Corben's laugh was warm and Elaile found herself smiling back at him. She knew that Novices weren't supposed to socialize with Soldiers or...any men really but she found herself already wondering when she could see him next. Maybe she could suggest they go out for a morning horse ride before first chores? His short dark hair showed a hint of curl just around his ears and she found herself wondering what it would look like long. She shook herself from that train of thought as he turned to re-wet his brush.

“Oh I suppose that would do it. I haven’t had interactions with the Accepted but if they are like the Dedicated I am surprised your cot hasn’t been moved here.” he said. Elaile nodded. She had absolutely put her foot wrong with the Accepted and she would probably continue to pay for it until she was raised herself.

She listened with interest as Corben explained his family business, forgetting to scrub the floor and leaning against a pedestal, tucking her feet under her skirts as he described his life before the Grey Tower. She found it fascinating that he had been an important part of a real business. The most she had been given responsibility for before coming to the Tower had been making polite conversation with visiting dignitaries at dinners and dancing with nobles at balls.

“How about you Elaile, was your arrival here sudden or did you know of the spark before arriving? Other than the constant floor washing, I hope your time here has been treating you well,” Corben said making Elaile laugh.

Her laugh died out quickly though as she considered how to answer. Anytime she had to explain her path here, and the Tower's connection to her mother she felt a stab of self-consciousness. How could she explain that she had come alone, that she hadn't heard from her Aes Sedai mother in almost a year now? Corben had been so open about his own family that Elaile decided to tell him more than the others who had asked.

"I knew I had the spark pretty early on." she started "My mother is an Aes Sedai...she actually used to be a Sitter for the Blue Ajah here although she no longer lives in the Grey Tower." She faltered slightly. "She always said she wanted me to train at the Tower, but she had to...leave before bringing me here herself." She shrugged "We both live with my grandmother in Tanchico but my mother is often gone on long trips. I honestly don't know what she does when she's gone." She bit her lip realizing how odd that sounded and pushed on. "My grandmother's Grey advisor one day told me I couldn't wait any longer and so I was sent with a group of soldiers to escort me and have been here ever since."

She stopped and thought about her time since then before answering whether it had been going well. "My time here has been good so far....despite the chores I suppose. I loved living in Tanchico, but you're right- the feeling I get when holding the Source is irreplaceable. It's like I'm filled with joy." She smiled at him, and thought back to something he had said earlier that had been nagging at her.

"You said some of the Dedicated were annoyed that they had to teach you outside? Why do you have your lessons outside?" Elaile remembered Corben had also said he spent most of his time at the alum mines underground. Maybe he was just trying to make up for lost sunshine but his words seemed significant, she thought.

Corben
Corben sat beside Elaile, his brush forgotten on the cool marble floor, as he grew more and more intent on their conversation.

As he listened to Elaile he was both amazed that her mother was an Aes Sedai, and that she was so open about the whole of the situation with him.

He had heard many channelers did not have children or wives of their own. And listening to Elaile he wondered if that was not part of the reason. "It must be hard balancing demands of Tower, Ajah and more so for a Sitter," he said consolingly to the woman as she paused.

Corben was surprised when she stated that she had lived in Tanchico. While it explained her braids, he wondered at the lack of a veil. He also caught the reference to a Grey advisor and wondered at her possible position, but he didn't know enough about Taraborn to guess.

Her face lit up when she was talking about the One Power and the feeling it gave a person to wield it. It truly was one of a kind, a common thread only channelers could share.

"You said some of the Dedicated were annoyed that they had to teach you outside? Why do you have your lessons outside?" She asked him, Corben pausing for a moment to shift into a more comfortable position.

"As someone born with the spark, you were probably advised about the dangers facing Wilders. After using my power in a storm and mudslide, I developed a Block. As far as we've determined I can only use Saidin while outdoors and standing barefoot. So for now until I break it, they must teach me in the channeling yards," Corben finished, glad for the chance to discuss the Block outside of his Soldier peers.

"As someone born with the spark, you were probably advised about the dangers facing Wilders. After using my power in a storm and mudslide, I developed a Block. As far as we've determined I can only use Saidin while outdoors and standing barefoot. So for now until I break it, they must teach me in the channeling yards," Corben said.

Elaile nodded contemplatively. She had heard a little about Wilders from her mother but she honestly didn't know much apart from that they often had trouble learning to embrace the Source at will.

"That makes sense then as to why you had all that mud on you before." She looked at him thoughtfully "I know saidar and saidin are completely different, but do you think there's anything I could do to help? I know we're not supposed to but we could maybe practice together?" She paused "I don't know if that would be useful, but maybe we could try approaching it differently than your teachers?" She smiled, "My old nurse said that I was stubborn enough to teach a mule to dance- I don't give up easily when I want something."

All of a sudden Elaile heard the distant clicking of wooden boots on the smooth marble floors. Only one person in the Tower walked like that, as if she were stomping everywhere she went. Accepted Prina- the woman who was quickly becoming Elaile's nemesis. Her eyes widened in fear. "Oh no!" She said quickly scrambling to her feet and grabbing Corben by the arm. She hauled him up with her and whispered breathlessly "That's her- the Accepted I told you about"

The clicking was coming closer and Elaile was sure the Accepted would turn into the hallway at any moment. She looked around in a panic. Prina was going to turn into the hallway and see them at any moment! Not only would Elaile get extra chore duty for letting someone help her with chores but they would probably both be forbidden from socializing until they were raised. That was the last thing she wanted! she thought, finally noticing a plain wooden door down the hallway from where they stood. Elaile gripped Corben's hand and practically dragged him to the door, flinging it open and giving him a little nudge. "Stay in there till she's gone" She gave him a quick smile and added "Please?" remembering her manners at the last minute.

Elaile caught a glimpse of a tiny closet, barely big enough to hold the Soldier before she shut the door and hustled back to the scrub brushes. She managed to sink to her knees and bend over her brush right as the Accepted turned and entered the hallway. The tall thin woman had a long face and bright red hair that always seemed to be struggling to escape the Accepted's tight braid. Accepted Prina paused a few feet away and tapped her foot in front of Elaile's face.

Elaile raised her eyes and met the Accepted's scowl. "Oh hello Accepted Prina. How are you doing on this fine day?" She put on an ingratiating smile and hoped that Corben would stay quiet in his hideaway.

OOC: Feel free to write Accepted Prina's response if you want!

Corben
Corben was surprised by her offer to help, and he could tell it was sincere. He had not thought about trying that approach, as they were often told that men and women channelers were like fish and birds.

All of a sudden Elaile stiffened, and Corben could hear the scuffing of boots on the tiles.

Corben was shocked when he saw her eyes widened in fear. "Oh no!" Elaile said quickly scrambling to her feet and grabbing Corben by the arm. She hauled him up with her and whispered breathlessly "That's her- the Accepted I told you about"

Corben instantly knew why she was worried, he would have felt the same should a Dedicated come upon them, even with the innocence of the conversation the middle ranks seemed to react first and take explanations later.

Elaile gripped Corben's hand and practically dragged him to the door, flinging it open and giving him a little nudge. "Stay in there till she's gone" She gave him a quick smile and added "Please?"

Corben nodded as quickly as he could while she shoved him into a tight space, little wider than he was and cramped with shelves. "Yes, I will wait Elaile," he said though his whisper was lost to the wood of the door as she quickly shut the door.

Light what a mess, I'm like a tinker the Lord's daughter is hiding, Corben thought with a wry grin. All he knew was Elaile seemed nice enough that he wouldn't want her to earn more trouble by him.

Prina
Prina walked through the hallway of the Grey Tower, smiling to herself as she saw Novices jumping to work, putting extra vigor in their polishing of scones and fixtures.

As she walked, the loud tromping of her boots was lost to her, she had been in a particularly foul mood since failing in her class that morning. Breathing deep, she tried her best to assume the calm of an Aes Sedai before checking on Novice Elaile.

Prina could see the Novice was still at work, and she sniffed when she had to admit that the floors were remarkably clean. She then paused a few feet away and tapped her foot in front of Elaile's face.

"Oh hello Accepted Prina. How are you doing on this fine day?" The pretty young Novice said with what Prina took to be a practiced smile.

Prina had been on the end of this Novice's spirit several times and she recalled the gall of the Novice to suggest that she wash floors herself. Tugging her braid, she tried in vain to smooth her red hair into a semblance of tidiness. Elaile's grace, even when covered in soap and grime from the floors made her feel awkward.

And so she regarded the Novice with icy reserve,"I am fine Child, and I see you should be done here soon. As you have classes to come, I would suggest you finish in time to clean up. It would not do for a Novice to appear before the others as a scullery maid," Prina said as she made to walk off before the young woman had a chance to respond, but she paused in her departure when she spotted the mud caked sandals on the floor.

"Did you see who left these here Child? To think of some labourer bringing such filth into the Grey Tower itself," said Prina as she grabbed the sandals and turned when Elaile went to speak.

"Yes Child? I will take these to the refuse bin, and you may consider your chore done. For today that is," she said with a tight smile for the pretty blonde Novice.

Prina's voice was chilly as she responded to Elaile's greeting. "I am fine Child, and I see you should be done here soon. As you have classes to come, I would suggest you finish in time to clean up. It would not do for a Novice to appear before the others as a scullery maid."

Prina tried to give Elaile a supercilious look and succeeded in looking more like she was suffering from stomach distress. The unpleasant Accepted lifted her skirts in an attempt to glide away before Elaile could respond and nearly tripped over Corben's shoes in the process.

Elaile shook her head. Of course Prina would notice a pair of men's sandals abandoned in the middle of the hallway she chided herself.

Elaile fished for an explanation but Prina cut her off before she could get a word in, taking the shoes with her as she sashayed away. The Accepted's stomping gait ruined any hope she had of appearing graceful and Elaile made a face at her back. As if she could ever look like a scullery maid! She looked at her sodden skirts and admitted inwardly that she didn't exactly look her best. Elaile huffed and rose to her feet waiting for Prina to disappear around the corner before she opened the plain wooden floor.

Corben stood stock still inside the small room, his head nearly brushing the low shelves overhead. His handsome features registered a flash of surprise as she flung open the door and Elaile realized belatedly she should have given him some warning. He probably thought the Accepted had seen through their ruse and found him out. The space was truly little more than a closet and Corben had to twist his shoulders to fit in the narrow opening.

"I hope you weren't too attached to those sandals." she said with an apologetic smile. "You may have to be barefoot inside now too. That terrible woman took them before I could come up with an excuse." Elaile realized she was blocking the doorway and quickly stepped aside to let Corben come out. "She reminded me I have classes to get to. I'm sorry for keeping you so long from your own tasks. It was kind of you to help me clean." She paused, glancing away as she tried to bolster her courage "Would you....like to meet again sometime? On purpose this time?"
