Beron
Beron was glad when it slowly seemed more apparent that his words had caused no offence, he had been worried his tongue had run away with the cart as his grandfather would have scolded him.

Beron agreed with the Finn when he stated that the average citizens of the Seanchan Empire were little threat, he had learned enough of the Breaking from histories his mother had taught him to know that the leaders and thrones were usually the sources of conflict.

“I too have heard tales of the valour and tenacity with which the Grey Tower fought back. I have seen the Blight, I hope for peace, but I do not think it will be seen,” Beron said as he finished mid thought, the clearing suddenly opening to a wing he had not yet seen before.

“Welcome to your new home, by the way. Ahead is the Warder Hall, where you will meet with Riahana Gaidin and get a bunk assignment. Training yards, archery buttes, and stables are all nearby as well. You won’t leave this area often at first, save perhaps to attend certain classes in the Tower itself,” Finn stated as he presented the newest wonder.

“Thank you Finn, it’s incredible,” Beron was breathless as he took in the size of the Warder Yard. His company had barracked and stabled their mounts in a fraction of the space before him. It made him wonder how much went into the training of a Warder.

“If you could lead me to the Gaidin’s office I’d appreciate it, it’s much larger than I imagined but I do not want to keep you friend,” Beron smiled, eyes a little wide as the size of his fairly impulsive decision was beginning to don on him.

Finn’s lips twitched up in another not-quite-smile as he watched Beron take in the Warder Hall. It had definitely taken some getting used to at first; there were quarters and then there were quarters; even Seandar had nothing that topped the Grey Tower when it came to training facilities.

“I am on escort duty for the next bell or so,” the Seanchan man said cheerfully, “never fear about keeping me, friend. But yes, let’s get you taken care of; as soon as you sign the ledger this day is going to go from leisurely to crazy in the bat of an eye, and the more time you have to get yourself sorted the happier you’ll be.” This, Finn knew from personal experience.

He led the way now, setting a brisk pace that took them up the remainder of the path, through the double doors, and into the main hall. “You’ll find this building is actually shaped like the letter ‘U’,” Finn explained as they walked down the corridor. “On one side is our supply house -armor, weapons, etc- while on the other is classrooms and quarters for the trainees. All the Gaidin have quarters in this portion, though those who have bonded usually live with their bondmates. The buildings themselves surround our primary training yards, though as I mentioned there’s spill over to the north.”

It didn’t take much longer to get to the Mistress of Training’s study, conveniently located for ease of access to both the yards and her charges’ quarters. Finn knocked sharply and waited for a response before saying “Riahana Gaidin, I have a new student for you.”

“She’s ready,” he said after a pause, turning back to Beron. “Can I answer any more questions before you go in?”

Beron
Beron continued to look around, trying to imagine in his mind how many trainees and Gaidin the building could hold, a number he was unsuccessful at attaining.

“Never fear about keeping me, friend. But yes, let’s get you taken care of; as soon as you sign the ledger this day is going to go from leisurely to crazy in the bat of an eye, and the more time you have to get yourself sorted the happier you’ll be.” Finn said kindly, and Beron had to nod his agreement. It had been similar when he had enlisted with the Saldaean army, there had been a few pen strokes and then he was off to march and train.

Finn led the way now, setting a brisk pace that took them up the remainder of the path, through the double doors, and into the main hall.

“That’s a great way to keep us hemmed in and focused, everything you need basically in arms reach. I suppose the channellers must need a lot of room for their training as well,” Beron asked idly as Finn rattled off a litany of rooms and their functions.

“Thank you friend but no. As you mentioned, it will be better to get the journey underway. Sooner begun is sooner finished. Once I am settled I will find you, the first inn is on me,” Beron nervously commented as he walked forward. There was no turning back now, so with a thankful smile to Finn he made his way into the office.

Riahana Gaidin
Riahana Gaidin had her morning rituals that she clung to as they gave her a sense of routine when life at the Tower tended to be anything but, and it was those little things that helped keep her grounded. After sharing a breakfast with Gareth, she’d make her way to the Warder Yards where she would spend an hour and go through her sword forms. In the winter, it was often still dark out as she did this, but these days, twilight gave in to dawn. She finished her sword forms just as the sun peeked over the horizon.

From there, the Gaidin and Mistress of Training headed to her office where she saw to any paperwork that came in the previous evening. She was convinced paperwork had the capacity to breed, and breed like bunnies. She’d settled behind her desk, grateful there was a fire already going in the hearth, and doubly grateful that one of the Ji’val brought her coffee within minutes of her arriving. It wasn’t expected, nor would she ask a Ji to fetch her coffee, but she was very glad for the gesture.

Having just taken a sip as someone knocked on her door, she looked up just as Finn announced she had a new student. She suggested Finn send him in as she set her mug down and turned her attention back to the requisition form for more practice lathes. Just as she finished signing the form, she heard the door open. By the time she’d folded the form and applied her wax seal to the envelope, she heard footsteps stop in front of her desk.

Looking up, the Mistress of Arms gave a small, but warm smile, “Welcome to the Grey Tower. According to Drin Finn, you wish to be a student here at the Grey Tower. I am Riahana Gaidin, the current Mistress of Training, and as such, you will become my responsibility.”

Ria tilted her head slightly, “Tell me about yourself. . .starting with your name, where you hail from, and why you wish to sign the Book of the Warder Yards for the Grey Tower.”

Beron Beron entered the office, schooling his face to seriousness as he quashed rising nerves. This was the desk he had been thinking of as he travelled and it felt a little unreal to actually arrive.

“As you say Mistress. I am Beron Faim, I originally hail from an estate in Saldaea, but most recently I have come from Maradon. I was a scout in the army,” Beron stated as he presented the letter from his captain to the Mistress of Arms.

Once she was done reading, he continued, “ I recently spent an excursion with an Aes Sedai and her Warder. During the time in the mountains, I was impressed by both the Grey Tower agents. I realized then that aiding the Aes Sedai would do more good then scouting the Blight. Especially with all the turmoil in the southern lands.”

“I am here to sign the Book of Warders and offer my blade to the Aes Sedai that needs it,” Beron finished as he assumed a waiting stance, hand on hilt.

Ria set the the letter from Beron’s captain aside as she listened to him talk about his time with the Aes Sedai and her Gaidin. She also gave a bit of a wry smile when he mentioned offering to aid an Aes Sedai. It wasn’t uncommon for those who wished to be a Gaidin to think they’d only assist Aes Sedai. Ria wasn’t quite ready to turn the Roster over for Beron to sign.

Raising both eyebrows, the Mistress of Training tilted her head slightly, “Our Warder Yards does a fine job preparing men and women with a similar drive as yourself to prepare them to aid Aes Sedai and Asha’man. Know you may often be called on to lend your blade to our male channelers as equally as you might be asked to aid our female channelers. Are you willing to aid our Asha’man, or are you solely interested in accompanying our female channelers?”

The Mistress of Training watched Beron’s reaction, curious how he would take the question. Those who thought they would work solely with female channelers alone, or male channelers alone brought biases with them that could risk those they were meant to protect. It didn’t disqualify someone from joining their ranks, but it did mean they’d need to spend more time understanding the dynamics of the Grey Tower. If the man before her was offended, then they would have some work to do on setting his expectations of what the duties of a Gaidin of the Grey Tower actually were.

Beron Beron waited with baited breath, watching as the Mistress of Training laid his letter back down on her desk. “Our Warder Yards does a fine job preparing men and women with a similar drive as yourself to prepare them to aid Aes Sedai and Asha’man. Know you may often be called on to lend your blade to our male channelers as equally as you might be asked to aid our female channelers. Are you willing to aid our Asha’man, or are you solely interested in accompanying our female channelers?”

The question caught Beron unprepared, and he paused for a moment to sit and consider his answer. “I have to confess I feel like a mooncalf Mistress. If I am honest I have given that matter little thought; not because I am unwilling to aid a male channeler, merely because I assumed the Grey Tower Ashaman were similar to the Black Tower. I’ve met a few of those men, and they seemed content to perform their duty and remain aloof from us Saldaeans. If the Ashaman of the Grey s Tower work closer with the Warders, that seems like a recipe for success.”

Beron was still unsure if bonding worked with two men, but he didn’t want to embarrass himself further. He was worried she would think he had imagined the Aes Sedai as being weaker perhaps and so he pressed on, “As a scout I wasn’t often near the forces that man the Citadel or Maradon’s defence so I don’t know them well, but there was a cadre of Green Ajah there. They were well respected and thought of by all the men.”

He paused then, not quite knowing what to say under the watching eyes of the woman in charge of training the martial arm of the Grey Tower.

Riahana Gaidin
The young man didn’t flinch at the idea of working with Asha’man, which was good. He wasn’t in this just to woo an Aes Sedai. “While there are similarities between us and what the White was and what the Black is, there are significant differences. One of those differences is in how Gaidin are treated. We are seen as equals with our channeling counterparts. Some Asha’man work closely with Gaidin, and some don’t. It is the same as some Aes Sedai. You will find some Aes Sedai bond with Asha’man, some bond with Gaidin, and some bond with each other.

“I am bonded to Gareth Asha’man of the Yellow Ajah. He is also my husband, and while there are many who are bonded to their significant others, there are just as many who are bonded to friends as opposed to those they are romantically involved in. You will learn a great deal more about what it means to Bond a Channeler during your time here. I encourage you to work with both male and female channelers as you work towards your Fancloak. Even once you’ve reached the rank of Gaidin, it might be wise to work with full-rank Aes Sedai and Asha-man before bonding to understand what the relationship between Gaidin and Channelers should be,” Ria replied.

The Mistress of Training opened the ledger that was on one corner of her desk, and turned to a page that was half full of names, “This is our current Roster for the Warder Yards. Once you put your name in the book, you will have two full days to get your affairs in order. The Ji’val at the desk outside of my office will show you to the Quartermaster where you will collect your uniform, and then show you to your quarters. As a Drin, you will have a roommate.

“When you begin in two days’ time, you will find your time occupied by chores, exercises and classes. As a Drin, you should not go to Hama Valon unless escorted by someone of mid or full rank,” Ria explained. “My job is to make sure you have everything you need to help you on your journey to earning your Fancloak.

“If you are ready, then please feel free to sign the books,” the Mistress of Training finished.

Beron
Beron was glad when his answer seemed to satisfy the Gaidin in front of him. After anmoments regard, she continued, “While there are similarities between us and what the White was and what the Black is, there are significant differences.”

The White Tower, Light I had forgotten about that. A bastion of Aes Sedai that withstood even Hawking, and now it is gone. Beron thought as he recalled the chaos and confusion the news had thrown Maradon into.

“One of those differences is in how Gaidin are treated. We are seen as equals with our channeling counterparts. Some Asha’man work closely with Gaidin, and some don’t. It is the same as some Aes Sedai. You will find some Aes Sedai bond with Asha’man, some bond with Gaidin, and some bond with each other.

Even once you’ve reached the rank of Gaidin, it might be wise to work with full-rank Aes Sedai and Asha-man before bonding to understand what the relationship between Gaidin and Channelers should be,” Ria replied.

“Thank you Mistress Riahana, I will take that advice. It is good to know that the martial arm is not viewed as less here, as I mentioned before that was my strict impression from the Black Tower Ashaman. I hope to prove worthy of a fan cloak and bond, I just see that the water is much deeper than I had thought,” Beron stated honestly. He realized the future he had signed on to was much vaster than he had imagined, but also held more promise for that very fact.

The Mistress of Training opened the ledger that was on one corner of her desk, and turned to a page that was half full of names, “This is our current Roster for the Warder Yards. Once you put your name in the book, you will have two full days to get your affairs in order. “If you are ready, then please feel free to sign the books,” the Mistress of Training finished.

Beron took the quill from the Mistress of Training, and carefully added his name to the list of men and women who had pledge their swordarms to the Grey Tower. “The man who had escorted me here, he mentioned an Armoury and training weapons. Is there somewhere to stow my personal sword and bow? I am trained in their use but the impression I was given was that learning ranks do not carry their own weapons,” Beron asked as he considered if there was anything else he needed. Fortunately the time he had spent in the army had trained him to need little in the way of extras.

Riahana nodded, “The Quartermaster runs the Armoury. Not only does it hold our practice weaponry and armour, but it also holds the personal weapons and armour of those working to attain their Fancloak. Your sword and bow will be safe there.” She turned the book around and looked over his signature, adding a bit of sand on top to help the ink dry.

The Mistress of Training offered a warm smile and extended her hand, “With that, welcome to the Warder Yards and the Grey Tower.” Once they shook hands, she motioned to the door, “Ji’Val Arshan will show you to the Armory and your quarters as I mentioned. If you need anything, ask one of your instructors or come find me.”
