Maryn
A colt. That’s what it is, this Soldier is like a colt that just burst into the paddock, thought Maryn with a chuckle as Owen finally slowed his stride down enough that Maryn could catch up. Certain the other man was at least half scarecrow, Maryn cursed his Cairhein height for he could already see it would be a detriment in some ways.

Still as the stream of questions flowed out of Owen’s mouth, with all the control of a creek in the springtime, Maryn decided he liked the chatty Soldier. This one was either the best of actors, or one could be safe to relax their guard a little. Unlike in Cairhein, he doubted anyone would put Owen up to spying,

The Grey Tower itself was amazing, just the building alone and the way the glass caught the light was indescribable. But then you could see the artwork, sculptures and paintings that decorated the hallways they marched through.

“There’s plenty to explore here, certainly. I’ve been here...oh I don’t know how long now, it sort of stops mattering. Anyway, I still find new places sometimes.” Owen narrated as they walked through arches that stretched into vast foyers where hallways met.

“Well it looks like it would take years just to learn all the hallways alone. And how did you come to be here? Did you channel and then arrive, or find out you could learn?” Maryn asked curious as he tried to stop and examine a tapestry that depicted two figures in vast arrays of color.

However Owen still marched on, his hand now clutching the sketchbook when Maryn had mentioned it in passing. Maryn could feel his surprise when he heard Owen mention making a bittern for an Ashaman. Owen obviously regarded the teacher highly, his voice carried pride and joy, emotions Maryn had been trained to listen for at an early age.

“Well your best bet for bittern wood is probably through a merchant of some type. If it’s as hard to get to Hama Valon as a Soldier though, it might be easier to write a letter asking for some,” Maryn spotted a bench and coughing gently sat down on the stone, his breath catching in his throat as he felt the slight pressure before a cough.

“I just need a moment Owen. Thanks,” Maryn said as he titled his head back to help ease the air inside his chest. “I never learned to play a string myself. I was passable at the best despite tutors who tried. But I do have an ear that likes to hear music, and I find the painting and sculpting here amazing.”
Maryn rapped his knuckle against the bench gently, considering Owen’s final questions. “I spent most of my time working accounts, making sure we were paid in full and in turn kept our accounts in order. It was dry and dull, but I did enjoy the chance to study. When I had time of my own, history and this place were often what I had studied, so yes I think I will still continue. After that, Saidin opens so many doors I have only just read about, so who knows what else there is to find or try.”

“What about you Owen? Are you studying to lead men in battle, maybe hoping to build with the One Power and create ter’angreal?” Maryn asked as he tried to get more of a measure on Owen.

Owen
Owen settled next to Maryn, pushing down the surge of anxious unhappiness that he had caused the newcomer discomfort. Maryn’s words about the wood made sense; he would have to consider that route. It could be that he didn’t finish the instrument until he was Dedicated or higher; thankfully, Asha’man lived long lives. It wasn’t like there was a deadline on his quest.

“I am not so good with numbers, but I can organize records and write a fair hand, so I did help a little with estate maintenance,” he said easily in response to Maryn’s story. “And Light, do I love to read...though I confess my tastes used to run more to gleemen’s tales than history. I suppose that’s changed a little since I arrived.” It was actually rather fascinating how many of those tales were simply dramatizations of actual events. Fascinating, and comforting, not that he ever wanted to be in such a tale. But...if the tales could be real, then there would always be wonder in the world.

“As for what I’m doing now, I’m…” he trailed off, remembering Maryn’s earlier questions that he had not had a chance to answer. “I am Shienaran,” he said after a moment. “My father expected me to lead in battle and eventually take over the estate. It’s what any father would expect of his son, but that is not what I am or ever will be.” He looked down at his sketchbook, toying with the dog-eared corners. “An Asha’man told me I could learn to channel, so I took the opportunity to leave that life behind. Now I’m not quite sure what I’m doing, to be completely honest. I don’t know where my skills fit, yet, but...I have years ahead of me to figure it out, I suppose.”

False alarm- there's still a song for me; I'm just about around to sing it
There's still a chance for me...and I'm still here singing.

Maryn
Maryn moved over to allow Owen to sit as he caught his breath. After assuring the other Soldier that he was indeed okay, he sat and enjoyed the sights of the Grey Tower.

Owen was a pleasant escort, discussing everything from music to reading, “I agree with you completely Owen, there is nothing quite like High Chant and a gleeman singing in a hall. Plus the stories were a way for a sick youth to enjoy the world.”

But of all they discussed, it was Owen’s comments about his father that struck home for Maryn. “I know how that feels all too well, although it was my uncle who was my biggest pressure. As his nephew, there were many expectations to fill and hazards to avoid simply by virtue of being close to the stripes. With my health I was a disappointment, though my father’s service kept me insulated. When I found out I could channel, I saw a chance to break free and forge my own life..Now to just keep clear of the web.” Maryn said as he shared his story. He had an unexpected kinship with the Shieranan lad.

“It is nice to see that in your time here the arts and other activities have been available. Thanks again for touring me around, and hopefully we will share some classes,” Maryn said with a smile.
