There had been many a surprise so far in this little endeavor of hers, and yet here was another to add to the stack.

Miahala turned her eyes from the books to the Brown, listening closely to what he was saying. This book had been updated just in the past three years, which for the Turning of the Wheel and the age of the Grey Tower, this was next to nothing at all. If there were older versions of it that could be found, maybe something would stand out to explain why it was taken in the first place...

"Why not?" she said after a moment. "I've nothing better to do today than chase off after potentially-treacherous Browns to dark, cold archives where I might find why someone is after my line. Again." (Really, she had lost track of how many times people had come after her, her family, her children... They often ended up as splatter art, so why keep trying?)

She flipped her braid back over her shoulder. "Is it pushing too far into more secrets of the Brown Ajah to ask if any special preparations need be made?"

Murdock supposed he was probably a treacherous Brown by Miahala's standards, but he wasn't going to bring that up. No, he liked his insides to stay on his inside, and there was something to be said for making someone like her a staunch ally. Maybe that was a bit of a hopeful term, she possibly tolerated him at best, but Murdock was sure he could use the relationship to his advantage at some point in the future if he really had to.

Admittedly though, the Healer slash Render felt little ambition, something the Head of the Black Ajah found most frustrating, but he was in a rather good, secure position and competent enough that he could hold his own and service the Great Lord of the Dark, etc. etc., however he could.

After all, Murdock reasoned as he picked up the book and held it in his right hand, he wasn't that bad. Just as some Light-fearing folk were pretty shitty people, he was a pretty shitty Black. He was banking on the Last Battle being over before he died so he didn't have to handle that whole service to the Dark One stuff.

"No special preparations; you can't see my weaves, so there's nothing to be concerned about there." Murdock gave a toothy smile, "yourself and your weaves is all we need."

The Brown/Black gestured to the space before them with his stick, indicating he would make the Gateway there. "When we are through, let me lead the way. There are some wards and weaves powered by a ter'angreal that only a Brown can placate. It's quite fascinating really, the depths to which we guard these things 'Just In Case'. But it works in your favour here so let's be about it."

---

One Skimming platform later (Murdock's was as Miahala may remember, plain and smooth with two stone benches), they were standing in the middle of a scenic opening in the woods. A stone path wound between the trees, which Murdock limped along with Miahala close behind. The wind carried the smell of pine and snow, a pleasant experience overall. Thankfully it was only a short walk to what looked to be a rather unimpressive stone door, almost like a Waygate. Murdock grinned at the sight and put his hand on the smooth stone just above a recession. Inside was the ter'angreal. The Brown only realised in this moment that there was an additional safeguard here...

"Blood and ashes," he muttered. He should have thought of this. He turned to Mia, "the ter'angreal needs both Saidin and Saidar in order to deactivate it. I can lead a circle if you are amenable, but these are weaves you must keep strictly to yourself." He didn't know what damage the Green could do with them but the Brown respected his Ajah's secrets and did not like the idea of sharing them on a whim. It was clear on his face that he wasn't pleased at the situation, but surely Mia could appreciate his apprehension.

There was some part of Miahala that was inwardly amused at Murdock's vexation, although she could not, for the life of her, figure out why that was. She didn't really spend any large amount of time trying to figure it out however, since it really didn't matter. The feeling, much like the situation, simply was what it was.

"I'll keep it a secret," she said with her fairly natural assured attitude. (Some might call her arrogant, but to her mind, she had earned the right to use it.)

Nothing else needed to be said, and she simply followed the Brown's lead through leading a circle and then creating the weaves that would open this mysterious Vault of Knowledge. The weave itself was fascinating in its way, since each Ajah seemed to have their own way about their own processes, but she wouldn't bother to keep it in mind for the future.

Secrets that were not remembered in the first place were best kept, after all.

Once it was done, they let go of their minor connection--since really, neither of them liked such things--and the unassuming stone door parted before them. The scent on the wind that had been just a faint trace now strengthened as she summoned a small ball of light that illuminated a long stone staircase that led down into darkness.

That seemed like the only option for where to go, so down they went.
* * * It seemed to take quite a while to get down the stairs, although they were not unreasonably long. They just didn't move too fast, being as they were. (Or, really, Murdock's limp being as it was. But Mia didn't begrudge him that and while she wanted to know what information lay at the end, she knew it wasn't going anywhere.)

Once they reached the bottom, there was a large wooden door. Equally as innocent-seeming as the stone above, but Mia did not go through it. "Any more surprises here?" she asked with a sidelong glance at her current companion in the dim light.
