Mordjen
The grey-haired guard jabbed his sour-faced companion roughly in the ribs. "I swear, one day you're going ta let one of these pups stray, and you'll be out on yer arse Heb."

Heb grunted dismissively in response, meandering back to the guard post without a glance back. The grey-haired guard threw his hands up in exasperation with a loud sigh. "Fine," he muttered, turning to the new arrival. "The name's Mordjen. Pleased to meet you. I'll take you to where you ought to go. If you'll follow me, please?"

Mordjen stepped out in front, taking comfortable but ground-eating strides. As he walked, he chattered amiably with the newcomer. The entrance road was somewhat long, and Mordjen only went halfway down before veering off to the right. He cut across a field towards a large four- or five-story building. It looked like a dormitory, and faced the tall glass Grey Tower itself.

"I never tried t' be a Warder meself," Mordjen continued. "Me wife, Liz, bless 'er. Well, she would probably cry herself to sleep every single night if I told her I wanted t' try an' get meself bonded to some fancy Aes Sedai." The guard chuckled at that, then cleared his throat after stealing a glance at the woman striding alongside him. "No no, I watch the front gate, and help carry firewood when there are special occasions. That is more than enough connection t' the One Power for me, yes ma'am. But if I could learn some of the way of the Warders, like how they fight with their bare hands, I would very much enjoy learning about that. I think it would make me better at being a guard." Mordjen seemed to be lost in his own thoughts for a moment, his pace slowing briefly.

"Anyways," Mordjen perked up, "Master Darrow said he would be seeing t' inviting me and some of the boys to a class with his trainees. 'pparently there's a Blademaster for that now. Am sure that will come about when the time is right. Master Darrow always seems to be busy now he's back, but I think he's a goodly soul, proper head on his shoulders." They were walking into a hard packed dirt yard, between four buildings spaced far apart. To their immediate right was a barn-sized building all on a single story, with a few people around it. The men and women practicing various forms of fighting styles were spread from there all the way across the Yard. At the opposite end were two newer structures, made of unweathered stone, although the purposes of either was not evident from the exterior. Immediately ahead was the large dormitory hall, and it was towards that and a large set of doors that Mordjen led them. "Master Darrow is a good man, but a hard man too. Don't be letting on what happened with Heb back there, if you please. He's a trial for most, but this Tower is probably the only thing keeping him from finding an arrow wi' his name on it. He didn't mean no harm; I'll keep on at him. The Master of Training's office is upstairs." Mordjen pointed at the set of stairs that ran central through the large lobby. The foyer had a tiled floor and wood panelled walls, with several tables, chairs and benches set out, occupied by groups of trainees in the various greys of the Warder Yards.

Mordjen turned and clasped his hands behind his back, bouncing up once on his toes. "He usually has open hours in his office from a couple of hours before High, until a few hours before Low, if he's no out running an errand. If he doesn't happen t' be there right then, there is usually a book with a pen. You can scribble a request for a meeting, and then come back. Right now, it is about four hours after Early, so he is probably already there." The guard grinned broadly, and nodded. "It is good to welcome you to the Tower. Good luck!" Patting the newcomer jovially on the shoulder, Mordjen retreated back the way they had come.
Ravak
In the moderately-sized office he called home, Ravak Darrow lounged in his leather-backed armchair, a ledger propped up on his lap. Behind him, a fire crackled in the large fireplace, set behind the Shienaran's chair and desk. Once he had preferred the cold, but a long year in the Three-fold Land had made him more accustomed to the heat. Not a beat of sweat sat on the Warder's face, although the room was as warm as standing in the sunlight on a summer's day. Using an iridescent quill, he made corrections and updated in his ledger, referencing various papers sprawled over his desk. A lot had changed in a year, but the Master of Training had new impetus to knuckle down and get on with his duties.

The room's furnishings had been carefully returned to their former glory. Everything was Shienaran in style, if not in manufacture. It was a lot easier to get imitations carved than to import furniture from the Borderlands. Hard edges and clean lines were everywhere, all built from solid oak. The desk had solid sides as opposed to spindly legs, so the lower half of the Master of Training was hidden from view. Two newer chairs sat on a Taraboner rug for the Gaidin's visitors. A weapon rack in one corner held Rav's weapons. His Tower-forged longsword was placed so that the Great Serpent on its crossguard was visible. Beside it rested a stout sword-breaker, a long quarterstaff made of silvery wood, and a simple longbow. There was a second table, covered in more sheets of paper being weighed down various throwing daggers. Lastly, a small stand held a teapot and cups.

Ravak undid another button on his shirt, so that it was only half done-up. The heat may not cause him to sweat, but he still felt it like everyone else. He pulled at his collar, revealing well-defined muscles underneath. He had joined the Yards as a slip of a boy. Now he drew the eyes of quite a considerable number of onlookers, especially now that he was unbonded. The reasons behind that dismissal were not public knowledge, although most drew conclusions from the length he had been away, and the lack of the Accepted he had disappeared with.

Ravak heard the floorboards outside of his room creak. Not everyone would pick up on that, but this was his office, and he was used to its quirks. He placed the ledger in a desk drawer, page marked by a letter opener, then sat up straight to greet the new visitor.

"You sure you want to do this, Sigrid?" Marun eyed the imposing building before them, looking like he'd rather be elsewhere. Which, if the tales he'd spent the two-month long journey from Arafel to Andor telling were true, he probably did. A runaway trainee probably didn't want to be anywhere near the Tower.

Sigrid shook her head as she leaped down from the cart seat, both in response to Marun's question and in amazement over the fact that Marun Niso, long time family friend of the Kavaroys and respectable trader, had once been a warder trainee of the Grey Tower. Before he ran away back to Arafel, that is.

"No, Marun. I'm here and I'm not leaving now. Tell my parents I arrived safely and I'll write as soon as possible." She knew they'd be worried, even if they hadn't tried to stop her from going to the Tower. "I'll find my brother and tell him to write too." Ever since Mathias had left Arafel some time ago, there'd been no word from him. They didn't even know if he'd arrived in Andor safely or not.

Inconsiderate toad she thought, gripping her sword and walking towards the guard house, trying to look as if she belonged here. Trying not to look as if she was nervous. Behind her, she could hear Marun muttering something under his breath, something along the lines of 'bloody Aes Sedai' and 'snotty warders.' She ignored his mutterings. Surely everything he'd told her couldn't be true, could it? If it was, then she doubted anyone would join the Warder trainees. Still, she was uneasy, she willing to admit. One or two second thoughts were running through her head. It doesn't matter she told her self firmly, knocking on the guardhouse door. Even if his tales are true, I'm not leaving.

Sigrid was notoriously stubborn, and hadn't upset her parents and spent two unpleasant, hot, dusty, months bouncing around on a wagon seat only to turn around and go home. She was here, for good or ill.

It took a few minutes, but finally someone came to the guardhouse door. A scowling, unpleasant guard who didn't look happy to see her. At all. He looked even less happy when she told why she was there and she was looking to join the Warder Yards. After several more minutes of waiting, and what appeared to be a minor disagreement between two of the guards, she was following behind a guard too... well, actually, she didn't know where she was going. All the guard had said was "Follow me, I'll take you where you need to go."

He could have told me more than that she thought in annoyance, falling step beside him as they walked across a dirt yard and into a large building. Still, she had better sense than to mouth off. She may have had the unfortunate tendency to speak without thinking, but even she knew that to snip at a Tower guard on her very first day would be a very bad decision. So she said nothing, merely nodding when the guard rambled on about this and that, not paying much attention to be honest. There were some students- she assumed-practicing various fighting styles and she peered at them in interest, much more interested in that than the guard's ramblings. None of it seemed applicable to her anyways, until he stopped and pointed at a set of stairs that led up, informing her that Master of Training's office was upstairs. Master of....? Ah, right, that must be who's in charge of the trainees. Somehow she'd expected something more military-sounding, but the Tower probably did things their own way.

The guard gave her the Master of Training's hours, before patting her shoulder cheerfully, wishing her luck, and loping away. Sigrid watched him go a bit uneasily, wishing he wasn't leaving. His endless chatter has been irritating, but at least he'd been a friendly face. None of the trainees ( at least she assumed that's what they were) scattered about the hall looked too friendly.

Stll, she shrugged and started up the stairs, getting a grip on her thoughts. She was a Borderlander, an Arafellin, and had every right to be here. She was not afraid. And she certainly wasn't going home, if the yards would have her. Reaching the landing, she strode towards the door the guard had indicated, hoping this meeting went well. She really did want to join the trainees, and she hoped the yards didn't turn her away.

Ravak
When no-one immediately appeared in the open doorway, Ravak called out. "Come in. It's just me and the paperwork in here." Some people, mostly Drin or Ji, had an apprehension about coming to the Master of Training, especially if it was to report rule-breaking they themselves had committed. Still, it was better to report that to Ravak himself, than to be dragged in by the collar by one of the Gaidin.

What entered was neither Drin'far'ji nor Ji'dar. Not yet, he thought wryly. Rav waved the girl in without another word, gesturing at the two chairs opposite. Long gone were the days when the Shienaran would let someone stand in front of his deck. Now they could attempt to feel at home, if home was furnished for a Shienaran merchant who liked sweltering conditions. Rav reached back to pull the fireguard up in front of the hearth. Make them feel comfortable.

The girl - or was it woman; Rav was notorious for wildly misjudging ages - was clearly Arafellin from the clattering of bells that accompanied her movement. He fingered open a different drawer, just enough to eye a pair of scissors. A none-too-kind grin briefly flickered on his face, before he schooled his features and scratched at his beard thoughtfully.

"You are here to join the Warder Yards," Rav stated matter-of-factly. No-one from outside the Tower came to see the Master of Training for any other reason. "My name is Ravak Gaidin, the Grey Tower's Master of Training. You may refer to me as Ravak Gaidin, or as Master Darrow, your choice. And what should I call you?" As he listened to the reply, he re-buttoned his shirt; the last thing he needed was any more grievances coming from Riahana.

Upon reaching the open door, Sigrid paused, uncertain whether she should go inside or wait. If she were at home, she wouldn't have hesitated- Borderlanders tended to be less formal than southerners- but she wasn't at home. Common sense dictated she should step lightly until she knew where she stood. She was outspoken and occasionally sharp- tongued, but not a fool.

A voice calling from inside settled the matter for her. "Come in. It's just me and the paperwork in here."

Well, that was easy, she thought, striding into the office, tossing her belled braids out of the way. Being Arafellin, she kept her hair in two long braids with bell attached.

Well, this is nice Sigrid thought, looking around. The room was cozier than she had expected, but still with a hard edge to it. There was a large wooden desk directly in front of her, with a fireplace behind it that was flanked by two large, ornate windows. Several bookcases stood against the wall. Still, it was more opulent than she was used to as a simple farmgirl, and she felt a little out of place. Better get used to it, Sigrid . From what she;d seen so far, this was the norm at the Tower.

Shaking off her discomfort, she took one of the chairs the Master of Training pointed at, eyeing the man curiously. He wasn't the most intimidating person she'd seen so far at the Tower, but he still didn't look like someone you wanted to cross. I wonder if he knows where my brother is? If Mathias had arrived safely, he should have joined the yards by now. She made a mental note to ask if she got the chance.

" My name is Ravak Gaidin, the Grey Tower's Master of Training. You may refer to me as Ravak Gaidin, or as Master Darrow, your choice. And what should I call you?"

Well, at least he gets to the pointt quickly. . She'd never had much patience with small talk. "Sigrid Kavaroy. Of Arafel. Here to join the yards." As she answered, she fingered her braids. She hadn't missed his eyeing the scissors when she jangled in. Well, Master Darrow, if you think to separate an Arafellin from their bells-or their braids- think again. She couldn't resist a little smirk at that thought, though she certainly wasn't enough of a fool to say it aloud.

OOC: If you didn;t want her to notice the scissors, I can edit the post, I just thought it was too good to pass up >>

Ravak
Ravak grunted, a noise that could be taken for acceptance or disapproval. Straight to the matter at hand. That pointed towards a disciplined mind, or a stubborn soul.

"Very well," Rav muttered, pulling open the left-hand drawer and producing a big leather ledger, protected by a blue dustcover. He opened the door onto a page already half filled in. The Warder Yards required information from every one of its recruits, and their signature, binding them to the will of the Grey Tower. The Gaidin spread the book over his desk, then picked up the quill. Dipping it once into the inkwell activated the ter'angreal, a near invisible line of ink transferring into the pen. Rav poised with the pen above the page, ready to add in information in his near-illegible scrawl.

The Shienaran's hard grey-blue eyes set themselves intently on Sigrid's face. "I have some questions for you, and I would appreciate a little more verbosity in your replies. What is it that brings you to the Grey Tower for training? Quite a distance to travel for training, and even if you're looking to become a Warder, the White Tower lies much further north. Do you have any training with weapons, beyond and/or including that blade by your side? And lastly, do you plan on becoming a Warder, with all of that entails; bonded to a channeller until the end of your day, or the end of theirs?"
OOC: Please make sure that you answer the questions posed above. Principally, make sure to state Sigrid's reasons for coming to the Grey Tower, and whether and why she intends to be an unbonded Gaidin or a Warder. If you have any questions for Ravak, feel free to ask in your response.

Oh, and the scissors are fine. We'll get to that in my next post. ;)

More verbosity? Sigrid thought. She thought she'd been verbose enough- what else did he need to know? Apparently, a lot more, given his questions. All of which should have been simple enough, but really weren't, at least not for her.

Well, why she'd chosen the Grey Tower over the White was easy enough- her brother was at the Grey Tower, so it just made sense to choose it over the White Tower. And the weapons question was simple- no, she didn't have any experience. However, the last question..... Am I really willing to bond myself to someone until death? It was a question that quickly brought home just what being a Warder was going to mean. It wasn't all adventures and glory- it was going to be living her life attached to someone, in charge of their protection, and possibly having to die for them.

Can I truly do that ?. She considered the question, running through all the pros and cons in her head. Sigrid wasn't prone to making snap decisions, or backing out once she'd promised to do something- Arafellins were known for their fierce sense of honor, and she was no different. She knew if she couldn't fulfill a warder's duties, she should leave know. It wouldn't be a bad life, certainly, and there was a great sense of honor in being a warder. Not to mention, Borderlanders had a healthy respect for both channelers and their warders, given that they were important allies in the fight against the Blight and Shadowspawn. And really, she didn't want to go home, or spend the rest of her life on a farm. The last was likely a superficial reason to become a warder, but there it was.

Finally, she shrugged. "I choose the Grey Tower, Master Darrow, because my brother- Mathias Kavaroy- is here also. It just made sense to join him here instead of going to the White Tower. And no, I don't have any weapons experience, except for knowing how to using a knife." And she wasn't especially good at that, but she certainly wasn't going to tell the Master of Training that. She touched the sword hanging at her side. "My father gave me this when I left Arafel, but I don't know how to use it yet. I want to learn, though." She'd tried the blade out a few times on the trip to the Tower- just swinging it about and poking it at imaginary opponents, but that hardly counted for anything.

The last question were going to be the most difficult. "Yes, I am willing to become a bonded Warder and even die, if necessary. I am Arafellin- channelers and warders are well respected among us. It would be a great honor to become a gaidar. And, if I am honest, I like the idea better than spending my life on a farm." She smiled faintly. "Nothing more lofty or noble than that, I'm afraid."

Ravak
Mathias Kavaroy. The name seemed familiar, and Rav returned to the start of the ledger. That sounded like one of the recruits that had arrived at the Tower during his time in the Three-fold Land. He scanned through the names in the ledger quickly, but found nothing. Must be in another volume, he decided with a nod.

The similarities between Sigrid and Rav brought a rue smile to the Master of Training's face. "My father also gifted me a sword, when I left Fal Dara." He pointed towards the stout sword-breaker on his weapon rack. "That must be a thing of the Borderlands, not that my father is Shienaran. Every man and woman needs to be a swordarm against the Shadow, thus everyone needs a sword." He scratched at his beard. "It's good to have a sibling with you. That keeps you grounded, not that I'm inferring anything, of course. But it helps maintain a healthy mindset."

Rav wrote down the details into the ledger, the multihued quill reflecting in the firelight. "Do not diminish the role or service of a Gaidar. It is noble to choose to become a Warder, for it is a sacrifice. We Borderlanders may have more common sense than southerners, for we are born knowing that we have a duty to fulfil, and we understand that the cost of that duty shall be our lives. We're proud to die facing off against the Shadow, to defend our homeland and the homelands of everything."

The Shienaran's face intensified, if granite could be said to intensify. His steely gaze stared unfocused through the office's wall. "But becoming a Warder is different; you have to set aside that duty. You are not a weapon against the Shadow; you are a weapon of your bondmate. Their duty becomes your duty, just as their life becomes your duty. You will sacrifice anything and everything to protect them." Sorrow-filled eyes moved to look at Sigrid. "And the pains they feel will be worse than anything you can endure."

He looked down at the ledger, checking that everything was filled in correctly. Happy enough, he turned the book to face Sigrid, offering her the quill. "Not everyone, in fact around half of those who become Gaidin do not bond. There is no disgrace or dishonour in that fact. We all serve the Grey Tower, and we can protect the Aes Sedai and Asha'man without the need for a bond. So whilst it's good you have foresight and have thought about it, it will not be a small decision to take, if you ever make it." Rav flashed a somewhat mournful smile, then barked a laugh. "Excuse me, it's been a trying few months. If you just sign here, then your service to the Tower can begin."
