Unsettled [Attn: Leanora]

(To read the backstory for this one, check out Evvy's bio. I'm starting here with her beginning at the Tower.)

Eveayla smoothed her fingers over the white woolen dress, judging the material. It was good enough wool, fine, even, but white was hardly a color she wore often. It had the horrible side effect of making her look peaked. No embroidery or lace on it, either. How droll.

The Mistress of Novices had been decidedly unhelpful in returning her to Far Madding. Like the Aes Sedai in Murandy, she had stated that it was a simple fact -- girls who could channel might eventually do so on their own, even if they never intended to leave Far Madding and the Guardian's shelter again, and therefore Eveayla should stay at the Grey Tower until she could either be determined in control of her ability or proved to have such a small one that it wouldn't matter either way. Envoys sent to Eveayla's parents hadn't been helpful, either. Her mother was gracious towards the Tower, hoping for increased custom from the Aes Sedai (and potentially Hama Valon's seamstresses.) Her father had even (cheekily!) been allowed to write something at the bottom about it making her a better person. Unlikely. She was good enough already.

So now, here she stood, in the corridor outside the Mistress of Novices, waiting for an Accepted to come show her to her new quarters and have her meet her roommate. Hopefully whoever it was would be worth speaking to, like Sabine. She thought longingly of the past few weeks traveling with her friend, and wondered if Sabine had reached Andor by now.

Leanora Simir
One thing Leanora had learned since she came to the Grey Tower was that the training program for both White Tower and Grey was shockingly similar, and thus she made herself at home quite easily. She developed her own learning curriculum spanning a wide variety of channeling and traditional topics. She took silent delight in astonishing her instructors with her strength while publicly turning an abashed cheek to their praise. Of course she did well; it wasn’t as if the White Tower were a hovel in the mud!

Of course, not all her duties were so self-satisfying. She taught classes, gave lectures, and supervised chore rotations, comforted crying women in white, old enough to be her mother, and assured them they would see their homes again soon. It was a lie, but it helped to soothe tears before she grew too openly impatient to tolerate them. She hid her frustration well behind a pretty face and a quirk of sassy lips, and went about her duties exactly as an Accepted should. Someday they would deem her worthy of the shawl, and then- oh, then! The thought filled her with distinctly unseemly glee.

On one day like any other, her preoccupied thoughts carried her through hours of serving as Vanya Sedai’s personal assistant. She shuttled women into the Yellow’s office, scratched their names off the waiting list, then escorted them to their respective destinations once their interviews were over. Most went back to the Tower gates, but some few did actually have the ability to channel.

One such was a dark-skinned, curly-haired girl with a pert nose who emerged from the Mistress of Novice’s office in a new white dress looking perplexed and perhaps a little dissatisfied. She had the look of Arad Doman about her, and Lea suppressed a sniff of disdain. Domani were not particularly well-favored in Tarabon, but she had learned early on that carrying that grudge into Tower life brought her nothing but wrinkled fingers and aching knees.

“Light shine on you child,” she said calmly as she approached the girl. “I am Accepted Leanora. I am to understand your name is Eveayla?” The girl nodded, reaching up with one hand to wrap her fingers into her curls. “Welcome to the Grey Tower,” she continued. “If you will follow me?”

The blue-eyed Accepted turned and walked away without waiting for a response, body held with perfect poise. Once she was certain her new companion had indeed followed her, she said in a warm tone, “Where are you from? What brought you to the Tower?”

Eveayla's eyes darted up at the mention of her name. This Accepted didn't look all that older than she was -- maybe you didn't have to spend much time as a Novice before being raised. That was hopeful. Once she was raised, she might be able to go home. She followed along, taking in the floor tiles and wall hangings as they walked. Say what you like about Aes Sedai, they knew how to decorate.

"I'm from Far Madding," she said, mentally appraising the woman's appearance. She had an accent of Tarabon but no braids, no veil. Unusual. Obviously Leanora had fully accepted Tower life enough to leave her homeland's trademarks behind. Eveayla didn't mind it so much - she wouldn't have wanted to wear a veil either. In fact, given the option, she'd probably adopt the fashion of some of the other lands. Cairhienin clothing had always appealed to her - layers and layers. Maybe with color it could be fun to wear. Probably not very practical, though.

Oh. The Accepted had asked her another question. Bothersome.

"I didn't really want to come," she said matter-of-factly. "An Aes Sedai in Murandy told me I didn't have a choice in it. I don't think I'll be here too long." She tried to look nonchalant. Disinterested. That usually made people feel like they were wasting her time. "It will be good for business. My mother's a Master Weaver in Far Madding, and I was in Murandy to sell wares to the King. I suppose selling them to the Grey Tower will be good for us as well."

Unsure of herself, she gave the other woman a sideways glance. Maybe being too important wouldn't help her here as much as she hoped. It hadn't done well with the Mistress of Novices.

"It probably won't hurt me to spend some time here. I've heard that Aes Sedai are excellent at the Game of Houses. My friend Sabine is due to marry a noble in Andor, and I think after I'm done here I'll go visit her and sell fabrics to the Queen."

Leanora
Leanora listened to Eveayla’s speech with carefully concealed amusement. Far Madding, with Domani looks? That was an interesting twist. It also explained why the girl looked so discontent with her new lot in life. Far Madding was a queer place, one she had no intention of visiting. With the new novice’s potential to channel, there was little chance she would be selling fabrics to the Queen, either, but it would do little good to bring that up now.

“The Simir family -where I am from- is known from Dragonwall to Aryth Ocean for the delicate lace they produce,” she said instead, a faint smile on her face. “They serve many fine ladies and even a handful of Queens. Thus I completely understand taking pride in your work and wanting to acquire new customers who are worthy of its quality.” She gestured to indicate the young woman should take the stairs at the end of the corridor.

“However, you will need to set aside such pursuits while you are here. Learning to channel is not a process that can be rushed or done half-heartedly. You will need to focus very hard on your studies for some time before you will be able to visit any of your friends.” Sabine, or whatever her name was, would be graying by the time Lea’s young charge attained the shawl; it seemed unlikely she would care much about her company at that point.

“You are of course more than welcome to write to anyone you care to, so long as your chores and lessons are completed before you begin,” the Accepted continued in a pleasant tone. “Perhaps that will help a bit.”

She gave her companion a direct look. “You are interested in the Game of Houses? What could a Far Madding weaver need from Daes Dae’mar?”

Eveayala picked up on none of Leanora's queues. She listened with interest as the woman talked about where she was from and who she knew. It seemed like at least one other person in the tower might actually be worth knowing. She even smiled when the woman started talking about her family's lace. Maybe they had traded before, or used some of their products...

Her heart sank a little when she was told that she wasn't going to be able to do much mingling or visiting while at the Tower. She couldn't leave? That was... disappointing. Maybe she would write Sabine, though. She wondered again what her friend was up to.

"You are interested in the Game of Houses? What could a Far Madding weaver need from Daes Dae'mar?"

The question was odd.

"We sell to nobility," Eveayla said flatly. Was this Accepted really that dense? No wonder she wasn't Aes Sedai yet. "It's my mother who is a weaver, anyway. I don't intend to be one. Even so, knowing how to secure and manipulate contracts within the houses is important to business. We can hardly get our wares in front of everyone important without spending time in the social circles they do, Accepted." She made sure to include the last part. That had been stressed by the Mistress of Novices -- you always included someone's title.

Lea’s smile did not reach her eyes as she glanced at the new novice. In her memory, her mother swept through the common area of the family home in a cloud of perfume and lace and silk and golden hair. Are you ready, Leanora? We’re going to be late. The dress she wore itched terribly, and the game she had been playing with her cousins still lay in so many pieces on the ground in the corner. There are bigger Games to play, Avarie said as if reading her mind. Come along.

“Ah, yes. Socializing is important to advancing oneself, it is true,” she said calmly. “It is good to know the ebb and flow of politics and upper society. I can tell you now- the games your mother plays are like children’s toys in the sand compared to what you will see here.” Her eyes finally crinkled as she stopped in front of a nondescript door. “It is likely when you do get to visit your family, you will be the one calling the shots no matter who is doing the weaving."

Her eyes finally crinkled as she reached for the slate by the door, digging a bit of chalk from her belt purse and adding “Eveayla” to the dark surface. Then she hung it back on its hook, and opened the door. “Welcome home,” she said as a flow of Fire flicked out to light the lamp on narrow table across the room. It flared up to illumine: not much. She did not miss the novice chambers whatsoever. "You will be sharing this room with Lisari, another novice. It looks as if she is out, but you will meet this evening for certain." She gestured the Far Madding girl to the empty side of the room.

“When you’ve put your things away, I’ll give you the two mark tour, and then you’re on your own until classes begin tomorrow,” she said.

Eveayla had to admit that she rather liked the thought of being in charge when she went home. Her mother could be... domineering, sometimes. Maybe some Tower training wouldn't be a totally useless waste of time. Her eyes settled on the door, reading her own name and then the name of her roommate, rolling the word around in her head to see what it might sound like. What it might look like, attached to a person. She looked at the flickering flame for a moment and sat her spare dress on the bed, sliding a pair of boots and her writing case beneath it.

Turning quickly on her heel, she followed Leanora down the hallway, trying to pay attention to all of the things that must be remembered, all the while wondering what, exactly, she had gotten herself into.
