To Become that Which you Loathe [Attn: Bella/Isla]

Post by Roan » June 30th, 2017, 7:32 pm

Tia Sedai
Mistress of Novices.

Tia still wasn’t sure what to think about the title, and wasn’t exactly sure she wanted the responsibility that came with it. Unfortunately, it wasn’t really her choice. Those more senior to her thought she’d be a good fit, and given recent troubles, not many wanted the mantle. It was like everyone but Tia took a giant step back, and she was left looking as if she’d stepped forward.

Looking around the office, the Aes Sedai furrowed her brows. She was told she ‘should make the office her own.’ She didn’t even know where to start. The desk dominated the room. On the wall to either side were book shelves, and opposite the desk were a couple of chairs. Off to one side was a fire place with a little seating area where she could share tea with whomever might visit.

Of course, the office was not new to Tia. She’d seen it when she’d been a Novice and Accepted, though she hadn’t spent much time within its walls. She tended to just get on with things, and avoided pranks when she’d been in the learning ranks. She knew some of her predecessors had doled out harsh punishments for those who stepped out of line. Did she have it in her to be a harsh disciplinarian?

Not likely, Tia thought to herself.

The desk was intimidating, but the Green Sister made herself sit behind it and pull forward the ledger that was in front of her. She’d been given a quick, ‘This is what your role entails’ overview by the former Mistress of Novices, but Velanya Sedai didn’t seem too keen to spend much time with Tia going through what was what.

Just as well, the Green thought. She wasn’t like most of her Sisters that wandered the halls. Truth be told, in her mind too many of them walked along as if they had a whip up their arses for no other reason than they wore the Shawl. Perhaps being a part of the Sha’hal clan meant she knew the Aes Sedai facade for what it was. . . a facade, and nothing more.

Shifting in the chair, Tia tried to get comfortable, but she suddenly felt very small, and the office very large. Oh what would she do to be back on the walls of the Citadel.

Before Tia’s mind could wander much, there was a knock at the door, “Mistress. . .you have a visitor.” The Accepted who stuck her head in did a quick curtsey and waited for Tia to acknowledge.

The Aes Sedai had been told there might be a new Novice joining the Tower today. It would be the first Novice she’d bring into the Tower as Mistress of Novices. Nodding, Tia replied, “Send her in.” She tried to make herself look comfortable in the chair, but it seemed impossible.

[subtitle]Novice Isla Arkema[/subtitle]
The girl was of just slightly taller than average height, wearing an ill-fitting dress but with the gait of a military woman in her body even if her head was tilted down slightly and she was looking everywhere around her with a skeptical eye. That was something...other about her, but who could tell what it was?

Isla Arkema was escorted to the office of someone called...the Mistress of Novices. The escort said her rank was Accepted, which Isla had no idea as to what that meant. She didn't ask.

Now she stood before an Aes Sedai. Witch. The word flashed through her mind before she could stop it. She had to consciously remind herself that she was here to become one of them, or hope that someone killed her along the way. The woman was rather pretty, actually, some sort of Borderlander.

"I am Isla Arkema," she said, somehow managing to have pride and shame her in her declaration. "I am told I can channel. So I am here."

Tia Sedai
Tia Tomosan Sedai furrowed her brows slightly as she studied the young woman who introduced herself as Isla Arkema. Tia had already been at the Tower for some time before her Memma discovered she had the Spark, thus the transition to Novice Whites wasn’t quite as hard for her as it had been for some of her fellow learning ranks.

Offering the girl a warm smile, Tia motioned for her to have a seat, “Welcome to Hama Valon and the Grey Tower, Isla Arkema. I am Tia Tomosan Sedai, and I am the Mistress of Novices.” The title sounded wrong coming from her lips, but Tia pressed on, “During your time as one of our Learning Ranks, part of my job is to make sure you have what you need to further your education and progress on your path towards the Shawl.

“You will hear some say the Mistress of Novices or Master of Soldiers are nothing more than strict disciplinarians, but my aim is to be as much of a counselor to those in my charge as anything. Now. . . why don’t you tell me about yourself. Where are you from and how did you learn you could channel? What do you know of the Grey Tower?”

Isla took the seat that was offered and listened to what the older woman had to say, no small amount of trepidation making her heart flutter a little inside her chest. This woman did seem...maybe a little nicer than she had expected, but only time would tell. Everything she had believed could still prove true.

About myself? Oh, dear. She warred with herself about simply lying about it for a moment, but she knew she shouldn't. It would come out eventually and if anyone needed to know, it was this woman. Although she did not feel shame for her past, precisely, she could only imagine how it would be received here.

Would she be kicked back out?

"I..." She hesitated and blew out a breath, looking at her disheveled clothes and the traces of dirt on her hands. When she lifted her head again, she held it up. "I was once in the Children of the Light. My father was, and I was his only child of a dead mother. I followed in my father's footsteps, until the day we met a w--" She pressed her lips together. "--an Aes Sedai who was more than we could handle."

She inhaled slowly, warily watching the other woman's face. "A Saldaean, I believe. A redheaded warrior with her. They made quick work of my brethren, and only I and a few other survived. Apparently, I channeled during this encounter. One of the other survivors realized it better than I did and told the company we returned to. I was taken and...interrogated."

Isla tugged at her sleeves. "My father set me free before I was executed and told me to come here."

There. It was all said and laid out in the open, to see if she would be cast aside, perhaps executed by these people instead, or have to go through with this life and learn how to use what was inside her.

Tia Sedai
Tia Sedai was not known for her Aes Sedai facade, though she did manage to school her expression as she listened to Isla tell the tale of how she came to be at the Tower. Knowing what she knew of the Whitecloaks, Tia suspected there was a great deal of inner turmoil within the young woman. With a look of genuine concern Tia tilted her head slightly, “Given your upbringing, I am guessing this is the very last place you want to be, but your father was a wise man if he told you to come here.

“That you channeled on your own means you have the Spark, and if left unchecked, you would have gotten very sick at the very least, or killed yourself,” Tia explained. She furrowed her brows a bit more, “I can’t begin to imagine what is going on in your own mind. I can tell you that you are not the first of the Children to come to us on learning they could channel, and I doubt you will be the last. I realize that might not be so comforting right now, but know I hold no animosity towards you. My job is to get you settled in here and make sure you are on the path to learn how to harness the Spark within you such that you don’t injure yourself or others.”

Tia offered the young woman a small, but warm smile, “I will be honest with you and tell you that your time as a Learning Rank won’t be easy. Many who sign the book and put on Novice Whites find their first couple of years here difficult. For those who’ve been brought here because they had the Spark like you, it’s that much harder because many didn’t choose to come here, but were brought here for their own safety.

“I am here to help guide you, though I’m also the voice of. . .discipline for our learning ranks,” she continued, though she stumbled somewhat on ‘discipline.’ Why in the Light did the Amyrlin think I would be good for this?!

Tia opened the book that was in front of her and turned it before pushing it across the desk. There was already an inkwell and quill on that side of the desk, “Before I have you sign your name into the book, do you have any questions or concerns for me?”

Well, that was more...positive a reception than she had expected. There were other Children of the Light who had come here and were able to channel? There weren't other women in the Children, as far as she knew, so they must have been men... The whole idea made her head spin. It really shouldn't have surprised her, yet it did.

What? You thought you were special? There was a small, snide voice floating in the back of her mind. She wasn't really sure what it was, so she ignored it and idly tugged at her sleeve again.

Oh, she had many concerns...but none that would form into questions. "No, Mistress, I do not," she said softly. Biting her lip, she leaned forward and picked up the quill. As she dipped it in the ink and brought it to the book, she hesitated. She didn't want this... And then she signed. Seeing the name of her father made something hurt deep and low in her heart, but it was her name.

"So..." She swallowed hard, lowering the quill. "What's next?"

Tia Sedai
Tia offered the young woman a warm smile, “Well, next we provide you with your Novice Whites and a few other supplies you might need. You have been assigned to a room that you will share with another Novice that has already been here for a little while.

“You have the next two days to get acquainted with the Tower and Tower grounds, but I am afraid you aren’t allowed to leave the Tower Grounds while you are a Novice. In two days’ time, you will begin your lessons, starting with the basics of the One Power so you can learn to control when you channel,” Tia explained. “Your One Power basics class may be taught by an Accepted or an Aes Sedai, depending on who is available,” she continued.

Pushing herself from the seat, Tia moved around to the same side of the desk as Isla, and sat in the seat next to her, “You will be a Novice for the time being. When you are ready, you will be tested, and if you succeed, you will become an Accepted, or female mid-rank. Once you are an Accepted, you can then travel freely to Hama Valon.

“You will notice young men referred to as Soldiers or Dedicated. A Soldier is the male equivalent to Novice, while Dedicated is the same as an Accepted. You may find some of your courses include Novices, Accepted, Soldiers, and Dedicated. In fact, lessons in things like history, reading, writing and maths may also have Drin and Ji’Val,” Tia paused to let it sink in before finishing, “Drin and Ji’Val are our first and mid-rank students of the Warder Yards. . . non-channelers who are learning how to protect Aes Sedai and Asha’man.”

Crossing one leg over the other, Tia watched Isla as she took in all the information, “I know it all can seem a bit overwhelming at first. If you struggle or have difficulty adjusting, please come find me. Part of my job is to help make this transition as easy as possible.”

Isla listened as intently as she could, although her gaze turned wary when Tia rose and came closer. What was she going to do...

It turned out all that she was going to do was sit closer, though. The younger woman wasn't sure why she had done that, but she certainly wasn't going to ask. Fidgeting with the hem of her sleeve, she listened to all the ranks. While she was still among the Children, she'd had no concept of how...complex their ranking system was here.

How was she ever going to remember this all?

"Yes, Mistress," she said slowly, finding it easier to say that than 'Aes Sedai.' "It is, yes, it is a lot to keep track of. I imagine I will...adapt in time."

Tia Sedai
Tia did not bristle as Isla used the title ‘Mistress,’ though there was a mental shudder with the word. The Green Sister didn’t really care for being called Aes Sedai or Tia Sedai, even though it was what was expected. For her, the titles seemed to put up barriers with those she was trying to communicate with. She knew how important hierarchy could be. . .how could she not with her Gaidin mother and Asha’man father?

“In time, I am sure you will adjust. If you find you are having trouble or are unsure of anything, my door is open. Now then. . .do you have any other questions? If not, the Accepted who showed you in will bring you to the Quartermaster and then show you to your room,” she explained.

Isla took a few moments to truly think things through. Did she have any more questions?

Many!

However...she knew that none of these were things that she wanted to ask the Mistress of Novices, or felt like the woman would actually be able to answer. Isla was not sure there was anyone in existence who could answer these questions, she determined, and so that counsel she would keep for herself.

"No," she finally answered with a shake of her head. "I have no other questions." She took a short, fortifying breath. "Thank you."
