Hymn of Creation [fanfiction]

The echoes of the Arches had started to haunt her sleeping moments, which was why she wasn't currently snuggled up safe and well in her own bed. Instead she was seated at her desk, attempting to make the words in front of her make some kind of sense, at the moment it wasn't working and instead of distracting her weary mind Betrys was faced with what could be best described at gibberish.
Groaning out loud, she slumped her head forwards onto the parchment.
"Git a grip, lass...." she muttered.
Not that is was helping. Betrys was glad and proud that she had become Accepted but it meant losing her room-mate. Actually chatting to someone about the things she'd seen might have helped her with dealing with it all. Sadly, that hadn't been an option for her right at the moment. Mirin had her own life and lessons - that hadn't changed from being Novices but at least at the end of the day they'd been able to share about the events and discuss plans and ideas for what would happen in the future. Now that had all changed.
Betrys was still coping with that "It was a vision. Just a vision, not real..." she whispered and pushed herself up to stand up. Starting to pace with the need to do something. She had all this energy running around in her head and body and it wasn't something that Betrys was prepared to deny any further, as it was getting to the point where it would start to seriously affect her work. That wasn't a good idea, she didn't want some well-meaning sister asking the sort of questions that she really didn't want to answer or consider. Betrys took slow breath and reached into the One Power.
This was the sole place and moment that she felt settled and reasonably like herself but she couldn't actually remain like it all the time.
That would also raise questions.
As the Power filled her senses, Betrys felt a a familiar tug and smiled. She walked slowly over towards the window and opened it carefully before she leaned out into the harsh cold of the outside. This was also new but it was a feature of the room that Betrys was incredibly pleased about, even if the distraction of the tug whenever she used the One Power made it difficult to concentrate sometimes - right now she didn't need to worry about that being the case.
Not at this time of the night.
Instead she smiled and looked down. The tree wasn't anything special but it was the one she'd made grow. That made it special to her personally and Betrys liked to look at it, even if at the moment she wasn't able to actually see the tree with her normal vision. The One Power was able to provide her the sight she wanted and perhaps this time needed. Betrys could tell the tree was starting to settle down for the winter and she found herself sad about that fact. She would miss the tree during the winter months and that was something that she would deal with in her own way, after all Spring and Summer would come around and the tree would return.
She started to sink past that initial view though.
Reminding herself that was a bad idea, Betrys moved back into her room and sighed "I need tae do something else! Why'd the Light show me that? Even ta suggest a thing like that" she muttered and started to walk to and fro, the sweet sensation of the tree reminding her not to dwell on things too much "Did that future happen? I mean...will it happen...Light above! Do all Accepted hae tae deal with this mess? I wish..." the snuffling as Betrys tried not to cry, was even more muffled and confused as she wiped at her face with the back of her hand. The action resulting in wetting the material of the nightgown that she worn.
Mirin had told it was terribly old-fashionable and completely unflattering as well. It was a thought that made Betrys smile, the fact her room-mate had seemed to believe that Betrys was actively attempting to dress as unfavorably as possible and was therefore being irritating had made it that much more amusing. Although she hadn't even given that sort of thing any consideration before Mirin had brought it up "Why didnae I see ya? Does that make her not part of the future?" she mused, Betrys hadn't been able to spend any time with her since receiving her new Rank. Both of them had been far too busy for simply catching up but perhaps she needed to make something of an effort to alter that fact.
After all it wasn't solely down to Mirin to step up and reconnect. That wouldn't be far, this friendship went both ways after all.
Or it should.
Distracted from her awareness of her surroundings Betrys ended up tripping over the rug in her room, stumbling and nearly landing heavily. She was sure that she hadn't been this clumsy before coming to the Tower - well probably not. The visions in the Arches had brought back painful memories and left her with questions that seemed to determined to bring her to her knees...now apparently physically. Betrys cursed under her breath before flushing "I'm a daftie! A serious mutton-head. This..." she snorted and moved to sit on the end of her bed in order to avoid actually succeeding in falling flat on her face as the result of all of this stupidity because of her current insomnia.
She eyed the cup of water at the side of her bed and rather that reach for it and attempt to renew her attempts to get any sort of sleep Betrys instead reached into the One Power, sinking into its embrace. She accepted the warm power and sighed, it was so peaceful here but she couldn't sleep like this.
It was tempting though.
Instead she drew herself in and pulled on the separate Weaves, allowing her instincts to once more shape and merge the collected aspects into one shining braid of Power that pulsed and reacted in her hands like some shining display of wonder. It was (for her at least) a living rainbow that delighted and caressed and in this moment drew Betrys in and under the landscape that she called home now. The Tower might inspire awe but the Earth beneath it had so much more that was deserving of that praise and bright wonder.
At least for Betrys.
It was full of song.
Not one though. There were different melodies and patterns, wordless and clearly not human but something that Betrys found herself unable to deny or ignore the beauty of in experiencing. She felt like she could so easily connect with this restful potential of power that lay in the land. It called out to her very soul, welcoming home fully and completed. It all made sense to her that she would be able to slip in and without thinking - something that Betrys would definitely have done normally if she hadn't been so tired - she used the braid of power and joined in with the singing of this land.
She sought out the gaps though, her conscious snaking along and slipping into those places in-between.
Betrys felt the greyness, the hollowness of the song that seemed to be incomplete and instead of avoiding or questioning what was going on or why that was the case in the first place. She flowed into that one section that above all the others whispered of need and longing for that bright song that had been stolen away. The weave she'd created allowed Betrys to do more than observe and she coaxed and caressed, there was never anything forced about any of this experience, instead it was as if she was learning to dance and needed only to remind her partner of the moves. As her energy and focus was used up, the space that had been hollowed filled up and started to answer her back with the same song that had captivated her attention before.
"Lovely..." she breathed out and opened her eyes into her own room.
She felt...restored. It was strange and right. She was also...tired. Which was great, the smile on her face remained as she lay down and closed her eyes to allow the sleep she'd been looking for seemingly for ages now.
Betrys would spend the rest of the night dreaming. It would only be in the morning when the whispers of how a patch of the gardens had suddenly broken out into flower - several months after the plants had been affected by a fungal infection that had killed off the bulk of them that she would start to put two and two together. It was even longer before she found some references in the library that revealed some idea of just what she'd done and how.
Earthsinging.
It looked an odd word on paper but as she said the word out loud, Betrys had to admit that it was very right.
