Welcome to the Gardens: one of the most tranquil areas of the Tower Grounds. Birds sing in the trees which line the wide paths between beautiful flower beds and serene lakes. There are benches to sit and listen to the waterfall, and there is neatly trimmed grass to lie on and rest. Novices and Soldiers as well as Warders in Training can be seen, sweeping the stone paths as Accepted and Dedicated study from books and relax under leafy trees.

Throw the Wool Over Their Eyes (Attn: Avyra)

Post by Leala » March 27th, 2016, 6:46 pm

Torianin was glad that today turned out to be so sunny. Not a cloud in the sky, and it was just the right temperature, too. Although, maybe it could have been a tad warmer, and the cloudless sky was likely brought on by channelers using Cloud Dancing, but it was a nice day nonetheless. She walked out of her quarters with a small basket in her arms, full of various items for her student to practice with. She was going to be teaching Illusion to Avyra today. She wondered how the young woman would take to it. She nearly took her abilities with it a little too easily, but she knew that it was because she had a natural affinity to it. It made her glad that she could teach someone else about this as well.

She made her way to the Gardens and found a bench big enough to seat four people, and certainly big enough for her and her student. She went over her lesson plans in her head and revisited the lesson she had given the novice on her first class with the One Power. Certainly Avyra would have had more control training since their last meeting, though. As she waited for her student, she looked at the plants of varying sizes and thought of what she could use to begin the lesson with.

Avyra was slightly confused by their chosen meeting place, the gardens, but it was a nice day and she couldn't exactly complain. There seemed to always be nice weather here in the Tower, which she figured was from channeling. Maybe it was sort of cheating, but again, she hated bad weather and complaining would be totally idiotic.

She found Torianin on a bench with a basket of objects, and she smiled and sat down beside her. "Hello! Nice day out here," she greeted. She seemed peppier than usual, despite looking twice as tired as she had when she had shown up to the Tower.

A few days ago, she had discovered that she could, indeed, use Illusion without any formal training. She wasn't sure how to replicate it, though, or even what she had done. But she was aware of her abilities existing. Instantly she had gone to Mirin Sedai, who agreed to give her a private teacher, and she knew that Avyra and Torianin got along well.

Illusion had always interested Avyra, with her talent or not. Not only could it make her taller for a bit, always a plus, but it could also scare the Light out of anyone who wanted to hurt her. And pranks. She could always use it to prank those who got on her nerves. Or friends. What better way to show affection? Of course, such a thing would have to wait until she was an Accepted, where her channeling didn't have to be watched constantly.

"What's all this for?" she asked, picking out an object, a mug, from the basket.

Torianin happily greeted her student when she walked up to her. "Good afternoon, Avyra," she said as the girl sat next to her. "Yes, the weather is ideal today," she confirmed. The cloudlessness would come in hand later on in the lesson. The novice nearly immediately dove into her basket of items and took out a mug. Had she been an Aes Sedai, or even just a bit more strict, she would have reprimanded the girl for touching something obviously to do with the lesson without being given permission, but really...it was just a mug. And this was a class on Illusion, not creating Ter'angreal. "This..." she said, gently taking the mug into her own hands, then placing the weaves they would be practicing over it, "Will be part of our first lesson." She quickly finished the weave, and now the mug was a small, ornate pot with an ivy crawling within the soil, and spilling out of the rim.

"This is called Static Illusion," the Accepted explained. "Illusion that does not move." With that, she tied the weave off and passed the potted plant to Avyra. "You can still feel that this is a mug, but to someone not in the know, it looks like a potted plant. I've brought a number of things with me to practice with," she said, mentioning the basket. "Our first lesson will be to teach you the weave to change an object's appearance, and our goal for Static Illusion will be to create a book that simply isn't there." Reaching into the basket, she pulled out an apple. Now they both had something to practice with. "Before we begin, do you have any questions?"

Avyra nodded, watching as Torianin worked with the mug, forming it into a small potted plant. It was interesting, and she couldn't wait to begin.

The plant changed back into a mug, and Torianin passed it to her, taking out an apple for herself to work with. Avyra looked at the mug as Torianin explained her first task, making it into a book. It seemed very complex, but Avyra wasn't afraid of trying it out. "All right. I'm ready. What do I have to do?"

((OOC: It's okay. :) This class has a different structure than a class taught in a group. Just wanted to make sure all the bases were covered. ^^ ))

IC:

Torianin was glad when Avyra stated that she was ready to get into the lesson. "We'll start out with making the objects in our hands look different," she said. "The first part of the weave is a net of Air and Fire," she said as she slowly formed the net, having Air cross one way, then Fire cross another. "Use this to form the shape of the Illusion that you want. Try to make it about the size of the mug that you are holding for our first try." As she spoke, she shaped her net around the apple that she held. "Next, we'll take Spirit, and tie small knots of it to the joints of the net." Once the Spirit was in place, she continued. "Now, we have the general shape of what we want, we'll add texture and color. We'll do this with Earth and Water. Now, I have to tell you. This part is not an exact science, and it's likely different for every channeler. The Earth denotes the texture that you want, and the Water denotes the color. Keep in mind what you want the Illusion to look like as you channel."

The Accepted added the Water and Earth as she explained. When the weaves came together, Torianin had what looked like a small robin nestling in her hand. "I won't expect you to turn your mug into a bird on the first try. But, do make it at the very least look different."

Avyra blinked, watching Torianin explain the process for getting the bird. Well, this was going to be interesting, she knew. What did I get myself into this time?

But she paused, considering the Air and Fire, the two weaves she was most familiar with. A net, about the size of the mug? She embraced the Source, envisioning the weave of threads. An idle fear sat back in her mind; what if she set a fire? But she pushed that back.

Once the blanket of Fire and Air was complete, she moved onto Spirit, but got suck.

"On the Spirit, do I tie the weaves in the shape of the mug, or the shape of the illusion?" That was probably a stupid question.

Torianin watched as Avyra constructed her weave for the Illusion. Her student paused and asked whether she should weave the Spirit for the mug or the Illusion. She smiled patiently. "Place the knots on the net for the shape of the Illusion that you'd like to create," she said.

Avyra nodded, starting her weaves with Spirit, placing them so that it sort of looked like a book. She paused, moving a few around, tweaking it up. She wanted to get this right. Even if it was only a first try. However, the weave itself was startling easy for her to place, now that she knew what she was doing. She hardly needed any help in it.

Then she moved to Water and Earth, and she cringed a bit. Water was a hit or miss, and she had never been able to actually get Earth correct. But she worked on Water first, trying to invision a brown book. Then she moved to the texture, trying to find Earth, weaving it a bit.

"I think?" She looked at her work, finally; she had kept her eyes closed to focus.

Well, it wasn't the mug, but it wasn't a book either. It just looked like... a solid brick of brown. There was almost no texture, but at least the color had worked.

Torianin looked at the product of Avyra's weave. "You're on the right track," she said encouragingly. "You have the right shape down, and you have a different color than the mug, so that's good. See if you can change the texture of the Illusion to look more like a book. Remember, there's no right or wrong way for me to teach you this part. It's something that only you can do." To demonstrate, she dispelled her weave over the apple, and now the bird was a simple apple again.

Slowly, she wove a new net of Air and Fire, then placed knots of Spirit at the joints. Avyra seemed to have that part complete. Slowly, she added the Water and Earth, getting the feel for the texture and the color that she wanted. She finished the weave and tied it off, revealing a red book in place of the apple.

Avyra sighed, looking back at the illusion, which had disappeared from her hands, leaving a mug. "Okay. I've been having some trouble with Earth. A lot. Hm."

She paused, going through the motions again. She seemed to have most of the first step down, and even the water part. She paused, thinking out her weave. How could one touch Earth so easily? She thought back to her lessons in weaving Earth, but nothing came back to her.

You did this once! Its in you! Just like your channeling issues when you first got here!

She considered that, thinking back to her lessons. How she had manipulated the images Torianin had given her so that she could use the Power. Instead of a flower, it was a wild horse.

She felt for Earth, then opened her eyes. There was a book, not a mug on her lap. An actual book. "Hey!"
