The Day of Kittens [ATTN: Open!]

Post by Bella » November 19th, 2021, 9:38 pm

!

OOC: This thread is open to everyone. There's only one rule: no kittens or cats may be injured!

~*~ Prologue: The Kittening ~*~
The Grey Tower, nestled in the Mountains of Mist for generations upon generations, stood as a bastion of the Light. It had withstood countless trials and attempts by their enemies, minions of the Dark One and regular human beings alike, and it would withstand countless more. The Tower, ensconced by the still-growing city of Hama Valon, stood for equality, it stood for righteousness, and it stood for honor and glory and those who would stand before the encroaching end-times like stanchions of all that is good...

The Grey Tower...also a place where really weird shit happens sometimes.

This was one of those days.

What really no one had been aware of, for reasons surpassing all understanding in the middle of the yards where men and women were trained in hyper-vigilance, was a cat colony. Even after all that would shortly come to pass, no one could seem to find exactly where their stronghold was. The only thing that everyone knew was that, like all small mammals--and as some would say, a handful of two-legged mammals in the Tower walls--they had been breeding prolifically. How did this knowledge come to be discovered, when no one even knew there was this many cats hidden away in the Warder Yards or surrounding buildings?

Well, it was the kittens.

Several litters, although a proper count was impossible at first, had all come of tiny kitty age at the same time and all gained both a curious nature and the permission of their mothers to head out into the world and do...

...whatever it was that cats did.

Suddenly, it was a kittenpocalypse.

Coming from various places around the perimeter of the yards, although not near the training/sparring sands as yet, came dozens of little cats. Short-haired. Long-haired. Orange, grey, brown, black, white. Some colors that seemed like they should exist on a creature, and others seemingly without any hair. They waddled and mewed and trotted up to anyone they saw, as they apparently had no fear of humans instilled in them yet. The warder yards and Tower itself were safe, defended places after all. These cats had undoubtedly been well-fed and unbothered for all their short lives.

So began the story of the Day of Kittens.

Natlya Cade Gaidin
Like all Gaidin in the Tower that were not otherwise busy with their bond-mates, Natlya was in the yards that day with the trainees. She had been covering for the unarmed class and busy throwing young men and women over her shoulders or sending them flying back over her hips. Either way, a lot of trainees were ending up on their asses. It was to be expected, though, because this class was full of those just beginning their lessons and they still had a lot to learn. She knew that one never really stopped learning, but they had only really begun.

"What's that?!" a young woman with dark hair and dark eyes, currently on her back in the sand, said as she pointed.

Natlya had seen this trick before, but there was something thoroughly sincere in the girl's expression. The red-haired Gaidin skipped back a few steps to be out of reach of a trick and then took a quick look over her shoulder. She realized, quickly, that the sincerity was, well, sincere.

"What's that?!" Nat exclaimed.

Darthalien stopped at the edge of the Yard. This was not where he needed to be right now; he was supposed to be in the kitchens, starting on his chores. Clearly, this was the wrong door. Just as clearly, he was hopelessly lost -- again -- and asking for direction was going to be just as much of a problem as it had been the last two times. Something nudged against his boot and he froze, then looked down and shrieked.

There was a pisicuţă leaning against his ankle, and more behind it. This was exactly the sort of situation that sensible people avoided, because pisică were notoriously protective of their young, and sensible people generally avoided doing things that would get them ripped in half. Only this pisicuţă didn't seem to realize that, and now that it had his attention other were moving in from various directions.

He managed, by extreme effort of will, not to panic further. That would only make things worse. Instead, he eased his foot away, and then took a long step away from the Tower and into the yard. He was already cut off from the door; there was no escape that way. He was going to have to find some way around, before the pisică arrived to rescue their offspring.

Darthalien, he told himself, ați făcut greșeala clasică. Ați ieșit din adăpost și în pericol. Există acum înapoi de aici. And the pisicuţă were following him.

Kalyan Rihera, Dedicated
A quiet hiss distracted Kalyan as he walked past the Warder Yards. Instead of continuing on his way back to the Tower, he stopped and moved to the side of the path he'd been on, looking around for the source. He heard it again just as he laid eyes on a tiny grey and white kitten standing in the grass. Its back was arched, its tail was raised, and its eyes were locked on Kalyan. The Dedicated smiled down at it, then crouched down and held out a hand.

"I bet you're not supposed to be out here," he said to the kitten. The animal didn't move, but instead hissed again. "Oh, I won't hurt you," Kalyan continued on as he inched closer. "I just want to get you back where you belong." The kitten growled softly, and Kalyan reached forward, grabbing it quickly with both hands. His reward was a flurry of kicking feet, sharp claws, and equally sharp teeth.

"Ow!" he protested, but didn't let go. Instead, Kalyan waited patiently for the little kitten to wear itself out. When it was at least a little less wriggly, he stood and carried it back in the direction it had come from, towards the entrance to the Warder Yards. They weren't somewhere Kalyan often had reason to be, and though unfamiliar, the Dedicated was pretty sure that what he saw as he looked into the area was not as it should have been. The Yards were full of kittens! Some were as small as the one squirming in his arms, others larger, and they were every color he'd ever seen on a cat. Even stranger was the sight of some of the Gaidin standing around as if they weren't quite sure how to handle the onslaught of baby animals.

"Well, this must be where you belong," Kalyan muttered to the kitten he held. He'd meant to let it go, but looking around at the chaos, he was reluctant to add to it. Instead, he tried to pet the kitten's head, and barely managed to pull his fingers away from the snapping teeth in time. Where in the Light did all these kittens come from? he wondered. He didn't get the chance to try to think of an answer before he heard someone scream.

The Dedicated rushed into the Warder Yards, heading in the direction of the man he'd heard cry out. He was one of the most unusual looking people Kalyan had ever seen. I wonder where he's from? He was also surrounded by more than a few kittens, and looked as if he wasn't sure how to get away from all of them. Kalyan stepped carefully around the kittens as he approached.

"They're just kittens," he said to the man. "You can walk around them, they won't hurt you." Of course, the grey and white kitten, which Kalyan had thought finally calmed down, chose that moment to twist around and sink its teeth into his hand. Wincing, he pulled the kitten closer to his chest before it could fall from his arms and get hurt.

For a moment, Darthalien just gaped. One of the... Dedicated? He thought he had the uniform right... was approaching, and the man was blithely carrying a pisicuţă. In his bare hands! "Pune aia jos!" He shouted, still edging away from the approaching pisicuţă. "Esti nebun? Pisicile te vor ucide!"

The Dedicated outranked him; he was supposed to follow their instructions. Only he couldn't understand more than one word in three. How had that Brown said it? "Danger!" he managed.

Over the course of just a handful of minutes, there were more people around the training yard than there had been a few heartbeats ago but all of the kittens were still there. It wasn't a hallucination on her part or that of the trainee, because it was clear that everyone else here was seeing them too.

The visible reactions were...mixed, at best.

"Everyone!" Nat shouted in her best Gaidin Captain voice, trying to get the attention of the Gaidin and the trainees and...all the new guests. "Calm down and stay still for a moment. We seem to have..." She felt tiny pinpricks on her leg and looked down to see an orange kitty climbing up her trousers. "We seem to have a cat problem. We need to gather them together before they get hurt but we need to be calm about it."

Darthalien was still backing away from the advancing pisicuţă when a sharp, commanding shout cut the air. He couldn't understand the words, but he turned automatically; with that much authority, it sounded like a Weaver.

The woman who had shouted wasn't a Weaver, clearly; she wore training clothes and stood in the center of a practice circle. Weavers had no need of weapons; that was what their Daggers were for, so this, clearly, was a Dagger. For a moment he thought she was calling them to some defensive formation, but no. He caught the words for calm and hurt, but surely she couldn't be suggesting that they could avoid being hurt by remaining calm? The very idea was madness. A full-grown pisică was half again the mass of an adult armsman, and if the came in a swarm to match the number of pisicuţă here, no in this yard would survive.

Desperate, he reached for the Dark Power... but the sun was in the sky and he could barely even sense it. He'd hoped to make some sort of wall, or find some way to soothe the coming beasts, but it was hopeless. Even if he could touch the Dark Power, he didn't know how to do anything with it. Instead, he drew the dark-handled dagger from his belt. That, he knew, was equally futile, but maybe he could get a blow or two in before the pisică tore him in half...

One of the pisicuţă rubbed against his leg again, and he shuddered. There was no point in attacking them; that would only make it worse when the grown ones came. He wished he knew why they were acting so cursedly friendly -- he didn't smell of raw meat, or blood, or bone gruel, or any of the things that the pisică liked. He looked at the Dedicated beside him, and said: "Va fi mai bine dacă ne întoarcem înapoi la spate." Maybe the Dedicated could protect them and he could watch the man's back. Even if he was still holding a pisicuţă.

Dedicated Kalyan
Kalyan didn't understand a word the white-haired man said, except for the last one. Is he afraid of the kittens? That much seemed obvious. He looked at the other man and petted the grey and white kitten on the head, stopping when the animal hissed at him again. "It's only a kitten," Kalyan told him calmly. "They aren't dangerous." He looked around the Warder Yards, trying to find somewhere to put the kitten down, but every nearby space looked to be occupied by cats already. The Dedicated blinked as he continued to study his surroundings. Are there more here than there were earlier?

Something had to be done, but Kalyan had no idea what that something was. He was relieved when a Gaidin's voice cut through the chatter of others who sounded as confused as he felt. The command to gather up the cats made sense, but still didn't answer the question of where they could all go. Before he had the chance to try grabbing another kitten, the pale man looked at him and said something. Once again, Kalyan couldn't make sense of the words, which were nothing like those of the only language he knew. He shook his head and said, "I'm sorry, I don't understand." A part of his mind wondered if the man was speaking the Old Tongue. He hadn't thought people spoke it any longer, but it was the only language he knew of besides his own. Even if it is the Old Tongue, he observed to himself, I don't know more than a few words of it.

He smiled kindly at the other man anyways and said, "We need to gather the cats." As he was speaking, another kitten brushed against his leg, and the Dedicated stooped down to pick it up. This one was all black, a little larger and calmer than the grey and white one Kalyan still held in his other arm. Since the white haired man appeared to be frightened of the kittens, Kalyan wasn't really expecting him to help. He turned around and headed towards the red-haired Gaidin who'd spoken as the grey and white kitten began to squirm again. For something so small, it still got a couple of good kicks into his side, and Kalyan wasn't sure how he'd managed to keep hold of both kittens by the time he reached the Gaidin. He bowed and said, "Here's two....but where are we going to put them all?"

Darthalien winced as the Dedicated scooped up another pisicuţă, but lacking any better idea he followed the man towards the woman who'd apparently taken charge. Should he try to pick up one of the pisicuţă himself? Maybe the pisică wouldn't attack if it would risk injuring their young? He didn't think that would work, but...

...At some point he was just going to have to trust that the people here knew what they were doing. Steeling himself, he put the dagger away and reached down to pick up a pisicută.

Blood and bloody ashes, where are they going to go?!

It was the question foremost on everyone else's mind as well, which Nat could guess if she stopped to figure out what everyone else was thinking, but she focused on her own mind first. There were...dozens of these creatures! She needed to know where they were coming from, but she first had to figure out where to put them to. They were disrupting the entire yard.

"I need someone to make a run to the Infirmary," Nat called out next, "and find Gareth Asha'man or Isla Sedai." She knew they both had some skill in veterinary medicine. Her hazel eyes were already darting around the yard as she spoke. There was a small wagon nearby that had been used to bring in sandbags, but it was empty now and the sides were pretty high and wooden. Not easy to scale. "We need to put the kittens in there." She pointed to the wagon.

OOC: Anyone is free to run to the infirmary and get one of my characters lol and others can start gathering kittens. Darthalien is welcome to come up to Nat and she can try to talk to him directly too. :)
