Darthalien stepped back and settled into a ready stance, ready to attack or defend at need. He didn't trust that empty hand, and while he had little experience with -- or against -- shields, he remembered being cautioned that they could be surprisingly hard to get around. He knew better than to assume that the shield was merely a defensive tool, too.

So he extended the weighted wooden spear-tip out and down, stabbing slightly offline and then snapping it across in a sweep at shin-level: low, to avoid having his weapon grabbed, and lower -- he hoped -- than a relatively small shield could comfortably block. The long spear was primarily a stabbing weapon, but the blade still had edges and those edges could still cut.

He didn't expect the attack to connect, but the Gaidin's reaction would guide his next movement.

The logical move would have seen Terric leaping back from the sweep. That logic would play to the strengths of Darthalien’s longer weapon. Instead, the older Gaidin made his own logic. He lunged forward planting his foot letting the shaft smack into his leg instead of the blade.

“I will let your honor decide if that counts as a hit,” Terric said, amusement palpable in his voice before jabbing at the man’s face with his buckler ready to stop short if the kid couldn’t block in time.

Darthalien didn't answer; he was too busy yanking the haft of his spear back up to the vertical so he could block the incoming shield. The Gaidin had stepped in, past the blade and inside the swing where Darthalien lacked the leverage to do any real damage. At this range, if the man had still been holding spears, he would have had Darthalien clean, but that was more something the Pallid was aware of than an actual thought. He hadn't the attention to spare for the other man's words, let alone for translating them. Skirmisher, he thought again.

The "blade" of the practice spear was still down beside the Gaidin's leg; Darthalien changed directions and stepped offline, moving the speartip through a small circle and then twisting the whole spear up and around. He was trying to catch the back of Terric's ankle with a sweep that would yank his legs out from under him and put him on his back.

It was just the way the senior Daggers had taught him, too: a flexible movement. If he felt pressure against the Gaidin's legs that indicated that he'd actually caught at least one of them, he'd complete the sweep, trip the man back, and angle for a butt-strike to the ribs. If he didn't, if Terric got his ankle out of the way, then Darthalien would complete the full circle and bring the blade smashing down from above as he stepped back. This wasn't ideal spear work -- these sorts of techniques were more closely associated with the staff -- but what was a spear except a staff with a dagger on the end of it?

“Ha,” Terric let out a short laugh as his buckler deflected off of the Darthalien’s haft. The mixture of excitement and amusement grew as the man stepped into a sweeping trip. Terric fought the initial instinct to pivot with the man and turn their fight into a grapple, but this was a spear assessment, not a grappling assessment. Instead he lept free like Dog Gaidin that time he and Natlya Cade tried to put snow booties on him. Most newbies fixated on the bladed spear head missing out on the entire catalog of stick fighting techniques at their fingertips.

The spear snagged his boot as he leapt, throwing off his balance slightly as he landed. No time to worry about that, the Drin’s spear was swinging down towards his head. Stepping right, he let the strike clatter off of his buckler. Instead of closing again, he simply danced back and waited to see what the younger man would do next.

Yes, a new plan-- Darthalien turned to keep himself lined up with the Gaidin as the older man dodged back. He didn't hesitate -- his trainers had beaten that reaction out of him. In battle, doing something is always safer than doing nothing. That was the mantra. If his reflexes couldn't keep up with the more experienced warrior's movements, well, that would show the limits of his training, which seemed to be the point here.

A low-line attack hadn't accomplished much; he had gotten around the shield, but the skirmisher was far too mobile to be discomfited by that. Instead, he launched a controlled thrust directly towards the man's eyes, hoping to lure the shield up to where it would block Terric's view for the brief moment that might allow him to slip past it. Flexibility was key, here: however the man blocked, he needed to ride off it and rotate the spear around to target an exposed area before the Gaidin could see what he was doing: gut would be ideal, thigh would be fine, and if the deflection took the spear-tip straight up then reversing into a butt-strike at the foot would do. This would be easier if he wasn't so fast...

But that was the point, of course. The Gaidin's reactions were practiced into reflexes; he would respond to the way the speartip felt glancing off his shield, thoughtless and instantaneous. Darthalien had had a taste of that level of response, and he wanted more of it. That was no small part of what drove him to want to study weapons.

The young man’s predictions were correct. Terric’s buckler flitted up to protect his face, sending the thrust skittering off to the left. Well honed reflexes had the shield arm dropping to clear his vision, just in time to see Darthalien launching into his true attack. A last minute twist turned what would have been a clean skewering into a long score across his abdomen. It was the sort of not immediately lethal but quite painful wounds that hurt and bled enough to slow a warrior down and could still kill you without proper medical attention. Or at least it would have been if it had been a real spear.

“That is a hit,” he said with a hint of pride in his voice. He held his ground just inside of reach of Darthaliens spear, menacing him but not closing to strike with fists and knees.

Darthalien kept his focus on the center of Terric's chest, letting his peripheral vision keep track of arms and legs and shield. It was the torso that would show any movement, particularly at this range. He drew a circle in the air with the speartip to discourage the Gaidin from moving in, and stepped slightly to the the side -- outside foot first, inside foot following.

As he brought his foot down, he raised the butt of the spear behind him as if he were about to make another low strike... but this time he took advantage of the length of the haft and the leverage that gave him, and brought it back down to make the tip rise as he started his thrust. He wanted to come in just above the shield, not because Terric wouldn't be able to block -- he would -- but because if he blocked with the upper edge of the shield then Darthalien could use that same leverage to force the shield down and continue the thrust anyway, with his weight pressing down through both hands and the length of the spear against Terric's single shield arm. It was more solidly-committed move than he'd tried so far, which might come as a small surprise...

Terric bit, he brought his buckler up to smack the strike out of the way. Amusement twinkled in his eye as he felt himself pulled off center. He brought up his free hand, hoping to fend off the man's next strike.

Blood! Darthalien throught, which was much of a curse as in his homeland as it apparently was here. He had the angle he wanted, but of course the more experienced Warder was reaching up to try to grab his weapon. He pressed down and shifted to the side, following Terric's movements to keep himself positioned so his point would remain lined up, then pushed in for the thrust. He made it a momentary attack, what his earlier trainers had called pointing rather than a full thrust. It would either connect or it wouldn't, and there was no point in pressing further and setting himself up to be disarmed. Then he yanked the weapon down and back as he raised his lead leg and pushed.

It wasn't a kick, exactly; he wasn't going to injure Terric with his foot. It was more a matter of pushing himself back off the man's shield, and hopefully extracting the wooden practice spear in the process. Landing would require passing his front leg back, and (if he had control of his weapon) reversing his stance so that the butt was forward.

OOC: This could go very differently depending on whether or not Terric gets a solid grip on the spear; if Dar doesn't land the blow and can't get the spear free of Terric's grip, then he probably ends up with his left side forward, and the length of the spear stretched between his left hand and Terric's right. Awkward... Though it would just mean that attacking with more force and less sensitivity doesn't work well against Aiel, or what Dar thinks of as Skirmishers, which is completely fair.
