Why Can't I Sleep (Wolfkin Fanfic)

It was the randomness. That's what it was… that's what drove him to distraction every day. It wasn't the martial training, he loved that. If he could, he would live in the training grounds. The training grounds made him the happiest he could be outside of having a woman present and he was starting to consider if he would trade time with a woman for more training time. Nobody mocked him for his training, or treated the axe as a lesser weapon. The training grounds were the one place he felt normal.
It was everything else that made him feel like something other. Images of grey fur and the flash of teeth. Burying himself in his training didn't help. He'd already pushed curfew in order to run to make himself so tired he just went to sleep, but none of that helped him. Everytime he tried to sleep he kept dreaming about wolves and no one could explain it to him. Before the Grey Tower, nothing but normal dreams. Halfway into his journey to the Grey Tower all he could dream about was wolves and teeth and hunting fresh meat.
He thought it had been an affect of his house's sigil; a wolf, teeth bared as if in defense of his pack. Surely that's what was causing him distress. Mental flights of fancy combined with him missing his family. There would be no other reason for him to constantly have wolves on the brain.
Cole flopped down onto the ground with a groan, scrubbing his hands through his dark curly hair. As he sat there trying to get the thoughts of wolves out of his mind, he knocked his head against a bench, growling loudly in his frustration. He didn't know who he could trust to even try to talk about what he was experiencing in his dreams. The last thing he needed was some random Aes Sedai or Asha'man deciding he needed to be studied or even that he might be a Darkfriend because of his dreams.
Sighing heavily, Cole shoved his way back to his feet. He wasn't going to get any sleep this way. Running around the Training Grounds in the evening wasn't going to help him get any sleep, and running things through his brain wasn't helping to settle him down to sleep.
He'd tried the Libraries earlier but without even an inkling of where to start looking Cole was stuck in a hopeless circumstance. Not even having a place to start stuck him in an impossible situation that he didn't know how to get out of.
Thankfully it was later at night. Not late enough to trigger curfew, but luckily there weren't any more chores at night. He couldn't sleep, so he might as well train. Relentlessly, Cole attacked the dummy, his training axes whistling in the air. He felt off balance with nothing in his other hand, but the buckler didn't feel right. It interrupted his flow.
Only once sweat was dripping down him did he relent, growling as he slid the training axe back into its place. There was only one thing left for him to do. He'd avoided it for so long because he didn't want to come across as the trainee who whined all the time. Regardless, it was time he sought help and his Gaidin mentor what was going on. Hopefully Haeden Gaiden would have answers, or at least be able to point him in the right direction.
It would be nice to get some answers, even if it just meant the wolves in his dreams made sense. Also why he'd startled growling more, that wasn't a thing before he got here. His Mother would have smacked his backside with a spoon if she heard him growling like this, though he was sure his sister would egg him on. Half their games as kids were him being a monster coming to get her, and she'd run screaming through the house as he chased her. A small smile graced his lips at the happy memory and he leveraged himself to his feet, intending on finding either his mentor or his bed, whichever came first.
