All Work and No Fun Make Paks a . . .dull girl [Attn: Bella and Nat]

Hama Valon, the city around the Grey Tower.
Forum rules
Welcome to Hama Valon! The aptly named 'mountain guard' is the city that has grown up at the gates of the Grey Tower at the western edge of the Two Rivers. Like all cities, there are quiet quarters with pleasant inns, such as Elman's Creek, which used to be the nearest village when the Tower was young, but was absorbed as the new city grew; its Band of Brothers Inn is still a favorite relaxation spot for many of the Tower's denizens. And again, like all cities the world over, there are less pleasant places--narrow, nameless streets that house hells and other houses of ill repute. Most of the city falls somewhere in between, with hawkers crying their wares in the streets, respectable shopkeepers ready to serve you, and petty cutpurses happy to follow you.

Novices, Soldiers, and drin'far'ji must be accompanied by a chaperon when outside Tower walls or they risk being picked up as runaways and duly punished.

Paks
“What does that even mean?” Paks asked, looking to Nat. She rotated her mug in her hands while bouncing her knee. . .she just couldn’t seem to sit still.

Jesi gave Paks a flat look, ‘Why are you fighting her every step of the way? She wasn’t nearly this stubborn with you when you dragged her out of the Yards. Stop playing the victim, Paks. Stop using that as an excuse and start living. If you can’t do it for you, do it for me. Light, but you are a goat headed fool! The cross image of Jesi disappeared once more.

Paks let go a frustrated sigh and shook her head, “I’m. . .I’m sorry.” She took another long pull of ale, setting her now half empty mug down, “I’m saying sorry a lot.” Running a hand through her short hair, she looked from Nat to the musicians who looked to be setting up to entertain the room.

The Ji’val frowned, “I know this isn’t exactly what you were looking for in a night out in Hama Valon.” She looked into her mug and shrugged, “We can go after this drink, or I can go and let you see if you can salvage your evening.”

Oh, Natlya absolutely knew there was no way at all to salvage this evening. It was completely out the window, but she had somewhat planned for that when she decided to reach out to Paks.

However, she was not a woman of infinite patience. She wanted to be! She really did. She wanted to be the most caring, compassionate creature on the face of this world. Nat wanted to be the one who could handle it all, give the woman exactly what she needed to feel better, and then let her go to live that betterment.

But, alas, she was not this these things.

It wasn't that she didn't understand how Paks felt, she did. But she could only handle the mood and the backlash and the attitude so far, and she had in fact reached that end when her simple statement was met by 'what does that evening mean.' Because Nat hadn't spoken in the bloody Old Tongue.

Grabbing up her mug, Natlya tilted her head back and drank it down all at once. She set it down with a thud. "I'm done. Let's go." With that, she got to her feet and tossed a few coins on the table, walking out without looking back.

Paks
Paks stared at the coins Nat tossed on the table. She’d pushed the Gaidin too far.

‘Now you’ve done it. Is it wise to piss off a Gaidin?’ Jesi chastised Paks. She looked to the retreating form of Nat and back to Paks, ‘I don’t think tonight’s going to end like the night you tried to cheer her up. You screwed the pooch, darlin’.’

Jesi tilted her head, ‘You just gonna sit there? Don’t make her come back here and drag your arse out of here.’

Paks shook her head and pushed herself from her chair. She didn’t even want to go out, but the Gaidin was insistent. Why should she feel bad?

‘Because she gave a damn when she didn’t have to and she’s one of the first in the Yards who DID give a damn. You’re being a pig-headed fool.’

Nat was already out of the inn by the time Paks reached the door. As she entered the cool night air, she looked around for Nat, though the area around the inn was a popular place to gather. She thought she saw the redhead duck off to the right, down a side-alley. Picking up her pace, Paks turned the corner, following who she thought was Nat.

The crowd thinned dramatically, and the woman she thought was Nat was out of her line of sight. “Damn,” Paks let go the curse, and turned to head back to the main thoroughfare.

“Well well, look at what we have here,” a rather weasel like man said as two larger men framed him and two other men moved in on Paks. “One of the Tower rats out for a night on the town? I know you’ve got coin, and that coin should be ours, don’t you think?”

The Ji’val should have been scared, but she was complacent, if anything. Giving the man a flat look as she tilted her head, she replied simply, “No.” She moved to step between the two giants on either side of her, missing the nod from weasel-man to his goons. One of them landed a solid punch to her mid-section, and she doubled over as the wind was knocked from her.

“No? See, you can either give us your money, or. . .well, you’ve gotten a hint of what’s to come,” the weasel-man replied.

Pulling herself up as she held her mid-section, Paks looked to the leader and just managed to reply, “Sod off.” She tried to walk away again, but the other goon next to her pushed her against the wall as the first one socked her in the jaw. She nearly fell to the ground, but the goon who pushed her against the wall kept her on her feet.

Natlya didn't get very far.

She had let her frustration get the better of her in her little storm-out, but not too far from the inn, she stopped herself. Planting her fists on her hips, she took a deep breath and stared at the night sky. "That was poor form, Nat," she told herself, letting that breath out in a gushing exhale to clear her mind.

Paks was dealing with a lot of emotional trauma, to the point of captivity just to prevent her from damaging herself. Natlya hadn't even had to endure that part of things. If she had, it probably would've taken her longer too.

"Bloody..." she muttered, dropping her head as she pivoted on one foot and started her way back to the Band of Brothers.

Nat didn't guess that Paks would have hung around the place after she had left, but it hadn't been too long at all so Paks would likely still be close by and on her way back to the Grey Tower. It wouldn't be too hard to find the other woman and make amends. Not that she intended to apologize, but she would try to make it better somehow...

That was when familiar voices caught her. That is, the woman's voice was personally familiar, but the other was familiar in the tone and nastiness...

"I leave her alone for two minutes..." Nat muttered, before bolting ahead and sprinting in the direction of the sound. It didn't take long to find the alley crammed with five idiots and guess that her friend was at the center. She didn't waste any time diving in, dropping down to jam her boot heel into the back of one big goon's knee...

Paks
Paks glared at the weasel of a man who seemed to be the leader of this not so little pack as the goon who’d made Paks his punching bag landed another punch to her gut as another goon held her up right. Pain flared once more, but she didn’t offer much resistance. She wasn’t going to give these goons the satisfaction of a fight but she wasn’t intending on making it easy either.

‘What are you doing? Where’s the woman who cold-cocked the guy who dared take my honor? Defend yourself!’ Jesi seemed to dance around the men.

A split-second later, chaos broke out as a blur entered from stage-right, and seemed to cripple another of the four goons who ‘protected’ their boss. The man screamed like a little girl and gripped his knee. The one that’d been using her as a punching bag turned to look while the one holding her tightened his grip.

Looking beyond the goon, Paks saw flaming red hair and realized Jesi showed up to save her ass.

‘Now will you give her a break?’ Jesi asked, giving an exacerbated expression. ‘And will you, for the love of the everlasting Light FIGHT! Don’t give up. Fight.

Don’t give up.

Don’t give up. It was something Marten had said during one of his visits. Paks said she’d try.

‘Then TRY!

Paks snarled before slamming her head back into the goon who held her. She heard and felt the cartilage in his nose crunch. He dropped her and let go a curse that was incomprehensible. Once she was on her feet, Paks turned and followed the head butt up with a kick to the man’s groin. Before she could anything else, a large hand grabbed her by the arm and pulled her around. She was a tad too slow to block the upper cut and suddenly found herself on her arse as the metallic taste of blood started to fill her mouth from her newly split lip.

The one with the crunched knee shrieked on the way down, but when he hit the cobblestones, he flopped over and tried to grab at Natlya's leg before she had a chance to bring it back from his extension. He succeeded in doing that much, but that was the limit of his success as she twisted her body and caught his nose with the heel of her other boot.

This time, his shriek was also part gurgle as he let go of her to clutch his face as it spurted blood.

Nat jumped back to her feet at this point, just as a second goon charged her. Lacking all subtlety, he came on straight and fast. In the rush, she thought he might have been twice her size. Spacing her feet, she braced herself and brought her hands up defensively. She watched him coming for her, hands out and open, ready to grab.

Once he got close enough, her hand shot out and grabbed his wrist. Pivoting, she sent him flying forward toward the opposite wall. But another one was already right behind her, putting his filthy arms around her. He had her upper arms pinned to her sides as he leaned back, lifting her feet off the ground.

She spat a curse as she lifted her own legs toward her chest then flung them out and down, sending her weight forward in a way that threw off his balance. She got her feet on the ground and twisted, landing them both on the thug's back. Lifting her elbow, she jammed it back and hard into his midsection until he let go.

Paks
Before Paks could get back to her feet, a foot caught her in her midsection, flipping her to her stomach. She spit out a mouthful of blood before rolling to avoid another kick. The goons were big and intimidating, but not fast. Thankful for that one little bit of good news, Paks managed to scramble to her feet and ducked as another fist aimed at her head.

Paks came up with an uppercut to the goon’s mid-section. The man was so overweight, though, that her fist didn’t seem to connect with anything solid, and the man didn’t even flinch. Nor did he skip a beat as he took another swing at her. Paks didn’t duck, but she did side-step and grab the man’s wrist, and attempted to use his momentum against him. It was a move she practiced in arm-to arm, but she’d never executed in an actual spar.

It always amazed her how easy her instructors could make certain things look, and this particular move was no different. Starting the move wasn’t hard, but actually getting the man to flip? His momentum started to pull him over, but before Paks could let go, the man gripped her wrist and she toppled on top of him. It was very much not where she wanted to be, and scrambled to get off of him. Her scrambling may have landed a strategic kick to a rather delicate area, and the man howled in pain, curling up like a baby.

Paks wasn’t out of the woods, though, because the other goon who’d been using her as a punching bag earlier seemed to be back in the fight, and had his eye on her. The weasel man was making such a racket yelling at all of his men to ‘get them.’ Sparing a glance behind him, Paks saw Nat holding her own against the other goons. Unfortunately, that moment of distraction was all the man needed to grab Paks and slam her into the wall before bringing his knee up into her mid-section.

The body underneath her went still after her third downward elbow, and the arms fell away to the sides. Nat sprung up in an instant, whirling to see that the man was now unconscious. The man she sent flying was also on the ground, bleeding from the head. And the third was still writhing, holding his face.

Paks had one on the ground, but the other was going for her. Nat rushed forward, using one of the big unconscious ones as a spring board as she leaped and somewhat flew through the air. She landed on the man's back, and wrapped her arm around his neck, yanking the joint of her elbow against his jugular.

He flailed and stumbled, slamming her back into the wall. She grunted, then groaned, but pulled tighter.

Scrabbling and yanking at her arms, he tried to dislodge her but she held tight. After a moment, when she wasn't sure how well her arm was going to do for much longer, he staggered once and fell forward. She ripped her arm away just before he fell and pinned it beneath him, then stood and looked.

Since he wasn't moving, she turned to see if anyone was left...

Paks
The goon was about to slam another fist into Paks, the Human Punching bag when arms appeared around his neck. She fell to her knees and spit out a mouthful of blood thanks to one of the goons. Wiping her mouth with the back of her hand, she looked down and wasn’t surprised to see more blood. Adrenaline was doing its thing, and dulled most of what pain she felt, but not all of it.

The comotion not far from her forced her to push her pain to the back of her mind. Paks had watched Gaidin spar in the yards, but she’d never seen them really in action. The man tried his best to dislodge Nat, but she wasn’t going anywhere. It didn’t take long for her to render the man unconscious. Looking around, Paks realized Nat took care of 3 of the four bodyguards.

The weasel of a man stood stock still and looking dumbfounded. When the Ji’val and Gaidin looked to him, he shrieked and bolted, showing his true cowardly colours. Paks pushed herself to her feet and gave a sheepish look to Nat, “Thank you….not sure I deserved your help after how. . .how I’ve been tonight.”

Natlya started to run after him, but she decided that it wasn't the best of ideas at that point. She growled after him and shook herself, blowing out a breath as she turned to see Paks pushing herself to her feet and looking very much the worse for the wear. Seeing the other woman, Nat knew it had been the right choice to not pursue.

She hurried over and moved to give Paks a hand with moving and all. She'd taken some rough shots. When she spoke, Nat rolled her eyes. "You deserved to be left behind in the inn, not to die, for Light's sake," she muttered. "Come on. We need to get back to the Tower."
