The scene before Terric was peculiar to say the least. Half a dozen Ji’alantin stood to one side of the garden path wearing bandanas, eyepatches or various accutremont of stereotypical shady characters. Some of the men carried padded training batons or wooden practice knives, others carried improvised weapons like rocks or knotted ropes, a few were even empty handed. On the far end of the path, there was a rather bored looking Accepted wearing a non-descript shawl. The theater might have seemed a little excessive to some, but Terric wanted his students to be a part in the lesson. That, and he’d found most lectures in classrooms deathly boring, and worse not remotely informational.
Finally the students began to arrive. As expected, most of them were Drin, but he was happy to see the occasional Novice and Soldier. This class hopefully would help the guarded as well as the guards. Preferring to get the students into the meat of his lesson, Terric rattled off a quick introduction he’d pre-rehearsed, “Good afternoon, I’m Terric. This is the Basics of Bodyguarding. I’ll try to learn everybody’s names by the end of this class, but if you have any questions, don’t be afraid to ask. If you have any questions before we get started, now’s the chance to ask.”
A stocky, blond Drin towards the front raised his hand, “Ji’vale, How do you plan on grading?”
“I’m glad you asked….” Terric responded, probing for a name.
“Gil, Gil Dannal,” the Drin supplied.
“Ok, Gil Dannal, the grading process is quite simple, you will receive various scenarios throughout the class. You won’t lose points for them, but you have a chance for gaining extra points. They will be added onto your final exam grade. The final exam will be a big scenario where you have to use all the skills you learned in this class.”
Walking back and forth with a deadly ease, he’d learned long before coming to the Tower, he addressed his class, “If nobody had any more questions, we’ll begin.” He brought his hands together with a sharp clap, “This is your first lesson. If you cannot learn it, you might as well leave now. You’ll probably get your charge killed. Your job as a body guard,” he said, pointing to individual Drin, “Is not to kill enemies and gain glory. Your job is to protect your charge. If you never have to fight, you’re probably doing a good job. There are four basic concepts you will need to learn. Each lesson will be dedicated to one of the four concepts. Learn them in order because this is the order you will attempt them in the real world. ‘Assess‘, ‘Avoid‘, ‘Deter‘, and ‘Fight‘. Today we will discuss ‘Assess’.”
