"I can read and write," said Illa, but then added: "If I have to. I'm a little better with numbers. Um. I know a little about fighting with knives, and a little about fighting without anything. All I know about horses is that they're expensive and messy and they kick. I know how to run and how to climb. I--" She swallowed. Should she admit this part? But... Dealer's side of the deck, she thought again, and went for it. "I know how to move through a crowd without being seen, and how to surprise somebody. I know how to fall without getting hurt." She looked at the older woman very deliberately for just a moment, then added: "That sort of thing. You know."

Nat smirked slightly. "Yes, I do know. I came to the Grey Tower with several of the same skills." She didn't expound on that at all, since it wasn't the sort of thing she ran around telling new recruits, but she figured it was enough to make it clear that she did understand.

"Let's get you into some quarters," she said, rising from behind her desk and walking to the door. She opened the door and looked out for a runner and saw...

...no one.

Natlya pursed her lips, looking from side to side without seeing the usual young ones hanging around. Maybe they were escorting that man who came with Illanova. Ah well. "Looks like I'll be showing you myself," she said, leaning back into the room. "So, might as well come along. I can at least get you to a room."

She waited until the young woman followed her before saying, "So, do you have any questions for me?"

"Did you know how to fight when you came here?" Illa asked immediately. It wasn't a panic answer; she genuinely wanted to know. If the woman before her could rise to this position without any prior knowledge or skills, then Illa flaming well could too. It might be difficult, it might be painful, but Illa had never shied away from learning new things. Or from taking risks, if they seemed worthwhile. She had her wits, and good physical conditioning, and a willingness to try and keep trying until she understood; if that was all it took, well...

I can do this, she thought, and Birno was right.

That was not among the questions she had been expecting, but it wasn't a total shock either. It was something that new trainees were curious about sometimes, especially those who didn't come in with previous training. People often wondered what to expect from such a totally new situation.

"I didn't have any sort of formal weapons or combat training," Natlya responded after a moment. "I knew how to take care of myself, how to get away and how to use a knife or whatever was at hand to protect myself, but it was all in that very haphazard, just for survival and improvised sort of way. I learned how to be an actual warrior here at the Tower.

"I imagine my level of experience coming here was probably comparable to how you described your own," she finished with a faint, sidelong smile at the other woman. "We've had new trainees with even less experience than that and those who came in after time in city guards, so you'll find the spectrum here but we provide some of the best training in the world no matter your starting point. You just have to be determined to make the most of it."

I'm going to need a lot of training. I'm going to need so much training... "What can you tell me about the Bond?" asked Illanova. "I mean, I've heard that Aes Sedai and their warders have this... connection. Is it only Aes Sedai? Or do the Asha'man take Warders, too? And what exactly does it do?" She hesitated, then added: "I understand if maybe you can't tell me everything right now."

Of all her reservations about becoming a warder -- fighting in battle, possibly getting eaten by trollocs, having to actually ride a horse -- this was the big one. The idea of surrendering part of her freedom, of pledging to defend and obey someone else, was uncomfortable bordering on terrifying. Still, she told herself, Warders went through with it so there must be some value to it. She just wanted more details. Knowing the details was absolutely essential to planning.

Another less-than-shocking question, but Natalie was good with that. She wasn't really one who liked surprises.

"Well, first off, it's not forced on anyone," she began. "Every channeler and warder make that agreement of their own free will." And for those times when that wasn't the case, there were serious consequences for the channeler...but she kept that to herself. "Aes Sedai and Asha'man are both able to bond. Sometimes, they bond each other. Most often, it's a Gaidin.

"Some Gaidin do not bond, however," she continued. "They may remain unattached and serve whoever is most in need of a defender at a given time, and different Gaidin have different strengths. I myself am the Gaidin Captain, only filling in as the Mistress of Training temporarily. In my role, I am the leader of the unbonded Gaidin."

She paused, considering. "There's a lot about the bond that you'll learn over time, since this short walk won't quite let me get into all the nuances, but a bonded warder will have better stamina and then a connection to their channeler to know where they are and how far, their health and feelings. It is to help create a cohesive unit that can achieve more than they could alone."

That didn't sound so bad, and most likely she'd learn more over time. It's going to take some real effort, she reminded herself. There was so much she didn't know, and she would have to buckle down and learn it all. No cheating; no shortcuts. She thought for a few moments, but couldn't think of any more questions.

She was still thinking when the Gaidin Captain stopped at a simple, unmarked wooden door.
