I Have Complaints [Attn: Barad Asha'man]

Post by Bella » May 28th, 2020, 12:11 am

There is nothing left to say...

It had been one week since the funeral. He had spent most of the past ten days with his children, grieving and trying to heal--or at least begin to heal--but it was hard. So many decades of his life had been spent with his wife-warder at his side, and now she was gone. It had not been a blaze of glory but simply...time. The curse of time that sat upon all channelers.

Today was the first day that he had been back to work in the infirmary, and it was comforting on the one hand while it was all done in a haze on the other. He resigned himself away from actively treating patients because he knew his concentration was not full again yet, but he needed to be doing...something instead of wallowing in his quarters thinking about the giant hole in his existence.

That was what kept him at that table in the back, grinding herbs for salves and poultices or preparing fresh herbs for drying and storage. He kept his focus so intent that he didn't even hear someone coming up behind him...

Barad made his way through the Infirmary, nodding to those he knew, but knowing better than to stop them mid-whatever they were doing. No one ever came through here without a purpose, and unless you had an issue, it was usually better to leave others be, and not disturb the trains of thought. Like him today, he had a purpose, and not one he would have thought he would be sent on. Well, not on the reasons he would have thought anyway.

When he had been called to the First Weaver, he had been concerned, but the duty he asked of him had been simple enough, though he had questioned Maever about it. Why him? He had never been Bonded, he had no wife or children, how could he know the man's pain? And Maever had simply stated that he was not a woman, and had never given birth, but he helped with that all the time. Barad could not argue such logic, but this was more delicate in a different nature than childbirth. But still, he could not turn down an order for the First Weaver, so he was to do as he was bid.

He found Gareth in the herb room, not surprising, as no one would think he ready to treat anyone yet. He stood there and moment, and coughed slightly before speaking. "Gareth, it is a good to see you." He said simply, and moved to join him at the table. He looked at what the other man was doing, and picked up a bundle of Heart-Leaf and began to in them with string to hang and dry. They kept it for the Aes Sedai that did not wish to start a family, and to dose stupid Accepted who they suspected were sleeping with men. "How are the children?" Though not actual children now, they would always be thought of as such to his generation in the Tower.

"Hello, Barad," the mountain of a man rumbled quietly, inclining his head in greeting to his Yellow Brother. The man's presence was not a surprise, really, because he was not the first that had been sent Gareth's way. He knew the process, since he had been a part of this "caravan of care" a few times for others.

He wrapped a string around the end of another bundle, focusing on tying the knot there more than could possibly, reasonably be expected to put into it, then he hung it on the drying rack. Methodical. Woodenly. One piece of the task after another.

Gareth nodded slightly in response to the question. "They are as well as could be expected," he said. Although his voice was quiet, there was no escaping a certain echo of rocks rolling down over rocks. "It was not unexpected, after all. Gaidin tend to decline quickly after a life unnaturally prolonged by the bond." He spoke in a clinical way, like he was discussing it with a class, but he didn't look at Barad. To meet another human's eyes was usually to lose that composure.

Barad knew that he was not the best one to be here, he had never Bonded and he had never given his heart away again. Once had been a pain he could not put into words, and yet he had been a child back then, and truly, it was nothing to the pain the man before him now was feeling. And yet how was he supposed to help Gareth? He could almost see the pain coming off him, and it evoked the usual feeling in him when he saw someone in pain. He wanted to help. He watched as his Brother continued to wrap his herbs slowly, methodically, and he sighed, running a hand over his well maintained beard. Even at his age, he was still vain in his appearance, something that had never changed.

He listened as Gareth spoke of the children, though not really children anymore, and nodded his head, though he knew the other man could not see it. He decided to rub his hands together, and let his tongue roll over his lower lip before a thought came to him. "Gareth, I think we could do with a drink." He paused to see if that caused a reaction in the other man before he leaned on the table next to Gareth, his palms pressed to the edges. "Let us get out of the Tower for a while, and head into Hama Valon. The air will do you good, as will the ale and the brandy."

It was the only play he could think of to try and help the other man, getting him out of his head for a while.

Gareth had always been very dedicated to his work. Of those channelers who had felt a "call" to their given Ajah, his had been a strong one and he was a Yellow through and through. Perhaps it hurt that even he, with all his ability to Heal, could not change the weaving of the Wheel as time rolled inevitably onward...

...but he was still a Yellow. He was a healer. The lives of others were paramount to him, and he cared for them above almost all else. Only his family had ever come first before that.

Now, though... Now.

What good are you doing here now, Gareth? You're distracted. You may well do more harm than good. He sighed at his own thoughts, as he had known it from the start of the day. After all, it was why he was back here instead of out front, but... He sighed again and his shoulders slumped slightly before he nodded. "I think that sounds like a good idea," he rumbled.

The fear of Gareth being distracted and making a mistake on a patient was a distant fear to the Head of their order, but it was still there. And while he was not seeing patients at the moment, he may be called out in an emergency, and that would put him in the thick of it. No one wanted him to have a death on his conscious, not right now, and while Barad did not really know what to say to the man, taking him for a drink seemed like a good way to get him out and maybe alcohol would let him let out some of his feelings. It was something, as an Asha'man they were taught to repress and hide, to be cold and clinical, but sometimes that became a poison that needed to be let out.

Barad caught the slump of his shoulders, but heard his ascent to join him nonetheless. Gareth was not stupid, he knew, and he would know what Barad was trying to do. The fact he was coming along so easily spoke of that. "Good man." He said, and smiled a little, "We could head into Hama Valon, or a I know this lovely tavern in Tarabon where they serve the most exquisite ale, you can taste the summer on the hops, I swear." He told him, offering to take him somewhere where there would be no memories of his departed wife. After all, most Gaiding and their Aes Sedai or Asha'men ended up drinking on Hama Valon at one point or another.

"Choice is yours."
