Autumn Leaves in the City (Attn: Avyra)

Hama Valon, the city around the Grey Tower.
Forum rules
Welcome to Hama Valon! The aptly named 'mountain guard' is the city that has grown up at the gates of the Grey Tower at the western edge of the Two Rivers. Like all cities, there are quiet quarters with pleasant inns, such as Elman's Creek, which used to be the nearest village when the Tower was young, but was absorbed as the new city grew; its Band of Brothers Inn is still a favorite relaxation spot for many of the Tower's denizens. And again, like all cities the world over, there are less pleasant places--narrow, nameless streets that house hells and other houses of ill repute. Most of the city falls somewhere in between, with hawkers crying their wares in the streets, respectable shopkeepers ready to serve you, and petty cutpurses happy to follow you.

Novices, Soldiers, and drin'far'ji must be accompanied by a chaperon when outside Tower walls or they risk being picked up as runaways and duly punished.

Rav
"I bet people would line up for miles to ask." Avyra was trying to buoy his spirits, but it rang far from the truth. There were always channellers looking at the Gaidin and their students as they trained, but that was as far as it got with Ravak. Maybe it was because of his reputation earned from his absence, or from his former association with the Keeper of the Chronicles, or the fact he was desk-bound by the Mistress of Arms and his own title. It could be because he was young, because he was very young for the duties placed on his shoulders. The beard added some years, but Aes Sedai had keen eyes.

"What is it like, when you had it?" Rav frowned down in confusion, then thought back to what he had heard. The bond. That made him think of Elia, his 'bondmate'. His sister's presence was only the dullest of sensations at present, and he had to concentrate hard just to feel that. This pairing was completely different from his time with Kaia. He scratched his beard. He'd have to ask Elia to release him soon.

Avyra was waiting for his response.

"I give a little sermon every time someone comes to me about being bonded," he started. "Mention how it's the most important decision you'll ever make. It's not... not a decision you reckon you'll have a second pass at." He brushed at his shirt self-consciously. "It's completely exposing yourself to another person. Completely. You can't hide your emotions, your true emotions from your bondmate. The everyday diplomacy you enact with other people simply doesn't exist. Even if most Aes Sedai can't lie, everyone knows there are ways to bend words to your will. With the bond, even that is impossible. It's entirely unfiltered, all the time. You have to settle into an odd sort of bluntness, because lies as seen for what they are. You develop a new way of talking to one another, because so much can be left unsaid. It is exceptionally intimate. I say you will always be closer to your Warder than to your lover."

"And that's just one aspect, knowing what the other person is feeling. But those feelings can affect you too. If they're angry, you get angry. If they're sad, you get sad." He grinned at a fond thought. "If you get drunk, oh, they start acting the fool. You have to recognise that your health is their health, and vice versa. I assume you've heard about what happens when an Aes Sedai or Asha'man dies, or a Warder dies. Imagine feeling yourself die, but keep on living. Imagine losing half of yourself, but being forced to go on." His voice was cold. "When you bond, you are placing your life in their hands. They are entrusting their life with you. It is sacred." He offered a self-effacing smile. That had been quite sermonesque, and entirely without intention. At least I didn't mention anything about Kaia. That would have been an irredeemable oversight.

"I'm sorry if I went overboard on that. It..." Rav sighed. "It is my reason for being, after all. I feel incomplete without having someone in here." He tapped his temple, then rubbed at his eyes. "I think we're almost here," he said, intentionally looking to switch subjects.

Avyra listened. She didn't speak throughout his explanation, and tried not to think either. She just wanted to take in the information. Thinking would come after. Bonding would be very important later.

She wanted a bond. She knew that much. She fancied being able to share such a connection with someone. Someone to trust and to keep close. A very good friend. Someone who could always be there for her or she could always be there for.

Her first thought was Terric. But she didn't know if her Aiel friend would want to bond with her, or even bond at all. She probably wasn't good enough for him. She was too tiny, too weak. She wouldn't make it in his home. They were too different.

Ravak finished, and she only nodded. "I would like a bond. I just don't know. Its too early to think about. But its closer." She sighed. "I doubt anyone would want to bond me. I'm too much of a mess. I fall out of trees."

"I think we're almost here." He seemed to want a subject change.

Avyra perked up, smiling. "Oh good. I can't wait. Really, you should help me pick it out. I have a feeling you have a good eye."

Rav
The shop that Avyra and Ravak arrived in front of was inconspicuous. There were a series of small symbols above the shop's narrow door, denoting the crafts of its inhabitants. Rav had learnt most - goldsmithing, silversmithing, lapidary - but in accumulation it denoted a high level of knowledge, craft, and expertise. Rav led the way, opening the door to the sound of bells ringing.

The interior was nothing like the exterior. Heavy drapes covered the windows from onlookers, but the inside was lit up by a large number of candles and lanterns, set against mirrors to amplify the light. It was also incredibly clean, with the wooden floors polished to a sheen. Glass cases lined the walls of the shop, displaying an impressive amount of jewellery.

It wasn't all glitz and glamour though. In the space behind the door, hidden from view until one was indoors, was a guard. He was of a height with the Master of Training, with thick arm muscles but lacking elsewhere. Not a trained fighter, but a brawler. He held a heavy mace, banded with iron hoops. Rav had smelled the guard from outside. There was a good chance he had cracked some bones within the last day or two.

Ignoring the man, Rav moved over to one of the glass cabinets. I have a good eye? He didn't think so, but who knew? There could be something in that. Kaia had never needed help when it came to fashion or jewellery. It was the Red sister was the one that had got him out of the plain near-black uniform of a Gaidin, and into more form-fitting attire. Rav didn't know where to start. Where are the kesieras?

A red velvet curtain parted at the back of the store, revealing a tall slender woman in a dress of cerulean. She was from Arad Doman, as was the dress, and Rav felt the hairs on the back of his neck stir. As if thinking of a Domani would summon one. The shopkeeper took in Ravak, with his sword, then read in the banded dress that Avyra wore. "My lady," the shopkeeper said politely, as she bowed to Avyra. Rav held back a smirk. As a Gaidin, Rav had been trained at hiding in plain sight. Clearly the Domani had taken him for a bodyguard, whereas the Aes Sedai-in-training was a potential long-term customer for the taking. As she rose, the storekeeper asked "Is there something you're looking for today?"
OOC: I'll let Avyra diplomance the storekeep.

The store was not what Avyra expected, but trusting Ravak, she followed him inside, bells ringing to announce their entrance.

The shop was lit by candles and lowlighting, the windows blocked from the outside. For good reason. Everything was so beautiful and easily very expensive. Probably more than Avyra could afford. But she would stick with it, and see what they had. If it proved to be too much, she could always wait. A guard stood in the corner, watching them from the corner of his eye. He was as tall as Ravak Gaidin, but didn't have the same true air of danger that Ravak Gaidin gave off. His arms might have been as thick as her waist, but if he proved to be an issue, Ravak was there. She had little doubt that Ravak could take the man, her Power not needed.

Avyra looked around, eyeing all the jewelry. It was all beautiful, but she wouldn't be able to wear any of it yet, money or not. But she did know one thing. She felt so out of place in this shop.

A woman emerged from the back, tall and slender and beautiful. She bowed to Avyra, actually bowed to the likes of Avyra. "My lady. Is there something you're looking for today?"

Avyra smiled in return. "I am looking for a place to buy a kesiera. My friend here recommended this store. Do you have any? Something moderately priced. I don't have much to spend."

The lady smiled. "Yes. I do have a few." She paused, leading them to one corner of the shop. "They aren't exactly popular here, so I don't keep many in stock. But I can, if you want, specially make one if you don't see one you're looking for."

Avyra nodded. "Thank you. We'll call if we need anything."

The lady smiled and bowed again, returning to the back. Avyra looked to Ravak. "Well? What do you think?" There were two emerald ones, a few sapphires, rubies, and garnets. Even an opal and a rosy pink stone she wasn't able to name. "I love the emeralds. But I'm not too sure."

Rav
Rav's gaze lingered on the shopkeep as she guided Avyra to one corner of the store, and it wasn't solely out of concern for the Accepted. Domani women made a good show of themselves, and it was hard to deny the effort they put in. When she finally departed to the back of the store, Rav joined Avyra.

The shaggy-haired Gaidin didn't really know what he was looking at. Oh, of course he could name all of the gems and precious stones, but what did one look for in a kesiera? He'd never been to the city of Cairhein, nor met with any senior Cairhienin nobles. How low did they rest on the wearer's forehead? Was gem size an indication of stature or bearing? He'd only been privy to how nobles worked through the haughty brats that swaggered through his office door, or from the occasional encounter whilst he had been with Kaia.

"I may need to see you wear one, in order to judge." Rav smiled, not in encouragement, but at the peculiar situation he found himself in. He'd never assisted Elia in choosing what to wear, nor Kaia. Both women were quite confident in selecting how to present themselves. Avyra, for all of the lack of options she had, seemed to be struggling. Or she doubts even her own ability to choose a gemstone. Mirin had to instil more confidence in Avyra if she was going to make it to the shawl.

"How about that one?" Rav offered as guidance, pointing to one of the emerald kesieras. "See if it brings out your eyes?"

Avyra wasn't even sure this would look good. And Ravak was hard on trainees. Now, she wasn't one of his students, nor was she a Novice anymore, but she figured he would be frank and tell her how it looked, whether it be good or bad. She wanted the truth.

But she still didn't think she could pull it off. She had never tried to wear any, even though her family were jewellers. Her face probably wouldn't do it justice; she wasn't very beautiful.

"I may need to see you wear one, in order to judge." Ravak wore a warm smile, something that was startling to her. He was being very kind to her. She had never seen him this relaxed. Or rather, this relaxed towards her. He wasn't relaxed, that was obvious. He was a trained Gaidin.

"How about that one?" Trained Gaidin or not, he didn't seem to know what to do in this situation. "See if it brings out your eyes?" He had pointed to one of the emeralds.

Avyra nodded and called the shopkeeper over. The beautiful, regal woman strode over to the pair, unlocking the case and presenting the kesiera. It was harder to put on then Avyra had thought it would be.

When she was finished, she looked to Ravak. "How does it look?" She felt so silly. And absurd. This piece was probably worth more than she could afford. Even if it looked good, she would probably still have to leave it.

It was a smaller stone, fitted on a gold chain. The shop was a bit dark, but the lighting, when catching the emerald's green, reflected her own eyes almost perfectly.

Ravak Darrow
Rav tensed as the Domani got near again. As good as this shop was, he'd need to find another if he wanted to look at jewellery in the future. When am I ever going to need to buy jewellery for a woman?

"How does it look?" Rav drew his eyes away yet again from that scandalous dress. He wasn't here to ogle pretty women, although what am I doing did cross his mind. The kesiera he had naïvely picked out was now around Avyra's forehead. The emerald sat in a slim gold mounting, suspended from a gold chain. There was barely any natural light in the building, but her eyes glittered with the same luminosity and hue as the gemstone. It seemed to be a perfect fit, for a wonder.

"Yes?" Rav offered tentatively. Was a kesiera meant to compliment or stand out? Again he had questions about the placement and size of the stone, but no answers to hand. I feel bloody foolish is what's the matter. "Why don't you look for yourself?" There were a few small hand mirrors around, excluding all of the mirrors with candles or lanterns before them. "I think it looks nice." I sound like a babbling idiot.

As Avyra moved towards one of the mirrors, Rav stepped closer to the store's owner. "How much for the kesiera?"

Ravak really wasn't the best person for this, but he did show her the place, so she didn't mind. He was doing his best.

He directed her to look into the mirror herself, saying that it looked good to him but peobably not having confidence enough to actually tell for sure. So she looked, turning a bit to see it better.

Her eyes lit up. It was so pretty. It really brought out her eyes, and more importantly she figured it would draw anyone taller, so everyone, down to her face. Maybe it wasn't such a bad idea.

"How much for the kesiera?" Ravak asked. Avyra held her breath.

"Six gold, sir," the shopkeeper said, smiling. "Quite beautiful on that young lady there, isn't it?"

Avyra paused, feeling for how much money she had. Ten gold. This would cost more than half, and she didn't know when she would get anymore. But it was beautiful. And it made her feel good. So it couldn't have been so bad. Even if she couldn't wear it as an Aes Sedai, she still had it.

"I'll take it," she said, taking it off and holding out six of her coins. "Its wonderfully crafted. Thank you."

Ravak
A line of irritation wrinkled the Gaidin's forehead. He had hoped to keep his voice pitched out of Avyra's hearing. When the Accepted produced what had to be over half her gift from the Tower, he made a irritated tsking sound. Before she had an opportunity to hand the coin over, Rav wrapped his hand over Avyra's and closed it into a ball. "It is too much."

His comment was meant for Avyra, specifically that out of the money she had it was too much to go handing away in one go. However, the Domani took it as a reaction to her offer. "It is a fine price, sir." The Domani didn't sound offended; she was undoubtably used to haggling.

"I'm sure it is," he replied off-handedly. Avyra's face was building up to some outburst, no doubt due to his interruption. With his free hand, he scooped out a handful of coin, and began to lay it out in the shopkeeper's palm. "Four, five, there, six." As the last coin left his hand, he released his grip on Avyra's.

Six golden Hama Valon marks disappeared quickly into the Domani's purse. "I hope the young lady appreciates the gift." Rav turned back to the Accepted. We'll know in a second.
OOC: Let me know if you disapprove of Rav's interjection.

Avyra stared at him in shock as he told her it was too much, gently covering her hand with his. How dare he try to dictate how she spent her own money! She almost blew up at him. She was an Accepted, and still treated like a child! She didn't get a chance to speak, however.

"It is a fine price, sir." The shopkeeper's voice was even. Avyra noticed some movement; the guard had shifted slightly towards them.

"I'm sure it is." Ravak, still holding onto her hand, reached inside his own pocket and pulled out his gold. Avyra stiffened, eyes widening. What was he doing?! "Four, five, there, six." He handed him to the woman, releasing Avyra's hand.

"I hope the young lady appreciates the gift." Avyra's expression was unreadable, still offended by his controlling her spending and astonished that he would do something like that for her. But she smiled, eyes already wide.

"Thank you, Ravak Gaidin."
--
"What in the name of Light was that?!" Once out of the store, a very flustered Avyra had gone off. "I... I had it! I... you didn't need... I don't deserve..." Her face reddened, and she reached into her pouch to pull out six of the coins. "You didn't need to do that. Take it. I... I don't have anything else I want to buy. Its okay." She paused. "I mean... I am thankful, but you didn't need to. So take them."

Why had he bought her the kesiera? She didn't deserve it! Not money from his pocket!
