The Tide Rolls In [Attn: Bella/Derren]

Taesh Asha'man
It was midday at the Tower, and like any other day there was a hustle and constant hum of noise on the Tower grounds. Of course that did not register too much in the quarters of the Grey. Taesh, one-time Head Clerk of the collective of channelers whose common aim was peace and unity, nodded in greeting at the random learning ranks moving through the halls on some errand or other. His pace was slow, but purposeful, as he soaked in all that the Grey halls had to offer. The Atha'an Miere had only been returned to the Tower for a little over a tenday. He was pleasantly surprised that his items had been kept in his absence, of course his current rooms were a bit smaller than his one time rooms as the Head of the ajah. Still, he was glad to be off of the deck of the Star Song, as much as he loved the sea, he spirit was anchored at the Tower.

Taesh paused as he passed a mirror. It always amazed him how time seemed to almost have no effect on his looks. He shouldn't have been too surprised, his mother's Windfinder had barely aged herself, though his parents were clearly under the whim of aging. Still, that Atha'an Miere, who was quite proud of his looks and the pleasures it had brought him, could see some changes in his appearance. Smile lines beginning to show, a darkening of his skin that probably came from his time out at sea. Taesh grinned, still quite pleased with his exotic looks, before moving on down the hallway toward his destination.

The invitation for a midday meeting had come as no surprise when the Soldier delivered it earlier in the morning, not once Taesh knew the source. What had been a surprise, for the Soldier of course, was that the dark skinned channeler's desire to wear as little clothing as possible when alone, had only been strengthened by his time with his people. The Atha'an Miere suppressed a laugh as he remembered the shade of red the Soldier turned when Taesh answered the door. He wondered exactly what the budding channeler had reported to when he delivered Taesh's acceptance of the invitation.

How could he do anything but accept, when the invitation came from Derren. The very Asha'man who had so much to do with Taesh's own choice to join the Grey. Derren had even been the one to deliver the news that the Grey had chosen to raise a newly Corded Taesh to Head Clerk. That thought gave the Seafolk channeler pause as he stopped in front of Derren's door. He never thought how Derren might have felt about Taesh's decision to fulfill his parents' bargain, and leave both the Tower and his office. Maybe the meeting was not for two friends to catch up, but for a one-time mentor to scold his former pupil.

Taesh took a deep breath, prepared himself to dive into unknown waters, knocked on Derren Asha'man's door, and prepared himself for whatever greeting he was going to receive.

"Enter," Derren called from where he was sat behind his desk.

It didn't take much effort to guess who was on the other side of the door. Of course, there was always a chance that it was someone else, but the office of this particular Grey Asha'man was never really all that busy. He had sent an invitation to his former student, and thus he felt reasonably assured that it was he.

When the door opened and the other man walked in, he saw that he was right.

"Taesh," he said with as close to a warm smile as this man ever came, "It's good to see you." He rose from his chair and walked over to make a proper greeting. "I heard you were back at the Tower and wanted to see you, though I figured you would need at least some time to settle back in."

Taesh's tentative smile turned into his full and genuine one. He was glad of the initial reception, and the warmth of the greeting he received from his fellow Asha'man. At least the meeting had not started with a dressing down.

"It is good to see you too," Taesh responded as his friend and mentor rose to greet him. "I did not know how long I would be out on the sea, but I am very glad that the winds have brought me back here."

The Atha'an Miere channeler made his way further into Derren's living space, looking around slowly before turning back toward the Asha'man whose Cord matched his own. "I am glad for the small respite I have been granted since returning, but in all truth I am anxious to know what has happened since my absence. I apologize for any upset my leaving left the Sitters and ajah. I was given little time myself to make any plans."

Taesh was sincere in his apology, the abruptness of his departure had been a cause for much dissension and aggravation between the former Head Clerk and both his parents and clan.

Derren offered another bare smile, economical in the energy is expelled but no less genuine for that. It was simply who he was. He waved dismissively, and then nodded for them to take seats in the chairs there for guests. "Considering my lineage here within the Grey Tower, I am certainly one who well understands holding to the needs of our families."

Once they were sitting and settled, the elder Grey took a slow breath. "It seems like much has happened since you left, so much so that even I am hard-pressed to remember it all."

Without conscious choice, an image of Paks flashed through Derren's mind and he almost had to physically shake his head just to clear his thoughts so he could focus on the task at hand. Not wanting to show any sign of that internal slip, he continued on with as much pleasantness as he voice usually held.

He told of the festival where the young woman was killed and the Amyrlin was discovered to be a darkfriend, who then escaped. Of the destruction of the White Tower and their determination to help take care of those left behind, and prevent any sort of gap in power to be filled by someone awful. Of various strange occurrences, persons coming and going, the Grey's dealings with the nations...

It seemed to take a long time and when he finally stopped, he smiled wryly. "And that is the shortest version I could think of."

Taesh sat back in his chair, reeling from the information that he had received. It seemed that the Tower and it's inhabitants and weathered storms much greater than anything the Atha'an Miere had experienced in his time with is family and Clan about the Star Song. The channeler had expected there to be some change within the Tower, it was almost an immutable law that any gathering of channelers would bring about changes, but the dark-skinned Grey could not have imagined anything like what Derren had described.

"And here I was thinking I was going to wonder you with my stories of the sea, and you've taken the wind out of all my sails" Taesh said, laughter coating his voice. "I am glad to see that through it all the Tower still stands at least, though I shouldn't be too surprised. I doubt the sea has birthed a storm to could blow this place, or its people, over so easy."

The former Head Clerk looked around the room, a bit of his earlier nervousness creeping back into his face as he broached his next subject. "And out Brothers and Sisters in these halls, how did they take my departure?" That was really Taesh's main concern, how his ajah felt about his leaving, and return. They could not take the Cord from him, but he had no desire to be anathema to the other Greys, especially when he missed those who shared his aim the entire time he was at sea.

Derren considered the question for several long moments in silence. It certainly wasn't that he wanted to heighten his friend's anxiety, but it was something rather broad to answer. The Grey Ajah was several people, and Derren did not know all of them well enough to have even heard their opinion on the matter.

But he made do with what he did know.

"So far as I am aware, there was no great ill will towards you," he said. "People come and go from the Tower for various reasons and for various lengths of time. You let us know of your departure instead of just vanishing, and of any I spoke with on the matter, they were understanding of that."
