“Serine Sedai, I don't think she made it.”
Alric’s voice was not loud but the words seemed to echo like bells in Jaren’s head. He felt oddly detached, not quite processing what had just happened. Elise was actually dead. Someone he’d just met, someone full of life and mischief, murdered in broad daylight in the middle of the flaming Grey Tower. Surely that was not something that just… happened? Surely this had to be a dream?
But no, rationally he could tell that he was awake and that this was indeed happening. He followed Alric and Serine Sedai, as another Aes Sedai arrived on the scene with a pair of servants to collect the body and set the servants about cleaning the mess. Conveniently, the gathering of curious onlookers had all but melted away at the first sight of an Aes Sedai, though anyone passing by the scene slowed down and cast thinly veiled curious glances their way.
Alric was right, though; there was not much to be found back where the servant had bumped into Elise and — presumably — planted the needle. Jaren tried to rack his brain for any details about the murderer, but he really hadn’t thought the man particularly important at the time. All he could catch, though, was a vague image of someone very average in every way. “He was average height, I think, Aes Sedai,” he said with a small shrug; it probably wasn't too helpful but he tended to notice when people were much taller than himself and he hadn't registered anything of the sort with this man. Serine Sedai nodded absently, focused on something Jaren couldn’t see; maybe channelling, maybe just trying to find any physical traces of the killer.
“Why would anyone want to murder an Accepted?” He didn’t mean to voice the question but he couldn’t deny that he really wanted to know, wanted to make sense of what had happened. Even if Elise had been targeted randomly in an effort to sow discord or incite panic, why now? What was going on?
