Maever Donovan There was a way of Healing animals that even some of the better Yellows couldn't quite get the knack of. It required a certain amount of precision and delicacy, that was often a little lacking in those who did not take the time or the risk to tend to non-humans.

Maever hadn't been able to help himself really. As a trainee he had come across a small bird with a broken wing, and he had managed to Heal it just fine. He counted that as one of the proudest moments of his training career - no postulating, no posing and preening for an audience, just a man and his power to fix what was broken. Maever took solace in the idea that he could fix creatures who were always deserving of compassion and were hurt through no fault of their own.

That morning, Maever planned on waiting outside the Grey Tower and performing his weekly ritual of Healing any animals and other creatures that were brought his way, usually by children. He took his supplies along with him, and nibbled on a sprig of mint as he walked. The Illianer carried a sword with him, but it wasn't something he was often seen to use. As with his dancing though, it wasn't that he didn't use the sword, it was simply that it was difficult to find where and when the man trained as he preferred to do it in isolation.

There was already a small gaggle of children holding various pets, and Maever gave them a wave as he trotted on over. One small blanket later and he was sat with his legs crossed, the children gathering around with their animals. "Hullo!" he said. "Now, I do no be knowing who did get here first but worry not, I will look at every single animal. So please, do be patient, and I will be as quick as I can! Now, who do be first?"

"Me!" One of the kids exclaimed, holding out a rabbit with big floppy ears and half a carrot in its mouth. "This is Mr Nibbles and he's really hot."

"Oh dear, that do no be any good!" Maever said as he took the rabbit and held him in his arms. A quick Delve said Mr Nibbles was in perfect health, but that didn't mean he wasn't going to indulge the child. "Fortune prick me, you do be right. Mr Nibbles do be a little bit warm! But I did look him over and he will be just fine. Remember to give him plenty of water, lots of tasty fresh salad, and be careful with too many cuddles! Make sure he do be having somewhere shady he can rest when he do be tired, okay?" Maever handed the rabbit back and although he hadn't actually done anything, he felt accomplished anyway. The child's grin was reward enough.

Not every pet had a mysterious invisible ailment. Maever did tend to those with broken bones, stomach troubles, and a myriad of illnesses most humans could get. He used little weaves of Air to keep an animal still as he Delved it, if it wasn't inclined to sit still. Maever could put them to sleep with a weave of Spirit but he preferred to not make the children worry, so that was a last resort.

After what happened to Hama Valon, there were lots of men, women and children who needed Healing, but nobody thought about the pets. Maever had seen enough blood and broken bones on dear little animals for one Age, and he was glad to remedy "ill" overly warm rabbits all morning if it made the children feel better.

The last animal was a dog which was made of more fluff than animal, and it reminded Maever of the mysterious Dog Gaidin he sometimes saw about the Grey Tower. "Hello there," he said, "I do be Maever."

"I'm Sam and this is Tubbs, he has something wrong with his stomach," the lad said. "He keeps being sick and he looks tired."

"He do probably be dehydrated," Maever supposed. At the kid's look he added, "ummm, it do be meaning that he does no have much water in his body. He do be needing to drink lots so he does no fall ill, but being sick does no help with that." He seized Saidin and Delved the dog with Air, Water and Spirit, typically the female way of Delving but one he was more comfortable with. Of course the way he formed the weaves wasn't quite the same, but the end result was and he made a face. Tubbs had eaten something that had blocked his stomach and pierced his stomach lining to boot. "Okay, I do be knowing what the problem do be. But I will be needing to do this behind my screen, because it will no be pretty. Here," Maever took a sweetbun from his bag and handed it over to Sam, "go and play with the other children and Tubbs will be back with you soon enough!"

Sam nodded fervently, casting a worried look Tubbs' way before he went to see some of his friends and their Healed, or "healed", pets. Maever wasted no time in putting up a small private screen around the dog so no prying eyes could be squicked out at what he was about to do - it would no doubt involve more vomiting, but afterwards Tubbs would be as right as rain.
