Gareth Tomason Asha'man Until the young man came bursting in looking for him, it had been a rather average morning in the infirmary.

Gareth had, despite the early hour, already attended a few injuries and some very frightened ill folk from Hama Valon who had come seeking more intensive treatment than the city could provide. It was part of the duty of the Tower, he felt, to tend to the people within its walls as well as those who lived without.

He was just finishing up one such case when the young man came in. He had not met the other, but had seen him in the infirmary in days past. When he said that Ria needed him, well, her husband's heart stopped for a beat before the Soldier considerately (whether he knew it or not) reassured him and let his heart begin again.

"I shall follow," Gareth replied, his voice rumbling like mountains grinding together.

With a quick word to Thea that he was needed in the Yards, he hurried out. Being that the infirmary and the Yards had been purposely and wisely situated close to one another, it was not a long journey. He asked no questions as they walked, because he knew that all would be answered shortly. And he was right, although this answer certainly wasn't the one that he'd been expecting.

He nodded in greeting to his wife and the silent Gaidar, but said nothing as he lowered himself beside the obvious corpse. It didn't take a Yellow to recognize that. What was also clear was that this was no sparring accident, or any sort of accident. She had been murdered, and he was sure a hunt was already on.

Reaching down, he respectfully checked the fingers--only to discover they were all broken, and roughly. He tests the joints he could. "She has not been dead long," he rumbled. Taking a breath, he reached into the One Power and seized the male half of the source. Long practiced, he forced it to his bidding with ease.

Creating the fine mesh of Spirit, he lowered it upon the body. "Her fingers were broken after she was dead," he said, letting the weave seek out everything about her and relay it to his mind. His pale eyes moved to the gash opening her neck, where her head leaned back like it was nearly taken off. He frowned, for more than the obvious reason.

"That cut happened just after she was killed, but it didn't kill her," he determined. "She was suffocated. I'm seeing the signs of air deprivation all through her body."

A flash of movement beside him made him look up. Lysira Gaidar was speaking. He knew that his wife could read her signs, although he was not nearly as conversant and even though he was sure she was wrapped in the Void, the swiftness of her movements belied her agitation and he wondered who the girl had been to her.

"She asks if maybe the knife cut could have been to hide the marks around her neck," a Ji'dar said. A few trainees were lingering around the edge, not yet chased off though maintaining a respectful distance. This woman--wearing the uniform of a Ji but looking a bit older than the average trainee--stepped forward slightly. The diminutive Gaidar was looking at her with surprise. "I can read your signs," she admitted.

Lysira nodded slowly and turned back to Gareth. He contemplated the question. "It's possible," he said. "The blood on the ground makes it clear she was killed here. I'm guessing...not planned, so strangulation was likely with hands. The prints left on the flesh could give clues as to the person who did it..."
OOC: Leaving this open for it Zeen or Ria want to react, if anyone wants to talk to Seira or ask Lysira questions, or if Ravak or Dax want to show talking to people/searching. If you want hints as to clues or what-not, PM me!

Ravak
Rav would have been quite happy to return to his office, to dish out the orders required to keep everyone out of the Yards, but the Mistress of Arms had other ideas. Accompanying her back to Ani's body, Riahana handed out orders to those assembled. Rav glanced briefly at Dax as they were sent away to question the onlookers, who clearly did not know that this was none of their business. The Master of Training felt a growl rise up in his throat, but he forced it down.

There had been no onlookers when he'd originally arrived, just Dakson and Zarius. If anyone else other than the murderer had borne witness, then none of them would have stumbled so casually upon Ani without word that a body had been found. None of these people will be of help, he thought angrily, although the anger wasn't intended for them. No, that was all focused inwards. How couldn't I track that scent? I've never had this issue before, not even in the Blight. It probably meant that something else was at work, but the Shienaran couldn't help but beat himself up about it. If Riahana hadn't been directing orders, he would have got most of the classes reorganised, and would have been conducting a room-by-room search of the Warder Halls for that scent. At the very least, that would rule out any involvement from the Gaidin or Gaidar.

Most of the crowd recognised the Master of Training, and drew down on themselves as they awaited his ire. It was too late to run with both Dax and Rav upon them. Instead of meeting their expectations of a rebuke, he made a simple request. "If you saw anything at all amiss this morning, stay. Otherwise, return to your classes, or to your quarters if your class is scheduled for the yard. All classes in the yards are cancelled today." Word of mouth alone would carry that order to most ears, and once a Gaidin or two that wasn't caught up in this had it confirmed, everyone would know. The search would come later.

A couple of Ji'dar remained, as did a Dedicated that Ravak knew from the Infirmary. "So, you all saw something odd this morning. Right, Jini is it?" Rav beckoned one of the Ji'dar to come a few paces away. "Step aside, let's talk. You two, stay."

OOC: Since this thread kinda lost its mojo, I'm doing the wrap-up. Thanks for everyone who joined in. <3
Lysira Walker Gaidar Through the diligence of the Warder Yards, aided by the skill of Gareth Asha'man, it only took two days for the murderer to be apprehended.

In manacles, he was bound and held in a cell of the Grey Tower as he awaited judgement. The guard let Lysira in to see him, but when she saw his face, she didn't know him. There was something familiar about him, but she couldn't place it. Her ebony eyes glittered in the dim light of the torches, sitting peaceably in their sconces on the thick stone walks.

She circled him and he just sat with his head bowed. Kneeling, the chains and shackles holding him in place in the center of the room as she moved like a predator ready to pounce.

There was nothing spectacular about him. No shadows hanging from him like a mantle. He just looked like...a boy. She guaged her couldn't have been much older than Ani, maybe nineteen winters. Twenty at a stretch. He had dirty, brown hair that hung over his forehead. His build was...average by most standards.

In front of him once more, she knelt so she could look into his face. When he lifted his head, she saw a haziness to his muddy-colored eyes but she couldn't be sure.

Why? She mouthed the word because she didn't think he knew her signs and she didn't intend to write it. It was one word, easily read off one's lips, especially paired with her perplexed expression.

"I loved her," he said. His voice was dead. Or was it broken? It seemed to drift between the two with every other word. "She wanted nothing to do with me, but I loved her. If only she could have seen that...but then I was to..." He hesitated, wavering and dropping his head again with a long sigh. "If only she hadn't cast me away."

Lysira's dark brows knit. Something didn't add up... The violence of a spurned lover was clear, but then the rest... Did he just try to cover it up? Maybe it really had nothing to do with her, or anything. Just someone covering their tracks.

Why was she even trying to understand someone who would kill a woman just for turning him down? Even Lucan hadn't killed her when she left him for Jerid, and she knew for a fact that he was the Shadow's Man. So how could she even try to understand this. The Tower would judge him. She would leave him to the not so tender mercies of the system.

Rising, she left his cell without another word.

"Gaidar."

The voice surprised her slightly, not having expected it, and she turned to see Ji'dar Seira. Their eyes met. The Ji'dar was...too old to be a trainee, really, but Lysira knew the circumstances. The other woman stood a little taller than Lysira, but most did. Seira glanced away, almost embarrassed, and Lysira waited.

'I am sorry for your loss,' the other woman signed. 'They told me that I could find you here. I...wanted to offer my services. As you can see, I am skilled in your signs and I know that you need a translator. I'm sure I can't fill Ji'dar Ani's shoes, but I would not want you to be without a voice.'

Looking the woman up and down, Lysira considered. Seira seemed to have a way of being useful, perhaps it was the Wheel weaving its way through things. 'Walk with me. We'll talk.' She nodded and the other Ji'dar smiled slightly, falling into step with her as they made their way away from the cell and the dark puzzle within.
