The Secret Untold (Attn: Hannah)

Post by Craig » December 31st, 2016, 4:20 am

Zarayne
Zarayne wrung her hands. Thus far, she'd been able to avoid going north of the Tower. Most of her chores settled around the Grey Tower itself, and occasionally extended to the Gardens in the west. At this hour, she was running errands for various people. After delivering one note to the Infirmary, a tall Asha'man handed her a sealed letter. The name on the outside read 'Ria', but his verbal command was to hand it to the Mistress of Arms. She stared up into his pale grey eyes in a stunned silence, before finally nodding and leaving the infirmary. Her feet took her around to the Ajah quarters before she realised that, finally, she would have to approach the Warder Yards.

Her fingers twisted in consternation. She had very intentionally avoided getting near to any of the Gaidin for the fear of discovery. Over a month at the Tower, and none yet knew her relationship to one of their number. It wasn't a secret she wanted to divulge neither. After all, the man had abandoned her mother before her birth. He wasn't fit to be a husband, and thus he should be denied the opportunity to be a father. Not that she needed one, quite clearly. She hadn't woken from the Dream yet, and that wasn't thanks to his counsel.

The well-trodden path between the Grey Tower and the Yards was a short distance, yet it seemed to drag on forever. The four storey building seemed more imposing than the glass bastion behind her. The sounds of fighting began to fill the air, and soon enough the Gaidin came into sight. Men and women danced in three large clearings, wielding a variety of weapons both familiar and not. Most were clad in the greys that symbolised Drin and Ji'val, just as her own dresses marked her as an Aes Sedai's apprentice. Those that did not were hard to see, like mirages or mist-ghosts. Her eyes couldn't follow them, and she had to force herself to look away before her vision made her dizzy.

A glint of gold caught the novice's eye just as she got to the southern clearing. At the far end by the Warder Hall, one of the warriors danced alone. He held a sword in each hand and danced with a grace that was breathtaking. Not that it was his skill with the swords that caught the breath in her lungs. He was topless, and on his right arm there glittered a gold and red shape. Even without memories of the Waste, she knew the mark of a Clan Chief when she saw it. Her mind leaped to a singular thought without conscious effort.

Father?

In the next instant, Zarayne shrieked in a truly horrific wetlander fashion. She spun around wide-eyed and with balled fists, as the hand that had briefly touched her shoulder retracted back towards a fellow novice. Zarayne's lips moved soundlessly as she took in dark skin and dark hair and dark eyes; almost the complete opposite of her previous person of interest.

"What?" she got out finally in a breathy pant. "I did nothing! I'm doing nothing!" She could hear the panic in her voice. I am afraid, she thought. She cast her eyes towards the other novice's feet. I have shamed myself.

Eveayla "Well there's certainly nothing to scream about," Eveayla said disgustedly, making a face. "I only was going to let you know that you can't go out there while they're practicing. I was told already and intended to save you the trouble, but, by all means, go ahead. Get yourself stabbed."

She sat down on a nearby bench in a huff, scooting over to make room for the strange novice, if the girl chose to join her. Fascinating one, really -- she would have pegged the girl as Aiel, except for the pale skin. Maybe part Aiel? She tried to imagine her in the same clothes from the illustrations in her History of the Waste class from the morning. It could work. Except that Aiel were stoic and didn't just go around jumping when someone caught them.

"What are you sneaking about for, anyway? It looks like you've a letter to deliver. I'm here taking notes -- Sorine Sedai said that identifying potential in Gaidin begins with observation, and I certainly don't intend to go around without a Warder, especially since we aren't to use the power as a weapon." She nodded towards a particularly handsome man with rippling muscles and an odd marking on his arm. Too old for her, to be sure, but it didn't hurt to look, did it? "So I'm here to observe," she drawled suggestively, smirking.

Zarayne
Zarayne's gaze shifted from her feet to her hands as the other novice mentioned the letter. The slip of white paper was all scrunched up in her balled hands. She pressed the note against her stomach, attempting to flatten it out against her dress. The creases didn't seem to go away, and Zarayne silently cursed her lack of focus. She didn't even think about what the recipient was going to make of it. The Mistress of Arms' punishment came second to the shame over her own concerns.

The Aiel stopped herself from following the other woman's gaze back towards the golden tattoo and the man who bore it. She had seen enough. Potentially too much. Her mind was trying to form unbidden pictures of him alongside her mother. Zarayne focused instead on the dark wetlander. She had a soft face and soft features. Nothing like the Shienarans she had grown up with. Zarayne identified the open space on the bench as an invitation, and sat down quickly. Her eyes refused to look back towards the Gaidin and their trainees.

"I don't know Sorine Sedai." The name seemed unfamiliar, but then most names did. All she could say was that it wasn't Aiel nor Shienaran, but the rest of the wetland cultures were an amorphous jumble. "Are Gaidin not all just Gaidin?" It didn't seem too ridiculous a question. The Aes Sedai, for all of their differences in appearance, all affected a certain air about them. And the same was true of the Asha'man. Even Accepted and Dedicated seemed to have more similarities with one another than differences. It was some sort of adaptation to the culture of the Grey Tower, which seems to enforce conformity instead of nurturing differences. Well, that was Zarayne's observation thus far.

Well, at least she was sitting down now. It was disconcerting, really, to have someone that jumpy staring down at you.

"I'm not honestly very sure myself," Eveayla said, eyes still focused on the Warders as they moved. "I think there's a different name for women who are Warders? I know the ones who are like us - like Novices and Soldiers - are called Drin. I'm sure there's a second level, akin to Accepted, but I don't know what it's called. I've not met very many of them as of yet."

Her dark eyes turned back to Zarayne. "Where are you from? The way you speak is... different." Clipped, even, as if the girl was having trouble finding some of the words. "I feel like everyone here knows more than I do in regards to what things are called. Have you been here long?"

Zarayne
"I've not been here long," admitted Zarayne. She curled her toes inside the useless pair of slippers all novices were forced to wear. "Just a month or two." She wanted to feel the solid earth beneath her feet.

Where am I from? Zee knew the answer to that question of course - born in the Three-fold Land at the hold of the Chumai sept -- but she didn't immediately answer. Her eyes returned to the man at the far end of the Yards and his distinguishing tattoo. She was anxious about watching him, as if he would be able to feel her eyes upon him. Would he turn to see her and know who she was? Or would he stare right through her, and ignore her as he had for the last twenty-one years? Zarayne was aware that the other novice was waiting on a reply, but now that she was looking, she couldn't pull her eyes free.

"S-Shienar." She stumbled over the name, as if unfamiliar with the sounds needed to make the word. "I was born in the Three-fold Land, but raised by my mother in Shienar. That is where..." The Aiel's voice died as the Gaidin she watched seemed to turn in their direction. They were at too great a distance to see where he was looking, but it was enough to make her heart thump in anxiety. The pulsing beat in her chest was the only thing she heard for several long moments, before he turned away again. Only then could see pull her gaze free.

"I am Aiel," Zarayne corrected. "And my name is Zarayne."

So, she was Aiel then. Interesting. Very, very interesting. Eveayla had never met an Aiel, but had heard enough about the war and how ferocious they were as fighters. Somehow, this girl didn't really live up to that reputation. She seemed.... out of place, somehow. It could just be the novice dress. And she kept looking at that one Warder practicing, the one with the strange designs on his arms.

"Do you... do you know him or something?" She gestured towards the man. "You seem like you do. Is he who your message is for? If you're afraid, I'll take it to him for you," she said, holding out her hand. "Men are generally pretty harmless, there's no point in being scared of them."

Back home, women were in charge of everything. Mostly, Eveayla assumed, because men were positively useless in so many situations.

Zarayne
Jade-green eyes darted from the novice to Ravak Darrow and a rising heat began in her cheeks.

"I..."

She struggled to think of something to say. Intentionally telling mistruths was a thing that wetlanders did, but not the Aiel. Not her. She needed an reply that sidestepped the true answer.

The scarlet in her cheeks was building.

"Yes." The admission came out as a strangled cry, like a cat being caught in surprise. Her slippered feet kicked against the ground in frustration at not being smarter. She looked into her lap, and she had once against scrunched up the letter in her hands. The Mistress of Arms was going to be furious at her, yet that fear still paled against her own shame.

Zarayne felt the wetlander's eyes on her. That had a different meaning west of the Dragon Wall. Here it meant there was an expectation to continue talking. Back home, it would have meant an ambush.

"He is someone I know." Maybe that was assuage the other novice's curiosity, and they could return to the topic of... anything else but him.

Eveayla's left eyebrow raised slightly, but she didn't push it further, instead turning her face towards the practicing yard and away from her fellow Novice. Odd bird, that one. Her eyes scanned the group for familiar faces - Johan, or even that swaggering girl, Pax. One of the drin caught her eye and gave her a toothy grin, obviously quite at home wearing his breeches and no shirt. Of course, those muscles did look more defined with the slight sheen on them. She bit her lip and smiled coyly back, hovering her pen above the parchment to write invisible notes.

She glanced back over at Zarayne. Obviously still a bit distraught - still as a loom with broken treadles.

"You should just deliver it. Just march over there and be done with it, and it will be over, and then you can get on with your life," she urged, nodding towards the man with the strange markings. "They'll hardly notice, you know. I tried to speak to a few of them after a practice session and it's like they've all been sniffing dyes for hours." She fluttered a hand near her head to illustrate the fleeing of a drin's brain from body.

"You could even do it all angry-like," she said, grinning. "That way they'll be truly confused."

Zarayne
Deliver the letter to him? If anyone was truly confused, it was Zarayne. Why would she deliver the letter to--

"Oh no, the letter isn't for him," corrected Zarayne. But he's between me and the door to the Warder Hall, and that thought only brought more colour to her already radiant cheeks. Aiel were brave enough to go anywhere, even into the soft wetlands, so there was no exercise for her inaction. That thought didn't change the fact that Zarayne was scared though, and she would have sought out a white dress there and then if she wasn't already stuffed in one.

She took the balled-up letter and thrust it into the other novice's hands. "Maybe you can deliver it for me." Zee gave the wetlander a wretched, pleading look. "Please? I'll find a way to repay you, somehow?"
