Welcome to the Gardens: one of the most tranquil areas of the Tower Grounds. Birds sing in the trees which line the wide paths between beautiful flower beds and serene lakes. There are benches to sit and listen to the waterfall, and there is neatly trimmed grass to lie on and rest. Novices and Soldiers as well as Warders in Training can be seen, sweeping the stone paths as Accepted and Dedicated study from books and relax under leafy trees.

Cheeks reddening at the apparent amusement his question triggered, Valadin was grateful for the opportunity to move on to other matters. The revelation that the middle-aged looking Asha’man was in fact a century old brought previously questions of what nature of changes the One Power would inadvertently cause in him. Looking over the man with eyes anew, Val could see that time had touched little save for the wings of grey that stretched over each temple; that and the sad burden of wisdom in his eyes collected over the span of decades. Instinctively his thoughts turned to the far younger looking Maegan Sedai. She looked as though she’d barely seen her twentieth summer though her effortless poise and controlled responses were alien amongst the young people that he knew; Valadin felt like a child in the company of both.

Many had heard the stories of the Aes Sedai whose schemes stretched over the span of many generations, but to find the rumor true…it struck a curious and unnerving cord in someone who still struggled to believe that the end times were drawing closer.

Legs folded beneath him, Val considered Durent’s words and questions carefully. Much of what the older Asha’man had said was true. Saidin’s power was a wild torrent that resisted being tamed. His lessons had comprised of little other than subduing that vast ocean, bending it to his will through concentration techniques. After his initial brush with the Power, Val had become dejected after numerous failures controlling it, but now he gradually began to understand that duty required him to overcome his misgivings. If the Pattern had really weaved this path for him, then he would see it to its conclusion. No matter the cost.

“I’ve…well I’ve become quite good at weaving Fire. Most other flows are a bit tougher to manage though I’m among the best at creating Light out of our lot,” Val answered Durent.

Talking about Saidin usually proved as difficult as actually holding it; memories of failure often making the subject a sore point in conversation. Perhaps it was this that turned Val’s thoughts towards the Sister once more. She’d learned to channel some other than the Grey Tower—she’d been to the White Tower. “Maegan Sedai?” he started, curiosity overwhelming better sense, “You come from the Tower? The White Tower? What was it like? Are the stories about Sisters serving the Dark One true?”

The questions would’ve continuing coming forth had not the looks on both Maegan and Durent darkened so abruptly, “Something I said?”
OOC: Well according Jordan, usually when people channel for the first time without training they feel sickness after and also might go through some spans of uncharacteristic recklessness. That was the experience Val was referring to; it goes away and isn’t caused by the taint. Women supposedly go through it as well though it’s usually more prevalent amongst wilders. Also sorry for the mix-up on the IC character name. :P

Maegan Ryanne Image
She gave an easy nod to the Asha'man, giving him affirmation to his question. Allowing Valadin a chance to answer in return. The youth were always so quick to comment and share their thoughts. Age had given Maegan a great deal of patience and she did not mind at all to see the enthusiasm of the youth. It was such a nice thing to see, let alone see how different the Grey Tower dealt with their learning ranks then the White Tower or the Black. But his quick to assume that the White Tower followed the shadow did bring her to to appear less than amused even if her smile never faltered.

"No more than the Grey Tower, Soldier Valadin." She said, her voice was still light and kind. "I had served there for over a century myself before I was forced to leave. Many served the light, many still served selfish desires. Who was to say whether those desires were self serving or for the Shadow."

OOC: Oh, gotcha. Makes total sense. :)

IC:

Durent kept his smile to himself at the Soldier's bluntness. That was something that might get him into trouble, but for Durent it was refreshing. Too much half-speak happened among the channelers here anyway. It would serve him well in the Green Ajah if that's what he ended up joining. He turned his attention back to Maegan.

"I assumed as much. You'll find no hostility from me, assuming you're not going to try to gentle me," he said with a wry smile, letting her know it was in jest.

He looked over at Valadin's question, "Many do not wish to speak of their existence, but to me that willful blindness is dangerous. I can tell you from personal experience that the Shadow's reach is everywhere, unfortunately. Wherever there is Light, there will be Shadow, and you'll find no greater lights at the Grey Tower, and the White Tower also, I imagine."

“Right…of course, Maegan Sedai,” Valadin responded, his previous enthusiasm tempered by what he could tell to be an admonishment in context if nothing else.

She’s quite pretty, but…sometimes I wonder… Val couldn’t help thinking. He did like Maegan Sedai a great deal. She possessed an innate knowledge of the world though he’d not spoken to her more than a few moments. It was just an aura that surrounded her; her poise lent itself to projecting her as someone who knew about things—things most people would never learn in a lifetime.

Durent Asha’man and the Sister shared a brief exchange though their focus as it frequently had during the conversation once again rested upon Val. The weight of their combined gazes and knowledge made him want to shift in seat, but he remained calm and still. Much of what he’d learned about intimidation was that it was only effective when the recipient perceived it as such. As he kept his wits, all would be well. Sides they don’t seem like bad folk.

The older Asha’man held an air of wisdom that was different from Maegan Sedai’s book knowledge. His seemed the sort that was attained from experience. The lax, but sure nature he carried himself with seemed born from years of worldly ventures which culminated in the man that sat peacefully amidst the Tower gardens. Seeing such refined individuals Val wondered what sort of persona they saw in him. He doubted he portrayed the same sense of the world as Sister Ryanne and the rugged serenity of Asha’man Durent seemed altogether beyond him. Likely they think you little more than a goat-brained child. After all they’ve been alive centuries. You’ve just made your twenty-fifth summer this year.

It was a sour thought to entertain whatever its truth, but a breeze blew from the direction of the falls and in its winds the remnants of the spray washed over Val dispelling the ill concerns. Closing his eyes, he could almost smell the water and taste its wetness on his tongue; both would’ve been welcome experiences given the heat of the day. Sweat ran slick down his arms despite having worn the sleeveless tunic for such a day.

“I imagine this would be the perfect place to grow Goldenthorns or maybe even Loverknots, though it’d be tough to keep those alive in the winter. They’re really fickle things when it comes to weather and they don’t do much good as gifts if they ‘ent bloomed properly.”

The comment was odd he knew, but Val was comfortable around the two. They’d taken the time to speak with him, a trait most of their kind didn’t share.

“I’ve never had anyone to share moments like this with…the Tower seems so lonely despite having enough people to overrun Hamma Valon and beyond. Just don’t bloody get it sometimes…” he muttered. He’d only just spoken the words when the slip of the tongue was noticed. “Ah…my apologizes Sister…Asha’man. Not much fer refined company…sometimes I forget myself. Please think nothing of it. I-If you’d prefer I can be on my way; about supper time anyway.”

OOC: Sorry for the delay. Was trying to get myself together this week.

Maegan leaned back, showing a little relax in her posture, and looked over the garden through her spectacles. "The gifts of Saidar and Saidin are really quite remarkable. A former sister of mine just have a way with the flora. A green thumb in a red shawl, she was. She could grow anything anywhere and keep it alive year around and those that didn't she said it was because they needed to rest and next thing you would know they would be blooming larger and brighter then the season before."

Durent joined them at looking over the gardens. He was glad they shared in his appreciation of the place. There were many that didn't, thinking it a waste of time. "I couldn't agree more. There is a reason this is one of my favorite places in the Tower. I would come here as a new Soldier almost every night to be close to nature and decompress from the stress of my training." The main reason, of course, Durent had felt comfortable in the Gardens was because for years before coming to the Tower, he'd lived in the wilderness on his own, travelling the world.

Durent glanced over at Valadin. The lad seemed to be struggling with wanting to remain and also obviously being stressed by his and Maegan's presence and unintentional, but unavoidable, intimidation. He completely understood. He'd been approached by an Aes Sedai in the Gardens early on in his life here too and had no idea what to make of her at the time. "I certainly won't force you to stay, Valadin. You wouldn't want to miss supper, but I'll leave the decision up to you."

OOC: Sorry it's so short, wanted to get something in before leaving work.

“By your leave then, Asha’manAes Sedai,” Val replied uncertainly. He ran a hand through his scalp, feeling the wetness of his hair with his fingers. Even the nights at the Tower were uncomfortably hot; he really needed to learn the trick behind the Aes Sedai and Asha’man’s apparent resistance to perspiration.

Even so Val was loath to leave the setting. They had both been kind to him and he’d earnestly enjoyed their company, but the sun’s fiery face had fallen well beneath horizon. Supper wasn’t something he was overly concerned about missing and would have rather spent it here in the calming ambience of the Gardens, but there were assignments that needed attending to. As things stood he had earned quite a reputation as a Tower student—despite his other shortcomings. Some of the Dedicated had spoken to him of something called a Raising, a ceremony of sorts which promoted him to the next rank. Val had pressed for further details, but they wouldn’t give him anything more than it was rite earned by the most worthy. It also seemed unusual that someone who’d been at the Tower for less than a year was being considered for such.

Rising to his feet, Valadin took a last look towards the falls which roared distantly. The pure might of the crashing water was apparent even from afar. Maegan Sedai was right. Saidin can be just as powerful…more so even. Gooseflesh rose on his skin as he considered that he would soon wield that destructive power in the Last Battle. Could such a force really be controlled? Would he be able to do it?

Turning from the waterfall he bowed respectfully towards his company. Sweat had soaked through most of his tunic and he was certain it was a fine sight, “Thank you for your time. It was…nice. I hadn’t been sure what to make of it all, but I rather enjoyed the peacefulness of it. I’ll be going now. My duties aren’t quite over the evening. Light shine on both of you.”

Waiting as was expected of him until they gave respective approvals of his departure, Val headed towards the path that he’d come by, but before leaving the clearing he stopped.

“Durent Asha’man? By your cord, you’re of the Green, yes? I was wondering if you knew anything about Battle Weaves? I learned of them in one of my lessons, but none of the Dedicated know much about combatting with the One Power. Might you know of this subject? Or even yourself, Sister Ryanne?” he asked.

Maegan Ryanne Image "I am familiar with combat using the One Power. Not nearly to the extent of anyone from the Green Ajah, however." She said smoothly. The fact that she specifically trained to battle with the One Power against those that channel Saidin might raise an eyebrow. It was not the same as battle weaves, but it was certainly noteworthy to many. Not that she could really hide it if one were to listen to the rumor mill. "My specialties are in Ter'Angreals and a little of Illusion and Warding. " Maegan said, a truth even without the Oaths on her skin. Skipping over the question that was not a question to whom she owed loyalty. "This has been quite pleasant and perhaps one of the nicest conversations I have had since arriving. I will not keep you from your meal, Soldier Valadin, but you are free to call upon me for a conversation at any time, if you wish. And you as well, Asha'man Durent."

Durent noticed the sweat slick of the young soldier, grateful that he himself had long ago learned the trick of ignoring the heat. As the soldier stood up to leave, Durent gave him a respectful nod of acquiescence to his request to leave and join those at dinner. Durent saw something in the young lad that he liked and respected. He wasn't always good at reading people, but this young man seemed similar to Durent on a few levels and that helped. He would watch his development with interest.

When the subject of battleweaves came up, Durent was intrigued again by the young man, and some of his intuition was proven correct. "I do know of using the One Power in combat, and it is something I train in regularly. You'll find it is quite common among Greens. My Talents in Cloud Dancing and training in battleweaves have given me quite proficient use of lightning bolts and fire attacks. If you are looking for training in this area, I would be most willing to instruct you. Just know it is not something to be entered into lightly, and should wait until you are at least a Dedicated."

Durent leaned back and stretched his back in his sitting position, deciding if he would stay a bit longer, after they had left, or remain. He would have something brought up to his personal quarters later in the evening after a sparring match, he decided.

"This was a nice chat, I appreciate the company of both of you. You are also welcome to call on me any time. Maegan Sedai, I would, if you would permit, enjoy talking with you about the White Tower sometime, and Valadin, if you ever need assistance of any kind, you can find me in the Green Ajah halls.

Both Asha’man and Aes Sedai spoke of familiarity with Battle Weaves. Their knowledge made Valadin question whether returning to the Tower was the correct decision. Looking into the distance he found the sun had retreated beneath the horizon, the only token of existence the fiery blaze that splashed across nearby clouds. Evening would soon find its purchase and the Master of Soldiers would have Val’s hide if he was late for supper—much less curfew.

Past transgressions had left little slack to fall back on when facing the wrath of his superiors. Most Dedicated had made a sport of catching him in the act of some violation of Soldier protocol. No, I’d best get back. Even the protection of an Asha’man and a Sister might’n be enough to fend off trouble when it comes looking fer me. Val decided.

“Walk in the Light!” Valadin called.

With a final wave farewell, he set off towards the trail leading back to the Grey Tower. Behind him the dull roar of the falls served to mark the clearing as a special place for him; here was where he had met two of the best of his kind. Before him the Tower glowed with a dull orange as the sunset’s dying light bathed it in fading radiance. Aside from its size, the structure was imposing even from afar making Val question how he’d ever gotten lost in leaving it. During the trek home, heat crawled on his skin like a living thing and before long the only choice left to bear the journey was to remove his tunic. As the brutal sunlight faded and the night drew its cooling curtain on the world, Val savored the breeze stroking his torso. So much so that he remained shirtless even as he entered the mess hall where his peers supped.

A fewer of the nicer Soldiers mockingly called out to him while the majority simply grumbled about his foolishness before returning to his meal. Only the Novices and the sparse smattering of Accepted that infrequently dined with their lower ranked peers shot silent, baleful glares in his direction as he gathered the humble dinner of lamb and jelly with a cup of broth before seating himself. Val’s mood couldn’t be ruined by them—after all Maegan Sedai was prettier and smarter than the lot of them combined and she liked him…at least he thought so.

That night as he lay in his cot, thoughts of the paths that the Sister and Asha’man had taken to reach their present strata rumbled through Val’s mind. He wondered if by following his duty he could become an honorable fellow like Master Durent, self-assured and strong in his bearing. I bet he never has anyone pick on ‘im. Light, who’d be fool enough to pick on an Asha’man let alone Master Durent! A smile stretched his lips as he imagined adventures where he journeyed far and met women who looked like Maegan Sedai, their pretty faces smirking coyly at him as he wooed them with his masculine charms. It was to these thoughts that Valadin finally drifted to sleep. That night proved to be one of the few peaceful that he’d enjoyed since coming to the Grey Tower.
OOC: As I said in the PM: Awesome thread! Hopefully we get to do it again. Thank you both so much!
