“Welcome back, Drin’far’ji Danos. Our first lesson together demonstrated how to draw your blade, focused on footwork, and how to re-sheath your weapon. Today, we will cover some defensive moves, along with another guard stance,” Ria said by way of greeting. “There are a number of different guard stances, and I will show you those that I think are best suited for you at your level of skill. Once your lessons with me are complete, it will be up to you to continue learning other forms, and practicing them so they are second nature.”
Riahana moved her blade so the hilt was near the shoulder, and the point held vertically, “This is The Lion on the Hill, and it is a commonly used guard stance. You can hold the blade vertically like so, or pointed directly at your opponent.” She adjusted the blade so it pointed towards Danos, “Like this. As you go through the forms I show you today, I want you to transition back to this guard stance between each form.
“The first defensive move for today is a basic one, but it is important, as it is effective in deflecting your opponent’s blade,” she continued her instruction. “The Branch in the Storm is simply a high, horizontal slash used to deflect an approaching blade. Anytime you deflect another blade, be sure to do it with the flat of your own, so as to preserve the sharpened edge. You can move your blade left or right, depending on the direction of your opponent’s slash. As such, I want you to alternate which way you move your blade as you practice.”
Riahana went back to the guard stance, “The second defensive move is similar, though it is not one single horizontal slash. The purpose is the same, which is to deflect your opponent’s blade.” She then demonstrated The Falling Leaf and swept the blade back and forth, moving from high to low, “Notice how the blade moves back and forth, going from the high point, to a low point. . .much as a falling leaf would fall to the ground, which is where the form derives its name, The Falling Leaf.”
Once again Ria settled back into the guard stance, “The final move we will practice today is “The Sapling Trembles.” She went through the move slowly as she explained the motions, “It is nothing more than a downward strike at your opponent’s wrist. It is most effective when they have overextended themselves, and a good follow-up would be Arc of the Moon, which we will cover next time we meet.”
The Mistress of Arms went back to the guard stance, and then demonstrated each move once more. Between each defensive strike, she settled back into The Lion on the Hill, alternating whether her blade was held vertically, or pointed at Danos. “Aside from the guard stance, each of these is considered a defensive move. It is now your turn. . .practice moving through one to the other. Slowly at first, but as you are comfortable, pick up speed.”
