Tia Tomosan
Tia Tomosan was not the Tomosan most often seen walking the stacks of the Library. No, that privilege fell to her twin brother, Einion. If he could, he would happily get lost in the stacks for days on end. Lately, he’d been sharing his library time with a new friend, Cade, who was the son of Jerid Walker and his Warder wife, Lysira. Tia didn’t know any from the family all that well, but she knew her mother and Lysira were long-time friends. In fact, there were times when her mother spoke of Lysira as more of a mentor than a friend. Not for the first time, Tia wondered about her mother’s time as one of the learning ranks.
Pushing the wayward thought out of her mind, Tia looked around for her brother, hoping to enlist his help in finding the resources she was after. When she didn’t see Einion, the Accepted shrugged and went to the main desk. Behind it sat two Brown Aes Sedai. One of the pair had a sour expression on her face, and didn’t look up when Tia stepped up to the desk. The other Aes Sedai was somewhat plump, had rosy cheeks, and greeted Tia with a warm smile, “Good afternoon, Accepted. How may I help you?”
Tia bit her lip and hesitated for a moment. She could have asked her Great Memma, right? But. . .she also needed to show her own independence, and what she wanted to know could just as easily be researched. It wasn’t like the library was going to trap her indefinitely, right? Clearing her throat, she finally asked, “I was hoping to find information on the relationship between Battle Weaves and Cloud Dancing?”
The woman’s warm smile broadened, “Are you thinking of researching weaves? There’s an Indigo sister who does quite a bit of research on the relationships between weaves.”
Tia shook her head, recalling a conversation she had with Illyria Sedai, “No. . .this is more for my curiosity. I am proficient with cloud dancing, and wondered how it might relate to battle weaves.”
The Brown Aes Sedai pushed herself from the desk and motioned to the stacks off to Tia’s right, “We have all sorts of information on battle weaves, and cloud dancing, Accepted. You have come to the right place. Perhaps you’ll discover a love for your research and choose the Brown when the time comes, yes?”
Offering the woman a weak smile, Tia tried to be diplomatic in her reply, “Perhaps, though I intend to join the ranks of the Green to follow in the footsteps of my Great Memma.”
The Brown stopped and gently took Tia’s wrist, “Great Memma, did you say? You would be Tia Tomosan, twin sister to Einion, yes?”
Tia felt herself blush, “Uhm. . .actually, yes. You know him?”
The woman laughed a hearty laugh, causing the other more sour Sedai to frown in their direction, “Of course I know him. He is in here every day. He and that Cade fellow, it seems. They have become fast friends. He speaks of you often, though he said it might be the end of days if you stepped in here.” The woman laughed again, “I do hope he was wrong. Now come, child. Our stacks are immense, and you may find yourself overwhelmed when I show you what resources you can draw from in an effort to find your answers.”
The Library was a maze, or at least it was to Tia, but the Brown sister helped her navigate the stacks. Before long, they came to one section, and the Aes Sedai spread her arms out, “And we are at the Battle Weaves section here on the left. Conveniently, Cloud Dancing is on the right. There will be some overlap, of course. Is there anything specific you wish to know? I would be happy to help you with your research.”
Tia furrowed her brows and raised her shoulders in a shrug, “To be honest, I am not sure where to start. Research and the like is more my brother’s area of expertise.” She looked at the stacks of books on either side of her, realizing there were many more books than she could hope to read in a lifetime.
“Not to worry. Battle weaves is a popular subject,” the Aes Sedai replied as she went to the left stack. She ran her fingers along the spines of the various tomes before stopping at one, “Here we are.” She pulled a rather simple looking book off of the shelf and handed it to Tia, “This particular book addresses battle weaves in terms of a channeler’s affinity strengths. For you, as a Cloud Dancer, the text might suggest focusing on Air and Water. . .perhaps even Fire.”
Taking the book from the Brown Sister, Tia opened it, and ran her hand along the text. It wasn’t a thick book, but she wouldn’t finish reading it in a day. . .not if she really wanted to absorb the lessons she hoped to learn. “This sounds like a good starting point,” she said as she looked back to the Aes Sedai with a warm smile.
“I would consider that particular book the best starting point, Accepted. I can also show you what I think you should consider if you want to go beyond what is within its pages,” the Aes Sedai replied as she moved down the Battle Weaves shelves. “For battle weave specific texts, the second leading tome would be this one here,” she pointed out a particularly thick book that intimidated Tia without her even having to pick it up.
The Brown Sister flashed a humorous smile, “It is a thick book, yes, but it is perhaps one of the most complete tomes we have on the subject of battle weaves. Now...for Cloud Dancing, our selection isn’t quite as broad, but there is one text that I think will pair quite well with the book you currently have in your hand.” She moved across the aisle and, after a few seconds of searching, stopped and stooped down, “Ah here it is.” She pulled out another book that was no bigger than the one Tia currently held, “This one. . .it speaks of Cloud Dancing in a variety of ways, and there is a chapter devoted to battle weaves.”
Tia took the second book and looked between the two. It was a lot more reading than she anticipated, but she did want to learn more, didn’t she? “Thank you Aes Sedai. . .I think these will give me a good start,” she replied and followed the Brown Sister out of the stacks. “Forgive me for asking, but. . .is this what you spend much of your time doing? Research and looking through the stacks here?”
The Aes Sedai gave Tia a warm smile, “Me personally, or those who wear the Brown Shawl? For me, yes but then I prefer research to adventure. Some. . .like a bit of both. They may find hint of something interesting here, and opt to go see for themselves in the world beyond our walls. We follow our curiosity. Why do you ask? Is it because you are interested in the Brown?”
“I ask out of curiosity,” Tia replied. “I do not think my path lies with the Brown, Aes Sedai. I respect what you and your Ajah are about, but my calling is to the Green. If there was a doubt, it has been confirmed by this brief visit. My brother enjoys the stacks, research and expanding his knowledge, but my path is different from his.”
The Aes Sedai tilted her head slightly, “The Green shall be lucky to have you, Accepted, but do not think you have no place here in the library. Knowledge is perhaps one of the best weapons you can bring to a fight, and often our teachers only scratch the surface of a subject. Do not be afraid to dig a little deeper if your curiosity gets the better of you. I am sure your brother would be happy to assist if you come back, and never hesitate to seek me out if there is something you wish to look into and expand your knowledge.”
Tia gave an awkward smile, “I will certainly keep it in mind, Aes Sedai.” She fidgeted a bit and looked between the two books she now held. Would these books be her gateway to the library? Would she perhaps become a scholarly green? Time would tell. For now, she knew well enough that she was not cut out to wear the Brown, and her focus was still very much on the Ajah her Great Memma belonged to prior to becoming the Amyrlin Seat.
