Avyra [fancy]+ Kyella[/fancy]
Avyra, holding Kyella on her left hand, made her way to the field they had always used for practice. The eagle was relaxed with her hood on, head up tall and wings obediently to her side. It was easy to see that Avyra and the huge bird made a wonderful team.

Avyra stopped in the middle of the field, unleashing Kyella's jesses and removing her hood. The bird instantly began to look around, and Avyra tossed her into the air, forcing her into flight. Then she reached into her bag and pulled out a lure, then whistled, starting to swing it in the air.

Keyalla rounded back to her, big wings flared to dive. She made her move, and Avyra pulled the lure back the other direction, making Kyella come around again to strike once more.

She did this a few times before tossing the lure, letting Kyella finally pounce on it, the eagle gripping the prey in her talons. Avyra whistled, holding out her arm, and Kyella looked over, then spread her wings and flew to Avyra's fist, watching the Accepted with gold eyes.

Avyra smiled, touching her belly softly. "That was wonderful. Thank you, Kyella." The bird clicked her beak once.

Avyra heard footsteps in the grass, then, and Kyella puffed her feathers slightly. She turned. "Oh. Hello there! Sorry if you wanted the field; we're almost done."

Katrie
A slender hand lifted to block out the worst of the sun’s glare. There! She hadn’t imagined it! The tall woman had no idea what it was against the sky, but it was very definitely moving. She pushed along her reassurance and excitement through the bond and then closed the book she had been reading with a clipped snap of sound.

Katrie left the bench and the gardens behind, making her way out of the Tower grounds proper. Every so often she tilted her face up and searched the wide expanse of blue for another glimpse of the brown... blob? She squinted, bouncing up onto the tips of her toes. Was it... a bird? It seemed larger than any one she had seen before...

Angling towards the nearest field she could find, it soon became apparent that this was no random bird. And there was an Accepted? How curious! The Cairhienin made a delighted little sound and hurried over. The bird noticed her first, puffing up slightly and the girl in the banded hems turned and spoke.

Brown eyes were wide; the... eagle?... was even larger up close! The Aes Sedai shook her head rapidly from side to side. “I don’t want the field. I came to watch you and your bird! Take your time!” Katrie bubbled excitedly and settled down in the grass several paces away, tucking her skirts underneath her.

“I don’t want the field. I came to watch you and your bird! Take your time!”

Avyra raised an eyebrow but nodded, looking to Kyella. "Looks like we have an audience, girl." The bird clicked her sharp beak, repositioning talons as long as Avyra's pinky finger by unfurling long wings and slapping her feet on the glove.

Avyra tossed her up again, and the two did their lure exercise once again, Kyella catching the "prey" with killing accuracy. She wasn't like a falcon after the lure; she soared up then dove down for one easy catch.

Putting the bird back on her glove, Avyra walked back over to the Aes Sedai who seemed ecstatic to have a bird show. Sitting to her left, she gave Kyella the lure on her fist, and the bird happily tore it apart with little hesitation.

"How's that for a show, Aes Sedai?" She asked with a smile. "Very cooperative bird."

Katrie
Katrie couldn’t help but clap excitedly as the Accepted settled down next to her, the Brown splitting her attention between the girl and the giant bird. “That was amazing!” She huffed a little, blowing her breath upwards to no avail as that stray stubborn curl resettled over her forehead, falling over her eye. She tucked it behind her ear and peered curiously at strange mismatched pair next to her.

“I didn’t know you could do that with a bird. Well, I mean, I did in that I’ve read it in a book, but I’ve never actually seen it before. Where did you get your bird? Was it difficult?” Large brown eyes went to the unfamiliar items nearby, what looked like small leather loops... and a... leather hood cap... thing...? The Aes Sedai made a soft little noise, her inquisitive delight broadcasting clearly from her expression. “Are those hard to use?? Did you have to buy any of it?” Her mouth skewed to the side thoughtfully. “I suppose the Tower took care of it, if you did. What do they do?”

She smiled, her head tilting to the side. “What’s your name? I’m Katrie and it’s very nice to meet you and your bird. Is it a he or a she? An eagle...?” That was asked tentatively, the brown-haired woman finally pausing enough for a breath. “Does your bird have a name?”

Avyra startled as this Aes Sedai started asking her questions upon questions. Without pause, even, to answer. And no condescending tone either, just nearly childish glee. Avyra expected more from a Novice.

And she was beautiful. That was something Avyra had noticed with nearly every Aes Sedai she had met.

She tried to focus on Kyella and shove her unease down. The bird would sense it and become anxious as well.

“I didn’t know you could do that with a bird. Well, I mean, I did in that I’ve read it in a book, but I’ve never actually seen it before. Where did you get your bird? Was it difficult? Are those hard to use?? Did you have to buy any of it? I suppose the Tower took care of it, if you did. What do they do?” She slowed down for just a moment. “What’s your name? I’m Katrie and it’s very nice to meet you and your bird. Is it a he or a she? An eagle...? Does your bird have a name?”

Avyra let Kyella off the fist, unleashing her so she could wander around and explore if she wanted to. The bird didn't fly; rather she found a rock to perch herself on so she could clean her beak and feathers and play with her jesses.

"I'm Avyra, Katrie Sedai," Avyra replied with a touch of unease. "That's Kyella. She's a golden eagle." She paused. "A passage golden eagle to be exact, Katrie Sedai. That means she's about a year old. I caught her in the wild about a month ago. I'll be releasing her about the same time next year." She paused. "Her equipmentment is very complex and would take ages to explain, Katrie Sedai. I'm... a... writing a class on it actually. Its..." She looked down at the ground, picking at clumps of grass. "Its not going too well, I suppose."

She picked up her grass ball, tossing it over a few feet. Kyella perked up and dove for it, then hobbled over to Avyra and dropped it beside her, beak clicking. Avyra tossed it again, and the bird took off after it.

"I wouldn't say its hard, Katrie Sedai-" Kyella brought back her grass ball, which Avyra threw again. "-it just takes a lot of work and patience."

Katrie
White teeth leapt out from coppery skin as Katrie smiled again, pushing stray curls away from her face. For long moments, she was entirely fascinated with the way the golden eagle dove after the hastily made grass ball. As Kyella brought it back, the bird’s... beak?... made the most interesting clicking sound.

“It’s very nice to meet you Avyra,” the slender woman said earnestly. “And Kyella too. She is beautiful. And big! I didn’t realize birds could get so big. How much more is she likely to grow? I like her much better than those flying lizard creatures that the Seanchan use.” Her nose wrinkled at that, the Brown not entirely sure why she had brought up that bit of unpleasantness. Promptly reordering her thoughts, she refocused her attention back on the Accepted.

“A class? On birds?” The Aes Sedai’s brown eyes widened a little, her head tilting to the side. “That sounds like it would be a wonderful class! Why isn’t it going well? I... well, only if you wanted it that is, would be willing to help. And when it’s set up to your liking, I would take it. I don’t know if I actually want a bird, but I have so many questions! For instance, you said you will release Kyella next year. Why? Do you only keep birds for a year? Or is there an age limit? How do you know how old they are?”

The tall Cairhienin frowned for a moment, then her entire expression brightened. “How can you tell?” There had to be a way to tell, or else Avyra wouldn’t know how old Kyella was. “Is it in the way their feathers grow? Or maybe it’s in the way they’re shaped...” The questions slipped out of her mouth, tumbling from her lips in rapid succession. It had to be the feathers. She couldn’t think of another... well perhaps it was how long their talons were? “Oh! Or in how long the... talons are?” Or maybe... could it be the beak too? The Brown straightened a little, her expression thoughtful as she studied the golden eagle for several long moments.

“Is she hungry? What does she eat?” Katrie lifted her gaze to the Accepted after a pause. “Are you hungry?”

Avyra once again found herself overwelmed by questions. But she didn't want to be rude and tell the Aes Sedai to stop talking or slow down, so she let them all sink in and hoped she answered all of them.

"On falconry, not just the birds, but the birds are a huge part of it." Avyra paused, looking at Kyella. "She's fully grown sizewise. You tell by their feathers. She doesn't have her adult plumage in yet." She paused, gently taking Kyella's wing in her hand and spreading it at full length. Kyella didn't seem to care.

"See the white patch under each wing? Adults don't have that. She'll lose them in her next molt."

The next question was a little harder to answer.

"We keep them for a year to help them. Keeping them longer does her or her species no good. A falconer helps the bird hunt, then will release the bird once her hunting is up to speed."

Avyra looked at Kyella again. "She would hunt now if I hunted her, but she's not hungry hungry. She can go for a bit longer." She paused. "Me? I... I could eat, Katrie Sedai. If you're hungry. Just let me put her back up."

Katrie
“Oh I see,” Katrie nodded as she listened to Avyra explain, brown eyes wide as she peered at the indicated white patch beneath Kyella’s wing.

The Aes Sedai still didn’t quite understand how keeping the birds and training them for only year was meant to help them... but maybe it was along the same lines of a mother teaching a miniature human how to speak and walk, only with giant birds and how to hunt. And there was no releasing the small child back into the wild.

The Accepted didn’t elaborate on what the large bird ate, but Katrie could hazard a guess or two. Just to be sure though, she made a mental note and reminder to find out. Books on falconry... there had to be some in the Library. Her head tilted thoughtfully. Would Dax know? He might... sometimes the caravan guarding jobs he’d taken were full of strange, wonderful stories and odd bits of information that she found absolutely fascinating.

“I am, Avyra. Hungry, that is,” the slender woman said with a smile. “I know of a few places out in Hama Valon... all excellent. You can decide where we go when we’re out in the city.”

Katrie fell into step beside the pristine white banded hems as they made their way back towards the Tower, her expression becoming thoughtful. “I don’t think I’ve ever been to...” she paused, looking momentarily abashed. “I’m afraid I don’t know the proper term for it... but the place where they keep all of the birds. Does Kyella have her own space, or does she have to share?”

Avyra seemed to have turned into the leader, which was odd in her eyes. Katrie Sedai should know where everything is, nor should she be treating Avyra like they were anywhere close to equals. Avyra knew that they would never be. Katrie was beautiful, and Avyra would never be taken seriously even if she did become an Aes Sedai. And if she didn't, she would always be a failure and would never be welcomed back here.

Not that it mattered. Even if she was thrown out on the street, people loved trying to help out starving "children."

She felt Kyella's talons tighten on her glove slightly, and she realized that her heart was racing. The bird could feel her pulse through thick leather.

"The enclosure is called a mew," she said. "She gets her own space. It'll look dark and a bit small at first, but rest assured that it is a perfect place for a bird. Darkness helps them. They won't get scared as easily when they can't see."

Avyra paused, slipping the hood on over Kyella's head, tightening the strings on the end with her teeth. "We also can't let her go after game right now, after a full hunt. She won't return. And its bad to take food from a bird."

She unlocked the door to the mew and walked inside, letting the eagle lead. Then she unlocked another door, only when the main door was shut, unhooded and unclipped Kyella, and let her fly inside before locking it back up.

Avyra moved to another door, peering inside through a small window at her eye level. "Hey Tempest, how are you doing sweetie?" The white falcon inside clicked her beak and ruffled her feathers. "Evening hunt today, pretty girl. Don't you worry." She continued to the third, where there was a sudden thunk of a bird landing on a perch at the window. "Theta! Hello, good to see you!" The tiny orange falcon let out a trill. "I might have to take you inside tonight, its gonna get cold." He bobbed his head at her.

"Everyone's good. Lead the way, I have no idea what's good and what's not, Katrie Sedai."
