddlebags and rested them securely on the hook. The mare nuzzled into the novice's shoulder as she pulled away. Reticently she broke contact with A'vrom, moving back to the wheelbarrow and tools resting against the other wall. She rolled the barrow down the stables, after the Ji, until she got to the next stall.

He was watching her, she realised. Not openly, but he kept her within view too often for coincidence. She had seen the same from snooty servants who thought they could wrangle something out from their masters. The only thing they tended to get out from Makari t'Bashere Hayadan was a birching and a swift escort from the estates.

"Can I help you?" she said indignantly. It was not phrased as a genuine offer; she simply did not like being stared at like some Saldaean farmgirl at a dance. She knew what men thought about when they were in stables with pretty women, or just of Saldaean women in general. If this man thought she was about to curl up in the hay with him just because it was late and they were alone, he would soon find seven inches of Maradon steel in his gut, Ji'alantin or not.

Terric
“Can I help you?” the little woman asked. Well more demanded. Obviously she’d caught Terric watching her. He wasn’t surprised, she’d been watching him out of the corner of her eye too. Why so suspicious. He stifled an internal groan, did she think he wanted to take advantage of her? He couldn’t help but be a little offended. Wetlanders knew nothing of Ji’e’toh. She seemed more than ready to stab him, Gaval Hanania had been right on that account. He was about to excuse himself and go back to searching for the blasted hair brush, but something still niggled at him. What had that paper been? It was rather large, like a Wetlander map of some sort. People often used anger and indignation to deflect attention. He’d spent too many years as a thieftaker, to let this pass without at least a little prodding. At worst, he’d inconvenience some novice. Too many currents ran under the surface here to ignore it. He though back to the dead Novice Avyra and her friends had discovered. That murder had all but forgotten in the subsequent attacks on the city.

Assuming, what he hoped was a disarming tone and posture, he asked, “Was that a map? In your hand earlier. Don’t worry, I miss my home too. I haven’t been back in nearly two years.” An indirect approach this time. Casually, he leaned against a stall door, and quickly straightened when the black monstrosity inside snorted.

Sabine
"Was that a map? In your hand earlier."

Her anger deflated, concern filling in the rapidly expanding void. She had been to the Mistress of Novices on enough occasions to know she never wanted to return there for less than exemplary reasons. Mirin Sedai had caned her on one of those visits, a memory that tore at her pride every time she remembered. She straightened on instinct, building up to face down the Ji'alantin's punishment.

"Don't worry," he said in a reassuring tone. "I miss my home too." He leaned against one of the stall doors nonchalantly. "I haven't been back in nearly two years." That nonchalance seemed to flash briefly into concern when the black gelding inside the stall snorted.

She smiled at his needless distress, and crossed the stables to the gelding. From a belt pouch Sabine produced an apple slice, and offered it to the animal to calm it. "I have not seen my homeland in five years," she replied evenly, "nor do I intend to go back. I never planned to stay at the Tower," she said with more heat than the Ji deserved.

Sabine considered him, this Ji'alantin. He was actually being more amiable than she had first perceived him to be. Now that he was in a better light she could see him clearer: an Aielman with grey eyes and a self-assured smile. Not the authoritarian figure she had initially thought, perhaps.

"Yes, it was a map. I plan to travel when the Aes Sedai tire of me and let me go." She turned her gaze fully onto him. "How much do you long to see your homeland, Aiel?"

Terric
The girl seemed to be at war with the whole world. Terric had met many young algai’d’siswai with the same attitude. They usually ended up in the deep desert with half a water skin, figuratively of course. It wasn’t his place to correct her on it, or was it? He was still getting used to his new rank.

Her question cut deeper than she probably knew. He did miss the Threefold Land, but he had stopped longing for it ages ago. It felt somehow disloyal somehow. He set his jaw, “I can miss a place without longing for it. My honor and duty are here, under this roof.” He softened his tone again, “I didn’t intend to stay very long when I first came either. I was determined to meet my toh and leave. I was being selfish. I knew we were fighting for something larger, but I don’t think I understood. Not then at least.”

Terric took a step forward, casually crossing his arms. “I’ve known plenty of Novices who want to see the world one day, but you seem more eager than most.” He gave her a knowing look, and added, “With that map and all.” Maybe she was a potential runaway. If so, he’d best talk her out of it before she got into real trouble.

Sabine
He was challenging her, this Aielman, although she couldn't tell if he was looking for her to succeed or to fail as he had. His step toward her, arms crossed, made Sabine reach halfway towards her dagger regardless, but she halted before this descended into foolishness. She knew full well that an unarmed Aiel could bounce a trained swordsman on their knee without any concern, and she wasn't trained on how to deal with soldiers. Not with her dagger at least.

The Saldaean opened herself to saidar, letting the warmth flowing from the female half of the Source fill her completely. The part of her that wanted nothing more than to return to her normal life vanished completely when the Creator's divine light suffused her being. As much as she railed against the trappings of the Grey Tower, she would not have traded the crown of Saldaea for the ability to feel the Source.

Sabine outwardly softened. Her muscles loosened as all tension vanished. The look of defiance burning from behind her eyes transformed into a contemplative look. If she had a mirror to hand, she may not have believed how she had changed, even with the evidence staring straight back at her from her own visage.

She shook her head slightly, the white ribbons in her hair swaying in counterpoint. "I know not of what you speak, when you mention fighting for something larger." She had seen no evidence of what it was the Grey Tower did, aside from trap people within their walls, and then have those walls torn asunder by foreign invaders. Sabine continued in a mild tone, even if the content of her words were heated. "I had a purpose for my life before the Mistress of Novices told me I could channel, before she insisted that I stay to learn about my abilities. I would rather return to the life I once had, than wait to die from old age or from leashed women launching fireballs at my vicinity."

Terric
The young woman’s countenance changed dramatically. The defiant fire vanished, replaced by a distant look. The shift was blatant, but Terric didn’t quite know what it meant. He lowered his arms to his sides, subtly shifting his weight for action. If she was a potential runaway, she might be planning on fighting her way free. She didn’t seem to be exhibiting any pre-assault indicators, but he didn’t have enough experience with people using the Power as a weapon to know for certain.

She shook her head, "I know not of what you speak, when you mention fighting for something larger. I had a purpose for my life before the Mistress of Novices told me I could channel, before she insisted that I stay to learn about my abilities. I would rather return to the life I once had, than wait to die from old age or from leashed women launching fireballs at my vicinity."

Terric didn’t blame her, but couldn’t she see? “You’re Saldaean, right? I know a thing or two about Borderlanders,” he said, keeping his demeanor causal, “Your entire culture is dedicated towards fighting the Shadow. The Borderland nations rebuff the Shadow from making territorial gains, well the Grey Tower also stands against the Shadow. I also had a purpose to my life before coming here. I’d hunted thieves and murders and worse in the Threefold Land, I’ve even had the chance to kill Shadowrunners. Staying here was still the right choice. Look, I can’t make your decisions for you. You’re an adult, even if the Tower doesn’t seem to think so. Do what you think is best, just remember your duty.” Terric turned his back on her and began digging through saddlebags until he found the brush. He hoped he’d been able to get through to her. He wasn’t sure what kind of Ji he intended to be yet, but he could use his new position to mentor the younger ranks.

Sabine
He turned his back, but Sabine was not done with him. She planted her fists on her hips. "Do not presume to tell me about my duty, Aiel." Her singsong voice was heated once more, the emphasis hard and scornful. "Do I look like a common soldier? I was not born to fight against the Shadow, any more than you were born to wear petticoats."

She made a step towards him. "But you are right. I knew my duty from the day I was born. I spent my entire life preparing for that duty, and when the time finally came to serve, someone else sought to use me for their own means." She made an irritated tsking sound. "No sooner had I extricated myself from that dungeon, than I found myself in another. I am being bandied about like a shipment of peppers, instead of as whom I actually am." She shook her head ruefully as the anger dissipated, looking at the Ji. "You would be hard pressed to understand, I suppose. You can chase your Shadowrunners whether you stay or go. Whereas I am forcefully kept from my dreams."

Sabine turned back towards where she had left the wheelbarrow. She lifted the shovel, opened the stall, and stepped in snapping the gate shut behind her. The bay stallion eyed her, but otherwise did not react to her presence. "Tell me Aiel, what brought you to the Tower? Are you trapped here like I am?"

Terric
Terric was realizing there was a lot more to this situation than he’d expected. There was a saying, When you’re lost in the desert, keep walking. So that’s what he did. Augus Gaidin would probably be annoyed that Terric was late, but his duty to mentor the lower ranks outweighed the man’s grooming needs. He’d meet that toh later. Pocketing the brush, he decided to dive into this mess head first.

Picking up another shovel, he unlatched the next stall. Giving the horse a Mind your place, death stare, he began to work. “Trapped is a matter of opinion. Like every other student, I can’t just come and go as I want without consequence. But I don’t consider myself trapped. This Roof has rules we all have to follow.” Shoveling more dung, he continued, “You’re right though. I don’t understand. I assume you didn’t mean literal dungeons, did you?” How much dung did horses make? he thought incredulously as he shoveled. “Why is life at the Tower so at odds with your dreams?”
