Jerid almost smiled at the thought of Riahana calling herself the older generation and then noting in the same breath that both the Indigo and the Amyrlin Seat were so much older.
He knew what it was like. Of those whom he recalled of his own Ajah, only Ilyria was still here. The First Seeker was perhaps less able to adapt than Riahana, if only because he felt the duties of his Ajah chafe every so often.
In a way he felt more akin to Gareth, to serve his Ajah rather than lead. He only answered the call to serve as Master of Soldiers because he knew well what it was like to be a part of the Learning Ranks.
He answered the call to the Keeper of Archives to protect Amora, more than anything else.
He left shortly after Amora and her kin did so, but long after Lysira and Cade had left his life.
“You're fortunate,” he murmured after a few moments. “As much as the heron mark speaks death, it also gives life to those who are wise enough to run.”
He smiled sorrowfully. “You deliver death with a blade to those who are both unjust and foolish enough to attack you and yours, or those under your protection.”
His gold-flecked green eyes danced. “When battle comes and I must face it, I paint and red is my only color,” he murmured. “Be it knife or the One Power, where I walk, blood flows freely because my family or my Tower is in danger. The Seanchan fared much worse.”
His lips twitched slightly. “Bryn knew all those secrets and never wavered. Cade never figured, despite his lessons and extensive reading. His father was the butcherer of thousands, whether by himself or on orders. I sent thirty Dreadlords to their graves alone … “
He stopped then. It had been more than two decades since the Oaths held any sway over him but he still spoke the truth. It was a failing that went far back into his past. And instinct took over.
“With respect, Gaidar, it would be best if I depart,” he murmured. “The less you know, the better your family is protected. You desire not the story of what became the demon of Ebou Dar.”
