“Remember to factor in not just the direction of the wind, but the force or speed of the wind,” Riahana instructed her daughter as the pair were on the archery range. She was working with Tia while waiting for one of the Drin’ to show up for an evaluation of her skill with the bow. For Ria, it was a chance to get out from behind her desk, and it was a perfect time to spend some time with Tia as she waited for her student to arrive.

Tia adjusted her bow slightly as she fired, but the arrow hit the very edge of the target, “Blast it!”

The Mistress of Arms stepped up along side her daughter, “But...don't overcompensate.” She looked to Tia and offered a warm smile. “I won't bore you with how long it took me to get to where I am now with the bow. It really does come down to practice, practice practice.”

The Accepted looked to her mother, unable to hide her annoyance, “I don't get a lot of time to practice, Mother. I will be lucky if I get a full hour each week.”

Ria looked to her daughter and arched a brow, “I am pretty sure you have more free time now than you did as a Novice, Tia.”

“Well. . .I do, but I have to focus on my classes. I have a much bigger workload,” Tia tried to explain.

Offering her daughter a warm smile, Ria replied, “Then make the most of the time you do get, love.” She nodded to the target, “Try it again. The wind is gusty today, so it will be challenging for you, but good practice.” As if to demonstrate, Ria went to the lane next to her daughter, pulled an arrow from the quiver she had on her back, set it on her bowstring, carefully took aim, making slight adjustments for the wind, then let loose. The arrow hit the center ring not a second later.

The day after Fiona’s arrival at the Grey Tower dawned clear and bright. Fiona had been up since long before the sun’s rays hit the roof of the Warder Hall, however. She had bathed, brushed her hair, straightened the chaotic mess that sleep had made of her curls, and inspected her new uniform with a seamstress’s critical eye before donning it and wincing at how poorly it fit.

Despite her nerves, she forced herself to eat a hearty breakfast. Then she found her way to the practice yards. She spent that morning in a series of exhausting, confusing, and frequently humiliating evaluations of her skill with weapons, knowledge of tactics, and other subjects that those training in the Tower were expected to know. Only the knowledge that the results of those tests would help build her skills in the future carried her through those unfortunate hours.

She walked away from her sword ‘evaluation’ with a crooked smile, swinging her arms back and forth. Lady Fiona Trakand, wielding a sword? Perish the thought! Her mother had been willing to tolerate many things, but that had not been one of them. The test had been over quickly, at least, which meant she could move on to something she actually did know: archery.

Approaching the range, she noted two women already there- one older, the other younger. The older was clearly demonstrating skill to the younger; Fiona watched without interrupting until they noticed her.

“Good morning, Riahana Gaidar,” she said, bowing formally, unstrung bow in hand. “I am Fiona, and I was told to come to you to show you what I know of archery.”

Riahana looked to the petite Drin’ and inclined her head in a slight nod, “Welcome to the archery range, Drin’far’ji. This is Accepted Tia Tomosan, and she will be practicing as you and I go through your archery evaluation.” For her part, Tia offered a warm smile to the new comer. Her mother gave no hint of their relation, and, at least for now, nor would she.

She glanced to the ustrung bow in Fiona’s hand, and gave a nod, “When you are ready, please string your weapon. As you are doing so, I would like you to tell me why you did not already have it strung before stepping foot on the range.”

Evaluations were different beasts to training spars. The key difference being the person being evaluated was supposed to demonstrate their skill with their chosen weapon. With sword, the evaluation could be in the form of a spar, along with the evaluator asking probing questions to get a feel for their student’s knowledge. For the bow, the evaluation would be more hands-off for Riahana. . .ultimately, it was up to Fiona to prove her skill.

“And once you’ve answered my first question, tell me why you’ve chosen the bow you have in hand. Can you tell me what other choices you might have had in selecting your bow?”

The sound of an arrow sinking into a distant target punctuated Riahana’s question as Tia turned her attention away from the new arrival, and continued practicing. She was still struggling in her effort to compensate for the wind, though this time, her arrow was within the outer circle.

Terric
OOC: Thanks for letting me do my eval here as well
Terric, sprinted to the archery range, re-curve bow in hand and quiver slung from his belt. Barely two days into his time at the Tower and the Master of Training had ordered him to report for an archery evaluation. He was off to a poor start, he had taken longer than he had expected to find a suitable bow. It wasn’t quite an Aiel horn bow but all the other bows in the armory were either awkwardly long or had an extremely low draw strength.

He skittered around the corner onto the range and came face to face with three women. If he was not mistaken, the slim Borderlander woman was the Mistress of Arms. Slim was probably a poor choice of words, sleekly dangerous, like a pit viper. That seemed right. Was she doing the evaluation? Why was he so worried? This was far from his first time holding a bow. Bows were however far from his strong suit. Aethan Dor found less use for bows in their normal duties than most other societies. He was determined not to be dropped into a class full of Wetlanders who were more likely to shoot the man next to them then the target. He’d rather not be shot by Wetlanders, not even by accident.

“Excuse me, Riahana Ferria Gaidar,” he was unsure the proper address for a full Gaidar so he erred on the side of formality and performed an Aiel bow, “Ravak Gaidin ordered me to report for an evaluation. I apologize for my latness, I have toh.” He scanned the other two women in the court yard. The taller of the two bore a resemblance to the Mistress of Arms, the other was colored like an Aiel. No Aiel had ever been that short though. He eyed the long bow in her hands with suspicion. If she could draw the thing, he would be suitably impressed.

Fiona
Fiona bowed to the Accepted, her small face calm, then reached in her pocket and pulled out the small oiled pouch where she kept her bowstring. As she extracted it, she saw a flit of gray out of the corner of her eye, and turned to look.

The man who approached was head and shoulders taller than she, with coloring not unlike her own. Unless she missed her guess or Synthia had terribly miss educated her, the man was Aiel. His first words, and the skeptical look he gave her, told her she guessed true. She bowed to him. “I am Fiona,” she said simply. Then she turned back to the Gaidar.

She fit the loop of the string around the bow, pushing it past the nock, then flipped the bow easily, slipping the other loop into the opposite nock. Once more she flipped the length of yew, and this time she stepped between bow and string, bracing the wood against her opposite leg and reaching up to pull the upper end down until she could pull the string into position.

The Aielman’s eyebrows had risen, as had the younger woman’s. She ducked her head with a small smile as she pulled her leg free. “No one believes I can string my own bow,” she commented, amusement coloring her voice. “I’ve grown used to it.” She turned her attention back to their evaluator. “My bow is made of black yew, made for me by a yeoman from the Two Rivers. Until I came here it was near irreplaceable and I would not risk losing my weapon out of laziness.” She clapped her mouth shut, then added. “To directly answer your question: It was unstrung because leaving it strung will damage the wood, resulting in poor performance at best and a fractured weapon at worst.”

She considered her bow. “As for why this bow…as I mentioned, it was a gift. When I received it, it might as well have been a walking stick, for all the good it did me.” Another ripple of amusement in her tone. “One of my moth- an archer I knew told me I should stop playing games, I would never be able to use a real weapon. I decided to prove him wrong.” Her chin went up. “Nowadays…I can use a recurve,” she nodded to the Aielman, “but prefer the strength and range of this one when hunting. I....suppose the same will be true in war, as well.”

She fell silent, suddenly uncertain. Had she been showing off? Did it matter if she had?

Riahana Gaidar (and a wee little observation from Tia)
Riahana turned her attention to the new arrival, greeting the Aiel Drin with a small nod before turning her attention back to Fiona. It was not hard to miss that Fiona was by far the shortest of their little group, yet she carried a longbow while the other three carried recurve bows. The Gaidar watched as the woman strung her bow with relative ease before she answered Ria’s questions.

Behind the Mistress of Arms, the Accepted took a break to watch the smaller woman string the longbow, and couldn’t hide her own surprise with the ease and skill shown by Fiona. She then looked to the newcomer, who towered over her mother, and if Tia had to guess, was about the same height as her father. The man’s unruly red hair seemed to stick out at all angles, and he spoke with intensity. What does he mean that he has toh? she wondered.

The Mistress of Arms gave a slight nod to Fiona, “Very well. Take the lane to the Accepted’s right, Drin’far’ji Trakand, and ready yourself to fire your first shot.” She then turned her attention to the Aielman, and noticed the bow he carried was already strung, “Your turn. . .first, tell me your name, Drin’far’ji, and then tell me why you chose the bow you did, along with your reasons for having it already strung, as I know we do not store our bows strung in the Armory.” She did not acknowledge his comment about toh, since she knew their sense of honor and obligation was far from straightforward, and she had no desire to offend him.

Shfiting her own recurve bow in her grip ever so slightly, Ria looked between both of the Drin’s, “And one last question for both of you. What are the advantages and disadvantages of your chosen weapons?”
OOC: So. . .Ria's bow is a black recurve yew bow, for what it is worth. It was a gift when she was raised to Ji' if I recall correctly.

Terric
Terric raised an eyebrow as the blonde Wetlander strung her massive bow. He would have been more impressed without the unnecessary flourishes. Wetlander nonsense. He practiced a discreet breathing exercise to bring his heart rate down, before he was asked to shoot his bow.

The Mistress of Training was addressing him now, “Your turn. . .first, tell me your name, Drin’far’ji, and then tell me why you chose the bow you did, along with your reasons for having it already strung, as I know we do not store our bows strung in the Armory.” She paused, glancing at their bows “And one last question for both of you. What are the advantages and disadvantages of your chosen weapons?”

“I am Terric of the Salt Flats Sept of the Nakai Aiel. This bow was the closest I could find to a proper Aiel horn bow. I strung several bow this morning to find one that fit my needs. They are all unstrung and stored, and that is the reason for my delay. I left this bow strung because it only makes sense. If I am carrying a weapon, I want it ready to be used.” He wasn’t sure why he had to explain that to the Mistress of Training, was it a Wetlander thing? But no, he remembered gnarled old Vishik doing something similar. The old spear master would ask a seemingly obvious question in order to see what kinds of answers his students would come up with. He was prepared for her last question, “The long bows, many Wetlanders favor, have impressive range and power. They are slow however and usually require a lot of strength and training to operate,” Terric glanced at the blonde woman with these words. He stood up straighter, ready to defend the idea of shorter bows. “Recurve and short bows lack the range of longbows, but make up for it with speed and mobility. A skilled archer can fire much quicker with a recurve than with a long bow. My people’s horn bows are ideal for skirmisher tactics.”

Tia observed both Drin’, and listened as the Aielman answered her mother’s question. She’d turned her attention back to her target and took a few centering breaths as she focused on what the wind was doing. Gusty as it was, the gusts tended to come from the northeasterly direction, and when it wasn’t gusting, there was a steadier breeze that needed to be accounted for.

Taking an arrow from her quiver and doing her best to pull the Void around her as her mother taught her, the Accepted nocked the arrow and started to draw back as she raised her weapon and took aim. Adjusting her aim and the pitch of the weapon, she waited for the latest gust to die down, and then released as she exhaled. A moment later, there was the distinct ‘thud’ into the target. The arrow was just left of the center circle, but it had been Tia’s best shot of the day. She couldn’t help her small smile before looking back to the two Drin’ her mother was evaluating.

The Mistress of Arms listened intently as Terric answered her question, though she gave little away in her expression. She wanted to see what both of the Drin’far’ji’s experience and expertise was so that she could better gauge what path of training they might need going forward. She gave a slight nod to the bow in the Aielman’s hands, “Given that you tested the draw strength to find a bow that was a good fit for you, I understand why you strung the weapon.

“Generally speaking, at the Tower, we do not string our bows until we are on the archery range, at the obstacle course or the archery sparring field, and we unstring them before we leave the range. Having said that, when I am on patrol, or even out for a ride in the countryside around here, I will have my weapon strung, and ready to go,” Ria explained, her tone matter of fact and even, without judgement.

Nodding to another empty lane, “Take your place next to Drin’far’ji Trakand, and I would like both of you to show me what you do next, assuming you have just arrived at the range, and strung your bow.”

OOC: For reference, I am following a bit of the archery course I run, but I won’t go lesson by lesson, I promise.Just being a thorough evaluator. :)

Fiona considered the Gaidar’s question, her fingers flexing on her bow as she thought. “My bow is simple to care for, easy to transport, and powerful,” she said, her affection for her weapon apparent in her voice. “I have seen men shoot up to three hundred and fifty spans with bows like mine. I….can’t. Yet, anyway.” She shrugged. “I enjoy the simplicity and power, but it is difficult to use while mounted- the length gets in the way and it’s hard to aim.”

She moved to the shooting line, catching the Accepted’s green eyes for a moment and giving her a friendly smile before turning to face away, her body perpendicular to the line drawn on the ground. She turned her upper body to face the target, lifted her bow, then drew the string to half-strength. Her muscles growled at her after the other abuse they had endured that morning, but the tiny Andoran just shook her head, letting the string relax, then pulling it back again.

Warm-up complete, she lowered her bow, reaching behind her to pull an arrow from the quiver she wore on her back. She set the arrow to the string, but did not draw or aim. Instead, she turned her attention back to the others. It was odd to be standing in line with an Aielman!

Tia had taken another bow from her quiver, nocked it and started to draw as she raised the bow to aim. The wind continued to gust from an easterly to northeasterly direction, frustrating the Accepted because she didn’t have quite the patience her mother did when it came to archery. She did take care to slow her breathing, and focused on the target, adjusting her aim to accommodate for what she hoped the wind speed and direction might be when she let loose the arrow.

Knowing it wasn’t good to hold the bow drawn for an extended period of time, the Accepted exhaled slowly and released the string in a fluid motion. The arrow shot off, and she watched as it sunk into the target, only slightly right of center. Not one to easily hide her emotions yet, Tia grinned, then looked to the Drin’far’ji named Fiona, and saw her smiling at Tia. Tia’s grin widened a bit, and she couldn’t help but beam with pride at the shot.

For her part, Riahana saw her daughter’s arrow land, and felt motherly pride well up within her. She inclined her head, “Well done, Accepted. Patience is not always an easy thing, but sometimes, in Archery, it can mean the difference between hitting your target or missing it. I know the Flame and Void is not routinely taught to Novices, but I would advise you spend more time with it, as you will find it can help your focus.”

Turning her attention to the two Drin’far’ji she was evaluating, Riahana nodded, “Once you have warmed up your weapon, please proceed and fire your first arrow. Once you’ve fired, tell me what you pay attention to as you prepare to fire. What are the key factors in whether you hit or miss the target?”
