Welcome to the Gardens: one of the most tranquil areas of the Tower Grounds. Birds sing in the trees which line the wide paths between beautiful flower beds and serene lakes. There are benches to sit and listen to the waterfall, and there is neatly trimmed grass to lie on and rest. Novices and Soldiers as well as Warders in Training can be seen, sweeping the stone paths as Accepted and Dedicated study from books and relax under leafy trees.

Phineas
A Vulnerable First Meeting
Phineas thought he had found a decently secluded part of the Gardens. He was shaking from the disappointment of his most recent training time. Saidin kept eluding him, the stream of the power flowing through his fingers, so to speak, as he tried to reach out and grab hold with the ability that had been born inside of him. Perhaps, that was what was the most frustrating of his current trial: he had been born to channel. Still, some might have said he’d been born to beat metal at an anvil, but that ability had only really developed after hours of work in the forge. In his mind, he could acknowledge the need for practice, but that did not eliminate the pain in his heart. All around him, he could see the progress others were making. The small successes felt so little when compared with the other Soliders’ and Novices’ advancements. He had even heard that one of his acquaintances had been raised to the Accepted recently. It didn’t matter that she had been at the Grey Tower longer than he had: he felt so unaccomplished next to all the rest.

Thus, he was sitting in the furthest corner of the Gardens that he could find, letting out his frustration as was only possible. His black coat and shirt lay on a shrub; he had not wanted to drench the garments in sweat as he worked through some of the exercises he’d used to build up muscles as a blacksmith’s apprentice. The hard workout helped him calm down, but it had not been enough to fend off the tears that had begun to fall as Phineas had finished his workout. Even the satisfaction that came at the end of his routine was not enough to compensate for his disappointment.

Thus, he found himself on the floor, tears slowly falling down his face. He was constantly trying to clear his nose and wipe away the excess fluids. The coolness of the air on his sweaty body would’ve felt good in any other moment, but he was too caught in his own emotions to really delight in it. What more could he do to progress? Pondering that question, Phineas heard rustling and walking from the path that led to his secluded area. Frightened that someone would see him and realize by his face what he’d been doing, he cast around for a place to hide. Unfortunately, being an open area big enough for the hulking Soldier to exercise, there was no hiding place readily available. As the walking came closer, Phineas moved to wipe his face and feigned being midway through his exercises in hopes that his red, wet face would be mistaken as the result of exertion and not emotion. When the figure finally manifest, Phineas stopped what he was doing and saluted, “Good afternoon, Dedicated,” he said, suddenly aware that he was out of uniform on the Tower grounds.

Ayden
The tight, high collar of Ayden’s uniform seemed more annoying than usual as he walked the Garden paths towards one of his usual haunts. He liked spending time here, especially when the weather was warm. It reminded him of home a little bit. Though he would kill to see an actual beach and smell the salt of the ocean.

Clearing his mind of thoughts that would only make him homesick, he started off the main path into the grass. There was a patch of trees and bushes that created a nice, secluded area. One he had often used for… discreet rendezvous. As he approached this time, he heard a sound he didn’t expect. Was that someone crying? He stopped in his tracks for a moment, unsure of what he’d heard. The sound stopped so he continued on, when he rounded finally into view, what he saw was definitely not what he had expected to find.

Before him was a beautiful, muscled, light-haired man in the middle of some kind of exercise routine. He looked to be a little shorter than Ayden, but larger in build. The man was also shirtless and his muscles were accented by the sweat caused by his exertion. Ayden couldn’t help but look him up and down as the man noticed him, stood and saluted. Ayden managed to keep his eyes from lingering, for too long anyway.

“Good afternoon, Dedicated,” the other man said to him. Ayden finally noticed the uniform and the sign of him being a Soldier. That explained why he didn’t recognize him, he must be fairly new. The man’s face was red and flush, though he couldn’t be 100% sure if it was from crying or just the exertion.

“Well met, Soldier. My name is Ayden. No need to worry about formalities around me, especially here in the Gardens. I came out here to relax. This spot isn’t usually found by many, you must also be someone who likes the occasional seclusion. I hope I’m not bothering you, I myself wouldn’t mind some company, if you don’t. What’s your name?”

Phin
The man that Phineas had just saluted was a tall drink of water for his eyes. Even in the midst of his angst, he could see that the other man had a kind face and blue eyes. Phineas instantly felt comfortable near the man, and he couldn’t say why. As the Dedicated addressed him, Phineas was even more relaxed. No need to worry about formailities… Phineas idly speculated how far he could push the informal, but he tucked the fantasy brewing in his mind into the backroom of his mind, to be viewed at a later time, when he could truly enjoy the fantasy—mind, body, and soul. “I am Phineas, Ayden” he replied to the man’s question before turning and grabbing his jacket. He didn’t put it on, however, just held it close in case someone else walked by. He gestured for Ayden to join him on the floor.

“What brings you out to the gardens today, Ayden?” Phin asked kindly. He knew his voice had that throaty sound that comes after crying for some time, but he pretended not to notice. If he didn’t draw attention to it, perhaps Ayden wouldn’t notice. The breeze continued to pick up, and Phineas let himself enjoy the feel of it on his skin. He leaned back on his arms, looking over at Ayden in his relaxed position and awaiting his reply.

Ayden
When Phineas grabbed for his jacket, Ayden’s mind subconsciously willed the man not to put it back on. It was actually a miracle Ayden hadn’t voiced the wish out loud. He smiled warmly as the soldier introduced himself. Ayden joined him sitting on the ground, grateful to let a load off and relax. He unbuttoned a few buttons down his uniform just a little past his collarbone and also allowed the breeze to help him relax a little bit.

Ayden’s mind raced with ideas and yearning as Phineas leaned back on his arms, showcasing the muscles in his chest and arms. He managed to look away to answer the man’s question, but he knew Phineas had caught him looking. He’s just a soldier, Ayden. You’re a dedicated. This is incredibly inappropriate. Keep it together! his inner voice yelled at him. Granted, that hadn’t stopped him from trying with a former Keeper… Nope, nuh uh. You remember how well that turned out?

Clearing his throat as he looked over the beauty of the Gardens, he got his mind back on track. “I come pretty regularly to relax. Today was pretty stressful working in the infirmary. An accident in the city brought us a bunch of extra patients and we started running low on some of our basic supplies, which meant lugging up crates from the storage cellars.”

Ayden allowed his gaze to return to Phineas’ and managed to keep it at eye-level, though his beautiful blue eyes weren’t helping all that much either. “How about you, Phin? Do you mind if I call you Phin? What brings you out to the Gardens? There is no shortage of fitness spaces and equipment in the Yards. Too many prying eyes?” He said the last bit with a bit of a wink. Light, you just can’t help yourself can you…

Phineas
Phineas could feel the Dedicated eyes on him as he relaxed. His heart and mind were heavy, so he did not preen under the attention he was receiving as he might have done when he was in a better mood. He did, however, file away the information concerning this Dedicated. If his eyes were wandering, then Phineas could be a little more relaxed with his interactions. That was good to know. He shuffled idly as he listened to Ayden describe the circumstances by which he normally came to the gardens, and his shuffling brought him just an inch closer to the man. Their shoulders would have touched if either moved the wrong way. Phineas saw now that Ayden had unbuttoned a few of the buttons on his cloak, and he surreptitiously tried to peek inside the garment. It was too dark, however, and he saw only the outline of what he could imagine—a hint of a hint but enough to fan the fire kindling inside Phineas.

Alright, so, maybe he wasn’t upset enough to miss this opportunity.

“I wanted some privacy,” Phineas explained. “I can’t help but feel someone’s eyes on me when I practice in the Yards, whether it’s a Novice, Accepted, or even some of the men who are training.” He paused for a second. “Not that I mind when someone looks,” he admitted. “I just want to choose who sees. I want to want them to see what I will let them. I do not give free shows for any young buck or doe to use in their minds later.” He smiled coyfully and winked at the Dedicated, knowing full well that he was putting on a show then and there. “You know, this breeze is quite wonderful, but you won’t get the full effect of it with your coat still on,” he added offhandedly. So, he wasn’t being subtle, but the Dedicated hadn’t been either. They wouldn’t be able to do much—ranks being what they were, but some harmless flirting wouldn’t go amiss. Plus, Phineas very much wanted an eyeful of what he could not have if only to motivate him to get to a position where he could have it.

Ayden
If Ayden had been unsure if Phineas would welcome his attentions or advances, all of that had become quite settled. Ayden had pulled many of the same moves or comments in his own endeavors and recognized them immediately. The subtle way Phineas inched closer to him could have been just the actions of an interested person in hearing about Ayden’s day. The coy smile and the wink made it much more plain, and then the comment to remove his uniform coat had definitely pushed it over if it hadn’t been already. Heat flushed through Ayden’s body to a few obvious places, though the visible one being his face as he blushed a little and looked at the ground, letting out a small laugh. His inner voice was drowned out by the sound of his heart pumping loudly.

Why not? he asked himself.

“You know, I think you’re right, this day is far too beautiful and I would hate to not take advantage of the breeze.” Ayden stood up and unbuttoned his jacket the rest of the way. He did it slowly enough to give Phineas a little show, but not too slow as to make it too sexual or awkward. Upper body now bare, he laid his jacket on the low branch of a nearby tree before sitting down again next to Phin, ‘accidentally’ allowing their shoulders and arms to brush as he sat back down. “I can understand why you would want some privacy. The show is quite nice. I’m glad I get a front row seat for it.” He added, the blush replaced on his face with a warm smile and a confident demeanor.

Phineas
Phineas had only just been teasing. He never thought the Dedicated would agree with his suggestion and remove his coat, but when the man did, Phineas couldn’t tear his eyes from the other man’s muscles. Phin knew he looked good with his blacksmith’s body. It suited him. The lean, muscled look of this man suited him too, even though it was different than the look Phin had. He felt his mouth water at the sight of the half-dressed Dedicated. Then, the sunlight reflected off of the sword pin on the man’s coat, and Phineas was brought back to his senses. It would not do to start this kind of relationship with someone in a position above him. The Asha’man and Aes Sedai would not be pleased with him, and he was just starting to get a hang of the life here at the Grey Tower. There was no need to create more ripples than absolutely necessary.

Therefore, Phin decided to ignore the Dedicated’s obvious advance, and he changed the subject. It was a tactic he’d learned conversing in the Library. “You know, Ayden, I was thinking about Saidin the other day,” he started, adopting a musing tone. “I wonder why it is that Earth and Fire are typically stronger in men while Air and Water are typically stronger in women. I know that Saidin and Saidar do not differ in strength concerning the elements, so it must have something to do with the people who wield the Power. Could it really be as simple as gender distinctions? Or is there some underlying character trait that is common in men or women which defines which elements you are more capable weaving?” The question was rather tedious, and he doubted that Ayden had ever really considered something like this—not because he thought him dumb but because he doubted anyone outside of the White or Brown Ajahs considered these questions. He had ideas, and he thought they might change the way he made ter’angreal. But he was playing that one close to the chest.

Ayden
Ayden knew he and Phineas were connecting on a physical level. It was a familiar feeling to him, and he could tell in the glances they’d held that it was certainly mutual. That’s why he was caught off guard when Phineas suddenly changed topics so abruptly. Was he just toying with him, playing hard to get maybe?

Or… he’s smart enough to know what a bad idea anything beyond flirtation would be, unlike you. The voice in his head chastised him.

It took him a moment to both catch onto the complex question Phin had asked him, and to force himself to look away and stop admiring the man’s body.

“I, uh, that’s a good question.” He took a moment to consider it. He’d never been what anyone would call an academic by any means, but he could think on deep questions every now and then. Especially if he was doing it with an attractive, shirtless man in a beautiful place like the Gardens.

“I imagine it is like anything else in the world. They’re not absolute, just common occurrences. Some men have strength in Air and Water over Earth and Fire, some other combinations altogether. Why are some better at singing, or sewing, or dancing, or commerce? I imagine there’s no real reason, it’s just how it is.”

He eyed Phineas, trying to gauge his reactions. “Do you have a theory?”

Phineas
Phineas listened to Ayden’s reply and thought the reasoning was sound. Yes, different people had different talents, and there were some men who were more skilled with Air or Water than with Earth or Fire. Phineas hadn’t met someone like that, but he knew they were out there. At least, his Asha’man teachers—who could not lie—had taught him as much. So it was essentially the same thing as fact. Still, there was no balance in men. The majority of men who could channel favored Earth or Fire.

“Perhaps, it has something to do with the balance of the Pattern,” Phineas countered. “The Creator made this world in balance, and he made men and women. Each man and woman is unique, but on the whole men are different than women. We have different bodies, more so than the obvious distinctions. Something in our bodies allowed for such impressive muscles to develop.” He took a moment to flex and show off his muscles. He knew that perhaps this might distract Ayden from his point, but Phineas enjoyed the looks he got from the man, even if they couldn’t take it beyond looking yet.

After flexing, he paused for a moment to think through his words before continuing. “There’s even something particular about men that allow us to channel saidin instead of saidar, while women can only channel saidar instead of saidin,” he continued. “We are different somehow, by the Creator’s hand. In the balance of the Pattern, that difference requires a balance, so men favor two powers and women favor the other two, with the fifth split between us.” He paused before continuing. “That would mean that for every man with Air or Water as their strengths, there’s a woman to balance him.” How that worked for someone whose strength was Spirit, Phin couldn’t say. Perhaps, there was someone with spirit as their weakest.

The sun sat overhead as Phineas talked, and the warmth was welcome amidst the discussion. When he was finished talking, he lied down completely, feeling the coolness of the grass against his bare back. “This is all conjecture,” he added, lying on the ground. “But do you think that argument makes sense?” After finishing, he closed his eyes now that they were staring straight up into the sky and waited for the beautiful man next to him to reply.

Ayden
It was a downright struggle for Ayden to keep his brain functioning at a cognitive level after Phineas flexed, showing off his blacksmith’s build to accentuate the point he was making about different strengths between the genders. He was able to follow most of it, he felt like. It wasn’t terribly complex, but it was just a topic he didn’t spend much time on.

When Phineas laid down and closed his eyes, the beauty of it had Ayden holding his breath for a moment. Knowing the man’s eyes were closed, Ayden’s drank in every detail of the man’s form, hoping it might sate his desire, or at least put it off for the time being. He was wrong in that idea.

Ayden laid down right next to Phin, but on his side, propped up on an elbow instead of on his back like Phin. Light, he wanted to just lean in and kiss the man, conventions be damned. Instead, he managed to muster his self-control, a little bit anyway, and answered the man’s question. As he did so, he ran his fingers up Phineas’ forearm, playing lightly with the blond hairs running up towards his biceps.

“I’ll be honest, I didn’t really take in much after you started flexing,” he said as his hand traced up the forearm and onto his biceps, lightly enough that it should send tingles through Phin’s body, if it had the desired effect. “I don’t really think about it too much, to be honest. We each have the strengths and weaknesses we have. I’ll leave the rest to the Whites. I’m sure your argument is very sound though.” Ayden’s hand continued to explore and lightly touch the man’s body, intending to go from shoulder to chest unless he was stopped.
