Can i ward something?

Post by Dan » October 24th, 2014, 6:20 pm

Calder Selm
He really did not like coming to the channelling yards, not one bloody bit! Goat kissing fools tumbling around, causing accidents as nearly often as achieving success. It frankly gave him headaches, and was while things were already difficult, concentrating on the weaves of others while trying to improve himself was just far to distracting to get any real work done.

But knowing his issues, Landrin, that bloody Master of Soldiers, had made arrangements for Calder to study a subject he had often asked about. Trial by fire, something he could respect, it was still a bloody pain!

He would bloody learn how to stop arrows in their tracks, like that Asha'man had done!

He began pacing back and forth, keeping his eyes closed, rubbing his temples with his thumbs. He definitely was not in the mood to look up, the sun was far too bloody bright this morning. His head felt like it had, that one time drinking that Aiel garbage. "Bloody Gooskai…" He said, followed by a long string of swearing. He cringed, remembering that morning far too painfully clear.

One positive did come to mind, though. No more bloody One Power Basics. "If i have to deal with one more goat kissing former noble…" Landrin would have never agreed to have him learn something actually useful, if he had not grasped the basics. Then again, he had bluffed his way out of that class...
Jaryd Kosari
Jaryd lifted his eyebrows as he read the note that he has found under his door that morning. He was to report to the channeling yard to teach Calder how to Ward. Doesn't every soldier learn that right off the bat? He had thought the man more advanced than that. Or.... Perhaps he, too, had a Talent, and Landrin wanted Jaryd to pass on his knowledge. That was a comforting thought.

He whistled cheerfully as he dressed, still feeling a glow of pride as he positioned the sword pin in his collar. He had faced his fears and walked away alive- how many of the brutes in Ebou Dar could claim that? He went about his morning duties with a spring in his step. Chores -not so onerous now he wore the pin- and classes, morning meal, study time. Then finally it was time to meet Calder.

As he approached the channeling yard, he realized he had not seen his friend since his raising; did Calder even know it had happened? Did he know who his instructor was? Probably not- the Tower was not big on over-informing its students. This would be....amusing.

He strolled into the grounds and approached Calder; the man seemed disgruntled, but otherwise stood still. "Are you waiting for a friend or a tutor?" He asked casually.

"Teacher. Flaming goat herder is late."

Jaryd supposed it was inappropriate for a Dedicated to giggle like a little girl at a ribbon market. Instead he stuck his hands in his pockets and lounged against the fence. "Are you sure?" He asked with a wicked grin. "Soldier Calder, what do you know about Wards?"

The withering look Calder gave him was priceless.
Calder Selm
"What are you bloody wearing?" Calder said with disdain looking at his friend top to bottom. "Started to shop at the same shop as Seth, have you?" He said mockingly. He felt a sort of twisted pride for his friend. While Jaryd looked rediculous in his new outfit, the man deserved his new rank. Leaning forward, he said in a low tone "Because there is no way anyone would make you a Dedicated." Leaning back, he smiled warmly. "I mean, come on, you?" He adjusted his shirt, which was blatantly plain in comparison.

"Well, since i do not see any other goat kissing lecturers around, i guess you'll have to do this time." He offered, giving his friend a smirk. "Since you want to know about wards, let me teach you what they can do." He exclaimed! Facing the sun, he grandly announced "There were hundreds of black tip arrows, whistling through the bloody air! It sounded like a hundred angry weches hissing in hatred. No bloody way to flick them all with a gust of air, better luck running from the wenches! But this man, he faced the danger, he faced it…"

His voice grew soft, as his eyes grew dull. He remembered that day far to clearly. Perhaps he'll tell Jaryd about it, someday. "The weave was quickly spun, but i got the impression it was created like a dome. The arrows hit, every single one. We should have died, but clearly, I did not." He had made it out alive, with bitter memories he could not shake.

Striking a pose, the Tearian shook off the misery and exclaimed, "Your hero survived! All to bloody teach you about such a weave!" But his pose deflated, and he confessed ""But i have no bloody idea how he did it, or how it even worked. I just want… Need, to understand."
Jaryd Kosari
Jaryd's eyebrows went up further and further as Calder spoke. He had expected the lack of respect, but the blatant exaggeration seemed a bit much. He let the other man continue, however, since it seemed like something he needed to share. As Calder spoke, Jaryd silently made note of the important details until Calder finished with the admission that he had no idea what he was talking about, but wanted to know.

"Well, that could have been a Ward," Jaryd said immediately, ignoring the hyperbole to strike at the heart of the matter. "As a soldier I created a Ward that literally exploded if touched without the key. It seems possible that if I had used Air to hold arrows in place around that Ward, then tripped it, it would have sent those arrows flying at ridiculously high speeds in whatever direction I pointed them." And now, burn the man, he wanted to try. Another day, perhaps.

He looked his friend over thoughtfully. "Before you'll be able to understand the complexity of what you just described, you'll need to know a bit more about how Wards work, I think," he commented. "I discovered my Talent in the Black Tower, which meant I learned to do it in a manner totally different than most of those in the Grey. As annoying as it might be to be instructed by someone you used to get drunk with, I'm probably the best person you could have hoped for."

Calder scowled and muttered something that sounded a whole lot like a curse; Jaryd just laughed, and flipped a coin onto the ground. "Watch," he said. Then he seized saidin, reveling for a brief moment in the glory that was his. He wove Air, Spirit, and thin flows of Fire in a net that he placed in a dome over the coin. When he tied off the flows, the weave remained for Calder to examine.

"This is a fairly simple Ward with my own special 'zing'," Jaryd said. "Touching it may be unpleasant, but won't actually damage you," he added mischievously.
Calder Selm
"Whoa, Jaryd. Way too fast!" The Soldier exclaimed as he tried following the threads his friend was weaving. He could see air, spirit and fire woven. As he watched, he tried remembering every detail, trying to mimic the results. But seeing the end result of his work, he frowned and let the weave dissipate. "Far too fast." He muttered again.

"From the amount of fire…" He muttered, as he tried looking upon the weave. He knew his supposed gift did not quite work that way, but the least he could do was try. As sharp as his eyes were, he could make no sense of it. It seemed relatively harmless. Such a small amount of fire would only give such a ward a bit of a kick.

Looking upon his friend, his train of thought changed. Jaryd, knowing Calder enjoyed playing cards, was probably only bluffing himself. Who taught someone who occasionally struggled with Saidin a potentially dangerous weave?

"Your ward's only function is to alert if anyone steps through it." He said said, hoping he was correct. Turning around, he walked a few paces from his friend. But he then turned again, offered Jaryd a knowing wink, and took several rushed steps forward, punting the ward.

His ears were ringing, and his ankle was throbbing. He did not quite understand what was going on, but he did take a good look at the busty Accepted rushing over to check if he was alright. Why is the sky so bloody blue?

"What are you bloody saying?" He asked groggily, her voice sounding as if it came through a bathtub full of dirt thick water. "And why am i laying down?"

He vaguely wondered where Jaryd was, as his head spun slightly.

Jaryd Kosari
Calder had the right idea about the weave, but- “Light!” Jaryd yelped as Calder hauled back and kicked the coin as hard as he could. Well, tried to kick it. As his foot connected with the Ward, the defensive bit triggered, far more explosively than Jaryd had yet seen. The clang in his head was deafening.

Calders flew for a few short seconds, then landed on his back a few paces back. The Accepted on safety duty hiked her skirts and ran over, kneeling on the ground next to his friend as her hands caressed his head. Jaryd felt the familiar tingle on his skin as she asked if Calder was okay. By the response, he was- Jaryd relaxed.

“Next time, take more care,” he said, but his eyes twinkled as he reached down and gave Calder a hand up. “That could have killed you,” he added seriously. “That Ward was set to trigger with exactly the degree of force used against it. I wasn’t expecting you to drop kick the bloody thing!” He shook his head. “If you’d just touched it, it would have given you a bit of a shock.”

He paused, contemplating how to continue. “Let’s…try something a little more basic,” he said finally. “This is a Ward against eavesdropping,” he explained as he channeled, this time infinitely slower than his first demonstration. Air and Spirit flowed together into a span-wide dome that he placed an arms-length away. “When you are inside, no one can hear you.” He took a step, until he stood within its boundaries. “For instance, your mother is a camel.” Calder gave him a blank look, and he grinned as he returned to his former place.

“I’ll leave the weaves up so you can study them if you need to. See if you can replicate them.”

Calder Selm
He stood on wobbly feet, putting more weight on his left leg than his right. He felt like a bloody fool! He kept silently berating himself, asking why he had thought that would have been a good idea to do. His left ankle felt numb, thankfully not broken! But he was hurt regardless. Bloody Accepted could have healed him…

Focusing on his own issues, he nearly missed what Jaryd was saying. He caught "against eavesdropping," The man began weaving. He listened to his friend carefully, not in the mood to mess around anymore. He heard, and he watched carefully. "Air, spirit, arms length, gotcha." He said in a hasty response. His instructor took a step back, and smirked. He was no good at reading lips, but he wondered as to why his friend was talking about a camel's mother. He offered the man a confused look.

“I’ll leave the weaves up so you can study them if you need to. See if you can replicate them.” Jaryd said.

Once it was his turn, he wove air and spirit together. Judging by how close Jaryd had been, he guessed the ward did not require much room to spare. How dould have known if he had been within the weave, he was sure. There was not much residue left from Jaryd's weave, so he guessed the threads did not need to be overly thick either.

His finished product was a few feet in span. It was by far not as refined as Jaryd's weaving, but it would suffice. Feeling confident about his work, he turned his back to Jaryd, and stepped within his newly woven ward. "What's a bloody camel anyway?" He asked no one in particular. Standing within his ward, he kept examining his work, worrying about having done it properly. His head turned from left, to right.

He eventually faced the other man, hoping he had not heard his question.

Jaryd Kosari
Jaryd observed quietly as Calder channeled, watching as he pulled the flows together in imitation of his own. He took his time, but even still worked faster than many others would have. When he finished, he turned and walked straight into the Ward without waiting for a go ahead.

You would think he would learn. Jaryd thought with amused tolerance. He could see the solder’s jaw working but no sound, so clearly the weave had worked. He waited for Calder to drop the weave and turn, then smiled. “Excellent work,” he said approvingly. “With practice you may be able to expand and contract that weave to whatever dimensions you like. Just be aware that the Aes Sedai and Asha’man take a rather dim view of the learning ranks using that weave outside of the classroom,” he cautioned, though he had a feeling his warning would go unheeded.

“That was a Ward that protects you from being listened to. I don’t know if you had a chance to see, but it had the same basic structure as the weave that sent you flying with the birdies a few minutes ago. Any Ward that protects an area from an outside influence will have the same base. You just…tweak it…to make it do what you want.”

He channeled. This time he created a Ward against Eavesdropping that spanned a much smaller area, and tied it off so it would stay visible to his student. Then he channeled again, the flows of Air, Spirit, and Fire slipping through his fingers at a slow, steady pace so Calder could watch.

“This is a Ward against intrusion,” he said as he worked. “This Ward is what most channelers use to protect their chambers here, or their personal effects when traveling. It is very similar to the first weave I showed you, but without the sting.” He grinned.

“Take a look. Tell me if you can see their similarities and differences. Can you see what I did differently to define what each one does? You’re welcome to repeat both, if you want practice.”

Calder Selm
Calder threaded the strands together. He wove spirit for the base, fire to power the weave, and air to fuel the fire. He was probably wrong with his theory about the weave, but he went with the idea anyway! They all fit together fairly well. "The way the weave is put together, while it's much like that other ward, it's also different." He observed.

He tied his weave and set it, much like Jaryd had. He took his time and examined both, trying to see if he had made any mistakes. He had basic the pattern right, but he got the impression that Jaryd's fit together more evenly. "Air and fire blend much better with yours." He confessed.

He untied his own and let the ward fade away. Calder then repeated the weave, spirit, fire, air. He adjusted the strength of fire, and balanced it with air. Both meshed well with the base of spirit. "You're right, this ward is like the bastard cousin of the eavesdropping ward." The Soldier said, as he examined his handiwork.

"Not bad, if i do bloody say so." He said. "But what exactly does it do?" He felt as if he should know exactly what it would do, he had woven it properly, or so he believed. But after his idiocy earlier, he was not confident with his luck today. "Wait, Jaryd, i think i was wrong." He blurted out.

"Bloody stops you from touching it." He said, as he pressed his hand against Jaryd's ward.

Jaryd Kosari
"Bloody stops you from touching it," Calder announced, trying to push past the Ward the Dedicated had created.

"You would think you'd learn not to do that," Jaryd commented dryly. "At least this time it isn't trapped." He half-grinned. "You're partially right. It isn't actually a physical barrier, however. What you are experiencing is actually the Ward pushing back against you. The pressure it exerts can be overcome, depending on your own resilience and the skill of the person who wove the Ward."

He reached out and touched his finger to Calder's Ward, then pushed with all his strength. His finger moved through the Ward at a barely perceptible rate. He wiggled them to demonstrate his point, then pulled them back.

"A Ward to keep things in is keyed to the conditions you set it. Once set, it will repel anything that matches those keys. Theoretically I could create a Ward that repels half-drunken red-headed soldiers with an attitude if I could figure out how to make the One Power recognize those attributes." He grinned at the soldier. "More common keys include shadowspawn, humans in general, channelers, vermin, vision, and hearing."

He paused, pulling a hunk of bread out of his pocket and splitting it in two. "There is another type of Ward, however." He channeled again, this time laying flows of Spirit, Earth, and Air around the first bit of bread in a tight net that he tied off neatly.

"This is called a Keeping. It is actually a Ward, but it confuses some people because it's inverted. Instead of keeping a keyed thing OUT, you're actually keeping the essence of the Warded object IN." He turned the bread in his hands. "As long as this weave remains intact, this bread will remain as fresh as the day it was baked."

He took a breath. Light, he hadn't intended to babble on for so long, but there was so much to tell! "You saw how warding against eavesdropping and intruding were very similar. Can you think of any Wards similar to Keeping in the same fashion?" He tossed the unWarded piece of bread to Calder.

"Your turn."
OOC: Jaryd's piece of bread is still Warded so Calder can copy it.

Calder Selm
Catching the bread, he smirked at his friend and took a small bite. As he chewed, he smiled, the loaf was fresh, and tasted delicious. The bread was so fresh, it felt as if it melted on his tongue. He was tempted to take another bite, but a withering look from his friend crushed the temptation. He tossed the bread from his left, to his right hand, then from right to his left.

He grasped Saidin, finding some satisfaction at how it was easier now to take hold. Another little detail that made his return from his sojourn worthwhile. He slowly wove spirit, followed by earth, and lastly air. He intertwined the threads carefully, mimicking Jaryd's thread as closely as he could. The process was slow, but he kept a decent pace. Looking at Jaryd's portion of bread, Calder could almost see the way the threads were put together. He felt confident that he could closely match the wards his friend taught him, but he knew there was no way he could match the man's superior speed and dexterity.

"Not only are you as soft as a woman's bosom, you weave like a woman too!" He teased, with a warm smile on his face. It was good that it was a friend teaching him, and not some boring aspirant to the White or Brown Ajah. He felt good about his ward, the bread should keep fresh for as long as the ward held.

"Jaryd, is there a ward to keep tea hot and fresh?" He asked, his tone carrying genuine curiosity. "I can't see the keeping ward working the same for liquid." He thought a bit about the problem, perhaps the solution was not keeping the liquid warm. "You keep the cup warm!" He exclaimed, before the other man could respond.

"But wait, you'd need to keep the cup hot, and have it hold that temperature." he added, ranting to himself. He let the keeping ward on the bread fade away, and took another bite. He smirked at his friend's irritation.

Jaryd Kosari Jaryd rolled his eyes at his friend's insults. He would find a way to get back at hime, somehow. Apparently their differing ranks did not sit well with Calder. He did consider the question, however.

"I had not thought about it," he admitted. It was an interesting question. WAS there a way to maintain freshness and temperature? Surely if a Ward could keep a living object like a flower in a state of eternal stasis, it could maintain temperature?

He abandoned Calder to walk to where the healerse stood. "Do you have a cup, or a bowl of some sort, that I could borrow?" He asked. They glanced at each other, and then an Accepted with brown eyes handed him a copper bowl. He took it with a bow, and returned to his friend.

He channeled, filling the bowl with water, and heating it until it steamed. Then he set it carefully on the fence post, and considered his options. First he wove a Keeping, the flows of Spirit and Air dancing like children at a Bel Tine celebration as they wrapped around the bowl. He altered it then, flows of Fire and Earth instinctively knotting around the basic weave.

When he tied the flows off, the liquid in the bowl took on an odd appearance....like ice, almost, and no steam rose from its surface. When he touched it, he burned his finger. "Ouch!" he exclaimed. Calder laughed, and Jaryd cursed at him, uncaring for the dignity his new rank required. Of course the red hed just laughed more, and Jaryd's imprecations dropped to an inaudible level.

He channeled again, this time removing all the heat from the air around the bowl, and directing it into the stone they stood near. Icicles formed on the fence post, and the cold radiated out to hit their faces. He held it like that for several long moments, ignoring Calder's pointed jibes, then released. "If the weave worked, the water should still be hot," he said.

To his delight, it was. He grinned, tossing the bowl back and forth in his hands, the hot-solid water unmoving in its container. He set it back on the post, and cut the weaves.

The bowl exploded in a flurry of steam and molten copper.

"Mother's milk in a cup!" Jaryd yelped, throwing himself backward. Calder laughed even harder, wiping tears of mirth from his eyes.

After he had collected himself -and after Calder had stopped laughing- Jaryd commented dryly, "clearly that weave still needs some work." Abruptly the humor of the situation hit him, and he broke into peels of laughter, his attempts at dignity entirely forgotten.

---

OOC: You have six posts, which means this thread is good for a point in Warding. I would like to time jump to a time when Jaryd is M'hael if you want to try for more. I can't play Jaryd as Dedicated anymore, it's too weird.
